I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This story started off very strong. I really wanted to learn more about the world , the constructs , their structure and the enemies, the Xanthi. I felt compelled to keep reading and enjoyed the short sentence structure , it made for snappy reading . I also appreciated the message that this story was trying to convey , about rebellion , supporting each other and encouraging growth, no matter how small.
However, it did end up getting quite repetitive and without a clear driving plot or characters to get invested in it started to feel a bit sluggish to me. I think that if there was more time spent on Omen and Warden as they were at the start and more conflict with the Dominion and the Xanthi I would have continued to be engaged in the plot. There weren't really any challenges presented to them, they resolved any issues quite quickly and then it became a series of dialogue that became uninteresting. There was no journey and it unfortunately lost me.
This story definitely has potential and I love a good robot / AI / Construct based society . The status updates on the world at the beginning of each chapter were useful and unique .
My interpretation is that this is more of a commentary on how entities that have been controlled all of their lives handle having choice rather than the journey and adventure of getting to that point .
If that sounds interesting to you then please do give this a go!
