Tara Jenkins and Justin Westcroft used to be childhood BFFs. Now in high school, Justin’s a popular, all-star athlete, and Tara spends her days admiring him from afar. But when Tara saves Justin from nearly drowning in a freak accident, he’s unable to get her out of his mind. In no time at all, Tara and Justin fall deeply in love. And even though it’s only high school, they seem destined for a happily ever after.

Until tragedy strikes—and this time, Justin’s not so lucky. Tara passes through her days as a shell of her former Justin’s dead, but she can still feel his presence, and she can’t seem to let him go.

But there’s a reason for that, and it’s not just Justin is in between, and he’s still holding on.

They say that when someone saves you, you’re tied to them for life. But what about in the afterlife?

"This is the In Between. And it will be a test for your soul -"

This story was cute and a very fast read.
I liked the beginning and the intro to the couple and the drama with Amanda. Breaking the story out in parts gave it a nice pace and easily transition. I liked the idea of the guides and their help with Justin. The information about the rules and the what happens (and what's not allowed) in the in between was well done and didn't feel like info dumping (even if it was a bit cheesy). All in all, it was cute.

I really did want to enjoy “The In Between”, with the description of a romance combined with a unique idea of the afterlife sounding very intriguing to me. Unfortunately, after a promising beginning, it went off of the rails and turned into a chore to read.

There were many inconsistencies in the plot and characters. The age difference between the main character and her sister changed at least three times, and all of the qualities of the main character that were previously developed in the first two-thirds of the novel were completely thrown out to force her personality to fit in with the plot.

Also, one of my pet peeves is any novel that portrays an overbearing love interest as something to aspire to in romance. It’s bad enough in adult fiction, but I hate it even more in novels meant for young adults. “The In Between” is a particular offender in this category, with an extremely selfish boy who is, quite literally, defined as the epitome of perfect and pure love. I don’t want to spoil the plot, but he was pretty much willing to do anything for his own wants, and then the plot seemed to bend to make him the hero. It was more than a little off-putting and the reason I gave the book one star instead of two.

The plot itself is excessively busy. Around the halfway mark the “in between” portion seems to turn into its own novel with a host of characters and various plotlines that are introduced and then either left unresolved or brought to an abrupt, not to mention contrived, conclusion. It feels like the author wanted every story she ever thought of to be crammed into one book. One plot had so little to do with the other that I do not think it would have even worked if stretched into an entire series.

I cannot recommend “The In Between”. The ideas in it could have made for two interesting novels, but the combination and execution simply did not work.

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to Full Fathom Five and NetGalley.)

This was an okay story, but the pace was a little slow for me.

Tara and Justin were characters that didn’t really make a big impression on me. Tara was ‘nice’, but I didn’t really feel strongly about her, Justin wasn’t a typical jock, and again was ‘nice’, there wasn’t really anything outstanding about either character for me though, and I didn’t really feel involved in their story.

The storyline in this was basically about Justin dying, and his time in the ‘in-between’. I felt like I spent a big chunk of the book just waiting for Justin to die though (that sounds so horrible), and I didn’t feel sucked in by the romance the way I would have liked. I would have liked to have actually felt something other than relief when Justin eventually died, and I would have liked to have felt like I had some sort of desire for the couple to be reunited, which I didn’t.

The ending didn’t really work for me. I don’t want to drop spoilers, but I just didn’t really like it, and while it was happy, it wasn’t necessarily the most believable ending in my opinion.
Overall; slow paranormal romance,

Thanks to Netgalley for giving me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

True love transcends through time and space. It defies death and nonbeing. It binds you to another soul for all eternity...

Gosh darn it! I was not expecting to love this book. Like, Oh My Gosh! I admit it was a little cheesy, a little predictable, and quite unrealistic but I just adored it!

Tara and Justin were childhood buddies. They were each other's first loves. But life got in the way and tore them apart. Justin became the popular jock with the hot and totally nasty girlfriend. Tara was the wallflower loving him from afar. Then fate stepped in and reunited the lost lovers.

Tara saves Justin from drowning and creates a bond not even the devil can undo. They're blissfully happy and I'm absolutely ecstatic for them! But tragedy strikes and the two love birds are on opposite sides of coin.

Ughhh. The drama and the desperation to reunite with each other just gave me shivers. I wanted Luke to be happy too. His character was so lonely.

Overall, I heartily enjoyed this book. I recommend this to anyone willing to give it a try.

This was an okay read, but i lost interest.

Tara and Justin were both alright characters, but i can't say i loved them.

The pacing in this one was just too slow for me. I thought the the first few chapters were alright, but after that it started to drag. I went through a lot of the beginning wondering when Justin was going to die because of it, which sounds really really bad!

