Curses Made and Broken
Curses. Fate. A love they were never meant to find.
Kiara was born a Curse Maker—marked by black eyes and dark magic in a world where eye color decides everything. On her twenty-first birthday, fate drags her to the City of Curses, a brutal realm ruled by the Cursed Lord, where survival demands surrender to the darkness within. But just as she begins to navigate the treacherous world she’s been forced into, an act of vengeance changes everything: Braxan, crown prince of the Curse Breakers, crosses enemy lines on a mission to strike back—and takes Kiara as his prisoner.
He took her to avenge his brother, but Kiara is nothing like he expected—sharp-tongued, defiant, and far too human. The more time they spend together, the more she begins to unravel everything he’s been taught to hate.
As the Cursed Lord’s twisted plans unfold, Kiara and Braxan are forced into a fragile alliance, bound by a shared goal—and an undeniable spark. With war looming and betrayal around every corner, they must each decide: stay loyal to the worlds that raised them… or risk everything for the one who could break them.

This book that doesn't just enchant—it consumes. From the moment you step into into this world, you're swept into a dance of danger, mystery, and magic that refuses to let go.
And let's talk about MFC because wow. She is fierce, flawed, and utterly magnetic. She’s not the kind of heroine who stumbles into power—she hates it, and sometimes breaks under the weight of it. That vulnerability made her real even though she is incredibly powerful. And the MMC is equally compelling—layered, brooding without being cliché, and with a depth that slowly reveals itself.
Vengeance and a high-stakes kidnapping, spiraling through forbidden desire, and finally becoming something dangerously tender. Where trust is bartered, not given, and love feels like both a curse and a cure.
Throughout the book I LOVED the witty banter with the main and side characters the kind that makes you smirk one second and clutch your chest the next.
I feel like the magic system was a living, breathing system of curses and counter-curses. Magic here is messy, costly, and morally tangled. It’s not just power—it’s responsibility, legacy, and pain. The way magic breaks and remakes people is at the heart of the book.
This was a fully immersive experience. Showing just enough to let your imagination run wild, while grounding you in politics, history, and myth that feel as real as your own past.
And the pacing—blistering. Not in a “nonstop chaos” kind of way, but in a “can’t stop turning the pages" way. There are no slow parts—just quiet moments that build tension and explosive scenes that hit hard.
Parts of the ending absolutely didnt see coming which I love and just the ending in general was pefection.
By the time I finished, I didn’t want more—I needed more. This isn’t just a book—it’s a curse of its own. One I’d gladly brek and remake a thousand times.

I don’t know what was in this book but I couldn’t put it down! It consumed me. I loved every second of this book.
This is what I mean when I say I want enemies to lovers. True enemies to lovers. Not slightly just annoy each other enemies but hate so deep it’s burned into your soul enemies. Eternal loathing. And then the love that blossoms is even sweeter.
Everything about this books is amazing. The banter, the plot, the magic system (eye color? Um yes please!) and even the twists. You won’t have a dull moment and you’ll be swept away the entire time.
I will absolutely be telling everyone to read this! And I can’t wait for the next one! Thank you so much Vanessa Fischer for letting me read and review your book! I can’t wait to see where the story goes!

I really enjoyed my ARC copy of this book! This was the first book I read by Vanessa and I hope to read more.
The first 20% started off a little rough for me personally. It felt a little rushed with not a ton of world building and I'm still left with a few questions. But! You do get a decent background on the FMC a bit later in the book.
After that things really started to get interesting and the enemies to lovers kicked into overdrive! I was eating the words like candy. I was all about the light magic and dark magic coming together and blending.
The last little bit also felt a bit rushed. However, things came together in a perfect HEA and who can complain about that!

