Oh Heck Yeah! I was wonderfully surprised by how great this novel was. From start to finish, this book delivered. Such a fun premise, combined with an excellent execution, and the whole package was delightful. This novel was not only very enjoyable, but it had layers of plot and character and generally just a lot more substance than I expected. I would highly recommend this novel to anyone and everyone.

It’s interesting that a novel focused around a store that sells sex toys ended up being a lot less explicit/spicy that I expected it to be. I find this specifically noteworthy because at this point, I think I have read four (I think?) novels that have the “a sex shop exists and someone is unhappy about it” plotline and in every case it ended up being a lot more mature (and less spicy) of a novel than I expected. Instead this novel uses the presence of the erotic tea store as a vehicle to address a characters issues regarding sex and sexuality in a very mature and heartwarming manner.

Rating: A+ / 5-Stars

Things I Loved:
-Oh the wonderful banter! It didn’t take long to get to this point and from then on out it was delightful.
-I love it when a cat hates everyone…….except THAT person??
-The tea shop is wonderfully quirky and not at all what I expected.
-Yay for therapy!
-THIS is what a grumpy/sunshine novel is supposed to be. This has set the standard that I will use from now on. She is ACTUALLY grumpy.
-Huzzah for clear communication (and how!) and respect for boundaries. Masterclass.
-The group interpersonal dynamics between Harriet, Cass, Kendal, and Shauna was delightful, creative, and fun.
-“This is the cutest fucking thing I have read” -Note that I wrote myself but neglected to include context for.
-“Sexual Sherpa”
-Complex family dynamics that require navigating. Times two!
-The sex was wonderful once it happened. So much communication and respect….and also super hot.
-“I’m going to stand”
-Wonderful job of addressing and working through trauma responses. Secon shout-out for therapy!
-The character growth. Bravo. This is how its done!!

Nitpicky Complaints:
-The timeline/pacing was a little strange at times. This book did the thing where the timeline suddenly accelerates a lot as you get closer to the end. I understand why, but it’s a little strange to me for a novel to go at a snail’s pace and then suddenly start skipping entire months at a time.
-I wished we got a bit more resolution for Harriet’s family.
-I’m surprised by how few sex toys were mentioned at the shop. It doesn’t really matter but I expected more is all.

Welcome to Ero-TEA-Ca was such a refreshing surprise! It’s not quite like anything I’ve read from Alyson before—in the best way possible. I mean, a romance set in a sex-positive, LGBTQ+ inclusive tea shop? That definitely sounds like a place I'd be interested to go, if only there was one in my city!

I adored watching Harriet slowly melt Cassandra’s Ice Queen vibe. The grumpy/sunshine trope was spot-on here, and the slow-burn romance was paced just right. I loved how they both respected each other’s boundaries and actually talked things through—about their relationship and their personal struggles. By the end, their connection felt so natural and real.
Cassandra’s journey was especially touching. Seeing her grow more comfortable with her sexuality and open up about her past with her mom was such a powerful moment. And I have to give props to Alyson for handling sex and sexuality in such a respectful, thoughtful way. It’s still such a “taboo” topic in a lot of places, and it’s a rare thing to see it portrayed this well in the few others sapphic romances I've read.

The side characters also brought so much warmth to the story. Kendal staying friends with Cassandra after their divorce? Loved it. Nabi and Kevin being so supportive of Harriet's ideas? Even better. They all had their own little quirks that made them feel like real people.

If you’re into romances that are rich in emotion, full of character depth, and have that perfect slow-burn payoff, this one’s a must-read.

“Ero-TEA-Ca: We're open” was delightful. A tea shop that also sells sex toys and is a safe place for everyone. What a great concept! Why isn't there something like this in my city?

However, Cass, the coffee shop owner, is not at all enthusiastic about the new shop. She fears that her customers will leave because of the obscenity of the tea shop. Harriet, the owner of “Ero-TEA-Ca,” tries everything to change Cass's mind, and at the same time, she notices that Cass attracts her in a very special way. But Cass isn't dating, not after her divorce from her wife.