The ending was unbelievable, and quite cheesy.

Overall, Started out alright, but went downhil.

I started this book reviewing journey with a promise to myself and to anyone who cared enough to watch or read my reviews. And that promise was a simple one. That no matter how I came across a book, be it bought by my own money or sent to me, I would always give a 100% truthful review, no matter what my thoughts and opinions were on the book.
And this time is going to be no different. So with that being said I have to be honest with you about something else too. It might be a mark against me with publishers in the future, but my promise is more important than impressing companies.

I have always finished books. No matter how bored, or unimpressed or uncomfortable I was with them, I have finished every 82 books I have read since April. But yesterday while procrastinating this book, I had an Epiphany . Life is too short to read books you don’t want to read.
So truth be told I didn’t finish this book, because I simply didn’t think it was worth finishing. And here is why.

In order to keep my attention, a book has to start off good, and if not - at least pick up as it moves along. I also have to either love to hate or love to love the characters. Fast moving is also always a plus.

But I found myself meeting none of these needs with The In Between.

The characters -
Tara. Oh Tara. I literally couldn’t stand Tara. If she were a real person I would avoid her like the plague.
My problem with Tara is she is portrayed, in my opinion, as the typical movie unpopular girl. You know the one? So nice, so shy, takes her glasses off and is suddenly seen to be a babe by the world. She is irritating and her obsession for Justin left me rolling my eyes.
Also I don’t like Tara’s outlook on the rest of the girls in her life.
First off is Justin’s girlfriend. Or well the one he is with before Tara swoops in and saves his life. You know you are supposed to dislike her from the start because as Justin lies dying on the beach and someone calls for help, when Tara volunteers this chick is literally like “Anyone else?” This was x number one.
No one in the right mind dislikes someone so much they wouldn’t let them save someone’s life. It was an obvious show from the author that you are not supposed to like this girl.
Also Tara constantly talks about how cold, or stuck up this girl is towards her, but neglects to realize it might be because suddenly she is hanging around someone elses boyfriend, when it is obvious he has a thing for her. News Flash Tara! I’d be cold to you too, you silly witch.
Justin’s girlfriend is supposed to be the typical pretty popular bitch, yet before she starts appearing in someone elses relationship, Tara never gives a reason why she doesn’t like this girl.
Next is the description of Tara’s best friend. It seemed like another case of Saint Tara being better than all the other girls in her life. She comments on how her friend thinks she knows so much about boys, but really has no idea, and how she is constantly dieting etc etc. Sometimes I found myself baffled to why they were even friends.
I really dislike this pitting girl on girl thing for no reason at all.

Also there was the relationship between Justin and Tara. It happens incredibly fast, but while it moves at the speed of light, 12 chapters in that is literally all that has happened.

Now I always like to give something a try before I judge it, and by chapter 12 when there was no sign of anything happening except me wanting to kick the characters in the face, I knew it was time to bow out.

I was so frustrated with this books characters and lack of anything happening, it was impossible to enjoy it.

Obviously I won’t be recommending it to you, but if you do give it a shot please let me know what you thought.

Until next time

Hmm.. how to say it? Overall, I enjoyed the book although I have to admit, it was really cheesy in some parts. I am going to overlook all the grammatical and typographical errors because there were a lot.

First of all, while reading this, I had to remind myself that the characters were 16 year olds. The language used, the dialogs, I liked them because they were not pretentious unlike other YA books I've read that sounded like the characters were 30 instead of 16. I kept on reminiscing how I was when I was that age. I was maybe worse in the corniness department.

Character-wise, both Justin and Tara are "nice." Tara is this simple girl who has been in love for two years with her childhood friend but due to circumstances, her family had to leave town. They lost in touch with each other and grew apart. I couldn't see anything really special about her besides being able to do first aid and CPR. It's more like Justin's love defined her. Justin on the other hand is this school jock, a heartthrob, a brother, a son, and a boyfriend. He must have been a really great catch what with all the Amanda drama. His love for Tara defined him most, with the difficulty of letting go and soulmates.

I liked Luke. I wish I saw more of him. I hoped that there was something good in the end for him. Amanda, she pissed the hell out of me. Gabby was kind of annoying. Other characters I found irrelevant.

Plot-wise, I saw a lot of holes. I think the author took a big risk with having this kind of story for having the concept of heaven, hell, and the in between. There was no God mentioned but I'd rather think of it as mythological, not spiritual. That part about the missions in the in between, I just found ridiculous. I don't think one mission fulfilled or failed could define a person, whether they could go to heaven or hell.

There were parts that I really liked, I even highlighted some of them.

"...sometimes it feels like I have this image of me that has nothing to do with who I actually am. I mean, I know it does. But it's only one small part of me. It seems easier for people not to see the rest or even consider the possibility that there might be more."

