يد القدير ومشرط الجراح

Rate this book
The life and ministry of Dr. David Thompson could easily be the stuff of which fiction books are made. David's father, an abused and orphaned child, grew up to be a missionary in Southeast Asia. There, David's parents were murdered by Viet Cong rebels. His father-in-law was kidnapped and marched into the jungle, never to be heard from again, and his mother-in-law spent time in the Hanoi Hilton, but was finally released. In 1977, David and Becki arrived at an isolated jungle post in Bongolo, Gabon, West Africa. Since then, he has performed more than 6,000 operations, at least one-third of which were initially out of his area of expertise and training.

This book is not just about surgery, it's about God's ability to enable, guide, protect and teach His children who find themselves in difficult circumstances. "And it's also about humor", adds David. "So much of what we do is really quite funny when viewed from God's perspective" (and the reader's too).

The ways in which he tells the stories of medical missionary life are just hilarious. I found myself sitting at work in the middle of the night laughing out loud hoping no one had heard me.

The tales of his work and life at Bongolo Missionary Hospital in Gabon, Africa are alternately difficult and funny, just as the subtitle claims. I'm happy to have read it, grateful for the insight Dr. Thompson gives into medical work in the undeveloped world, and challenged to spread God's word in my own small 'mission field' by his gentle rebuke. The difficulty of balancing medical work, surgery, treating patients and the necessities of living where electricity, roads, and critical supplies are often missing was well-explored.

I was especially interested in Dr. Thompson's honesty about his own anger at some of the roadblocks - sometimes literally! - that were placed between caring for people and the medical team. It reminded me that missionaries are not holier-than-thou, paper saints with radiant halos, but are men and women trying to do their best to follow God's call. I'll be praying harder for the missionaries around the world.

Honestly, though, I was disappointed by the writing, especially the overuse of exclamation points and the simplistic syntax. Much of the early chapters read like a student paper. If the reader is able to tune that out, I'd recommend it to anyone interested in daily life in the jungle.

"The Hand on my Scalpel" tells anecdotes from Dr. David Thompson's time as a surgeon and missionary in Africa. Transporting a goat on top of a vehicle, passing through water-logged areas to get to a preaching engagement, fighting for the good of an orphaned child, surgeries, and how trying to build one simple outhouse can get complicated are some of the adventures you'll read.

One interesting side-note is that Dr. David Thompson's story has a connection to another missionary adventure. "Captured" by Carolyn Paine Miller features a cast of characters surviving imprisonment in Vietnam. One of Carolyn's fellow prisoners was Betty Mitchell, Dr. David Thompson's mother-in-law.

This reads much like Dr. Thompson's previous "On Call", expanding on some stories and detailing new ones. He describes his efforts as a surgeon in rural Gabon, bringing life in sharing the gospel and providing medical skill saving thousands. Sometimes, his skill and action saved a life. Other times, God clearly intervened to bring inexplicable healing. God is still at work, using the faithful obedience of humble people like Dr. Thompson. This is a convicting read, yet made me smile often at his humor and wit. Highly recommended.

Not just for medical folks

What I gleaned from this book was not medical knowledge really but spiritual bites. I have Doctor speak and seen his passion for Africa. He has shown me in this book 1) doctors make mistakes, 2) people are gracious when you relate to them, 3) God guides in ways we don't dream of. Thank you for sharing your heart and your life with all readers, not just doctors.

Fascinating

This book had me laughing at times, crying at others, amazed at the commitment and creativity and wisdom of the doctor and his team. Hard to put this book down even when we’ll past time to sleep.

Dr Thompson tells many stories from his work in Gabon, some from the operating room and some from the mud under the truck in his Sunday clothes. Some stories will challenge you and many will find you laughing as you imagine the predicament.

I enjoy reading Missionary stories because I can see how God is with them at work 24/7. So inspiring and fills me with faith. This doctor shares some of the most difficult situations encountered and how God responded every time.
