Julie Davenport, a cellist with the prestigious St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, is trying to put her life back together after her beloved husband dies in a terrible plane crash. After an extended leave of absence, she returns to the beautiful Powell Hall to resume her successful career, while continuing her struggle with grief. It isn’t long before her life is turned upside down again when she is followed on her drive home after her first rehearsal. She then begins to receive threatening phone calls. At first she is annoyed, but as the caller persists, annoyance turns to fear.
Within a few days a man claiming to be a detective shows up¬¬ at her home and informs her that her late husband’s plane crash may not have been an accident. He asks her many questions, which, to her dismay, she is unable to answer. Questioning how well she actually knew her late husband, she embarks on her own quest for answers only to be under attack and fearing for her life. Who is after her? What do they want? Who can she trust?
Not everyone is convinced that Julie is innocent. Is she unwittingly involved as a pawn in someone’s dangerous game? Or, is she the mastermind behind a scheme of fraud and murder? How did the quiet and privileged life of an unassuming symphony cellist, dedicated to bringing beautiful music to others become so Unharmonious?
My sister shared this book with me, knowing I would enjoy the St. Louis area setting, where we grew up. I enjoyed the story; I thought the writing was lackluster. The events, at times, unfolded in fits and starts, and while that could have worked in support of the story, I more often, found it disjointed. The same sense of overwhelm and speed could have been better finessed in their telling. The asides about the chocolate and the church, especially, were not looped into the story sufficiently. I like both those things, but it appears that the author wanted to include all the things she cared about in the book, whether or not they were relevant to the characters' story. Overall, it was a decent first effort by this author.
"Unharmonious" is an excellent choice if you want to rediscover the joy of reading or help someone pick a really good book. Fast paced, interesting plot and lovely scenery, smart pets included. I am looking forward to reading Laine Boyd's next books!
I especially enjoyed the local color. I got into the story right away (a feature that is important to me). This is a great beginning for an author. I'm looking forward to reading more of Boyd's works.
I just finished "Unharmonious" and really enjoyed it. There are twists that you are not expecting that keep you going to see how it is all going to come together. Laine Boyd also includes pets in this story, which I love, and also chocolate, which I also love! She has set it in St. Louis where I live so I enjoyed reading about my neighborhood, but if you have never even been to St. Louis you will still enjoy this book as she gives a lot of interesting info about the city! Great read for anytime of the year!
I loved the book! The characters were so real. The story line kept my interest the entire time. I can't wait to read more of Laine Boyd's books. I am hooked!
Awesome introduction to Laine and her wonderful writing skills! The picture she paints with words is outstanding! Mysteries are a favorite and Unharmonious did not disappoint. Can't wait to start the next book!
Julie loses her husband in a tragic accident. She has been inconsolable for weeks since it happened. Feeling a need to go back to work she calls the symphony manager and, let's him know she will be returning.
Su Li, her best friend and now her housekeeper leaves unexpectedly for California as her mother is dying.
After Su Li leaves Julie is followed home from practice and becomes fearful. Then starts receiving threatening phone calls.
Things start to spiral out of control leaving Julie scared and suspicious. She has no idea what the caller is a asking about.
Julie e is shocked to learn some truths about her husband Jack that make her question everything and everyone.
A well written romantic mystery with just enough action to keep things interesting and a romantic love story about 2 people who meet under a stressful situation and find love unexpectedly.
Impossible to put down. A friend recommended I read this and I'm so glad I did. Humor and suspense woven together, with terrific characters and an original, exciting story. I read this book earlier this month (in one sitting) and just finished her second book, Dinner and a Murder. Loved both books and highly recommend.
a riveting book! Rarely do I feel such a part of a story as I did this one. In many ways, it was predictable but how the predictions came about and played out were unexpected but quite plausible. Very well written.