I loved the communication between Cass and Harriet. Harriet in particular blew me away. Her openness and straightforwardness and her enormous patience. Seeing how she gradually cracked open Cass's shell was impressive. At first, I found Cass a little too grumpy, but thanks to Harriet, I liked Cass more and more with every chapter. The development of this relationship was simply enormous and at the same time so beautiful because it simply showed what a good basis for communication means from the very beginning. The humor in this book was also great! Some of the dialogues between Harriet and Cass were just hilarious, especially at the beginning when Harriet tried to lure Cass out of her shell. I giggled sooooo much.

I just loved the message of this book. So positive. And sex-positive. The spice was really great too, even if it took a while to get there. Cass and Harriet's story didn't need a 3-act breakup! And I didn't miss it at any point.

I absolutely love Alyson Root's writing! She has rarely disappointed me so far. Her books are hard to put down and she always comes up with new ideas. A really lovely book that I enjoyed very, very much. Great humor, great vibes, steamy, romantic, great communication, adorable main characters. Highly recommended!

This is a DNF for me. I liked Harriet, the owner of the tea shop, but damn, Cassandra is an effing project that I’m just not willing to take on. There’s nothing to like. She’s insecure, she’s straight up mean, and rude. There’s no reasons given by 50% for the awfulness. Like, I love some grumpy / sunshine but when sunshine has to practice therapy and parenting on grumpy, that’s not the basis for a romance. That’s recipe for disaster and resentment. And sunshine is 11 years younger than grumpy and she’s parenting her!!! No, just ick.

Such a sweet story!! I especially really loved the whole dislike-to-love vibe between Cass and Harriet, it was so much fun to read.
Speaking of Cass, she totally stole the show for me, she was super relatable and sooo sweet, and I adored her grumpy side just as much as how hard she works on herself through therapy later in the book. Watching her growth made me love her even more.

Harriet was amazing too!! She’s so understanding and supportive, and the way she helps Cass get better just melted me. I loved their dynamic and how healthy it was! Such a treasure for real.

The writing was great, the pace was amazing as well, and honestly…the spicy scenes?? So sexy and satisfying hehe 🔥.

Overall, a really wonderful read. Definitely recommend if you’re into a sweet romance with some spice!

Great book just my cup of tea! Have read a lot of Alyson Root so big fan. She always creates such strong characters with hidden trauma and/or personality flaws.
Cass and Harriet are loveable and amazing. The slow burn of their developing relationship was such a page turner.
I loved the natural humour and phrasing that somehow sticks with you 'emotionally she was mashed potato'. The pacing was nice and additional characters just right for the story.
Read this book.

This book was such a vibe! ‘Welcome to Ero-TEA-Ca’ by Alyson Root basically felt like a hug, a giggle, and a cheeky wink all rolled into one. I went in expecting something light and quirky, but wow, I did not expect to come out this invested in the characters! I’m giving it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. And honestly, it only missed that last star because of some resolution pacing (I’ll get to that later).

So the setup: we’ve got Cassandra, 41, a grumpy acerbic coffee enthusiast with layers of emotional baggage (and I mean that in the best, most relatable way possible). Then there’s Harriet, 30, sunshine incarnate with the boldness of someone who knows exactly who she is but doesn’t tip over into being naive. Their dynamic? I am sold from the get-go. The age-gap, grumpy/sunshine energy, Oxford street backdrop—it’s basically tailor-made for cozy romance readers who also don’t mind a little spice in their tea or coffee.

What really worked for me was Cassandra’s POV. Following her as she slowly unpacks her own history and personal struggles felt authentic. Like, she’s flawed, she’s trying, she’s messy at times, and… I love that! Harriet, meanwhile, is such a breath of fresh air. She’s direct, she’s playful, and her forwardness never reads as immature. Together, their chemistry just makes sense to me. The way they’re both self-aware of their own quirks? Honestly, goals!

Now, let me talk about the side characters, because they deserve their flowers too! This book is packed with them, and instead of being overwhelming, they add so much color and humor. My standouts: Kendal, Cass’s bestie and ex-wife (the dynamic there is honestly iconic), and Nabi, Harriet’s bestie, who absolutely had me laughing every time she popped up. The banter, the sass, the genuine care—they’re the type of fictional friends I wish I could text in real life.

