Flashover: A Fated Mates Paranormal Dragon Shifter Romance

Rate this book
I thought the worst had already happened.

One flashover killed my entire crew. I survived, and the world called it a tragedy. I called it hell. Demoted. Disgraced. Haunted by flames I can’t explain. Now I train rookies in the Arizona heat, trying to outrun the fire still burning under my skin.

Then a new safety officer arrives. Kade Veyron, quiet, controlled, lethal in a way that sets every nerve on edge. He says he’s here to help. I’m pretty sure he’s here to watch me fall.

But the way he looks at me? It’s not suspicion. It’s possession.

And when the fires start acting wrong again, faster, hotter, targeted, I know this isn’t over. Someone’s using wildfire to hide something darker. And I’m the one they’ve marked to take the blame.

What they don’t know is the storm they’ve just unleashed.

Because Kade isn’t who he seems. And neither am I.

Wow this book is over the top. The intensity between Liv and Kade is so strong you wonder how they will survive it. She accepts from him what she has never accepted from anyone before and he knows that she will be his person like no one else ever has been.

Liv has been kicked a lot in a very short time period and by those who should have had her back. There is do much going on behind the seams but she holds her head up and keeps doing what she knows is right. Kade steps in and offers her a safe place to land. They are able to become each others strength and safety.

I received this ARC for free from the author and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

FLASHOVER is the second instalment in Delta James’s contemporary adult, FIREBOUND erotic, paranormal romance series focusing on the Blackstrike Unit, a team of smoke-jumping, dragon shifters. This is dragon shifter Kade Veyron, and fire fighter Liv Monroe.

Told from dual omniscient third person perspectives (Liv and Kade) FLASHOVER follows in the aftermath of a flashover that killed Liv Monroe’s entire crew, a disaster that has now placed a target on our heroine’s back. Demoted, and forced to train new recruits and rookies in the Arizona sun, Liv finds herself facing safety officer Kade Veyron, a man who is much more than he appears to be. Someone or something is targeting the training camp, and in spite of, or because of recent events, Liv has been marked as a potential suspect, and all eyes are on Liv as the incidents increase but one man is determined to prove Liv is innocent, and in doing so, dragon shifter Kade Veyron discovers the woman he is trying to save, is the woman that calls to his heart.

The world building follows Kade and Liv as they battle the rumors, the elements, the questionable fires, and the pull that burns between dragon and mate. The familiarity of the fires, and the unnatural burn forces Kade and Liv to look to the past, and the people who had targeted our story line heroine.

The relationship between Liv and Kade is one of immediate attraction. Kade knows immediately that Liv is his fated mate but when someone takes aim at our story line heroine, Kade is determined to claim the woman that calls to his heart. The $ex scenes are intimate and provocative without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of energetic and determined secondary and supporting characters including several firefighters, dragon shifters, and a new group known as the Ignis Syndicate that are determined to prove Kade and the entire Blackstrike team are more than human firefighters.

FLASHOVER is a story of secrets and lives, betrayal and vengeance, power and control, magic and mayhem , acceptance and love. The fast pace premise is detailed and dramatic but the author’s writing style has changed virtually overnight-more flowery, poetic and descriptive-the world building is more elaborate and colorful ; the romance is fast and furious; the characters are charismatic, dynamic and strong.

DRAGON MAGIC ANSWERS THE CALL OF DESTINY

“Welcome to Firebound. Where the smokejumpers are dragons—and the only way to tame the flames is to fall in love.”

The majority of the story takes place in Arizona. Liv Monroe leads recruits in drills. Her life changed when she was in Bitterroot, Montana, and lost her team. She became the scapegoat in the incident because she lived. Demoted and moved into a training position.

“You’re not just a target, Monroe. You’re the spark.”

Kade Veyron is part of the Blackstrike Unit and is IA Safety Officer, Region 3. He is watching the drills and, along with Liv, discovering sabotage—enough to get others killed. The one thing Kade wasn’t expecting was Liv Monroe—his mate. He needs to do what he can to protect her, and he will create a special pendant for her to wear, something he can connect to.

