it's probably a pretty good sign that i finish every volume thinking "that was probably my favorite one so far, right?"

Also Ajisai >

Spoilering this because I still want to maintain the surprise at the end of volume 4 for everyone.
So where the last book made me empathize with Renako's anxiety, this one has her autism front and center. Her attempts to handle going from never-having-had-a-crush demisexual lesbian disaster to being the fulcrum in a polycule wedge are hard to watch at times but they are so sincere and honest, and that's what I love about her. And that's what the rest of the Quintet love about her too.
With each book I find myself relating more and more to Renako. Some of the things she says, especially when she's trying to negotiate her relationships both romantic and platonic, could have come right out of my mouth.
This book also has some scenes not from Renako's perspective which is really good to get to know th other girls a little better. I was especially happy when Ajisai and Mai had a scene together where I was yelling at the screen "kiss! Now kiss! You two kiss!" and then turned the page and saw Ajisai suggest just that, I was like, ah, Teren-sensei, you get this! I would be shocked if the author didn't have personal experience with poly relationships, because not once is it mined for the usual mainstream drama of "oh how do I deal with the jealousy? What rules do we have to make this work, and what do we do when someone breaks them?" In fact early on both of these questions get posed by Renako and explicitly shot down by her girlfriends and by the narrative, and instead the drama is caused by outside forces as well as the individual insecurities and autisms of the individual partners.
I wasn't such a big fan of the 5déesses, but even they started to grow on me as the story went on.
I'm so looking forward to the next book and where it goes from here. I believe that Quinticule is endgame but I'm in no rush to get there, especially if the story continues to be this good which I fully expect it will be.
