Probably one of the best history books I have ever read. Saul Hofileña Jr. offers nuggets of historical gold but with elegance in his style of writing.
I loved the concept of "Under the Stacks" wherein the information that he is sharing to us are too important yet is in danger of being buried "under the stacks" of historical data and it might just stay there forever. Mr. Hofileña Jr. made sure that won't happen. The information that he is giving is just too good to stay buried.
It is quite an expensive book because the material in making the book is also expensive (thick glossy paper) because one of the things that his father taught him before the old man died was that a good book should be made with good material so that it will last long.
Now that is a writer confident of not offering mediocrity in his work.
Clear and analytic writing about the various events in Philippine history that have shaped this country and her people. Appreciate how the author would include less serious topic among the more serious ones (such as how one Manila mayor attempt to rid the city of prostitution) to make this book very readable. Must read for students of Philippine history.
