A thoughtful, captivating and ultimately uplifting novel from this uniquely talented author

Jasmine know two things: one, she loves her vulnerable sister unconditionally, and will fight to the death to protect her from anyone who upsets her. Two, she's only ever been good at one thing – her job helping business start-ups.

Insomnia keeps her staring out of her bedroom window, and she finds herself watching the antics of her neighbour, shock jock Matt, with more than a casual eye. The Year I Met You is a standalone, women's fiction novel written by Cecelia Ahern. My reading pace during this book was slow and steady, partly due to time management but mostly due to wanting the experience to last as long as possible. I adored this book! It's insightful and unpredictable. It's funny, relatable, and emotional. It goes outside the norm in terms of writing style and story development, and I loved it!

So many types of relationships are featured in this story and the lead character Jasmine serves many different roles: a lonely daughter, a parentified sibling, an underappreciated business partner, an involved neighbor, and a lost soul. During one particular year in her life, Jasmine's circumstances force her to slow down - way down - and by doing so, she learns how to be whole again. Jasmine wholeheartedly deserves all the credit for her transformation, but one particular person unknowingly (and sometimes knowingly) plays a significant part. He's a mirror that reflects truths that are difficult to accept...and Jasmine repays the favor. Don't we all need someone like that in our lives? Someone to keep us on our toes but also gently guide us back to where we need to be?

In summary, Ms. Ahern creates continuously evolving characters and one remarkable friendship. One week later, I'm still smiling. Please give this book a try.

My favorite quote:
"I always thought that being helped was a loss of control, but you must allow someone to help you, you must want someone to help you, and only then can the act begin."

I have read all of Cecilia's books and some have be a bit hit or miss, some a bit quirky. This was disappointing to be honest,a good read but I kept waiting for something meaningful or exciting to happen and it just didn't. I loved the character of Matt and Jasmines sister Heather but I just couldn't warm to her supposed love interest Monday. A lot of her books I find insightful and reflective but this just didn't do it for me sadly.

“I feel now like I'm living in a goldfish bowl and all I can see and hear from every window in my home is you. You, you, you.”
----Cecelia Ahern

Cecelia Ahern, the Irish best-selling author, has crafted yet another poignant love story, The Year I Met You and I think this book will be your perfect book companion to end/begin a year.

Synopsis:
Jasmine know two things: one, she loves her vulnerable sister unconditionally, and will fight to the death to protect her from anyone who upsets her. Two, she's only ever been good at one thing – her job helping business start-ups.

So when she’s sacked and put on gardening leave, Jasmine realizes that she has nothing else to fill her life. Insomnia keeps her staring out of her bedroom window, and she finds herself watching the antics of her neighbor, shock jock Matt, with more than a casual eye. Matt is also taking a forced leave of absence from work, after one of his controversial chat shows went too far…

Jasmine has every reason to dislike Matt, and the feeling appears to be mutual. But not everything is as it seems, and soon Jasmine and Matt are forced to think again…

Welcome to Jasmine and Matt's imperfect worlds. Jasmine, recently fired, guarding to her wild sister, has never know anything beside her job. So things go haywire when she is forced to have a gardening leave- meaning no job for a year. Matt is the neighbor of Jasmine who is a radio DJ and Jasmine and Matt couldn't stand each other due to Matt's insensitive comment on people with Down's syndrome ages ago. Matt too is on a leave from his job and is finding hard to take care of himself. Eventually a friendship evolves between Matt and Jasmine mainly because of their sad situations. And the author keeps them as friends as long as I can remember until Jasmine falls head over heels in love with Monday! Will Matt be jealous? Will their friendship hit a dead-end on Monday's arrival in Jasmine's life? Read the book to get the rest of the scoop.

Yes, I've read P.S.I Love You ages ago and honestly, I fell in love with the way Ahern writes her stories- gripping from the very first moment. And in The Year I Met You, Matt and Jasmine's friendship will keep you on the loop. Ahern keeps us anticipating till the very end, whether Jasmine and Matt will become more-than-just-friends. The feeling of breathlessness is evident from the way the author unfolded her love-story.

