Tibet, 1935: English explorer Travers is determined to track down the mythical Abominable Snowmen which are said to roam the Himalayas. When the Doctor and his companions visit the nearby Detsen monastery they discover that the Yeti are all too prominent.
Yeti are the Whistling monsters with big balls .Giant Teddy' bears with teeth & claws this perfect for hot night as it's set in ice cold Tibet . This noisy complex story with the Great Intelligence first story which later in Jon Pertwee's period bring the Autons about. This A Jamie & Victoria story that has lots of twist & lot less running down corridors so it great & is well worth nights entermant if don't like 2018 Football like me
A classic that introduced the Yeti and The Great Intelligence to the Doctor Who mythos. It is a suspenseful story that takes place of the remote location of Detsen monastery in the Himalayas to create an atmosphere of mystery and menace as the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria try to solve the reason why the Yeti are attacking the monks of Detsen. The Great Intelligence is a disembodied entity from another plane of existence trying to gain a foothold in our reality and using its mental powers and the brute force of the yeti to obtain its goal. It's up to the Doctor and his companions to help the monks defend against this threat.
This is an interestingly different story, given a historical setting without any historical characters. Why exactly an invading intelligence would choose an isolated monastery in Tibet escapes me. Nevertheless, this story has "something" that compels one to listen. Somehow, one becomes concerned for the little monastery and its inhabitants valiantly struggling to figure out just what is going on.
if you have auditory processing issues, this is not the audiobook for you (or me lol). It’s basically 6 episodes of old who with a narration every now and again, but the audio quality is poor. Sometimes the background sounds are too loud, especially if something is beeping, and it can becomes painful to listen to. Scenes with the Great Intelligence are harder to hear for some reason. The story was good, but maybe just watch the episodes if you can find them lol.
Another excellent story. The nearly 50 years since this episode was broadcast, it still stirs the blood for adventure, and tingles the mind for story-telling. I had only heard of the Yeti adventures before this episode. It is certainly not something I would have guessed. Even a smidge of mysticism that I know sneaks into the Hammer Horror style episodes from Tom Baker's tenure, such as the Sisterhood of the Flame. The attribution of mysterious powers to the lama adds a mystique I appreciate from those jaunting Victorian adventures fumbling through a barely understood culture, much less, religion, and letting the imagination run wild within it with tales of amazing feats of the mind.
Nor did I know that the Yeti were a recurring character. I cannot wait to revisit them. I also appreciated that the writer added in a 'prayer of protection' with the jewel in the lotus 'om mani padme hum'. A string of words faithful to Tibetan beliefs, yet in an entirely unusual context.