It was easy to read but I was just too busy and stressed these days that it took me a few days to read it. Still, it's worth a try!

Whoa, what an unexpected novel! I went into this novel thinking it would be sappy YA, but it was a darling novel about loss, love, and the afterlife. THE IN BETWEEN by Olivia Pierce is a two parts mystery and one part lost love.

RELEASE DATE: November 2014

PUBLISHER: Full Fathom Five Digital

DISCLAIMERR: Novel was sent via NetGallery in exchange for a honest review.

SYNOPSIS: Tara Jenkins and Justin Westcroft used to be childhood BFFs. Tara passes through her days as a shell of her former self: Justin’s dead, but she can still feel his presence, and she can’t seem to let him go. But there’s a reason for that, and it’s not just grief: Justin is In Between, and he’s still holding on. They say that when someone saves you, you’re tied to them for life. But what about in the afterlife?

REVIEW: A novel filled with amazing quotes, I fell in love with it after the first few chapters.

Tara grew up with Justin - with their families so close, they were childhood best friends. When Tara moved away, their friendship was severed. When Tara moved back in high school, the friendship never rekindled, but Tara found herself to immensely attracted to grown up Justin. One day, Justin suffers from a freak accident, and Tara just happens to be the one who saves his life. Instantly, the friendship between them is rekindled and the attraction becomes mutual. Justin and Tara have a a solid half year together ... until tragedy strikes. This time, Tara can't save Justin. Justin awakens in the 'In Between', while Tara tries to imagine a life without her other half. Can either party move on? And why is Justin not in heaven?

I truly was not expecting to love this book, but I overwhelmingly did! It's totally predictable, and has the whole 'can't live without you' story line, but I was just so caught up in the lives of the characters that it didn't matter.

The paranormal aspect of this novel is probably what sold me. It's such a different interpretation of the afterlife and the three areas (heaven, hell, and 'purgatory', known here as the 'afterlife'). I was a little confused at some moments in the afterlife, there is a lot of rules and regulations that are confusing, overabundant, and unnecessary, but it was a unique perspective. Heaven is a place where you are at your happiest moment in life; Hell is full of your deepest darkest fears, imprisoned with you in a cell; the In Between is a mass void of grey - devoid of feelings. It was lovely to read such interpretations different from the norm.

I kind of wish the characters were a little bit older. 16 years old felt kind of juvenile for the 'love' described within this novel. The characters were wayyyyy too young. It was slightly unbelievable in that aspect. I mean, who really finds undying love at the age of 16?

Another unique aspect is this story's ending - it's either really cheesy or kind of cute. Jury is still out.

FAVOURITE QUOTES:
- "In here, the world is dark, hope is stark, but yet I embark. Make your mark, they say. Make your mark"
- "The first time I died, Tara Jenkins saved me. They second time, I wasn't so lucky. They say that when someone saves you, you're tied to them for life. But what about the afterlife?"
- "Besides, you know that not we're connected forever. It's a rule or something. Save someone's life, you get a little bit of their soul."
- "Everyone has one perfect moment in their lives. It might have been the day you died, or it might have occurred many years before as a single instant of happiness, anticipation, and fulfillment. A time, however brief, of perfect peace and contentment. There is one moment in everyone's life like this, whether you recognize when it is occurring or not. Here in Heaven, you are returned to that moment to live in it for all of Eternity. There is no past, there is no future. This perfect moment lasts forever."
- "If your perfect moment was the same as someone else's, if you truly shared it, then you will be reunited"
- "I suddenly understand. There is what Hell is, this is what had the others writing in their cells: your deepest fears and nightmares coming horrifically to life, each of us imprisoned alone in our secret terrors, without the promise of an end."
- "Some memories never fade, no matter what they would have you believe. They tell you that they will, they promise you 'the bliss of forgetting'. But they are lying to you. Do not believe them. Some things, some loves, you will never forget. And regret is a form of hell that lasts forever."

The In Between by Olivia Pierce, which is written in duo POV, tells the love story between Tara Jenkins and Justin Westcroft who used to be childhood BFFs. Life got in the way when Tara moved away and they grew apart until Tara saved him from drowning. They started dating shortly after that. Life once again got in the way when Justin died in an accident. Even after death, Justin, who is now in a place called 'The In Between', couldn't let go of Tara and he seeks to find a way to get back to her. And that is basically what this story is about.

I find this story really cheesy. I'll start by discussing the characters first. I find Tara annoying in the first part of the story. I get that Justin is her first love and she has the biggest crush on him; but girl, seriously, you need to stop going on and on about him. You think you love him but I wonder what you love about him. His looks or his social status?? Those are the two things Tara kept emphasizing on when she talked about her crush on Justin. Then, I found out that when Tara moved back to town, Justin did approach her. She acted distant and the reason was actually pretty ridiculous.