“It’s a summons. A call to action. A fire-song from the bones of the earth, demanding to be reborn.”

The story is a mystery, with suspense, danger, paranormal, and passion. The Blackstrike unit is unique, talented, and also dragon shifters. They have been around for a long time, some more than hundreds of years, and others, even longer. It won’t be long before they see clues to lead them to more questions about how the fires are set and how they react. They will find symbols as messages from the author of destruction. Someone is altering the accelerant used in their practice burns—and it is up to Kade and Liv to discover who and why. It is also a romance and mating between Kade and Liv.

“Around us, sparks swirl and dance—vibrant and alive—as dragon magic answers the call of destiny.”

Kade: They’ll come, Liv. With questions. With orders.
Liv: Let them.
Kade: Then you and I burn together—fierce, loyal, and unbreakable. Not in flame, not in death, but in everything that’s left when the smoke clears.

Kade: Heart and flame.
Liv: Always.

The story does not end on a cliffhanger, but instead, will segue into the next book, Scorched Earth, featuring Rafe Maddox, Cami Rhodes, and the rest of the Blackstrike Unit.

Another intense read by Delta James! Flashover is Kade, the Dragon, and Liv, the firefighters story.

Surviving a Flashover is nothing short of a miracle, But Liv did just that, being the only person on her team that did… and then she was made the scape-goat. Stripped of her title and position within the unit, she became a rookie trainer. But she was determined to rise from the ashes like a phoenix and prove that it was not her mistake that caused the loss of her teams lives.

Enter Kade, watching her from afar, until he secures a position to be close to her, to continue to watch and to wait for Liv to notice him.

A good backstory of Liv's ex working for the enemy, Ignis, trying to eradicate or discredit Liv so she does not get too close to uncovering her ex's and his band of misfits true evil intentions. Making her the scape goat with the intention of her being released from duty was going according to plan, until she is given a new position, just lower in rank. Doesn't mean she is not still on the trail on who caused the flashover 6 months earlier!

Kade has a secret, one which is calling out to Liv. His Dragon can sense she is important to them and the will to protect what is theirs is overwhelming.

Plenty of action, heat (and not only from the constant fires that they have to battle) in and out of the bedroom, actually more action out of the bedroom, lol, anyhow steamy sexy scenes go a long way to falling for Liv's Dragon man, Kade. He helps her to clear her name and she comes out as a hero. Her ex, not so much!

But Ignis is still out there, causing havoc and searching for what should be left alone.

The soft ending points you in the direction of Rafe and Cami's story as The Team from the Blackstrike Unit return in Scorched Earth.

A very good book, well written, descriptions were off the charts and character development was great. I did find though that the relationship between Liv and Kade happened very fast with really no lead up. he was watching everything trying to protect her, then basically he let her know he was standing with her protecting her then boom they are together. really wasn't any conflict about her feeling not ready for a relationship after her broken engagement, or wondering why her. it was kind of like insta-love which was rather boring. should have been more focus put on their relationship and its development before they just end up bonding. while the plot around her being blamed for loss of her crew and her demotion and her new status as trainer while trying to figure out who was sabotaging things was excellent there really wasn't enough detail and development plot wise getting them together. all the excitement, danger and detail was around the fight to find the bad guys and keep her alive, but its the romance of the relationship that really should have been as much of the focus of the plot. it just seemed more an after thought like we'll throw in this romance as part of the story but its not a big deal. there wasn't even a lot of reaction when she found out what he was plus it had her as having some kind of special powers too without really explaining how. then at the end there is no details about her becoming a dragon shifter herself or her transition which should have been very important but it was just mentioned in passing over and done already like one sentence. that was very disappointing. there definitely could have been some improvements in this book to make it 5 stars.
I received an arc copy from book sirens and this is my honest voluntary review.

If you read Ashfall you were introduced to Kade, a part of the Blackstrike Unit and an ancient dragon. Here we get the privilege of joining along as he meets his match in Liv. While she's not anywhere near as old as he is, she has endured enough suffering abd loss for multiple lifetimes. Despite everything that's been heard on her shoulders, she refuses to simply stand by and accept the status quo. These two may have been throwing off sparks (the wrong kind) when they first met, but through the process of getting to really know eachother, they realize a kindred spirit - one not willing to turn a blind eye to injustice and evil.

