More Than Conquerors: On the Run is a young adult fantasy tale and book one of an expected series.

The story opens with three youngsters as they escape a prison facility. The reader is introduced to some of their mental and physical superpowers as they are set upon by members of a group called Killers. While on the run they meet up with some resistance fighters who also have a wide range of powers.

There is a meticulous amount of world-building which helped me to imagine the characters and the setting well; however, I did think that it slowed the story pace in places. The trio learn about many of the powers of those they have joined, and are given extra lessons to enhance their own strengths.

The author did a good job of introducing the background and the stage has been set for the next journey.

Edit to add this is an ARC review.
I'd give it a 1.5 if I could, but between 1 and 2 I'll be generous and say 2 because to me there are some very nice things in this book. I like Josh's character, he seems pretty well defined and different from the rest. The magic is fun, there are different powers and the fact some seem to be common for everyone, while others are fully individual and others are shared among groups (Conquest has signaling for example) is quite creative, and allows for many combinations. I think the world in general has some great potential too. The book is consistent with some details like character's habits, which I really liked, and even secondary characters are seen as powerful which I like but this is a downside too (explained later).

Unfortunatedly, there are way more bad things for me and some are pretty important. I was thinking about hiding all the review for spoilers but... there's none, because there's barely any plot, but I'll get to that.

First of all there's no info about the world at all, forget world-building, there's not even a little "we're in this country/planet and the Fireburst have been creating destruction for the last X years" and that made it really hard for me to care about anything because I lacked so much information. Why are the Fireburst causing so much destruction? This is even more important since they are described as very logical, and characters don't even consider this point. There's barely any information about the divisions, and it's a shame, it'd have made the book way more interesting for me. I also really didn't like how the information was delivered sometimes. Partially because they repeated information I already knew while leaving other information out, but also because some information is delivered almost at the end when there are chances to give it in a very natural way earlier.

The second thing that made me dislike the book the most is the lack of plot. I think this book feels like reading the second act of a story, the training arc. The ending is okay but I don't like finishing in a cliffhanger and due to the rest of the book it doesn't motivate me to keep reading the series, but rather the opposite.

Then there are many details that slowly but surely bothered me more and more about the book. While even secondary characters seem powerful, the protagonists are clearly the chosen ones, the ones that can't lose a single fight, at most they'll tie, and due to the lack of information they don't sound that experienced to justify this against people that it's said have a lot of training. They also recover from traumatic stuff overnight (literaly) and behave like nothing happened when they have been tortured for weeks. It made it feel so unrealistic to me, and I understand it's a Young Adult book, but I'd have liked it more if they were held for just a couple of days so it's more real that they are okay so fast. Also, to me every character sounded the same except Josh, and maybe Walter. The rest all seem like they are joking and bantering all the time and maybe that's why they all sounded so similar to me.

While there are other details and things I disliked I think this gives a good overview of the book and my experience reading it.

More Than Conquerors: On The Run by DJanée offers an ambitious story filled with action, emotional moments, and themes of resilience and survival. The premise is intriguing, and there are glimpses of strong character potential and meaningful stakes that suggest a promising series ahead.

However, while the story has its strengths, several aspects held me back from fully connecting with the book. At times, the pacing felt uneven—certain scenes rushed through important developments, while others lingered too long on minor details, which disrupted the overall flow. This made it harder to stay fully immersed in the narrative.

Characterization is another area that could use more depth. While the protagonists show moments of vulnerability and courage, their motivations and personalities occasionally felt underdeveloped or inconsistent. This made it challenging to fully invest in their journeys or understand some of their choices.

The writing style itself is clear and straightforward, but at times it lacked the polish and nuance that could elevate the story’s emotional impact. Dialogue sometimes felt stilted, and some plot points leaned on familiar tropes without fresh twists.

That said, the book does have moments of genuine emotion and tension, and the core themes of perseverance and hope come through strongly. Fans of fast-paced, action-driven stories may find elements to enjoy here, especially as the series develops.