He reintroduced himself to me on the first day of classes. I totally choked. He was just so gorgeous, and all the Awesome-Nots were clustered around him, looking me up and down. It was disarming- and intimidating.

So, she got scared because of his hotness? By the way, in case you're wondering, Awesome-Nots is actually what Tara and her best friend, Gabby calls the popular kids.

Now, let's talk about Justin. I knew from the blurb that Justin is going to die. And so I waited, and waited for him to die, thinking that the story will definitely take off after his death. It didn't. In fact, it kinda plummets downhill for me after his death but I'll talk about that later. Justin developed romantic feelings towards Tara, whom he hasn't been close to for years, right after she saved his life. He then dumped his girlfriend and started dating Tara after that.... Is this infatuation or is this love, I wonder. I have no idea what Tara and Justin have in common except for the fact that they love each other. That's probably my personal issue. I don't have much experience to be eligible to judge that point about love but I just find it too... convenient for them to just develop this sort of feelings for each other so soon.

Luke, who by the way is Justin's best friend and has never spoken to Tara before she saved Justin, also develops feelings for her. He didn't make a move on her, of course and we didn't see much of him until after the death of Justin. The funny thing is that I actually could see the connection between Luke and Tara. They both share the same favourite book and Tara actually learns more about him as a person and not just talk about his looks or whatnot.

I don't find 'the in between' world believable. I have a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that heaven and hell is just a train ride away from 'the in between'. Also, the fact that the judgement that will determine where one goes to after life, be it heaven or hell, depends on your ability to carry out the mission given to you is just.. silly.

"More important to us at this particular juncture," Zerachiel is saying, "you must help her let go of you. We are quite aware that this will be a difficult task, likely the most difficult you have ever faced. To let go of what you love and desire most for the benefit of another soul is not an easy mission," he continues. "Many have tried and failed. And many more never even try. That is your challenge."

And then, the authorities in 'the in between' gave him a deadline-

"Your Judgement Day is two weeks from now," Zerachiel concludes. "You have until then. Not a second more."

Are you kidding me? What kind of mission is this? How do you expect someone to just let go of a loved one who just passed away within fourteen days? And why is the deceased given this kind of task in order to get to the other side? It makes no sense to me.

You know, I usually enjoy reading a good paranormal love story between a ghost and a human. But this... this just didn't work out for me. I mean, Justin isn't technically a ghost, he's not roaming earth and he can't even keep in contact with Tara without being monitored by the authorities.

The ending is not what I expected... so I guess that's a good thing then.. maybe. This was an okay read for me. I don't think the writing is good and I think the themes that are briefly touched on in the story such as family drama and friendship could've been further explored and maybe play into the story more.

I absolutely loved this book! Normally when you read the description of the book that says the following:

The boyfriend died and he is stuck in the In Between because he cannot move on to Heaven or Hell because he still loves the girlfriend and the girlfriend still loves him.

If you wonder what the ending might be, the first thought that will come to your mind would be that he will be reunited with her after a silly and stupid, unbelievable event. And I thought so as well until I reached the ending.

There were a lot of cute things happening in the story and I absolutely loved both Tara and Justin's character described in the book. They are both funny, light and their relationship with their family is described really well. The thing I loved the most in the book besides the ending was the use of language which was original and it made the reader feel and see what was happening inside the story.

"You left out the cause of the death," My.Bellows says simply, giving me the tour while reading my writing sample.
"Broken heart?" I quip.

Justin was like a hero at his school, when he died, everyone dedicated a day to him and then flowers, bouquets, notes, candles at this locker, gosh! :D

At times in the story, I felt really connected with Justin and Tara. When their thoughts were voiced out, I felt like I was similar to them, maybe I wasn't the only one feeling the same way. For example:

Justin said, "I don't want to disappoint them. My parents, my friends, Coach, everyone. I'm not saying it's wrong or it's bad but sometimes it feels like they have this image of me that has nothing to do with who I actually am. Maybe it's my fault. Maybe I am scared to try and show them."

The book pace was a bit slow but not bad that it left me hanging. I wasn't sure how the author would continue the story a two hundred more pages after the main hero dies but then the way she did was quite interesting and should be appreciated! Many people write these kind of stories but not all of them succeed in keeping up with the pace as well as ending the book with a logical and believable ending.

Tara: "That's why you like working with the Kickers so much, isn't it?" I ask.
"I just think kids should know someone's on their side, no matter what."

I was really surprised by the character of Malthus and Damaris.