This book is full of action, drama, vengeance,, struggle, determination, and conspiracy, yet it also has tenderness, support, care, passion and love. The constant threats and calls to action will keep you actively engaged and wanting to read "just one more chapter". Delta has a way of keeping you on the edge of your seat, even if you believe you know where the plot is taking you. There is always a surprise or new adventure waiting just around the corner.

It's not necessary to have read Ashfall previously, but honestly why not? The ending provides a brief glimpse into the next book in the series, but I wouldn't consider it a cliffhanger. I'm thrilled to have been provided with a gift copy of this book and voluntarily provided this review. Happy Reading Y'all 📚

Firebound (book#2) in the Flashover series: A Fated Mates Paranormal Dragon Shifter Romance-ARC Review

I chose this book to provide an ARC review. This review contains no spoilers. Firebound is the first series I have read by Delta James.

Delta James fans will not be disappointed with this second instalment in Flashover, her new dragon-shifter romance series. It delivers her characteristic fevered, fast-paced, beautifully written language. For aspiring authors, she offers a master class in action-driven romance story telling. In contrast to the majority of character driven story telling in the romance genre.

Firebound is definitely not a stand alone. Flashover Book #1 , Ashfall: A Fated Mates Paranormal Dragon Shifter Romance, establishes the necessary background for the love story between Liv and Kade.

For those curious about the spice level- I would rate it at 1 / 5 chilli peppers. But her sustained effort using fire metaphors to describe the mate bond between two partners who work as a firefighter and fire investigator is extremely entertaining.

The book (and series so far) leaves the reader wanting to know more about how the fated mates dragon shifter magic works. The author also leaves you wanting to know more about what it would feel like to transform from a human woman into dragon.

Flashover is a dragon shifter romance where the main characters are also smoke jumpers...call me intrigued.🧐

Liv Monroe is living in the aftermath of losing her entire crew in a flashover and then being demoted for basically surviving. Enter Kade Veyron the safety officer, at her new job where Liv now trains new recruits and Kade makes sure she is following, you guessed it, safety procedures.

I felt for Liv, not only working in a man's world, which is bada$$, but then taking the brunt of blame when she was only ever doing her job. 😢

The relationship between Kade and Liv is intense and almost immediate, due to the fated mate aspect of the story. They both sense there is more than just basic chemistry between them. However, there is an ongoing plot that followed Liv to her new job and the threat that wiped out her last crew is lurking at her new jobsite. A lot of the story is focused on the suspense of who is targeting the crew and sabotaging them by causing fires, but the underlying heat between them is constantly there.

There is a big cast of side characters, some are more important than others, along with lots of suspense and intrigue in this shifter romance.

Thank you to BookSirens for the advance review copy and all opinions are my own.

If you’ve read 'Ashfall', you know Kade, a formidable member of the Blackstrike Unit and an ancient dragon. In this gripping sequel, we follow Kade as he encounters his equal in Liv. Set primarily in Arizona, Liv Monroe is not just a character; she is a leader, guiding recruits through rigorous drills. Her life was irrevocably altered in Bitterroot, Montana, where she lost her team and unfairly became the scapegoat for the tragedy, simply because she survived. As a result, she was demoted and assigned to a training position. Despite being younger than Kade, Liv has weathered enough hardship and loss to fill several lifetimes. She refuses to accept the status quo and stands strong against adversity.

While I relished the story, some parts challenged my understanding. The descriptions were intensely vivid, capturing every detail of a smokejumper’s training. The book is rich with technical insights into firefighting. It delivers a powerful mix of action, drama, vengeance, struggle, determination, and conspiracy, while also weaving in elements of tenderness, support, care, passion, and love. The relentless threats and urgent calls to action will grip you, compelling you to read "just one more chapter" long into the night.

