Mundane Magic: A Lazy Witch's Guide to Hacking Your Brain, Building a Daily Practice, and Getting Stuff Done

Rate this book
Transform the mundane tasks of daily life into intentional moments of magical self-care, with spells, rituals, and exercises that work with your brain, not against it—from the co-host of the Demystify Magic podcast

Are the dust bunnies and clutter in your house getting out of control? Do you put off cleaning your shower curtain or organizing your closet until you can’t ignore the mess anymore? Imagine turning these mundane chores into moments of magic, where sweeping the floor or folding laundry becomes an act of spiritual connection and enchantment. But how do we bridge the gap between the ordinary and the extraordinary? That’s where Mundane Magic comes in, to help you focus on the intention behind your actions and tap into everyday magic with simple rituals and mindful moments, like whipping together a coffee spell for abundance or clearing out the stagnant energy under your bed.

Initially a skeptic herself, Molly Donlan’s journey took an unexpected turn when chronic hip pain led her to Reiki and the intersection of science and spirituality. She’s been where you are, overwhelmed by the weight of daily stress and household chores, but by injecting boring tasks with a sense of novelty and fun, she found magic practices that worked for her and her ADHD brain, rather than against it.

Organized by rooms around the house and divided by the level of difficulty, Mundane Magic shares fun and actionable tips, exercises, spells, and rituals to create micro-moments of magic and motivation. You can organize your chores around the moon cycles to optimize cleansing and creativity, whip up an easy simmer pot for the motivation to tackle that pile of dirty dishes, or turn a minty shampoo into a spell for mental clarity.

Mundane Magic offers a fun approach and empathetic support for productivity around the house and reclaiming joy and creativity in the process.

To the skeptics, yes, this is actually worth reading! Whether you believe in all of the witchy, magical stuff or not, this book is incredibly useful because it is based on real psychology! I love the author, Molly, because she has the perfect blend of spirituality and science, and explains it in an easy-to-understand way. Personally, I’m new to my spiritual journey and I’m still somewhat skeptical about some things. You don’t have to subscribe to ALL of the beliefs for this book to help! Go in open-minded and see where you end up.

I love how this book is that it teaches you how magic works & how your brain works, so that you can take advantage of your own psychology (in a good way)! It makes tasks that seem overwhelming feel manageable, even when you’re burnt out. I can’t wait to see how the little things in my life change as I implement ideas from this book.

Truly, there is no better piece of media than this book when it comes to self-care and healthy productivity. It makes self care and house chores fun, or at least, less of a chore. It brings a whimsy into the mundane, which is so important especially now.

Neurodivergent or not, witchy or skeptic, anyone will get something from reading this book.

A lot of fun and realistic ideas for incorporating your craft into the small moments, which is a cornerstone of my own practice and exactly what I was looking for when I picked this up.

My biggest gripe was that it seemed Donlan felt the need to prove or explain scientifically why witchcraft works. While a STEM girlie myself and I appreciate the research, the point of any spiritual pursuit far surpasses scientific evidence, and doesn’t need to be explained with it in order to be valid.

Will likely be using as a reference book on a regular basis regardless!

Mundane Magic is exactly what I needed!! I struggle with being really, REALLY hard on myself when my home isn't sparklingly clean... and, it never is (hint: I'm pretty hard on myself regularly). Not only is Molly excessively relatable, down to earth, and silly throughout the book - she is validating and realistic. I may not be able to do everything in a day, but the book is so full of reminders of all the things I can do (and get to do)! Plus, turning mundane, everyday tasks into building my daily witchy practice? Dooooopamiiiiiine, IYKYK. Just like she teaches in her Reiki classes - 2 minutes a day is better than 60 minutes once a month... totally ready to make a Motivation Simmer pot and lock in! This book is *Chef's Kiss*

Just received my copy today and I am unbelievably excited. As a long time supporter and follower of Molly, I can confidently say this book is going to be helpful for ANYONE who struggles to keep up with life and home tasks for any reason. As a neurodivergent individual who really finds motivation through spirituality, this is so perfect for me. Making otherwise mundane tasks more fun is critical for someone like me and I can’t want to give this to friends and family who can benefit too!! The resources available in this book are so valuable and it’s clear so much time, intention and care went into the creation of this in every aspect. -Cassidy

As someone with adhd who was raised by a neurotypical mother I always felt like something was wrong with me for lacking motivation to tidy up.
It just didn't click for me the way it did for my mom and I didn't see clutter the same way as she did.
This also meant I never learned to clean in a way that was sustainable for me. Following Molly's mundane Magic series has been a game changer for me and now this book has filled me with more whimsy, inspiration, and motivation

So. Good. If you're thinking about reading this enough to read the reviews, stop reading the reviews and go read the book. Molly's writing style is like her podcasting: somehow both soothingly laid back and also brightly fun, information-packed, and action-inspiring.