Now if I had one gripe, then it’s that some of the heavier personal conflicts tied up a little too neatly. Like Cassandra’s relationship with her mother… I guess I wanted more mess, more lingering complexity, because real life rarely resolves that cleanly and quickly. It wasn’t enough to ruin the story for me, but it did leave me wanting a little more grit.

Overall, though? This was such a fun, cozy, slightly smutty ride. It’s not only perfect for tea and coffee lovers but also, let’s be real, sex toy enthusiasts like yours truly 😉 If you’re in the mood for something that’s equal parts heartwarming, funny, and steamy, this one is definitely worth curling up with!

Cass is the grouchy woman co-owning the excellent coffee shop on Oxford high street, with her ex-wife. She has an attitude problem with everything, but especially with the erotic tea shop opening next door, in the property that she wanted, to extend her cafe into a library.
Harriet has spent her life learning about tea, and now with the help and support of her siblings (and the painful objections of their parents) she is opening Ero-Tea-Ca - an elegant tea shop, with tasteful erotic touches. However, once she encounters the ‘sourpuss’ in the cafe next door, she first feels frustrated, but later grows to enjoy their verbal sparring.
This is lovely. Another gentle story set in England, with a whole cast of warm (and not so warm) characters!

I loved this book! I was an ARC reader. Admittedly, my first time reading anything by Alyson Root and I am all in! I want to read all of her books. As far as this book, I loved the realistic quirks of one of the main characters and her growth throughout the story. Light-hearted yet hot and spicy. Highly recommend!

This was a beautiful and unique story by this amazing author! It was so hard to put down when life wanted in. I loved the humor and banter especially with our MCs, Harriet and Cass, but also with so many of the supportive side characters. This story was well paced and hooks you right from the start and doesn’t let go until the end (or beyond since I’m still smiling just thinking of their story). I loved the build up of Cass and Harriet’s relationship and very much enjoyed all the things they experienced together as their relationship progressed;). I wish we had safe spaces such as these available. Highly recommend!!

I honestly really love finding books I’ve never heard of before and I love when I actually enjoy reading said books even more. Overall a very fun time and delivered exactly what was promised.

Absolutely not smut heavy despite what the title might imply, very heavily plot driven but I think both characteristics are positives!

5/5 ORIGINAL AND REFRESHING

I have a pretty packed handful of Alyson Root books under my belt, no shame to say I have ranted to whoever will listen to me about the Loch & Key series...I have a new favorite in Welcome to Ero-TEA-Ca: We're Open! I'm going to be so lovingly annoying IRL after this releases Sept. 02, 2025.

This author is so good at throwing something original at me, that I don't see in other books and I love this. I know it can't just be me. I have never even imagined a place so lovely as Ero-TEA-Ca and now I am not sure my life will be complete until I get to some version of it!

I read this immediately after a book that p*ssed me off a little bit (a lotta bit) and it was the PERFECT book for me to have picked up. It was everything that I needed, truly. Harriet, owner of the scandalous (ahem, if you ask the ill-informed) new tea shop on the block, is ever the bubbly optimistic and I loved her so easily. She overextends her grace even when she knows it's to her own detriment. She believed in her dreams so deeply, worked so hard and fought too many unnecessary battles. Cassandra, perfectionist/judgmental/co-owner of the coffee shop next door to Ero-TEA-Ca, was a roller coaster of a woman that I did not want to get off of. I loved watching her character address her discomfort head on and fight to be the woman she wanted to be. This was instantly for me one of those books I will always wish I could read again for the first time.

Very well written characters - both main and side characters. Cassandra's struggle with her feelings around sex was so interesting to me and I was rooting for her so hard on her journey to work through them. I enjoyed each Harriet and Cass individually, I enjoyed their unconventional friendship unfolding, I realllly enjoyed their passionate and blossoming romance. The cherry on top? No third act break up...if I had to complain about something it would be the very few times Harriett kept those lips zipped. There was SO MUCH of a focus in the relationship between these two of communication and check ins and YES, YES, YES.