I felt like I was covered in soot, ash, smoke, and dust by the time I finished this book. The descriptions were so vivid and detailed. There was also a fair amount of technical information associated with fighting fires. This book was full of action and suspense.

Kade and Liv's relationship was intense. They were so in tune with one another, it seemed like they were speaking their own language. Every subtlety, nuance, body movement, facial expression, and one knew what the other was thinking or feeling.

There was something about Greer that didn't make much sense to me. I understood he was determined to carry out his plans for Liv. I didn't understand why. Especially after the conversation he had with himself later in the book. It seemed to me like he was the one who limited the choices Liv had available.

I think I must have overlooked the description of Liv's dragon. I don't remember reading the specifics of her transformation, just that she did shift. I also missed that element of camaraderie between the dragon shifters that I felt in the first book. I am looking forward to the next book.

I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.

A simply wonderful second book in series, great characters and riveting plot
I have to sat that this book was a simply fantastic read from start to finish, the details are splendid and the fire information is a simply amazing read that will most definitely educate the reader in details that are to do with firefighting under dire circumstances.
Kade and Liv have a smoking hot relationship and I am able to say that they are determined and there was something about Greer which left me wondering why it had happened amd then I discovered that the reason became more obvious later in the chapter.
The description of Livs dragon was a wonderful thing especially the actual change that she went through and I am sure that other readers will enjoy the details regarding this transformation. The interaction between the dragons was a necessary evil and I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the wonderful writing.

The back story opens with a mind-blowing loss and betrayal that shatters Liv's world. The descriptions of fire and danger and damages wrought made the fire and the story live and breathe!

The relationship between Liv and Kade is filled with tension and very mixed emotions at least on Liv's part. Not knowing if she wants to punch him in the face or kiss him, or maybe both.

The tension and danger is non-stop throughout the book. Liv coming to terms with what she learns, and trying to keep her team alive to prove her innocence! Then Liv and Kade working to identify the risk, and formulate plans in the middle of danger and fire that is acting outside the parameters of normal fire behavior! Liv struggles with trying to come to terms with something that is unbelievable and impossible! Plus she and Kade are trying to stay alive in the middle of firestorms and life-threatening situations!

A great read I could not put down…
Loving this series!
Can't wait for the next book!

I love the concept and plot, would love a longer book with more info

Liv has been to hell but, like a phoenix, she has 'risen from the ashes' & holds her head high in spite of being humiliated. Her coping mechanism is to internalise her emotions, particularly the guilt and to accept her demotion. Kade deliberately does't draw attention to himself although he is very aware of Liv, recognises her stress and other emotions and soon realises that Liv is in danger.

erratic fires 🔥 + gentle 🐉 + women who know their fire = entertaining read.

Flashover follows on from Ashfall, and while this one can be read as a standalone, I do think it is best to read Ashfall first as there is an underlying plot.

Honestly I would have given five stars but I felt as if there were gaps, for example, I felt as if there were aspects of Liv & Kade's characters & backgrounds where it was assumed the reader already knew. Nevertheless, it's a fun, fantasy, mystery read.

Unusual Fire Patterns
Blackstrike, the smokejumper unit of the dragonshifters, is aware that many fires are man-made and used to obscure other reasons. The flashover where all of Liv’s crew perished, caught their attention and when she is transferred to Arizona, Kade is sent to investigate. Where he is extremely impressed by and finds his mate in Liv. But her base and her rookies are being sabotaged and it looks like somebody does not want her to survive. Of course, he will make sure she does.
Again, the story unfortunately has some gaps. Also, I find it strange that they come together while chasing her old fiancé while he is driving a bomb into the village they mean to protect. And when they catch up with the vehicle, he has disappeared. Not very logical. A bit more to the story would have made a better book.

The only reason I don't give this 5 stars is because I think it jumps around too much and I sometimes feel like I've missed something. Also, they seem to have sex at completely inappropriate times, lol.

Liv is a wild fire firefighter. She gets caught in an unexpected flashover and is the only survivor. But was it really what it appeared to be? She gets the blame, because of course she does, and is demoted to a training position. Her fiancé was supposed to have been with her that day, but called off, then broke the engagement after the demotion. Not suspicious at all, right?