I read the entire book from cover to cover so I could give it the review it deserves. Molly covers every aspect of home/pet/self care, from trimming a pet's nails to returning library books to washing the shower curtain, and walks readers through a variety of ways to integrate a spiritual practice that literally turns chores into magic. It's perfect for anyone who's a little bit witchy and a little bit ADHD (read, a LOT of both), but it's also perfect for the skeptic who's having trouble with home care tasks. Molly writes about magical rituals, meditations, and spells, but also the fascinating science behind why it works. Bonus: she also recorded some of the meditations, so you can listen to them while you do the thing!

She also doesn't gate-keep the best information. She puts her three maxims right in the beginning where they're easy to find: "Two minutes a day is more effective than 60 once a month. How you do anything is how you do everything. You are the Magic." All the meditations have purple borders so the edges of their pages are purple, which makes them easy to find even when the book is closed (even the formatting is perfection!). I really appreciated that Molly doesn't pretend to be the best expert with the most perfect methods. She encourages readers to use what works for them and leave what doesn't, so when I found something that would fail HARD for me (shifting stuff to the threshold while decluttering = a pile of stuff to deal with "later"), I could just skip that bit without worrying about not "doing it right." The thing is, this kind of does make her the best expert with the most perfect methods. :)

With zero exaggeration, Molly and her podcasting partner Madison's podcast Demystifying Magic changed my life, and this book contains a lot of the things that I found so life changing. For example:
- The ease I introduced into my magical practice has translated to more ease and patience in my parenting.
- I stopped worrying about others' perception/judgement of my spirituality, and it changed some of my relationships for the better: I booked a chart reading with my cousin, I talked about magic with my best friend and pulled some tarot cards for her, I read this book IN PUBLIC and it sparked a couple of interesting interactions with coworkers.
- I've been more present in general, and have found myself reaching for my phone less and less. You can't do magic while scrolling; you have to be present and intentional.
- I've done magic without talking myself out of believing in it (hello, little spider plant I just manifested!).

At the beginning of the book, Molly writes "Mundane Magic emphasizes rest, wonder, and--most importantly--doing what works for you," and this could not have been more true. Somehow, adding low-maintenance magic into my everyday has created more time and space for rest. I know I'll be reaching for this book over and over again.

Mundane Magic is like having a spiritual bestie cheering you on as you start to tackle the tasks you've been putting off, one deep breath at a time. This book really focuses on you and how by making each small task a ritual you can give your brain dopamine and create more fun for yourself through that sense of novelty. Intention is so important in this handy guide to cleaning and decluttering your space. By setting intention you tell your space what you are calling in - it could be motivation, it could be self-love or it could be something completely different. I have tried this over the last week or so and really felt the energy shift and clear in a way it hasn't before. A favourite ritual I have tried from Molly's book is a simmer pot for banishing sickness, which smelled just like a hot cross bun and was something I could easily make with my 4 year old daughter and so far so good!
I really love Molly's genius idea of scheduling certain tasks that need to be done monthly with the new and full moon and others seasonally with the solstices and how she explains this in an accessible way.
Mundane Magic has inspired me so far to clean my living room from top to bottom, get through a significant chunk of laundry I had been putting off, cleanse and realign my daughter's room and completely declutter that pesky overstuffed cupboard - and I've only had the book a week. I'm feeling very proud of myself and my mood has been lifted as a result of the inspiration this book has given me. I'm feeling more connected with my spirit guides but also to myself. By making my environment more "me" I feel much more balanced and grounded already.
The illustrations in Mundane Magic are so cute and beautiful throughout. I especially love the witchcraft and tarot symbolism on the front cover, the super sweet dust bunnies and the Churros in the little treat magic section. This is an author who is not afraid to let her gorgeous personality shines through every word. Molly is funny, engaging and really just like a best friend cheering you on from the sidelines. Working with this book has been a nourishing, compassionate self love spell in and of itself. The fact my house is looking so much cleaner and feeling energetically clearer is just a bonus, this book is so very much more than that and it's something that I will use and treasure for years to come.

I do not often post reviews about books I read. Usually, because I assume everything I have to say has already been said better by someone else… or because I leave the tab open for three days, deal with a million other things, and eventually give up. Today, I am, because in a way, this book is exactly about that: doing the small things you want to do instead of letting procrastination, anxiety, or just life get in the way.