I received an eARC of Welcome to Ero-TEA-Ca: We're Open! from the author in exchange for my honest review.

I don’t know why I held off reading this because I love Alyson Root’s books. Present me thinks past me is an idiot!
Sprinkled with Root's trade mark humorous lines, characters are quickly well drawn and I am settling in for a decent length, amusing novel.
Actually, as I progress through the novel I know why I didn’t pick it up before now. I am like one of the mains. I saw the title and I thought it would be a certain type of book, that wouldn’t be my cup of tea. It so is! Present me knows past me is an idiot. Don’t be past me….. This has well drawn characters, amusing lines, supportive and life based advice for how we can all adult better! It also has heart and "scenes" that are the same temperature water should be heated to before making tea...... like a good cup of tea, the ingredients are perfectly infused when, in the book, everything heats up. The character development continues through this and that is why the book has heart and is 5 stars!

Thanks for the Arc reader Alyson!

✨As if losing out on buying the unit next door to expand her coffee shop
wasn't bad enough, Cassandra Beaufort now has to deal with the opening of a Tea shop! And not just any Tea shop!! But ERO-TEA-CO 😱 run by the very attractive Harriet and her best friend Nabi.
The two friends along with Harriet's ever supportive older Siblings Diane and Kevin are determined to make a go of it. Not only selling tea but SEX toys!.
You can quite easily picture Cassandra clutching at her pearls, If she wore them lol.

Harriet Kirkwell and her two siblings have VERY straight-laced parents, they're totally unsupportive of all of their children! Who seem to have followed a similar path, Sex Positiveness. They 100% have each other's backs.

Harriet is her perfect match and the breath of fresh air that Cass needs, bringing the sunshine to her life she didn't realise she was missing.

✨Cassandra is everything I love in a character.. She's a little bit snotty, a full on Ice Queen, has a total attitude about how things should be done , high standards, prickly and gets flustered around Harriet 😂 which was fun to read. But there's so much more to Cass than meets the eye and Alyson writes her beautifully

Mixed in we have fabulous side characters. Kendal is Cassandra's Ex wife and her best friend, they run
The Oxford Beanery together.

Nabi, Harriet's best friend with a sugar addiction that could rival a toddlers 😂

When I say this one is funny and well worth your money! 😂... I'll be jumping at a physical copy when the time comes 😜... Thanks to Alyson for letting me check it out before it's release 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🌶️🔥😂.. who knew teapots and 🍆 go together lolll

Few quotes
*“Titty muffins and bakewells. Got it. No boob crumpets.”

*“So that’s it, then,” Harriet began, her heart full of joy. “The final product for the gift sets. We have the teapots, cups and saucers, tea and dildos.”

*Cass regarded her with what could only be seen as contempt. “What are you wearing?” Harriet looked down in confusion. “Um…my work uniform.” Wasn’t that obvious? “You can’t wear that. Take it off!”
“Wow, you could buy me dinner first,” Harriet laughed.

Teaotally Brilliant!

Harriet is following her dreams by opening her tea shop that just happens to be on the erotic side, but coffee shop owner Cass, who is next door is not happy about it. Trying to be friendly, Harriet does all she can to encourage Cass to give her tea shop a try but she is reluctant. As a growing attraction to Cass, guides Harriet, they slowly get to know one another better.

I loved this! It was fun, uplifting, had comedy elements to keep the heavier reasons for Cass’ disdain about Harriet’s shop from making the story too serious. I adored Harriet and Cass, with the opposites attract thing going on behind them and the age-gap. It just made the perfect story. Neither Harriet nor Cass had been through great experiences in the past relating to family, but Harriet was lucky to have supportive siblings who inspired her and helped her. When we started to learn about Cass’ background, then it explained so much of her behaviour and resistance to the tea shop.

Harriet’s hopeful spirit was truly uplifting. It was great how she wasn’t going to give up on Cass, but remained respectful of her feelings always. She just wanted them all to be friendly and succeed. When Harriet started getting under Cass’ skin, then great things and moments started to happen and I felt privileged in getting to experience what was happening between them. They were a real team in the end, supporting one another through not only their careers, but through personal demons, and new dreams.