I wish Luke could have ended up happy and while I was near the end and when Justin came back, I actually had a question, "Does anyone else remember what happened" and I am really glad the author had ended the story in a way which answered my question. Only Justin remembered, not everything but a strong feeling in the gut. The ending took place at the occasion after which Tara and Justin got into a car accident and Justin died. I could feel my heart racing, trying to know if that would happen again or not and gratefully, Justin made the different and safe choice :-)

He texts me before I get halfway down the block from his car: Miss you.

I didn't like Amanda and her friends who were always teasing. Especially at the end, Amanda and her friends acted like bipolar. They irritated me :/. Malthus should be punished at the end for betraying Damaris and I wish that she could have gotten someone better like Zerrachiel maybe.

Anyway, I didn't regret reading it :-) A really nice book and I am so glad that they got back after a believable ending.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve got a yet to be release book for you guys! I requested this book, hoping to take a chance on it. The premise sounded really interesting. This story is about a girl named Tara who has been in love with a boy named Justin for a long time. One day at the beach, he almost drowns and Tara saves his life. After then, Justin can’t get his mind off of Tara, and eventually he falls in love with her. After a few months of dating, Justin and Tara are in a terrible car accident, but this time Justin doesn’t make it. Tara is left alive, while Justin is on the other side, in the in between. The question is, can death still separate them?

I was up and down with this book. My emotions were all over the place. When Justin dies, I felt like I had lost someone myself. It was pretty intense, but I’ve been reading this really late at night when I’m tired, and I might have been in one of those super exhausted modes where you get emotional. I still believe, however, that this book will have your emotions all over the place. I mean one moment I’m sad at Justin’s death, and the next I want to slap his ex-girlfriend’s face!

When I first started reading this book, I thought it would be more on the contemporary side. It definitely starts off that way, but once Justin enters the in between, things start to go towards the paranormal. I liked the contemporary aspect of it much better than the paranormal. The paranormal side wasn’t as strong, and I felt myself wishing the story would get back to the contemporary aspect.

I also had a few problems with Tara and Justin’s relationship. Its not revealed until long after Justin dies, how long they were exactly dating. I know the hurt of losing someone was just as bad, no matter how long they were dating. But in the book, I had originally thought they had been dating for like three weeks. I wanted more depth from their relationship. I wanted to believe that their love was that deep, because they kept professing it over and over again. But because I didn’t find it that believable, I found some parts to be a bit cheesy.

There were a few things that were left unresolved, and it left me feeling like I wanted more. But the book ended in a way where those things didn’t matter anymore. I still wanted them resolved, but theres no need to. I’m torn on that aspect.

If you like stories where death can’t even stop true love, then this book may be the one for you!

I confess that this book was not exactly what I was expecting. The novel appears to tell a typical tale of YA love, but it also spends much of its time in a paranormal, mystical world of the "In Between." It's very odd and I wasn't expecting so much talk of Heaven and Hell, despite the hint from the title.

The story follows Tara Jenkins and Justin Westcroft. Friends as children, they become close again after Tara saves Justin's life, when he nearly drowns in an accident at the public beach. Now in high school, Justin is a popular soccer star, while Tara is just a "regular gal." Tara and Justin quickly fall madly in love and become each other's world.

Part of my issue with this book is just that - Tara and Justin are in high school and the entire book centers on their "great romance" and the idea that they are made for each other, destined for all eternity. Some people pull it off, even if it's a cheesy YA series like Twilight. You find yourself rooting for Bella and Edward. Here... I don't know. Pierce's characters just aren't well-developed enough. I like Tara, but I'm not fully invested in her. I actually cared for Justin a bit more (he seemed to have more of a head on his shoulders), but I don't get to learn enough about him, or really get to know him enough as I read the novel. Instead, you are just left wondering why two young kids are so in love and so convinced, at this age, that they are meant for each other. Instead of falling for their love story, it seems like a Made for TV Special.

Once Justin actually dies (and I'm not giving anything away, the book's summary is forthright in telling you that Tara can't save Justin a second time) and he goes to the "In Between," you find him in this weird mythical, mystical land, and it's just odd. I do feel empathy for Justin as he struggles to get back to Tara, and even for Tara, as she grieves for Justin, but it often feels like two kids playing at being grown up. With the distraction of some weird mystical characters thrown in to boot.

That being said, the book managed to keep my interest. I kept reading, wanting to know what would happen to Justin and Tara. Would they kill them both? Would they be reunited? Surely it wouldn't just end with him stuck here and her still pining away? After all this?! In the end, the ending is rather "pat" and the book just sort of ends.

Come to think of it, this probably *would* make a great Lifetime movie. And I'd no doubt guiltily enjoy it with a box of chocolates.