@author_vanessafischer has worked her magic and created a truly captivating dark fantasy. A world of 7 realms and where eye color decides your fate.
You will not find a dull moment. The pace is fast and the banter/tension is tantalizing and delicious. I could not devour this book fast enough.
Kiara finds herself newly 21, thrust into the dark, cursed realm, and The Cursed Lord’s chosen. After a lifetime of being shunned and hating her magic Kiara welcomes the attention and promise of power. A night of celebration ends with Kiara kidnapped by the Prince of the Curse Breakers. Secrets are revealed. Truces are formed.
Is Kiara destined to live the life as curse marker or perhaps she’s destined to rewrite fate…
Thank you for the wonderful opportunity @author_vanessafischer to participate in your ARC read!

“They created. I destroyed. They gave life, and I offered nothing but death.”
Kiara has spent her entire life as an outcast. Even her own parents tried to “fix”. Just because she was born with black, soulless eyes. On her 21st birthday she’s sent to the City of Curses. There, she is to wed & train her powers, until she is kidnapped for revenge in the middle of the night.
This book is a standalone dark fantasy and it packs a punch from start to finish! Kiara… I feel for her so much. To grow up your entire life not feeling love, having no friends etc it’s sadly something I could relate to. Chapter 42 BROKE MY HEART! I am still not over it Vanessa… 🤭
When Vanessa reached out and asked if I wanted to read, I was a little worried (only because I have so many arcs) but I’m so glad I said yes because I REALLY enjoyed this book!
I enjoyed the magic system. The light vs shadows was really cool. And I loved the characters. Yes, even Drazhan 🤭 and I did love Chiros but why???
I really loved the world building. Like, the descriptions left nothing to the imagination and I was able to clearly picture everything that was described. I love when an author does this well!
Although this is a standalone and has a HEA, I also think there would be room to write a sequel in the future? Maybe Brekkin goes corrupt and only Kiara can stop him ;) hint hint! Haha.
Curses Made & Broken is out on June 12th and I HIGHLY recommend you read it 🥰
Thank you so much for reaching out and asking me if I’d like to read. It meant a lot!

Unpredictable and a REAL enemies to lovers, literally born to be enemies.✨️
A book I highly recommend especially if you're experiencing a reading slump!
Firstly I'd like to say... WOW, I completely fell in love with this book and the world, from the dark realm to the bright gold gorgeous one that we get taken to with Kiara. This book was so immersive, the world building was done just right for me personally and the character development was done so well, I really felt like I was apart of this book and the world with the characters. Absolutely, amazing.
I loved how we went from the MMC literally wanting to END the FMC to all the playful moments between our two main characters, Braxan and Kiara.
"You want a man that's just as likely to kill you as he is to kiss you?" 👀
(And I will leave it at that because what comes next is even BETTER and YOU should read it! I don't want to spoil it)
I found this story to be unpredictable which in my opinion is the best kind of books and not to mention all the emotions I felt. I was angry, my jaw dropped (The SLAP!) that's all I will say😅 I laughed and at one point I even had tears in my eyes🥹. I took my time reading it and soaked it all uppppp. Boyyy this Romantasy was soooo good.

"Because sometimes the things we can't have are the things we need the most. Because maybe the things meant to destroy us are the only things that can make us whole."
This was such a great book that I couldn't put it down! I loved everything about it! The world building, the magic, the light vs dark, good vs evil, and especially the slow burn, forbidden romance and enemies to lovers was amazing! I also loved that the magic system was based on eye colour!
I absolutely fell in love with the main character Kiara and her journey of finding and accepting herself and her powers. It was really great seeing her character develop throughout the story.
The romance between the main characters was so good! The tension was to die for and the banter was amazing!!! The enemies to lovers in this book was perfect! It's so hard nowadays to find a book that does this properly but I feel like the author did an amazing job!
I definitely recommend this book if you love a standalone book with a unique magic system, forbidden romance, slow burn, enemies to lovers and endless banter!