I don’t think my review can ever do justice to how much fun I had reading this. It was quite the experience, while being easy and absorbing me into the story from the very start. I couldn’t put it down and highly recommend it.

This book is about Harriet, who opens an erotic tea shop. Note: this doesn't mean it's an erotic novel!

The tea shop is located next to Cassandra's coffee shop. Cassandra isn't exactly a likable character. She's uptight, has a short fuse, and is rather grumpy. Harriet, on the other hand, is a ray of sunshine. A radiant and sociable person. So I couldn't understand why she felt attracted to Cass. And so quickly, too.

Of course, the interactions between these two polar opposites made for a fun read, especially when combined with the fun side characters.

Not much sexiness happens in the first 60%, except for some banter about glass dildos and provocative images on teapots. The steamy bits come later. The steaminess builds steadily towards the end of the book. Cass is a completely different woman by then.

Ero-Tea-Ca completely swept me away. What stood out to me most was the incredible depth of the characters—every one of them felt richly layered, thoughtfully developed, and emotionally real. Alyson Root has a brilliant way of revealing who her characters are through their subtle choices, flaws, and quiet moments. I found myself genuinely invested in their journeys, rooting for them, and thinking about them long after I’d finished the last page.

The worldbuilding and atmosphere were beautifully done, but it was the characters who truly made this story shine. This book struck that rare balance of being both compelling and heartfelt, and I loved every moment of it.

A fantastic read—I highly recommend it.

Yet ANOTHER brilliant original gem from my newly fave sapphic author, Alyson Root! First off, the TITLE! Come on!! And the cover art? Aesthetically divine in silhouette especially with that positively "scrumptious" title! I mean, COME ON!! It's AWARD-winning piece for its audacity to be ingenious, downright creative if you ask me! Oh, Alyson Root, you've gone and done it again!! Bloody well done!

This book oozes everything you'll ever want in a sapphic romance! It's chockfull of devilish deliciousness that you don't know what to do with yourself because you can't believe that one story in one book could be told with every endearing trope imaginable in it, crafted into an unadulterated romance that stays with you long after you finish reading it! Yep, I'm talking about humour, like laugh-out-loud, big chuckles kind of humour in the writing with a relatable narrative that resonates so much that you can't help but picture the hilarity in those scenes depicted on the pages! Root has a wicked sense of humour. It's evident in all her other books. My cuppa tea (pun intended!) - dry, sarcastic, British.

Root writes a crackin' enemies-to-friends-to-lovers romance. The hilarity! The awkwardness! The chemistry!! Nevermind that it's also an age-gap situation where the older one is so rigid and set in her ways that you can literally see a stick permanently stuck up her arse. And then you have the younger one who's this happy-clappy, cheerful sunshine who's smitten with the aloof grump who can't seem to get away from her. All the while their chemistry just keeps getting more insatiable by the minute! Oh, Root's brilliant conversational prose makes the reading so much more fun and engaging, like you're actually there witnessing all their shenanigans through the looking glass!

I love Root's narrative style. She takes on the popular enemies-to-lovers trope and turn it on its head by making their contentious relationship in the beginning into a proper friendship and before you know it, their friendship shifts ever-so organically, it's like it just happens on its own (instead of being the product of Root's storytelling), you know? Well, for me, that is.

Reading Root's stories has me forgetting that I'm actually reading a book instead of observing a real-life story playing out before my eyes! That's because Root's conversational writing is grounded in authenticity regardless of the situation she's given her characters in telling her stories. That's why I love her slow-burn style of building a relationship, be it platonic or romantic. Her writing is intentionally communicative so all the interactions, verbal or non-verbal (head space), are grounded, focused on the detail like giving the convo a close-up treatment so the reader can relate at a more micro level instead of the usual macro (overall) style that's more interpretative.

As a result, the reader is right there with the characters every step of the way throughout the story. The other author that gives me that acute sense of authentic realism when reading their story is Jacqueline Ramsden. Curiously, both are Brits! Ha! Whaddya know! Nah, just a coincidence, I reckon! ;)

I absolutely adore both characters in this story, not to mention, the incredibly hilarious situation that both these lovies are dealt with, especially poor grumpy, clueless Cass! I was practically cackling throughout the book my poor pup thought his mama had gone completely mad!! I LOVE dry, sarcastic humour!! They're the absolute best and Root knocks it out of the park at every single turn!

