A book that makes connection feel possible again. I’ve followed along the Big Talk journey for a while and love everything about it. Will probably come as no surprise, I also loved the book.
Big Talk is simple and powerful. It reminds you how isolated life can feel, even when you are surrounded by people. Kalina shows how skipping small talk opens the door to real connection. The stories are honest and easy to relate to. They make you want to ask better questions and listen longer. I finished this book feeling more open, more curious, and more human. Book arrived this morning and I flew through it. It felt like sitting down with a friend and having an honest conversation. Nothing but love for this book.
So helpful in this day and age of less and less human connection, to have this resource to help make deeper connections. I found the advice so practical and helpful - for example, going for a walk and actually making eye contact and smiling at people, and leaving my headphones behind has already led to so many fun, meaningful conversations. And who knows where a connection can lead you in life, could introduce you to your next job, partner, or passion!
Big Talk is not just a book, but the distillation of wisdom gained by the author through a dozen years of experience and experimentation with cross-cultural communication spanning the world — from a prestigious Fulbright fellowship spent in east Asia to interviews and workshops conducted in Europe, Kazakhstan, Central America, Australia, South pacific islands, and across all parts of the U.S. — honing in on what is universally human, and yet what is unique about what each individual has to say, once you understand how to elicit from them what they have to share.
I’m so proud to see this book out in the world. The idea behind it, encouraging deeper, more meaningful conversations, is something we need more of right now. Kalina has been passionate about this mission for years, and it’s inspiring to see it come together in a book. If you’re someone who wants more connection and less small talk in your life, this is definitely worth checking out.

After attending Kalina’s big talk events in Los Angeles, I was really excited to hear that she was working on a book. I’ve just received it and already gotten started! I appreciate how she weaves in so many everyday examples of her life into the book that are easy to relate to and applicable for my own life. As a new mom- I’m meeting a lot of new people in the same life stage and I’m already thinking of ways I can incorporate it interacting with them and maybe even planning my own big talk events with new parents. Looking forward to finishing the read!