For some reason I just love these stories where you get two young people to fall in love then something tragic happens to one of them and we try to see if the one that survives will pick up the pieces of their heart and life and go on with it.

This book was no different we go back and forth between Tara and Justin's P.O.V.
Tara and Justin use to be childhood best friends. Their mom's knew each other and they even had a "pretend" wedding which I thought was cute and, I loved hearing about how they knew each other when they were little. That all changed when Tara and her family moved when she was seven. When Tara comes back to her home town everything has changed. Justin is this awesome soccer star, he has a girlfriend, he hangs out with the really cool people now. Tara just has her best friend Gabby.
When Tara ends up saving Justin one day their souls connect, and we see Justin and Tara end up together but then the unthinkable happens he dies. But can Tara move on?

Where Justin ends up is a place called the In Between which is a place between Heaven and Hell.
When Justin arrives he is given a guide to help him forget his life before he passed on so he can move on to Heaven. Sounds nice right? Well he has to complete a mission that will so the head honcho in charge of the In Between that he has said goodbye to those he cares about especially Tara. But we all know the book wouldn't be good if things just went great for him. Things tend to go down hill we go back and forth between Justin trying to figure out what is truly going on in the In Between world. We learn that his guide has her own past that she has to deal with as well.

Now the ending I kind of was like whaaaa (said in minion voice) it just didn't seem surreal to me, and I will leave it there I don't want to give anything away.

Before I go into anything I would say despite the 4 star rating, this is an amazing book and if you're considering reading it I would say go into it without knowing anything. There would be more surprises if you didn't read the synopsis.

I'll admit that I thought everything about this novel was perfect until I got to Part 4 or in summation: the ending. I mean, there were the right amounts of everything: angst, melodramatic teenagers, love and sadness but the ending was just the cheesiest and easiest way out. Why create a love triangle when you're just going to cast aside the character that I was so badly rooting and sympathising for?

Despite that, this book surprised me on how fascinating and stunning it was. You get the feeling reading the synopsis and starting the book that it will be another cheesy summer romance about first love with a devastating twist-and for a quarter of the book it was that- but the paranormal/supernatural twist was so unexpected. But it worked.

I thought most of the characters were interesting, even Amanda, but most of them just had undeveloped story lines. Especially Luke and Frank. Their characters created issues with the protagonist but I felt like they were just introduced, mentioned a few times and then forgotten. However, the other characters were a lot more interesting with the reunited old friends, bitchy and jealous ex girlfriend, helpful best friend who I understood a lot. They were all just different from each other and unique in their own way.

Overall, I loved this book and how different it is to usual plots in young adult romances lately. It's definitely unlike anything I've ever read.

I like to occasionally read a young adult book. Sometimes a good young adult book can transcend age and take you back to a different time in your life. This book didn't do that for me. But I can imagine that if I had read this book at age 14 I would have loved it. Unfortunately it didn't work so much for the adult me.

Tara Jenkins grew up best friends with Justin. But then she had to move away for a few years. When she moves back Justin isn't the same person he was before. Justin is the center of a crowd and Tara fills in the shadows. But one day everything changed. Justin drowns in the ocean and Tara has a chance to save him. Suddenly Justin "sees" Tara again. And they quickly fall in love. But then tragedy befalls them again and this time Justin isn't so lucky. But can death really separate them?

I had the hardest time accepting Justin and Tara's intense love. They are only 16 years old and only dating for a relatively short period of time. In order to accept the tragedy of their separation one has to accept their undying love. I just couldn't find it believable. Everything fell apart after that.

However, I have to give it to the author for creating an extremely intricate after-life scenario. Her creativity was what helped me finish the book. And the cover is great. Honestly, it was the cover that grabbed my attention. The cover gives off a slightly more mature feel than what the book actually is though. I really wasn't expecting a book geared for the 14-16 year old crowd.

The In Between is a sweet paranormal YA read that I would recommend for anyone who enjoys the genre, especially younger readers.

It is not a surprise from the blurb that a young couple fall in love and then the boy dies tragically. Justin and Tara are high school student who initially fall in love after she saves his life. What makes their romance so sweet is that they were childhood friends who lost touch after Tara moved away.

No high school drama would be incomplete without a mean girl clique and Justin's girlfriend/ex-girlfriend Amanda fits the bill perfectly. Other side characters include the loveable Luke, Justin's best friend.

The concept of the story is sweet and while it worked in some ways, in others it fell short of my expectations. Part of my problem with the book though is just personal opinion on the direction of the storyline. I wish the book had ended differently that it did. And a few side storylines that were included seemed incomplete. And while they were side stories, they were very important to the development of the main plot. So I felt like I was left hanging in a few places and I am assuming this is a stand alone novel.