Not only is "Ero-Tea-Ca" a fun rom-com, it's also a poignant story as it deals with misconceptions, taboo, family bullying, blood vs found/chosen family, and a stark reminder about something that's not mentioned or discussed more within our community, which is that just because someone is queer or anywhere in the lgbtq+ spectrum and has had their share of being bullied or mistreated, doesn't mean that they don't turn around and do the same (or worse) to someone else who's different or misunderstood.

That scene, which I won't mention since you'll know when you read it, was powerful when Root unpacked it with emotional honesty. Far too often we forget to take stock of our own actions when we're too busy focussing on what's being done to us. When we internalise something and leave it unresolved or ignored altogether, it tends to fester within our psyche and before we know it, we lash out with the very action that we'd otherwise hate to be done to ourselves. For e.g., internalised homophobia, internalised racism, in this case, internalised bullying, the ever-vicious cycle of the abused becoming the abuser and vice versa... you know what I'm getting at.

So, I really appreciate Root including it purposefully because she didn't have to write that scene in and it wouldn't have affected the story adversely but including it truly sets the story apart from other rom-coms. There is a purpose in telling a rom-com that involves an adult shop and a highly disapproving individual who's queer. Additionally, whilst the adult-themed tea shop is obviously a tool for comedy in this story, it's also an opportunity for raising awareness and a learning experience for people who may still hold certain bias or misconception about the subject matter.

This book was a surprise to me. I went in with a certain idea of what it would mean to me, but it completely blows all my anticipation, expectation, imagination out of the water and I absolutely can't get enough of it! This story is honest-to-goodness top-notch, affecting, intentional, authentic and real. The slow-burn is sizzlingly intoxicating, the build-up of their physical and emotional attraction is oh-so steamy and sensual at the same time, Cass and Harriet's characters just tug at your heartstrings. Oh, Cass!!

Root hits the nail writing Cassandra's character with pinpoint accuracy, what with all the idiosyncrasies and nitty-gritty details of what makes Cass, Cass, essentially. Ah, pure gem! Her growth throughout her journey is written with so much care, understanding, honesty and openness, it's hard to fathom that she's only a fictional character! Needless to say, she's one of my favourite sapphic characters now!

Not surprisingly, this is yet another unforgettable story from Alyson Root that I will be revisiting time and time again, that's for sure! "Welcome to Ero-Tea-Ca" is now on my Top 10 list of Favourite Books of 2025!! YES! She's one of my newfound faves now and I'm almost caught up with all her previous books! This latest one is such a phenom addition to her stellar work, thusfar! I can't wait to read and experience her next creation!! Bring it!

A MUST-READ!!! One of the BEST Enemies-to-Lovers sapphic romance I've ever read, not to mention, memorable!!

Welcome to Ero-TEA-Ca is without a doubt one of my favorite Alyson Root books! The story concept alone is incredibly unique and it was executed to perfection. I mean - a tea shop that sells erotic painted tea pots and handcrafted glass s3x toys and is just an all around sex positive, LGBTQ+ affirming and safe space? I need it to exist in real life so I can go there!! Such a brilliant idea!

I knew I was going to love these characters from the beginning, even when Cass was being all curmudgeony and I didn’t yet understand why. I absolutely adored her and my heart still aches for her. I know what it is like to feel so incredibly broken that you think no one would or should ever want to be with you, that your quirks and issues are too many and too much. I know how hard it is to let people in and let them see you fully and completely because you are scared they’ll leave once they do. I also loved seeing misophonia representation! It made me feel seen and I’ve never read a book with that in it before. Cass was such a beautifully complex character and her growth arc is nothing short of incredible. She is definitely a bit socially awkward and grumpy more often than she’s not, but it’s all part of her charm if you ask Harriet.