The author's lyrical and eloquent prose will only melt your heart and you'll find losing yourself in their charm of the story. The atmosphere that she created for an eager job-looker is striking, I mean I can relate to each and every situation of being how-you-work-your-ass-off but still you're an under-payed employee of a company. Moreover, Jasmine is a motherly character who cares way too much for her younger sister, and their bond, that the author portrayed in the book, is something to cherish for.

The charterers are all very mature and improvising through out the book. Especially, Jasmine- in the beginning we see her as someone who knows nothing except her precious job and her precious sister, but then life cuts her a bit of slack, and eventually she takes a leap and learns to live a little for herself. Matt, whose inner demons make him a character to hate for or feel sorry for, eventually evolves into someone who you want to adore. The supporting characters are equally strong and striking.

The story is nothing too glamorous or something to die for- a normal regular story and the situations mentioned in the book can happen to almost anyone, but the way Ahern wrote it that it turns out to be something really enchanting. Well, the story doesn't give us a brand new perspective to look at things, instead, you can be able to sympathize with the characters or with the plot. The chemistry between certain characters are strongly and compassionately depicted, which leads me to my next point- the emotional content in this book is vivid and rich, so while reading you can feel the pain from the pages of the book.

Well my money did not go to waste on buying this book. I really loved the narration and how the author manages to keep us on our toes with Jasmine and Matt's "just friends" situation. Yes, definitely grab a copy of the book, and I think it's far better than P.S. I Love You .

Verdict: A must read for all the contemporary romance lovers! And other genre lovers, please read it, since there is no whirl-wind romance or cheesy romantic dates to make you feel bad about it.

I received an advance reading copy of this title in return for an honest review......

Jasmine and Matt live opposite each other in a small Dublin cul-de-sac, but have never spoken. They lead very different lives and neither have any interest in being part of the neighbourhood watch scheme, chats across driveways or even bothering to wave as they pass by each day. They have their own agendas and being pals with neighbours is definitely not part of what this entails.
One New Years Eve, their paths cross, despite the odds, and suddenly their agendas have altered. Both have inner demons, and both have fiery tempers. Family issues are also a common thread but in very different ways. Jasmine had to take on responsibilities at a young age, where Matt struggles to look after himself, never mind his family. The two rivals become reluctant allies as they struggle to adjust to their new roles in this new year.

There is no need to fill you in on Cecilia Ahern's resume, as she is one of the best known, and best selling, female fiction authors of our time. This is her 11th novel and, dare I say it, maybe her best?
The story is simple. Two people, two struggles with identity and lots of family drama. So far, so normal. The only thing is, the author has such a way with words that from page one I was hooked, on that suburban road, with twitching curtains and well kept lawns. The book is divided over the period of a year, in seasons, starting with Winter. The reader is introduced to Jasmine, recently fired and now wide awake at all hours of the night. Matt rolls home drunk most evenings and is unaware he is watched by his neighbour regularly. He unravels in front of her, as she she herself tries to deal with her own troubles. She knows him, as does most of the country, due to his public role, and she has a grudge which makes her like him even less. This is where I expected the book to get predictably romantic and gushy. It didn't. Friendship and support is what this book is about, not love. Where other female writers may have taken the reader on the journey of dinner dates, champagne and wonderful love-making scenes, Cecilia Ahern uses her talent to tell us stories of nature, solidarity and change. True, money does not play a part in either Matt or Jasmine's new lives of leisure, and this rarely is the case, but on the other hand, money is not the issue here. Trust in a person cannot be bought, and honesty can sometimes be cruel but is usually the best policy.

There are wonderful descriptions of garden life throughout this novel and these are cleverly balanced with harsh realities like dependency on alcohol, the need for reassurance and the day to day living with disability. Jasmine's sister, Heather, has Down's Syndrome and the author has researched her extremely well , giving us a glimpse of her yearning for independence yet showing the fears her family will always have for her well-being.
I really enjoyed the supporting characters, mainly neighbours and even pictured Mr Malone reading to his wife in their garden, bringing a little lump to my throat. The retired GP who lives in the cul-de-sac was also great and his voice and posture seemed to come alive.

I genuinely loved this book. A great look at how we should not presume we know everything about people we know, or think we know and a great reminder that we should never judge a book by its cover ( or in this case, genre ).

This has been a great read and one of the main themes was change . I found it relatively easy to read, the story starts out slow as it goes with most books. I initially thought it would be a love story, but it turned out to be more than that. It was the story of how a woman, Jasmine, found courage and the belief to let go her previous self, in order to shine in a whole new way.