The biggest problem I had was poor editing. Extra words, misused words, missed words... it interfered with the flow of the story. If the editing had been tight, I would have given this book four stars because it is a sweet story. Quick read but I did cry a few times which I think it a great thing.

Overall, I recommend the story to fans of YA as long as you can get past some editing issues.

Well I would say it's decent read and perhaps, no more.

I was really excited going into this book, with an intriguing plot, however soon I was losing interest a few chapters into the story.
The love between Tara and Justin seemed shallow to me despite it being the most important aspect of the whole story. I understand that they have known each other since young but it still went too deeply too fast. It just feels like the relationship between them could have been developed better instead of making it feel like a 'oh my god I just woke up today and discovered it's been you all along' kinda thing.

That being said, I almost DNF-ed this book but I'm glad I didn't. It did get better as the story went on, certain twists making me want to follow through and know what happened next. But I still felt that there were so much potential yet to be fulfilled. There would be something happening, I would be expecting more but.. it's not quite there.

Justin, in his pursuit of 'forever' with Tara, appeared selfish to me. That was not so likeable. Although that was central to the story, so that eventually they would be recognised as inseparable and given a second chance (hmm..), my impression of him just drooped. Instead, I'm really beginning to like Luke. He's a lovable character alright. It was a pity he didn't have happy ending. Honestly I was hoping Tara would end up with him but oh wells.

Overall, I would say this was a good attempt as a teenage love story but more thought could have been given into it.

The In Between By Olivia Pierce was not what I expected. First off I just want to say that I normally don't like ghost stories. But I read the description and decided to try it. I received this book for a review. While I don't normally like ghost stories I fell in love with The In Between. The only part i didn't like about it was it started off a little childish. But don't let the beginning fool you, it gets even better as the book progresses. The In Between is about a girl saving the boy she has been crushing on for about two years; although she has known him since she was a baby, they're not really friends. At least not until Tara (the main girl) saves Justin (the main boy) after the drowns at the beach. As the book goes on they become more than friends. But a terrible accident takes Justin from Tara. From then, Olivia gives you dual p.o.v. from Justin and Tara. I really loved Mrs. Pierce's version of Heaven and Hell. I didn't know which chapters I anticipated more Tara's or Justin's. There at the end shocked me, I really thought Tara would end up with the other one(don't want to name name's for those who have not read it yet.) Sounded like dejavu at the end, but when I finished the book, I realized what had happened. Great book, Fantastic story line, NO cliff-hanger, and keeps your interest although a little long was still a great book. Recommend to everyone, any age.
Thank you Olivia Pierce for this amazing read, please keep writing, your Terrific!

The In Between by Olivia Pierce is a young-adult paranormal romance story. It is about Tara and Justin. Tara and Justin grew up together until age seven when Tara’s family moved to Tampa, Florida. At age 14 Tara, her Mother, and her sister, Meg, moved back to Heron. Tara did not really reconnect with Justin until the summer before their junior year. At the lake Justin has a bad accident and needs CPR. Tara is the only person around who knows CPR and administers it to Justin. This begins the romance between them. Unfortunately, on the night of the Homecoming Dance there is a car accident and Justin dies. Instead of going directly to Heaven, Justin is stuck In Between. In Between is a grey world that is not Heaven, nor Hell”. Justin is told that he must complete a mission in order to go to Heaven. This is a sweet (and, sometimes, a little sappy) romance. Justin and Tara are very young but are soul mates and meant to be together. Justin will do whatever it takes to get back to Tara. The authors take on Heaven, Hell, and “in between” (most people would call it purgatory) are unique and different from normal perceptions. I liked In Between and will definitely look for more books by Olivia Pierce. Happy Reading!

Since they were children Tara Jenkins has always lad a close friendship with Justin Westcroft. In high school, Tara admires Justin from afar with him being a part of the ruling "Awesome-Nots". Their relationship becomes deeper when Tara saves Justin's life when he almost drowns. Tara's dream becomes a reality of Justin falling in love with her. They are destined for their happy ending.
On a rainy night, Tara and Justin are involved in a horrible car accident. Justin isn't lucky and is killed. As Tara struggles with her grief, Justin himself is trapped in "The In Between" as he is given a mission to letting Tara go. To forget and gain access to Heaven. Justin is determined to keep his love for Tara as she refuses to relinquish her love for Justin. But it will come at a price.
I have read a few books about the afterlife. A favorite is "I Heart You, You Haunt Me" by Lisa Schroeder. This book was at times cheesy and I wasn't that in too the author's idea of the afterlife. But I will confess that the story picks up and I wasn't able to put it down by the end, which is one I wasn't expecting.
Whatever your interpretations of the afterlife are, "The In-Between" is a nice love story on how it can transcends from beyond.