“Do you think we’ll end up destroying each other?”
Do you think you’ll end up destroying me with this book? Yes. This story hit all the right notes. The pace picks up after the first few chapters. It’s a mystical, mysterious fantasy world. I loved the character growth, and let’s be real, a dark cursed lord invites you to join him, we’re all probably jumping there first.
Kiara has a lot of realistic emotions, she’s not just some 21 year old girl with this amazing power and an instant warrior. Her growth throughout the book shows she’s willing to accept herself but also to bring change to the curse breakers and curse makers.
There’s a chapter where your whole perspective on the book changes. Nothing is as it seems. You can see why Kiara isn’t so quick to trust people. Being branded as the darkness and a witch your entire life, learning to trust people, learning to NOT trust people. Her guard is up.
The tension, banter and world building was epic.
Tropes:
Enemies to lovers
Slow burn
Forbidden love
Magic
Darkness vs Light

I really enjoyed this book—it was my first read by this author, and it definitely won’t be my last! It features one of my all-time favorite tropes: enemies to lovers (yes, please!). I would love to read another book with even more backstory or a deeper dive into the characters. Fingers crossed the author gives us more!

See the real me, the girl, not the black eyes
Kiara is at first unsure, scared and so very lonely and unprepared as she has to
stumble her way through the city of curses. All she's ever known was city of earth. When the colours of your eyes dictate your future and who you are, you don't much of a choice.
Going this journey with Kiara, how she has to learn to play the game with the curse lord and try
not to fall for his lure of charm and seduction but most of all to gain power. Getting captured by
the prince of curse breakers , revealing truths of deep routed truth and guilt.
To fall in love with the impossible but want it to be possible no matter what the cost.
Truces, heart Wrenching moments, Having to embrace who you are to be what your meant
to be. She grows into a sassy, know what she wants and grabs onto her own destiny
to rewrite the narrative of her own story and future of who she wants to be with.
Fates be damned. It's her and Braxan story.
author vanessa fischer thanks you so much for the opportunity to read your curses made and broken 💔. You put me through the ringer.
What in the seven realms did you do to my heart. I've fallen in love with Kiara and Braxan story and they literally fought through hell and near death for the outcome. I was so on edge it was captivating.
The world building itself was so freaking immersive that you could imagine the black obsidian buildings and the wild dark Forrest or the golden buildings it was truly incredible.
Braxan my broody MMC, truly gutted for him, I wept tears with him and everything he ever knew and loved. Loss , Grief and deep sadness changes a person but I think having Kiara gave him that Haven that he always needed for then to TRULY see one another. With what the cursed lord made her do. It's a game of survival.
I adored the moments will they could just breath and let their defenses down to learn whom they were together.
Enemies to lovers
Magic based on eye colour
Forbidden love
Light Vs Dark
Torn Loyalties
Secrets and betrayals
Touch her and you freaking die
Forced Proximity
Morally grey men
He falls first

Curses Made and Broken by Vanessa Fischer
"Because sometimes the things we can't have are the things we need the most. Because maybe the things meant to destroy us are the only things that can make us whole."
What to expect:
✨Enemies to lovers
🖤Forbidden love
✨Unique magic system
🖤Light vs Dark
✨Forced Proximity
🖤Slow Burn
If you're a fan of TRUE enemies-to-lovers dynamics—like, "they might actually kill each other before they kiss" levels of tension—this book delivers BIG TIME. The tension and chemistry between the main characters is electric, unpredictable, and deeply satisfying. I spent half the time wondering if someone was about to draw a blade instead of catch feelings, and I enjoyed every second of it.
The world-building is refreshingly unique, with a magic system that feels original without being overly complicated. It’s rich enough to be immersive, but clear enough that you’re never lost—perfect for readers who want depth without needing a map and glossary at every turn. The magic system was super unique and I loved that their powers were based on their eye colors!
The pacing is fast and fluid, keeping the momentum strong from page one. It’s easy to follow, but never simplistic. That balance between action and character development is where this book really shines.
Kiara, our fierce and flawed FMC, is as relatable as they come. She’s magnetic—vulnerable yet resilient, strong but still real. You root for her not because she’s perfect, but because she fights like hell even when she’s breaking. And Braxon? Classic brooding, grouchy MMC energy, that you can't help but fall for. His emotional arc is just as compelling, and the way he and Kiara push and pull each other is absolute perfection.
All in all, if you love fantasy with heart, high stakes, slow-burn tension, and characters that feel alive, I definitely recommend this book!
A huge thank you to Vanessa for this ARC and the opportunity to read her book! It is live now on Amazon, go check it out and support this awesome author!