I won't try to tell you the story, as if I could. There is, of course, a dragon shifter. Another member of Blacksrike, Smokejumper Kade Veyron. He's assigned to Liv's location as a Safety Officer. This one gets complicated quickly, so be prepared. I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

I’ve been wanting to read a book by this author for a while. Flashover finally caught my attention, and I’m glad it did. I loved the mix of betrayal, secrets, and dragons. The way the dragon shifters shift and bond felt different and kept me hooked. The plot is solid, and the characters are well-developed and believable. I really enjoyed book two and plan to go back and read book one. This author is now on my go-to list for whenever I'm in a paranormal mood.

I think this book is perfect for readers who want dragon shifters with fresh lore, emotional tension, and betrayal with weight. Read this when you crave high-stakes romance, layered secrets, and slow-burning chemistry. Ideal for a quiet night when you're ready to escape into a world of power, magic, and hard-won bonds.

Kade and Liv’s story continues the Flashbound series in a powerful firestorm of heat and violence. She’s the disgraced firefighter and he’s the undercover dragon who needs to stop Ignis before they destroy half the US with fire. This storyline is full of Liv’s adversities , first with her fiancée Greer ( an Ignis operative ) , who dumps her after a fiasco he set in motion, then with falling for Kade during another fire site that Greer has also set to burn. The book gets bogged down with to much information about the science of fire fighting as well as sex during extremely dangerous times. I’m all for heart pounding sex, just not when your about to be burned to a cinder or are trying to keep the mountain your on from going up in smoke. I love the characters, so I’m giving this 4✨’s and can’t wait for book 3. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Wow, this was some fiery story! If you have any fascination with fires, firefighters, and/or dragons, this is the book for you. James certainly did her research about fire behavior and, with her vivid and detailed descriptions, brought Liv and Kane’s story to life.

Kade is a dragon shifter and part of Blackstrike, the firefighting dragon group introduced in the first book. His new role is to protect Liz, a wildfire firefighter in Arizona, who was set up to take the blame of a previous incident when the rest of her team did not survive a flashover. She has been demoted to training rookies and they ended up getting the best training possible. Their experiences with Liz are threaded throughout the story. Even though it was a side story, it was interesting to watch their growth and development as firefighters. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Liv, a firefighter, was set up by her fiancé to take the blame for a blaze gone wrong, she was the scapegoat the top brass blamed, and was promptly demoted, then dropped by her fiancé.
Kade admires her fire and is determined to protect her. Rumours, betrayal and secrets keep you turning the pages, along with intimate, meaningful sex scenes.
Liv and Kade have to trust and work together to stop a determined foe.
This is a suspenseful romance, although at times it does seem to drag on, it was a great read.
Liv finds trusting another very hard and Kade is determined to prove he is trustworthy, all while an evil band call Ignis, is plotting against the dragons but staying in the dark.
This is a complete romance but leaves with a little of the next story to come.

This book is as fast moving as an out of control wildfire. WOW. There is a lot packed into this book. I could just imagine the author hunched over her keyboard typing furiously trying to keep up to the story. This is a dragon shifter romance, but so much more as Kade and Liv race against time to stop eco-terrorists setting out of control wildfires every chance they get. This is story about redemption as well for Liv as she fights for her career and reputation. This a story about fated mates as Kade fights to keep Liv safe. Such a good story. There is a lot in this book to read and digest. This is a great second book to this series. While you can read it as a stand alone, I would strongly suggest that you read this first book in this series as it will give you a better context to the Wildfire Blackstrike Unit. Really good.

As much as I liked this story, there were in truth, parts that were over my head.

The fact that Liv had to endure so much trauma and scrutiny is mind blowing. I'm amazed at how strong of a character she is.

The story itself is undeniably toxic. We have sabotage and deception. But more than that, the lengths that someone would go through to cover their rear. How expendable life is. The cost seemed infinitely overwhelming.