Harriet is the utter opposite of Cass. She’s open and laid back and full of light. But for some reason, she can’t help but be drawn to the sourpuss that is Cassandra Beaufort. That scowl just does something for her! Their banter and (sometimes) flirtatious verbal sparring was top notch. Harriet was also utterly perfect for Cass and their enemies to friendship to lovers arc was the absolute sweetest of slowburns. The patience and understanding and open communication about boundaries and needs and continual check ins - hello healthy relationship! I just absolutely love these two together. And when that spice gets spicin’ it is 🥵🥵🥵! There are definitely some kinky scenes but also some of the most wholesome moments as well and it was exquisite!

Plus you have all these incredible side characters and lots of diverse rep as well. There’s Kendall, Cass’s ex-wife/best friend/cafe co-owner which is the absolute most sapphic thing ever lol. And then you’ve got Harriet’s brother Kevin and their friend, Nabi. And of course, Mr. Whiskers. Plus so many other wonderful big and small characters who each added something meaningful to the story. The only characters I did not like were Harriet’s parents (nor was I meant to).

Welcome to Ero-TEA-ca is a relatively comedic romance but, as Alyson does so well, there is also incredible depth underneath that more playful surface. Everything is perfectly blended into this delightfully sweet and sexy story about finding someone who sees the whole of who you are and cherishes every single part - the good, the bad, the mess, the quirks, the eccentricities, and everything you thought unlovable. And I couldn’t love it more.

I received an ARC from the author and this is my honest and voluntary review.

📚 ARC Review 📚 Thanks to the author for this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

An erotic tea shop as the setting for sapphic love? Yes please.

This sapphic rom-com delivers both humour and heat, following the dual perspectives of Harriet and Cassandra (Cass) in an entertaining rivals-to-lovers dynamic. Rivals, in the sense that Harriet opens an erotic tea shop, Ero-Tea-Ca, right next door to Cass’ coffee shop, The Oxford Beanery. And Cass? She’s not exactly thrilled about this sexy new neighbour.

This was my second read by this author, and once again, the characterisation is original and engaging. Cass initially comes across as a grump: controlled, particular and just a bit stuffy. But of course, there’s more to her than meets the eye. She’s layered, shaped by past trauma and quiet fears. With a little push from her ex-wife and best friend, Kendal: “Have an adventure. Get a little naughty” - Cass begins to step outside her comfort zone.

Enter Harriet: the sunshine to Cass’s storm. She doesn’t just brighten up the street, she shakes things up for Cass in the best way. I loved watching Harriet gently open Cass’ mind and heart.

I enjoyed following as their tentative friendship grows into something more intimate, with shared vulnerabilities (difficult parents, past fears) and the beginnings of a workplace romance - with plenty of delicious tension and foreplay.

And the author had my full attention when Cass asked Harriet to 'teach her a few things' 🫠 What follows is a mix of sexy, erotic, and sweet - with Harriet’s thoughtfulness and emotional intelligence helping Cass relax, enjoy herself, and explore her sensuality without pressure.

Overall, this is a playful, sex-positive story about opposites attracting, embracing your desires, setting boundaries, and finding someone who respects and grows with you ❤️

So funny and full of wonderful, totally unique characters! I found myself giggling so many times, even laughing until I cried once. That's really rare for me and then I know it's something special. And well, you can say that! A unique idea, implemented by really interesting people.
I would go to Ero-TEA-Ca all the time and find myself visiting the grump next door.
I love Grumpy meets Sunshine Stories.
Cass is the epitome of grumpy with a lot of Ice Queen qualities. The contrasts in this book are enormous. Not just with Cass and Harriet, but also with the totally uptight parents and their sex-positive children! Brilliant!
Cass also grows up with a very open-hearted mother and therefore has a lot of baggage from the past that has manifested itself in some problems and stubborn views.
It is unthinkable that an erotic teashop would open next to her perfect coffee shop. This can only be a disaster for everyone, and it doesn't matter how good, sweet, and sunny the new neighbor is and looks with her frivolous views!
Despite the book's lightness, there are still a lot of things that are addressed and worked through.
Therapy is an essential component, as is insight and a willingness to change.
Mutual respect and support. For me, this love story was absolutely round and ended in blissful harmony.
Simply beautifully written! And of course it’s also hot 😏
Thanks so much for the ARC Alyson Root! This is my honest review.