In summary, More Than Conquerors: On The Run is a solid start with clear potential, but it would benefit from tighter pacing, deeper character work, and more polished prose to fully shine. I’m curious to see how DJanée expands this world and story in future installments.

More Than Conquerors: On the Run by DJanée is an energetic and highly imaginative work of Christian speculative fiction, blending sci-fi, action, and faith themes into a fast-paced, futuristic narrative. At its heart, this is a story about perseverance, belief, and survival against overwhelming odds that's a clear reflection of the author's intent to fuse entertainment with deeper spiritual resonance.

The world-building is ambitious: a futuristic society layered with danger, advanced technology, and oppressive systems. Yet, at the core of it all is faith, which is presented not as a preachy addition but as an organic part of the characters’ journey. Author DJanée’s writing captures the urgency of the chase, the desperation of her characters, and the resilience required to keep moving forward, even when the world seems intent on crushing them.

What worked well for me was the sheer momentum of the narrative. There’s rarely a dull moment; the plot races along with the same relentless energy as its protagonists, who are constantly on the run, battling not only physical adversaries but their own doubts and fears as well.

However, at times, the execution wobbles slightly and some parts feel overwritten, certain characters could benefit from more depth, and the pacing occasionally sacrifices clarity for speed. That said, the message shines through: faith can be the anchor in the most turbulent of storms.

I'd recommend this book for readers who enjoy speculative fiction infused with faith, action, and a strong sense of purpose. Think of it as a futuristic spiritual thriller with heart.

Thank you to Librarything and Djanée for this ARC!

This is the first book in a YA fantasy series that feels a bit like the Divergent series. It’s set in a dystopian world where people live in different divisions - the main characters coming from Conquest which has been destroyed.

The book is told from Sophie’s POV, one of the three main characters, and starts with them escaping from the Firebursts that have taken them prisoner.

I did feel that the story was lacking a little on plot and found it quite slow paced at times. We still know little about the three characters back story or purpose.

Overall, the book is an enjoyable and easy read with great detail and world building. It also has a lot of thought proving themes running throughout the book such as teamwork and caring for others. I will read the next installment as the book has left me wanting to know more !

If you like any of the below then this book is for you:

✨ Special powers
✨ Different sections/ divisions
✨ Rebellion
✨ War & Conflict
✨ Found Families
✨ Banter

Watch out as it ends on a cliffhanger!!!

This is one of those books where I kept wondering: do I actually like it, or am I just pushing through because I got the ARC?

Fantasy is my favorite genre, but this one didn’t really hook me. If it wasn’t an ARC, I probably would have stopped reading early on. The pacing felt slow and dragged in parts, though it was still readable overall. The writing is simple and easy to follow, but it didn’t connect with me emotionally.

I didn’t feel very invested in the characters or the plot. The storyline, escape, join the resistance, go on a mission, was stretched out with a lot of unnecessary detail, and I found it hard to stay engaged. I can see the potential, but it just didn’t quite land for me.

That said, the ending was actually pretty solid! A decent cliffhanger, though not one that has me eagerly anticipating the next book. If I come across the sequel, I’ll read it, but I’m not waiting on it anxiously.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC through NetGalley.

This was a tough one to review and it did take me a while to get through despite being a short book.

I did like the story in the end, but felt like a lot of the backstory was missing about the world, the current situation, etc. There are many terms thrown around that don't really get explained.

Despite that, I'm cautiously optimistic about sequels and I am curious what our little merry band of 'Conquerors' will do next.

I really loved the premise of this book, I felt that it had SO much potential and was excited to read it.
The opening of the book does grab you immediately and I liked the group of characters and I loved the different powers people have and how they can be trained.
Unfortunately I felt like more depth was needed, I’d have loved more backstory, more world building and explanations on the who, what and why of it all.
It felt like not much happened honestly in terms of plot, this book seems like it was the middle of a larger novel and I really needed the beginning and the end to help me care more and to make sense of things.

There is SO much potential here, I just needed more.