Curses Made and Broken • Vanessa Fischer
This was my second ever ARC and I’m so grateful to Vanessa for reaching out to me — what a ride! Curses Made and Broken dives into a magical world full of curses, conflict, and second chances. The enemies-to-lovers dynamic adds a fun tension (with no spice, just one soft, closed-door scene), and the magic system had some super interesting layers that I would’ve loved to explore even more.
Our FMC Kiara is a tragic heroine — I wanted to wrap her in a blanket and tell her everything was going to be okay. While I hoped for a bit more depth in her arc, she still had a presence that tugged at my heartstrings.
The romance between Kiara and our MMC was definitely a highlight — soft, sweet, and very much that classic “fighting your brain with your heart” kind of dynamic. Watching their walls come down and their feelings bubble up was adorable. He had those quiet, steady love interest vibes that made me root for them, even when they were at odds. It felt sincere, even if a little angsty at times — perfect for a YA love story.
This one definitely leans YA fantasy, and while I usually gravitate toward slightly older or more mature reads, I can totally see younger readers getting swept up in this story! I also think it would really resonate with anyone just stepping into the fantasy genre 🪄💖
If you’re in the mood for an emotional journey with magic, found strength, and healing, this one might just surprise you. Vanessa has such a unique voice — I’ll be keeping an eye out for her future work! 💫

Curses Made and Broken is a well crafted fantasy filled with moral battles, impossible choices, prejudice and redemption.
The world building is unique, the characters are relateable, and the magic system is really damn cool. This isn't just power, this is ethically tangled magic causing conflict and discrimination.
Kiara is born a Curse Maker with black, soulless eyes. In a world where eye colour determines your magic, this condems her to growing up ostracised, friendless and alone. Even her parents have struggled to accept who she is. At 21 years old she is sent to the City of Curses, a kill or be killed realm where she needs to embrace her inner darkness to survive.
Kiara is flawed and vulnerable, someone who speaks first and thinks later. I enjoyed the touches of humour in her inner monologue and her spark and heart.
Braxan carries so much anger and grief - I thought Vanessa developed his character nicely, giving a hint of a smile here, a touch of playfulness there, as he gets to know the real Kiara.
The enemies to lovers is done well, weaved with conflicting moral principles, the main characters evolving from literally trying to kill each other, to a friendship built on teasing and tentative trust.
If you love:
✨️Enemies to lovers
✨️Forbidden love
✨️Moral conflict
✨️Torn loyalties
✨️Unique magic systems
This may just be the book for you!
For me, this was fast paced, easy reading. Being a standalone, this would a great book to read in between series.

In a world where the realms are at war and the colour of your eyes determines your fate, would you embrace it or defy it?

Our FMC is newly turned 21 and with eyes the colour of obsidian she is thrust into the realm of the cursed to become what she was born - a curse maker. A sworn enemy to the curse breakers.