I usually enjoy Alyson Root's books and this was no exception.
Harriet is opening a shop - it's a tea shop, and apart from many varieties of tea, it sells erotica - art, wonderfully creatively designed tea pots with depictions of a variety of sex acts painted on, glass dildos ( made by her brother) and many other delights. Her sister is a sex therapist - and her parents are dreary and ashamed of Harriet and her shop.
It's next door to a coffee shop - which happens to be run by ex-wives Cassie and Kendal. Kendal is all for it, Cassie does not want that shop next door - it will lower the tone of the street! Cassie is very against it, and needs to be won over.
There's friendships, sibling relationships, the dreaded parent relationships depicted here - all different and all really well written. And of course the relationship of the book - between Harriet and Cassie.
More than anything in this story I enjoyed the blossoming of Cassie. She reads to me as an anxious, neurodiverse woman, trying to overcome the trauma of growing up in a small community with a mother who was sex positive and didn't care who knew it. She was able, with time and support, and some sessions with Mistress Black, to identify what she thought she needed to do to begin to address some of her issues and flourish in a relationship with Harriett.

There is of course an epilogue.
This showed movement in their business and personal relationships and a special customised tea pot.

in which two women don't seem to realise they've chosen partners who represent a more approachable version of the worst parts of their mothers

I mean really. Harriet's mother is a cold judgemental bitch so she fixates on a repressed ice queen and says "I can fix her". meanwhile Cass's mother is a free-spirited libertine so she latches on to a sex-positive hippie who runs a tea shop with energy crystals and sex toys

amateur armchair psychology aside, it's a very sweet book. low conflict, low drama, lots of feelings, aggressively sex-positive. Harriet really is endlessly sweet and patient as Cass works through her many issues, and Cass for her part works diligently on herself and is the only person to directly address Harriet's awful parents

something I've come to really appreciate about low conflict and drama romances is how they centre focus on the hard work of communication. most real life romances don't struggle with dramatic third act breakups, love triangles, or violent crime organisations (unless everyone else is having much more interesting lives than I am). they struggle because communicating is hard and makes you feel like shit and if it goes wrong you spend years if not decades replaying the moment over and over in your head

so if anything Harriet and Cass being open and honest about their feelings is more impressive than if Harriet had waited outside Cass's window with a boombox and coffee beans as part of a lesbian mating dance

When Harriet opens a sex-positive, LGBTQ+ inclusive tea shop next door to Cassandra’s prim and proper café, all hell breaks loose. Cass, who brings grumpy to a whole new level, is dead set on doing what she can to make sure the tea shop next door doesn’t open, or thrive, in their well respected street. After a few run-ins with Harriet, Harriet offers her to trade places with one of her employees for a week, just to show Cass that her tea shop really isn’t that bad. Reluctantly, Cass agrees.
As the week goes on, Cass’ impression of both the tea shop and its owner softens. The women get to know each other, and we find out just why Cass is so grumpy, and while I found her to be incredibly difficult to like in the beginning, she ended up being my favourite character. I loved seeing her character develop, and working on, and overcoming her trauma. Towards the end, she was even able to stand up for herself and for others on certain topics, something that was unheard of before she met Harriet.
A sweet and heartwarming story, with a sprinkle of some very delicious spice, that I will definitely read again.

I’ve read several books by this author before, and many of them have truly resonated with me. At first, I was a little worried that the story might resemble one I’d read from another author, but the book pleasantly surprised me!

The development of both main characters is beautifully written, showing not only their individual growth but also how they evolve together. Because the story spans a longer period of time, their transformation feels natural and believable. The relationship between the main characters unfolds gradually and respectfully, honoring what each of them needs and is able to give at different moments.

The connections with parents, close friends, and an ex-wife add meaningful depth to the story. Not every relationship is perfect, and that realism makes the book even more compelling. I especially appreciated how the characters learn to ask for help and give each other space—these moments strengthen both their relationship and their personal growth.

It’s a wonderful blend of story, emotional development, and romance. I was genuinely sad to reach the end! 4.5 stars.

I’m leaving this review voluntarily.
