So, let’s take stock.

I rebuilt the district. Made enemies disappear. Gained allies. Put the Shadow Clan back on the map.

By now, I should’ve earned a break. Naturally, that’s when the real trouble starts.

Some people preferred us powerless—silent, broken, easy to control. Now Marcus the Paladin is back in their way, and they’re done playing fair.

The next wave of enemies doesn’t want war. They want erasure.

But if they think I’m going quietly, they haven’t been paying attention. Let’s see who steps up next — and how far they’re willing to fall.

The Last Paladin #4 by Roman Savarovsky

Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)

Book four is very much a consolidation-and-escalation installment. Marcus has rebuilt his district, restored the Shadow Clan’s reputation, and forced his enemies into retreat. Naturally, that’s when the real predators decide to move—and this time they aren’t looking for leverage. They’re aiming for erasure.

If you’ve enjoyed the series so far, this entry keeps the momentum alive. If you’re hoping for massive, unforgettable duels and explosive climaxes, this one plays a longer strategic game.

What Works Well

Marcus remains the main draw. He’s brilliant, calculating, and perpetually three steps ahead—yet irreverent enough to turn ambushes into punchlines. Watching him convert setbacks into advantages is still the core pleasure of the series.

Sharp, cinematic action. The fight scenes are clean and visual, with Marcus’s tactical creativity—especially alongside Beaky and Cat—adding flair to every confrontation.

Political escalation. The conflict shifts from territorial skirmishes to systemic resistance. Success has made Marcus visible, and now entrenched powers want the Shadow Clan erased rather than negotiated with.

Tighter editing. The prose feels cleaner and more polished than earlier installments, which helps the pacing overall.

Where It Falters

A transitional feel. This is clearly a bridge book. It advances the overarching plot but offers fewer standout duels or dramatic set pieces.

Limited world depth. Four books in, the broader setting can still feel somewhat thin, with moments that fade out just when deeper immersion might have elevated the story.

More focus on side characters. Secondary players take on larger roles. While this expands the board, it occasionally slows the pacing and makes Marcus’s preparedness feel almost too convenient.

Divisive romantic threads. The romantic/sexual elements remain brief and mostly fade-to-black, but whether they enhance or distract will depend on your tolerance for that trope.

Pacing & Tone

The pacing is intentionally uneven at the start, with setup that can feel slightly disorienting before the story settles into its rhythm. Tonally, it remains quippy and energetic rather than grimdark. This is stylish urban fantasy with clan wars and magical familiars—not bleak nihilism.

Even when it feels transitional, it keeps that “just one more chapter” energy alive.

Final Verdict

Charismatic, hyper-competent protagonist
Tactical magical combat
Clan intrigue and political maneuvering
Fast, addictive pacing

This installment is enjoyable and engaging, but lighter on major payoffs. If you’re already invested in Marcus and the Shadow Clan, this will absolutely satisfy. If you’re looking for deeper worldbuilding or a fully self-contained arc with explosive resolution, you may find it slightly thinner than previous books.

Recommended for: Readers who enjoy strategic, overpowered protagonists, magical clan politics, and urban fantasy that prioritizes momentum over density.

Marcus is one of the most likable, engagingly brilliant characters ever. . .

One cannot help but be amused at his irrepressible need to counter the almost constant barrage of trouble and challenges, and cheer at every subsequent victory. I'm looking forward to discovering who or what he faces, tackles, and thwarts next in the upcoming book installments, all performed with unmatched skill, extraordinary tactical sense, and devastating flair.

Five stars seems rather inadequate -- this book was very well written, with far fewer errors than past publications and the usual amazing character and world crafting as well as wonderfully graphic action scenes. I particularly enjoyed the interactions and relationships Marcus has with his familiars. Well done!

Very good story. This book dragged a bit, or the transition plot.