She’s spent her whole life fearing her power and being shunned by her realm. So what happens when you embrace the darkness and do what you must to survive? 🖤

If you are looking for a unique fantasy with TRUE enemies to lovers, this is for you! This world was so uniquely built. I could NOT put it down! The beginning has you questioning who the true MMC is, but once you meet him, you are ALL for him!
We meet Kiara as a fresh 21 year old who gets tossed into a world she knows nothing about. She’s scared, lonely and so unsure of who she is. As the story builds, you see who she truly is and how maybe, she isn’t where she is meant to be after all. Her growth through out is *chefs kiss
Of course the MMC steps in and *bam, enemies. Which you can’t blame him. But as the story progresses, you see the truth of them both unfold.
This is such a beautiful, creative and unique story. There is betrayal, enemies, lovers, magic and deception. This book has it all. Incredibly thankful to have had the opportunity to read this!

This book really hooked me in. The writing was so easy to read and the story kept me on my toes from start to finish. The magic system was incredible, unique while still being simple to understand.
I loved the imagery of the realms. Let’s be honest I am made for the Curse Markers’ realm. My gothic romance heart just swooned at the dresses and the dark obsidian castle, I loved it.
When I say this is enemies to lovers I really mean it. The hate and rivalry between the two main characters is perfect.
𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐬 (𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞):
Kiara is from a world where your eye colour determines what magic you are born with and what realm you are to live in once you turn 21. Born with the deepest of black eyes, Kiara has moved to the Curse Makers realm. A dark place where only the brutal survive. She soon discovers she has immense power, but will she use it for good or evil?
𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬:
🖤 enemies to lovers (like reaaaaly enemies)
🖤 light vs dark magic
🖤 forced proximity
🖤closed door spice but oh so much angst

a TRUE enemies to lovers trope!
such a fun easy read & it’s a stand-alone!
at 21, you’re destined to travel to the land of your eye color. FMC is born with black eyes which makes her a curse maker. in this world, people with gold eyes - curse breakers, are their natural born enemies!
FMC is forced to kill a curse breaker. & with her luck, it happens to be the [MMC] PRINCE of curse breakers BROTHER!! who happens to steal her away & make her, her prisoner.
MMC legit tries & ALMOST succeeds in killing her MULTIPLE times!!!
TRUEEEEE enemies to lovers trope!!
i couldn’t put this book down. i love the dual POV. i enjoyed seeing the relationship change & grow. & the mini banters between FMC & MMC.

First of all, I’m incredibly grateful for the chance to receive this book early—and even more grateful that it turned out to be such a refreshing and thrilling read. As someone who’s completely obsessed with fantasy, I’ve started to notice how many stories fall into the same patterns. But this one? It surprised me in the best way. The worldbuilding was vivid, the plot kept me curious the whole time, and the characters felt real and layered. It reminded me why I fell in love with fantasy in the first place. Such a pleasure to read💗

I’m grateful to have received an ARC of Curses Broken and Made!
The book features an intriguing magic system, and I found Kiara’s loneliness and fear made her both trusting and vulnerable. As the story progresses, she grows braver and more determined. You can also really feel the MMC’s struggle not to fall in love with her.
If you’re looking for a fantasy book that’s romantic, slightly dark, and easy to read, this one is for you. It’s fast-paced and a true enemies-to-lovers story. I enjoyed the twists and turns and am quite satisfied with how things concluded.

Great read, unique world building, and so action-packed. It kept me on my toes the whole time. This a stand-alone fantasy, with some mild spice (mostly kissing and some nudity). I think it would be best suited for peobably aged 12+.
The story is super straightforward (dark vs. light, that sort of thing) and somehow still managed to manifest a unique tone, and there were some surprises along the way, too. this author is one to keep an eye on!

This was such a fun standalone read!
Step into this dark fantasy, where your magic (and your enemies) is based on the colour of your eyes.
Leaving behind everything you have ever known to take your place in the most feared of the seven realms seems like a pretty rough way to spend your twenty-first birthday! This is just the first of many challenges Kiara faces on her journey, one that is filled with secrets, betrayal, forbidden romance, and impossible choices. But don't worry, there is a HEA at the end! Author Vanessa Fischer enjoys making you stress a little (lot) before we get there.
With a sprinkle of all of the tropes we love best, you'll race through Kiara's story in no time!