What makes this book different is that it is not a self-development book. Instead, it is a collection of resources for you to make everyday tasks more magical, which somehow works better than self-help books. It works because there is no pressure to “improve yourself.” You simply start shifting the way you experience ordinary tasks.

As Molly writes, "Magic doesn’t have to be some hokey spell with a rhyming incantation; it can be simply noticing how delicious your coffee tastes in the morning. Magic can be intentionally choosing your outfit based on what energy you want to embody for the day. Magic can be a tool to make mopping a little more enjoyable."

The tone is humorous, so it feels like having tea with a good friend, and the science (because of course there is science in that magic book) is explained in a very accessible way.

So, yes, I bought the book and the audiobook. Not just because I needed motivation to mop my floor, but because sometimes you need to hear a reminder that the magic you are looking for is already in the small things you do every day.

Because in the end, the real message of this book is simple: you are the magic✨

I absolutely love this book. I was introduced to Molly through an interview with the witches on the Back on the Broomstick podcast and was immediately drawn to her energy and perspective. As a former skeptic with a master’s degree in a scientific field, I especially appreciate that she explores the science behind why certain practices work. That combination of curiosity, practicality, and magic really resonated with me.

After hearing the interview, I immediately preordered the book—and it has completely lived up to my expectations. It’s full of wit, warmth, and whimsy (the purple print alone brings me so much joy!), and the tasks, rituals, and spells feel approachable and achievable rather than intimidating.

I’ve bought quite a few books on witchcraft, paganism, herbalism, and related topics lately—probably more than I should admit—but this is the first one my brain has happily stuck with beyond the first couple of chapters. I’m halfway through and already know I’ll be finishing it soon.

This book is engaging, well organized, and genuinely inspiring. It’s the kind of resource I can see myself returning to again and again. Highly recommend!

I'm so happy to have my copy of Mundane Magic. As a listener of the Demystify Magic Podcast that Molly co-hosts I knew I would love her new book. Not only is it a helpful guide to aid my squiggly brain at making everyday tasks more bearable, it also helps me to connect to myself and the magic within me. I also appreciate her connection between science and magic, bridging the gap for any skeptic.

I love the layout of the book; each section focussing on a part of the house. The appendix is also fabulous; providing substitutions for spells and a plethora of simmer pot recipes (I'm extra excited for those). Mundane Magic is a wonderful resource for anyone that wants to bring a little magic into their life in small actionable steps. Molly makes the daunting seem doable and I can't wait to continue to explore myself with her help.

Thanks for bringing your knowledge and whimsy to the world Molly!

Familiar Approved! 🐱😻🐾

I’ve been waiting almost a year for Mundane Magic, and I’m so excited it’s finally here. I have both the hardcover and the audiobook and honestly, I can’t choose a favorite.

Molly’s narration is warm and engaging (just like her podcast), but the physical copy is filled with beautiful illustrations that make it feel extra special. You really do need both.

What I love most is how this book transforms everyday adult tasks into meaningful rituals. It gently reminds us that just because we’re “adulting” doesn’t mean playfulness and whimsy can’t be part of our spiritual well-being. It brings back that childlike ability to make even ordinary moments feel intentional and calming.

And the ultimate review? My familiar, Rizzo, clearly approves! She may have even taken a tiny bite out of the pages as her seal of approval

This book is gorgeous, first of all, but it has also been so helpful when feeling like the tasks in my life feel like a tiger is chasing me. The advice is not only science backed but it is so much more than a typical witchy guide or self help book that is so common nowadays. Molly makes a point to make readers feel like they aren’t alone in taking on life and that it is perfectly fine to make your magic your own and that magic is not a one size fits all situation. Thanks to this book there is no longer a basket full of socks to be paired or three other baskets of laundry to be done and put away. I’ve also been able to actually relax in a healthy way thanks to this book. Thank you to Molly for putting together such a wonderful read.

Great addition to my collection!! I’ve been listening to Molly’s podcast for years and taken her Reiki 1 course. I just love her energy and take on all things magical. She brings such a fresh perspective and creative take on things and this book really encapsulates that.

As I get older and have more responsibilities, the idea of mundane magic doesn’t just become more appealing to me but it really lays the ground work for my practice. Having this book as a reference guide has become a game changer to turn the not so fun into whimsical intentional practices.

10/10 recommend. Thank you, Molly!

