This was one of my daughters favorite books when she was 2. She enjoyed it so much, we signed her up for the Sesame Street Book Club.

By 3 years, she had it memorized. She even read the book time kids she babt-sat.

Bert goes shopping for groceries. Ernie has him repeat the list.

I can still remember 38 years later..eggs, paper towels milk, etc.

Ernie keeps telling him not to forget the oatmeal. Bert ties a string around his finger to remember.

Helps children with memorization, and picking out the items on the list when Bert gives shopping.

This was my favorite Sesame Street book as a kid. I was very excited to find it at a used-book store for $2 a few years ago.
Identifying all the stuff at the grocery store was always a lot of fun. Cookie Monster's cookies always looked really yummy too, even if I had no idea what the heck a macaroon was as a five-year-old. (I'll admit it: I don't think I knew what a macaroon was until I was 20.) I did always feel bad for the grocery store people who had to clean up after Cookie Monster's mess.
Anyway, the pages without a lot of items to identify aren't as fun, but it's still an entertaining story. The end upset me often though, because every time I re-read it, I hoped and hoped and hoped that they wouldn't forget the oatmeal. But they always did.

Rereading this was like being transported back to my own childhood. I don't know why this specific Sesame Street story stands out in my memory, but the string tied around Burt's finger is something I distinctly remember from this book. I love that Cookie Monster makes a messy appearance and that there's so much content in this book besides the story; you can reread it hundreds of times with kids and interact with it in many different ways.

Placeholder review, because I just started thinking about this again after many years, since even as a very young reader, I always wondered, WHY did Bert tie a string around his finger when Ernie already had a whole grocery list written, which could have been extended to add the oatmeal to it??

Very cute and educational, though I'd always thought one pound of meat from the butcher seemed low. (RIP cookie aisle)

This is a good word book to read aloud to a child, although it was not a favorite with my children. Bert forgets the oatmeal in this book, which teaches the importance of making a list before going grocery shopping and also names many common items found at a supermarket for your child to learn. This book is cute and colorful and Bert and Ernie are as quirky as ever!

I like this book a lot. Ok, so it's a little overly wordy. OK, so Cookie Monster goes a little crazy chomping down on the various foods. It's still a rock-solid Sesame Street gotta love those guys Bert and Ernie book.

I like sesame street characters and this word book can help children identify some grocery store items. For children who need a challenging reading book this is the one. It is funny too how Ernie always get Bert in one way or the other they still forgot the oatmeal.