The fact that one person was on Liv's side who helped carry the burden and who supported every move she made. The intoxicating power that revolved around them filled you with a deep sense of belonging. This was a beautiful heartfelt romance that ignited page after page. 🔥🔥💜

An amazing read that is a must 💜

I was surprised that Ember didn't get a mention though. I think that her and Live would've hit it off!

Another interesting fated mates paranormal shifter story.

Liv Monroe was the only one who walked away from a flashover that killed her crew. She was demoted and moved to the remote station to teach rookies.

But, danger has followed her. Her former fiancé Danny Greer is a member of a phantom group run by Ignis. He caused the flashover that killed her previous crew. She was supposed to die too, but managed to escape. He is determined that this time she will die.

Safety officer, Kade Veyron, is going to keep Liv safe. She is his fated mate. She does not know that Kade is a dragon shifter.

Together they must fight the horror trying to destroy them and all the crew.

This is the second dragon shifter book.

The second book in the series is just as edge of your seat suspense , if not more, than the first. I loved the interaction of Liv and Kade. The writing was excellent.

As with the first this can be read as a standalone with of course the perfect HEA for them. Spice to the eventual romance. Very good worldbuilding.

Loved the nicknames they gave each other. Especially since Liv did not know what Kade was before she called him Dragon man.

I loved Liv's grit, her defiance and not letting anything or anyone get in her way of finding the truth. Kade was always by her side protecting and giving her support.

Can't wait to see how Rafe solves his problem called Cami.

Flashover is the second book in the Firebound series and is an intense action packed rollercoaster ride. This one is a quick succinct paranormal read full of mystery, suspense, drama, villainous ex boyfriends, bureaucracy and romance. Kade and Liv work so well together it is as if they have always known each other. The team dynamic really comes into play is this book. When Liv is set up and demoted into a lesser position Kade has her back and she doesn't know if she can trust him. As they work together to stop the fires and destruction she saves him as often as he saves her. The chemistry is off the charts with this one. You will never look at fire the same way again after reading this well written book.

Fire is a living, breathing entity that you can’t really control… so get ready for the reading experience of a lifetime with Delta James’ book, FLASHOVER. Believe me—it deserves a lot more than 5 stars! So grab something cold to drink, a handful of tissues, and settle in for one helluva read. I couldn’t put it down… read it from cover to cover. It’s an incredible storyline, with some totally amazing characters; the plot twists and turns are really well done; and the HEA is pure magic with a heaping dose of wonderment. There’s just something about dragon shifters… I encourage you to grab this bad boy for your very own TBR shelf. (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and was totally mesmerized by it!) ❤️❤️🎁

Liv Monroe was lead trainer for firefighters taking her unit to fire that was unusual in the Bitterroot region of Montana, fire got the team, all except Liv… but she was set up by a phantom group which her fiancé Danny Greer was a member, going by the name Ignis. They were putting accelerants in the mix used to fight fires, wanting to use fires to steal arms from convoys… but dragon-shifter Kade Veyron dropped in on her after Liv basically demoted to training newbies in Arizona, using cover as "safety officer"… Kade believing that Liv was set up to take fall… and more importantly, that she is his fated mate… but you will need to read this compelling firefighting story to see what happens… I voluntarily read this book through an Advanced Reader Copy.

This is the 2nd book in the FIREBOUND series by Delta James and it focuses on the Blackstrike Unit, (smoke-jumping, dragon shifters), and this is Kade Veyron (dragon shifter) and Liv Monroe (fire fighter/fated mate) story. They meet when he is observing her demotion and watching the steel backbone she forges! Their chemistry nearly burns the pages in its intensity. Their story is a story of secrets, betrayal, vengeance and of absolute control! So sit back and read how these two mates forge their lives together all the while saving their co-workers!

A detailed and fast paced novel. Literally a riot of descriptive writing that paints a maelstrom of fear, an inferno that you can almost see and smell as well as steadfast perseverance. Liv gets to be made the scapegoat after her team was lost and demoted. Kade, a dragon from Blackstrike is send to protect her. She's determined to rise from the ashes and proof them wrong. The attraction between them is as explosive as the wild fires. Can she rise from outcast to hero? This edition drips of suspense and action. The technical details speak of research well done.