Warning: This Book May Set Your Chores on Fire (In the Best Possible Way)

Have you ever wished you could wave a wand and—poof—your chores were done, your day flowed smoothly, and life felt just a little more enchanted? Mundane Magic won’t do the dishes for you, but it gets wonderfully close.

This book shows you how to bring that sense of wonder, intention, and everyday enchantment into the most ordinary moments. It’s a gentle nudge toward seeing your life as a place where magic already lives—waiting for you to notice it.

If you’re ready to bring that magic to life in your own beautifully mundane world, I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

This book is so up my alley that I ordered the hard copy and audio version. I love having the actual book to flip thru for reference but the I love hearing Molly actually speaking to me even more. As someone who has ADHD I’ve never been SO motivated to clean and I’ve ACTUALLY started!! I love her style of weaving humor, practicality, and magic together. She gives permission to use her book as a starting point and let your own intuition guide you from there. My personal favorite way to use the book is to make a simmer pot based on my intention. This is the perfect book for anyone looking to add more magic to your life ✨

I am LOVING this book! I appreciate how positive Molly approaches each task. She offers support from kindness and humor. Everyone who’s seen me reading the book has immediately asked to skim through, only to get sucked into reading full sections where I have to ask for it back! Super motivating, and it works!!! I’ve been much more consistent with keeping my space in tidy and clean than ever before, and I’m only halfway through! Great for you, great for a friend, could not recommend more! Also the meditations sprinkled in the book are game changers. LOVE IT! The dust bunnies are adorable as well.

It's where science meets magic AND gives you permission to do it in the way that resonates with your heart, your values and your needs. This book is broken up room by room and feels like a best friend guiding you to bring some happiness and fun into the process of cleaning each part of your home. The author brings in tips for what has helped her as a neurodivergent individual. And yes, some magic. She has crystal and herb recommendations. The book is filled with comments from people within her community who have tried her tips and found success. I’m looking forward to implementing some into my life and I’ve already started washing my shower curtain with the full moon!

Are you an ADD witch that wants a more magical life but doesn’t have hours to dedicate to rituals, then this book is for you. It feels like having a conversation with your bestie! And if you’ve never really studied magic this is a great place to start. The way Molly breaks things down and explains things makes it so easy to comprehend. Not a reader? No worries this is not a book you need to read start to finish. The first 50 pages explain how it all works then just pick and choose what calls to you as you need it. Can’t recommend this book enough. I’ve even gifted 3 copies.

I LOVE this book & look forward to buying copies for friends! Molly has an easy & actual doable way of making the most mundane tasks magical! I HATE housework, however now that I can incorporate it into my magical practice, I’m starting to, dare I say, like it! 😱 My favorite magical chores as of late are laundry (especially folding & putting it away) & cleaning my floors. The simmer pots are another favorite I can’t seem to get enough of! Molly, thank you for writing this book & sharing your talent with us. Sending much love & light to you!

This is probably the prettiest book I own. I've been looking for a witchy book I can use as a reference rather than one I have to read linearly and it's so easy to do just that with this book. The layout is not over-stimulating, making it so easy to peruse for what I need to read.

And the lunar chore charts in the back!! Come ONNNN. Molly delivered the whole package. But honestly are we surprised?!

Okay I am still walking around the house with this book solely for the appendix 😍 this book is literally the lazy witches’ guide to a practical everyday practice. If you are someone who struggles with feeling like you need to do it “right” this is the book for you. Two minutes a day is better than 60 minutes once a month. I ate this up ! And like I said the appendix of this book is a witches’ dream !

This book is a must have for all witches, especially if you have a squirrelly brain! The book is PACKED FULL of simple ways to make cleaning and organizing fun and something you actually want to do! It’s also a great reminder of how easy it can be to bring magic into our everyday lives. The appendix is full of magical info, that alone is a book full of knowledge! The audiobook is great but you should definitely get a physical copy, too because you’ll be going back to it over and over again!

This book is amazing! It is easy to read and packed full of wisdom! As soon as I started reading it, I was called to declutter an entire room in my house! I also understood why I have always had the urge to declutter and reorganize one spaces, even as a young kid! This book is a resource and turns the mundane chores in life into magical experiences. It is a must read with an appendix that is even more amazing!

I really wanted to love this book. I do LOVE the concept, and there are some generally helpful ideas. The author's reliance on psychology to explain magic seems limiting from a witchy standpoint. Most of the spells and charms are actually just meditations or positive affirmations with a splash of moon water. This book would be great for someone who is looking for self help rooted in psychology with a dash of whimsy.
