Marullus is one of the great Latin poets of the Renaissance. Too proud to enter a menial trade, he enjoyed a long career as a soldier, so his biography is to a large extent the story of the Italian Wars at the end of the 15th century. The book is therefore a nice twofer, the recounting of incredible ingenuity, stupidity and fortune of Italian and foreign armies, and sweet poetry and philosophy that grows in the hearts of one idealist that participates in them.