This book was so interesting and so fun to read. The author did a very good job at portraying the characters as 16 years old- often authors make the characters seem older than they really are but this author managed to write the characters perfectly.

While I enjoyed that the author made a 'world' such as the in-between I thought that the mission was a little bit crazy! I mean, it is crazy to think that one mission- given to you by 'something' is the thing that will define whether someone will end up in heaven or hell but this made the story very unique and interesting.

Amanda was perfect for the person that you just have to hate in a novel since they are sort of the main characters 'enemy'. She was horrid and devious and quite a bit like a lot of people can be.

I loved Luke- he was such a good guy and a great character that should have been expanded on! I would have loved to have seen something good happen to him.

The ending was unexpected to say the least- it was a good twist of events that either you will love or you will hate.

Definitely worth the time and effort to read. Perfect for a lazy day or for laying in the sun :)

*2.5*

Overall, I was not impressed by this book, but there were a few redeeming qualities about it that I think are worth mentioning.

The idea for this book is very interesting, being connected to someone post-death while being "in between" either going to Heaven or going to Hell. Also, I really appreciated the writing style of this book. While I didn't like the dual perspective for the first part of the book, I thought that Olivia Pierce wrote actual 16 year old characters. I believed they were sixteen because of the way she wrote them.

I didn't believe that they were sixteen because of the way they acted. There are so many OOC moments for almost every character in this book. And not only that but just unbelievable actions as well, like, actual, real, living people just don't do some of the things that Pierce made her characters do. Also, the main character Tara is so incredibly weak and dependent on Justin that when he dies she thinks about suicide at least twice, and I personally cannot condone that on any level.

This was really underwhelming for me. The romance was way too premature in the story - which on one hand I understand, because it's what influenced the rest of the book - but it just stopped me from enjoying it. The characters and plot were complete cliche's, and I didn't get attached to Justin or Tara, which is one of the most important things to have in a story that is so largely about romance.

There was definitely potential in the story, especially with some of the background characters, like Luke (who was probably the most likable out of the lot), and Amanda (even though she was the typical evil ex-girlfriend).

Tara herself is a blank canvas; described as average with brown eyes and hair. Her personality wasn't distinct either, and I really feel that she was written in a way for young girls to project themselves onto when reading this.

Overall, it just didn't live up to my expectations, which I think was caused by the overpowering romance. It was written as if it was supposed to be intense and all encompassing for them both, but it ended up just being over the top and irritating. And that was only in the first quarter of the book...

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

The In Between was completely a surprise to me! I picked this up sort of as an introduction to paranormal YA, because I thought it had enough YA contemporary elements. This book was a lot more paranormal then I believe the summary leads on, but still, I enjoyed it. I thought that the characters were developed pretty well, and I enjoyed going on this journey with Tara and Justin. I think that this book could have used more development in the love story, because I felt it hard to relate and feel for Tara and Justin when I still did not understand the capacity of their relationship. I enjoyed this book, I would give it 3.5 stars!

Tara and Justin have finally found their way back to each other after she saves his life. Their love is all-consuming despite their differences. Unfortunately their time together is dramatically cut short. Now they must do whatever it takes to find their way back to each other. Even defying the afterlife.

The first part of this book was fantastic. Justin and Tara's relationship was so sweet. However once we start on Justin's journey in the afterlife, the story started to get ridiculous. There were too many unanswered questions and a lot of the in between was not explained. Even Justin's ultimate mission made no sense. By the time I was 3/4 through his book, I was sick of scratching my head in confusion. Tara's journey to survive without Justin was so hard to read. However her relationship with her dad and other family members could have been fleshed out more. Also Amanda was painted as this evil villain but no clear reason was given as to why she went crazy and lost her mind. I was so disappointed that this book that had so much promise did not deliver.

This book was so rough to get through. The summary made the story sound so promising but I was rather disappointed. We knew going in that Justin was going to die but I had no idea when. It made it harder to focus on the beginning chapters of the book because I was just waiting for him to die. And once he did, I was over the book. I toughed my way through the book. However, I did like the characters of Tara and Justin. They were teenagers and talked like teenagers. Most of the time, teenagers in stories talk like they are in their 30s. I felt for Tara and losing her love. Sometimes it's hard to be the person left behind. This was my first adventure in paranormal romance type of books. Maybe if I try some more books out of this genre, I'll give this one another go.

3.5-4 stars..

I didn't know how to rate this book at first. Some bits of the story were repetitive, and I got bored for a while. One thing for sure though, this book is unpredictable. The ending took me by surprise, which is always a good thing.

The characters didn't have real development throughout the story, except for Justin. But surprisingly, it really doesn't matter by the end of the book because of the way that it ends. I don't want to give away the ending but it really makes sense.