It was the story of second chances, finding the good in every dirt flung towards us, and believing the beauty in people we thought was horrible. It was a beautiful story about an unlikely friendship and how we may have more in common with people we thought we'd never get along.

This book wasn't exactly breathtaking or unique in any special way. But it was beautiful for it's relatable stories and how these things do happen in every day life. Hence, it's a recommended read by me.

I have over 200 books on my kindle and out of them all it's bizarre that I picked this one up, my first week of unemployment to meet Jasmine, who has also just lost her job.

I could relate to everything she feels about having no job, no purpose. I can see why she was so drawn to her neighbours antics and how she describes stillness blew me away.

I found this very easy to read, relevant and an extremely cute read.

Five stars.

I tried my best to finish this book but I just couldn’t get through the whole thing. I even put it down for a couple of days and tried finishing it after taking a break from it but despite being only 85 pages away from the end, I just know that I don’t want to force myself to finish it. It would just make me unhappy and I don’t need that right now.

“The Year I Met You” was such a boring book, I literally have nothing positive to say about its plot. I was always waiting for something big to happen that would “save” the story but I highly doubt I’m missing something amazing by dnf-ing the book right now. I also didn’t like the POV this was written in. In my opinion, it was extremely weird that the neighbor was talked about as “you”, so while reading the book I constantly felt like I was the neighbor which really isn’t someone I wanted to be. Furthermore, it made me think the neighbor would have an interesting part that would add to the story but he was literally just the neighbor from across the street and in my opinion, didn’t make the story any better.

The only positive thing I can say about this book is that I liked Cecelia Ahern’s writing style and even though the whole plot was horrible (or nonexistent), it was still well written. I’ve also heard great things about some of her other books which is why I definitely will check out some of them despite disliking this book.

In recent years I've realized that Cecelia Ahern has slowly started to move away from the fantastical into more ordinary contemporary novels. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it does make me miss her old work, what with an angel/homeless man showing another man the right path (The Gift), to an exciting place where all lost things go (No Place like Here), to Life paying you a visit (Time of My Life), to falling in love with an invisible friend (If You Could See Me Now), Cecelia Ahern has inspired us time and again with the breadth of her imagination.

I fell in love with each and every one of those books.

The Year I Met you seemed like the perfect book to end the year with. In fact it was the last book I read in 2014, and I finished it within a few hours of starting it. It was utterly enjoyable, albeit ordinary (in Ahern standards), but I loved the moral of the story. I loved the message that it tried to convey, and I loved that it was written in a way where the protagonist, Jasmine, is speaking directly to Matt, a radio DJ who has his own talk show and is quite famous in Dublin. Jasmine however despises him due to one of his sessions from many years ago where he seemed to undermine people suffering from Down Syndrome, her older sister being one of them.

He happens to be her neighbour, and seems to be suffering from wild drunken nights and family problems. Jasmine herself has hit rock bottom when she loses her job and is on gardening leave (meaning she is not allowed to find another job for another year), which drives her absolutely insane and leads her to some actual, literal gardening.

When Matt's wife walks out on him, he finds solace in Jasmine's company, even though they spend most of their time bickering and biting each other's heads off. They form a friendship that surprises them, and it surprises me as well. Because this friendship goes absolutely nowhere as they simply remain very good friends, and nothing else.

The reason I'm surprised is because reading fiction, chick-lit, contemporary novels - whatever you want to call them - with two protagonists, you simply expect them to end up together. Especially when two people start out hating each other as much as Jasmine and Matt did. And especially when Jasmine is writing the whole story TO Matt. I mean, I was reading it and with every page I turned I was waiting for something to happen. Then Monday shows up. Yes, Monday's his name. He takes her breath away, and I'm a little confused, but I think, of course, a little jealousy, a little rivalry will push Matt to take that step needed for them to get out of the friend zone. Surprisingly, that does not happen. They remain very good, supportive friends, who try to work on their problems and help each other out.

And I liked that. I liked that Cecelia toyed with our expectations and changed it up from the overly ordinary, and into something with a little more Ahern in it.

It's a really good story. Nothing extraordinary about it, but that doesn't mean it's not a good read. I enjoyed it.

Me encanto!!

