The Keeper

Rate this book
An ancient box is found, and its mysterious occupants released. They seem benign, the small, floating creatures freed from the box . . . until they begin multiplying. Until Guy, Saul, Emily, and her ten-year old twins find themselves sucked into a whirlpool of terror. For the pretty little floaters have bonded them, and are taking something from them . . . and giving back something even more dangerous.

What they give back is new to the world. It is something three desperate mercenaries want, and will kill to get. Unable to negotiate with their murderous hunters, Guy, Saul, Emily, and the girls find themselves fleeing for their lives.

Yet, unknown to all, a deeper threat is growing: Without a Keeper, the creatures are making their move . . .

I loved this book very much. This book had me on the wanting more from the very beginning. The cover is what caught my eye but the story inside kept me coming back for more. I think you should try this book yourself and see what you think. * Thank you too Netgalley and Curiosity Quills Press for giving me this book in exchange for an honest review*

This book was definitely different for me. It isn’t my usual read but it spiked my interest so decided to give it a shot. At first I wasn’t sure of how all the characters played their part. Who was the main character and how they all fit into the puzzle so at first I was a bit confused. However, I told myself just keep going don’t give up the minute you don’t fully understand let’s give the book a chance to tell you. Good news it does tell you and after awhile you come to understand how they are all connected. Yay! I have to say I like all the characters minus Gary. I mean really? I absolutely HATE Gary!! He acknowledges the fact that he treats his wife Beth bad and yet he states that it is her fault he does it.? He says she is a possession and I don’t care if it is a fictional book or not or whether some men are like that in real life because let’s face it there are but why would you want to write about a character who is just like that? Women are NOT possessions! How can you write a character who gets excited over being jealous? I really don’t like Gary and very seriously thought about dnfing this book just because of him. Later on in the story he kills Beth. What does he say? That she’d provoked her own death. It was her actions that caused his reactions. SAY WHAT? NOONE PROVOKES THEIR OWN DEATH!! NO WAY SHOULD MURDER BE CLASSIFIED AS A REACTION!! I know this is a book but come on. There could have been a better way to write that character. Right? I mean seriously.? Again this book I about of my norm. for me and I reminded myself that this book is a supernatural thriller. The main part being thriller, meaning that there will need to be a bad character, or villain and in this case it was a good for nothing little prick. So I decided to try to continue. I don’t necessarily like Crystal either but again she is also a Villain. My favorite characters are the twins. I especially love not only their bond but what their “floaters” help them accomplish or rather what they enhance. I understand that the “floaters” have some special abilities or something and some are cool while others are confusing. I am half way through the book now. I tried to have it all the way read before this post was to go up but unfortunately it didn’t happen. This books pace is slow and it was hard to pick up at times. At the half way point I still know nothing about the “floaters” except like I said before it appears to enhance what they are feeling, maybe in a way but it also I am not sure how to put it….. they also are capable of other things that aren’t suppose to be actually be able to happen. Now at the half way point I am disappointed at the lack of knowledge I have about these “floaters” especially since this book is somehow suppose to be the “floaters” trying to take over the world or something to that effect since their is no proper keeper. But seriously, fifty percent into the book and for that far I really don’t know a whole bunch. To be honest as it stands right now I am going to rate this book 3 Stars. It’s ok but it isn’t great and with only the last half of the book left I don’t know that there will be enough time for this book to make those 3 Stars any higher. Not without the end of the book feeling rushed and I don’t like that feeling either. Unfortunately I just don’t think this one was for me but hey you never know until you try!

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I did feel that this book was quite an intriguing one. I was a bit confused with how all the characters fit together at first, but as the book went on, I did find the connections easier to understand.

I was a bit confused, at first, as to how Guy, Saul and Gary knew about the box in the first place. Although I didn’t feel the question was fully answered, I did learn a lot about what was going on by the end of the book.

I found it fairly easy to picture the orbs (not the correct term, but I can’t recall the exact spelling of their name) in my head. Of course, they were described as jellyfish… which made for an interesting mental image.

It was good to see the relationships between the characters, though it was disappointing to see that a couple of them didn’t really have redeeming qualities and I was disappointed that they came across as completely villainous – I always find that the best ‘bad guys’ are the ones you can see the potential for good inside.

I did like reading about the relationship and closeness between Annie and Abby. I felt the author captured that ‘in-between’ stage really well – where they’re not quite children; but not quite teenagers, either. It was good to see some of the book from their perspective and I found there to be some quite intense, on-the-edge-of-my-seat moments with them.

I liked Saul as a character, but I did find it a bit difficult to picture him in my mind. It was a little bit like that with all of them, to be honest – I couldn’t get much of a grasp on the personal appearance of many of the characters. I liked the relationship Saul had with the animals who ‘adopted’ him and I especially liked Einstein.

I didn’t much like Emily through a lot of the book, even though there was an explanation for her behaviour eventually. I liked her a bit more towards the end of the book. I didn’t like Crystal at all… but Mitch did kind of grow on me a little by the end.

I did like the different kind of abilities, but even by the end of the book, I was left with some unanswered questions. I think it would be interesting to read a sequel to this book… or a prequel, exploring the origins of the box and the orbs a bit more.

The Keeper is a fascinating book, certainly unique in concept. It will pull the reader back to continue the journey as the character's basic personality is twisted, changed. Through the entire book, you will want to know what the creatures want, what they're trying to accomplish, if the changes they make with the humans they've bonded to are on purpose. Those changes vary wildly, from useful super powers to nuances in sensory perceptions.

The author goes into great detail showing the world through each character and the imperatives upon their actions caused by the creatures desires. It's an interesting read, nothing like I've ever read before.

I especially enjoyed the relationship of the twins and how their bond allowed them to embrace the "gifts" of the creatures.

While the reader in me enjoyed the unique story, my editor side would have made some changes. In many places, often right as action started, the characters fell into their memories with a bit too much detail. I think the length of the book could easily be cut by 20%, but for those that appreciate more description than I do, you'll love this book even more. I'm also not a fan of omniscient writing, it lends to frequent head-hopping, often within a paragraph, and more telling than showing. But that's one of those things I notice as a writer and editor. My reader side would have read blissfully on a decade ago!

I do recommend the book for its uniqueness and fascinating concept. In fact, it even spawned a story idea for me, which I just might start outlining in the near future!

I received an ARC for my honest review. I give it 3.5 stars.

Well written with an attention grabbing start that keeps the reader hooked and turning pages. I like the world building and the descriptions about what the characters are seeing. The characters feel well fleshed out and have good development. The plot is intriguing and has a good flow from start to finish. Overall this is an entertaining fun read that is difficult to put down once you start reading. I received an e-ARC through Curiosity Quills Press in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my opinion.

I got this book from Netgally as an advanced read:
I really liked this book. The story was well written and drew me in right from the start. I was highly interested in the characters of the story and was rooting for the good guys! I had a difficult time putting the book down and read late into the night to find out what was going to happen. It is a very intriguing idea and translates well into the story, a very intense thriller! Great Book, read it today!

Received a complimentary copy to read and review. Very interesting book. I couldn't put it down. The characters and the world that have been created are great. It has some great twists and turns. Readers will be pulled into the story from the very first page. It's one to add to your TBR list. I look forward to reading more of Dalia's books.

Hard to put down! The question is what are these creatures and what do they want? Why do they need a Keeper? This book will keep you engrossed from start to finish. Recommended.

I received this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

To me, this was a bit plodding, and I feel that the payoff wasn't worth it. I didn't really connect to the characters and there were many questions left unanswered. It was unique, but not for me.
