Okay, what did I just read? And more importantly, why did I love it? This book is bizarre, dark, and kind of gross, but in the best possible way. Our FMC Carmen takes a job as an overnight security guard at a cemetery, and on one of her rounds, she meets Morrow, a literal ghoul. Yes, a centuries-old, flesh-eating ghoul who survives by consuming the dead. Morrow promises not to hurt Carmen as long as she lets him be. She agrees and somehow, the two strike up a strange friendship. Then things take a turn for the seriously weird: Morrow reveals that by eating the dead, he absorbs their memories, which fascinates Carmen. And before long, he starts mixing their blood so she can experience those memories too. And yeah, it gets really spicy. And unsettling. And weird. I kept having to stop, go back a paragraph, and ask myself, “Wait, is this really happening?” Not in a bad way, more like, “this is crazy and I need to absorb every detail”. If you’re looking for a novella that’s weird, macabre, and spicy, this one’s for you. Seriously. Just trust the vibe.