A poslije? Posebno jednog susjeda, omraženog joj radijskog voditelja i DJ-a, Matta Marshalla.

Naravno, bez ljubavi ne ide, no ona ovog puta nije cilj, a nije ni sredstvo.

Mnogi će ovoj priči zamjeriti dozu ustajalosti, mirnoće i vrlo polaganog, pravocrtnog tijeka. Nema tu velikih događaja niti neočekivanih obrata, zapleta i grandioznog finala.

“I feel now like I'm living in a goldfish bowl and all I can see and hear from every window in my home is you. You, you, you.”

This was my third Cecelia Ahern book, and it started out on shaking legs. Jasmine was full of rage for having lost her job - her job that comprised her life. What do you do when your life is taken away from you?
You spiral down into dark thoughts and you stalk your neighbor who you hate and whose family is threatening to fall apart. You do this in the dark when your neighbor can't see you lurking behind your curtains, witnessing his drunk state and his shoutings.

I wasn't delighted by the fact that the neighbor (Matt Marshall) was referred to as "You" in the book, at first it was confusing at times but after a couple of chapters I got used to it and it ceased to bother me. But the story was boring. Nothing happened, Jasmine would only sit at home pitying herself and stalking Matt - what's the fun in that? She pondered her life and everything that had led her to become this closed off woman that sought affection in her work. She didn't know anyone living on her street or had even cared up until now, when she was forced to interact with them. And it was somewhere along Jasmine's dayly train of thoughts that I began to realize that I could connect to what she was feeling (despite being 13 years younger than her), and from then on the story transformed from boring to entrancing.
I would laugh at her thoughts as they each day went from being utterly dark to something lighter and Jasmine found light in her life. She suddenly became friends with her neighbors, including "You" (who helped her so much, at the same time that Jasmine helped him) and she even met someone.

I'm aware of this review not making sense, but that's because the book didn't even when I read it. It was so much like real life that it felt like I was reading about an actual person who was sharing her life story with me. And that's what I love about Ahern's books; they make it seem so real. In the end I loved this book, not as much as How to Fall in Love but I still loved it.
It explored life and how to find one's way back from the relentless darkness that feels impossible to extricate from at times.

I think Ahern is underrated. Her books keep getting slapped with the chick-lit tag, but they lack the frivolity that accompanies a lot of the books in the genre. On the contrary, they're insightful and go quite deep into the human condition. I'm always amazed by how she's able to grab me with her storytelling right away, from the first few pages and make me empathize with/root for characters that aren't particularly likable and that have quite a lot of flaws. But they seem real. Real people, living next door. People with whom you enjoy spending time with even if can be unlikeable and flawed. People that become more mindful about their existence, that go through changes and become better, wiser by the end. Her books make me look around me and think "Why don't I have people like Cecelia Ahern in my life?" I love her mind, the worlds she creates. I would just love to pick her brain over a cup of coffee.

I have always been a fan of Cecilia Ahern and I look forward to every new book that she writes, so, like others, I grabbed The Year I Met You as soon as it was released.
The story follows Jasmine, a successful business woman, as she goes through a year of gardening leave from work. Her life is thrown into turmoil; she simply does not know how to function without her work. As she now has plenty of spare time on her hands, she starts to take more notice in her surroundings, the people she interacts with and how she interacts with them. The main people in Jasmine’s life are her sister Heather, her neighbour Matt, a Recruitment Agent called Monday and her Father.
I struggled to like Jasmine, as I found her quite frustrating and quite self-centred. She was a bit of a ‘whiney’ character but, saying that, I did start to like her more as I read on and she relaxed a bit. The other main character Matt, I found more likeable. He initially comes across as an ignorant, rude drunk but you come to realise that this is not the case and I found it interesting to watch the relationship between Jasmine and Matt build.
There are a few sub-plots in the story, one being Heather, Jasmine’s sister, who has Downs Syndrome and is actually a lot more independent than Jasmine realises. Another sub-plot revolves around Dr J, their elderly and lonely neighbour. I felt that this situation was treated with respect and well written in the usual Ahern style. Monday’s character, I felt, was a bit detached. We never really found out much about him and he seemed to fit into the storyline a bit too well, his character felt like a bit of a copout. Jasmine’s Father is a typical over-bearing father with a younger child with another woman. Again, I felt that the character was a bit too ‘typical’ for me. Another sub-plot involves Kevin, Jasmine’s ‘cousin’. This was the most confusing element in the book for me as I really didn’t understand why he was there or what value he added to the storyline but perhaps I misunderstood his relevance.
Overall, this is not the standard that I am used to with Ahern and I was left disappointed with the book. Although I liked the characters (eventually) and the style and flow of the words, I really didn’t feel like there was much of a storyline here. This book was an examination of the process of change in people and their lives and how they overcome that change. Jasmine take to her garden during her gardening leave and the book chapters are split into the 4 seasons, so I guess the book was a metaphor for life being synonymous with a garden but it really lacked a basic storyline.