The overall story just progressed with this book in the series. The main character and it's supporting cast round it out and the book was really transitional and just moving the plot along. However if you're read this far into the series, we either like the main character or not. for me I've enjoyed the what's going to happen next plot line even though overall you have a vague idea where the story is heading.
They were just enough fights to keep you interested but they could have been more, there wasn't as much suspense as this book was really more about the sub characters. Looking forward to book 5 just to keep the sun going!

Shallow, very lacking in depth, curtailed where everything is given short shrift. It just feels one dimensional.. a hollow façade only one exterior side painted and done up,.. but its like lipstick on a boar not even a sow. Four books in and the setting is still vague beyond belief.

This is very sad because it really has promise otherwise. Maybe if the author had taken his time here to flesh out the world and avoided skipping so much where its all just fade to black and done. That would have probably made for a satisfying 14hour book. Instead there is none of that and the story is even shallower than the previous 3 books in the series.

Truly like a 3.75.

Honestly, I’m really enjoying this book series. The only downside is enduring Marcus sleeping with every woman who lays eyes on him. I do realize this is marketed for men but sheesh, I could not be LESS interested in that.

I can’t complain too much because at least the scenes are quick and super vague, a nice face to black, and I’m so, so, SO happy I don’t have to endure such nonsense for long before we are back to the action, and monster slaying, and his hilarious shenanigans, and the spin the wheel mystery of Who is trying to kill Marcus today?

Which is what I’m here for let’s be honest. I just want to see him be BA. That’s it. Please and thank you.

Unfortunately, i found the book mostly boring as it had too much filler for my taste. The world building is still rudimentary which makes the world tiny and bland. In my opinion there should have been more duels and emphasis on the sabotage missions. The hotel scene was nice but very rudimentary. I would be more interested in the misadventures of Beaky and Cat than all those two dimensional side characters despicted in the book.

Criticism and comments

The title Boss is a terrible upgrade for a prince/ss.

I received a review copy of this book.
The Last Paladin book 4 starts out a bit confusing, but after a few chapters, it settles down, and becomes the seriously good read I was expecting. Not sure what's going on with the start of the book, but honestly, if that's the worst to worry about, then the story can't be that bad. :)
I liked this story, and am looking forward to the next one.

Dirty pool Mr Savorsky, but a good read

This series is fantastic. But...2 negative comments. 1) putting the first three in the library only to start charging $9 for each one afterwards... Not cool. 2) the first comment is compounded by the fact that each book is so thin.
If you feel like you have to bait people in and charge double the price of most other books in this genre, at least make the page count worth it.
Yeah, it doesn't really matter since I'll be buying the rest anyway, it's still not cool.

great series, wish it was covered under KU

Good series with fun characters, a worthwhile addition to the fantasy genre. Not quite Literpg as there is no system, but fun none the less.

The series is becoming a soap opera

Feel like a soap opera, minor characters in earlier books are suddenly very important people. The flow of the book feel erratic, jumping after the fact how he knew everything that's hidden around him, doesnt make a lot of sense

really good

These books are all really good. I’ll say that first. But, the price is steep for a 300+ page book. Make it a bigger book or drop the price please, bc I really like them but as much as I read I cannot justify to my wife the price/page ratio lol

Great series

This series is cleverly done with secrets shared in increments along the way while more are teased at following the revelations. The main character has a confidence backed up by accomplishments and a personality that is charming.

Excellent advance of the core narrative.

A little bit of politics and more solidification of the ’core’ group. I almost expected a lazy death in the final battle; for “dramatic license”, but Savarovsky opted for a cleaner approach and added mystique. Bravo!

not bad

This book needed a bit more meat. The writing was good and the pace was fast, but it need a bit more plot.

Full of action

Thoroughly enjoyable, full of action. There is plenty of dry humour and moves at a fast pace. Will not disappoint.

Terrific

Marcus just keeps on poking the bear and upsetting the "natural" order whilst making interesting new friends and strengthening bonds with old ones .

Darkness is the energy from which all things were born. Darkness can take any form. Darkness can become any state. Darkness can consume anything.

Still enjoying it.
