Scientific American Library Series #58

Gravity's Fatal Attraction: Black Holes in the Universe

Rate this book
Richly illustrated with the images from observatories on the ground and in space, and computer simulations, this book shows how black holes were discovered, and discusses our current understanding of their role in cosmic evolution. This second edition covers new discoveries made in the past decade, including definitive proof of a black hole at the center of the Milky Way, evidence that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating, and the new appreciation of the connection between black holes and galaxy formation. There are entirely new chapters on gamma-ray bursts and cosmic feedback. Begelman and Rees blend theoretical arguments with observational results to demonstrate how both approaches contributed to this subject. Clear illustrations and photographs reveal the strange and amazing workings of our universe. The engaging style makes this book suitable for introductory undergraduate courses, amateur astronomers, and all readers interested in astronomy and physics.

Čekala jsem trochu něco jiného, ne tři sta stran o černých děrách a galaxiích. Nicméně špatné to nebylo, plno zajímavých informací (ještě aby ne, tahle edice je prostě skvělá).

I had the privilege to be under the direction of Mitchell Begelman in my first semester of university. His class was very well organized and I appreciated this book as well.

For laymen, but quite in-depth. Many very well done illustrations.

Skvěle zpracované téma černých děr a neutronových hvězd.
Kniha napsána před detekcí gravitačních vln a před přímými fotografiemi černých děr.

Mitchell Begelman and Martin Rees reveal all there is to know about what we think we know about black holes, in the fully illustrated Gravity’s Fatal Attraction. From microscopic black holes, stellar mass black holes, to supermassive black holes residing in every large galaxy and powering quasars, this book makes for a good introduction to the topic. It even contains a chapter on the role these exotic objects play in the evolution of the Universe.

This book is time consuming to read and process, but it is informative and it attempts to put things in an easier to understand way (if that's possible for something we still know so little about.) I had to read it for a summer graduate astrophysics class at Penn State.

Explains Black Holes in a way that is understandable even if you are not an astrophysicist.