This is the first of Cecelia Ahern's books that I have thoroughly enjoyed. It had hidden depth that made me question relationships. The plot was simple with what appears to be uncomplicated characters, when in fact they were quite complex.

Feels like I have finally able to close a chapter in my life. And ironically, I did close a chapter recently. A chapter of you.

I always admire Cecelia Ahern's works. I got this book as soon as it was available in paperback, way back in 2015. Unlike some of her previous novels which I can divulge right in, that was not the case with this one. From 2015 to 2021, I only can get as far as chapter 2. I was in a quite a bad reader's block.

`We all have stand-out moments in our lives, periods which influenced small or profound changes in us. I can think of four life-changing moments for me : the year I was born, the year I learned I would die, the year my mother died and now I have a new one - the year I met you.'

'The year I met you, I met myself. You should do the same, because I think you'll find a good man.'

Time to say goodbye, and move on to hopefully a better life.

3.5 stars. Not too bad actually and not entirely predictable either.
Plus somehow it all feels appropriate for my state of mind these days.

Proper review to follow. Perhaps.

Das Jahr, in dem ich dich traf // The Year I Met You!!! German and english review

I'm so happy it's over.

Cecelia Ahern is one of my favorite authors, I usually buy her books without reading the summary of what it's about. I just love her books, except this one. It's been a while since I was so happy to be done with a book, just because I couldn't take it anymore.

Maybe it's because I listend to it and the lovely lady that read it, didn't do anything for me. Especially in the annoying moments, her voice was just too much for me. Sorry.

Overall I really liked the story and the way that Cecelia Ahern wrote it. But the characters. I just couldn't deal with them. The book is told from Jasmine's POV and she just was too much for me and most of her decisions made me shake my head. Then we had Matt, her neighbour from across the street. I just didn't like him that much, even though I have to admit that he probably had the most growth through the story.
And then we have Heather, Jasmine's older sister. She is the character that I liked the most. She was just wonderful and I would have loved to read more about her.

That brings us to the relationships in this book, I loved the relationship between the two sisters and it was one of the greatest things about this book. Jasmine was a bit over the top sometimes but their relationship was just the most important one. I also liked the way things changed for Jasmine and Matt and how they build a friendship (I'm glad that nothing more happened there). I'm still not very sure about Jasmine and Monday as a couple, even though I really liked him from the moment he showed up.

All in all, it was okay. It didn't really bring me any joy but from time to time, it was really entertaining.

When starting this book, I was a bit skeptical. I read some reviews and it was a mixed one. As I Started reading, I found it easy, not that much of character to get confused on. The title of the book, makes people think that this book falls in Romantic Genre but that's absolutely wrong judgement. As I read I wanted to find what is the main plot and storyline of the book. Then after reading a few chapter, I was feeling bored because it was like watching a typical Hollywood movie.

Being said this, the writer had done justice to the character in the end. And also she is now one of my favourite writer lists. Her writing is simple and engaging. I literally can picture words in my mind like a movie. After 15 and 16 chapters, I didn't want this book to finish. Because as people thought this book was a romantic one but it is not. Writer has shown a beautiful relationship between two sisters, best friend, colleague, and a messed up neighbour who becomes one of kind friend. And lots of gardening information also.

As this book certainly describe the quote: Never Judge a Book by its Cover.

Amazing.
Mesmerizing. Insightful
Cecelia's books Tells A story like magic.
Her Story telling is Brilliant.
This was different from other books of hers as it wasn't about two people falling in love. But 2 people having rough time together, they get acquainted, help each other. It's a wonderful story. I dnt have the words to describe much.

3,5 estrellas.
