Paul Morand

He was a graduate of the Paris Institute of Political Studies (better known as Sciences Po). During the pre-war period, he wrote many short books which are noted for their elegance of style, erudition, narrative concision, and for the author's observation of the countries he visited combined with his middle-class views.
Morand's reputation has been marred by his stance during the Second World War, when he collaborated with the Vichy regime and was a vocal anti-Semite. When the Second World War ended, Morand served as an ambassador in Bern, but his position was revoked and he lived in exile in Switzerland.
Post-war, he was a patron of the Hussards literary movement, which opposed Existentialism. Morand went on to become a member of the Académie française; his candidature was initially rejected by Charles de Gaulle, the only instance of a President ever exercising his right to veto electees to the academy. Morand was finally elected ten years later, though he still had to forgo the official investiture).

I don't really care for history books/classes usually. In fact I have to make up imaginary stories about historical figures to keep myself entertained in history classes. Stuff like this President hates bagels and has a crush on the cute docent who leads tours. Or this queen likes to only pet grey cats and loves when parakeets fly into mirrors.
Anyhow, that's what this book felt like. Perhaps because it was a translation...I don't know, but it was entertaining and informative. It made the people feel like real people/characters. It is out if print. I had to track my copy down, but it was totally worth it. If you stumble upon a copy at the bottom of a stack of books in a moldy library basement, grab it and run. You won't be sorry.

Und noch ein Roman über die gefangene Prinzessin, der Schmidt schon in DAS STEINERNE HERZ ein Denkmal gesetzt hat!
Morand erzählt ihre Geschichte und fügt Originaltexte der Briefe ein, die Sophie Dorothea und der Graf von Königsmarck gewechselt haben.
Leider stört mich die schwülstige Sprache Morands, zum Beispiel solche Sätze:
"Sobald die Wünsche der Herzogin sich erfüllten, würde sie sich erleichtert fühlen wie eine Karyatide, die von dem Gewicht ihres Gebälks befreit wird."
Oder:
"Unter weißer englischer Baumwollspitze glänzen ihre schwarzen Locken im Morgenlicht und wetteifern mit dem Glanz des Zinngeschirrs in den beiden Ebenholzschränkchen, die links und rechts des Alkonvens angebracht sind."
Beide Zitate stammen von der ersten Seite, eine unglückliche Häufung. Hinzu kommt, dass gleich zu Beginn der Leser mit vielen Adelsnamen konfrontiert wird, und wer ein schlechtes Gedächtnis hat oder mit der Geschichte nicht auf Du und Du steht (bei mir kommt leider beides zusammen), wird erst einmal Mühe haben, sich zu orientieren. Da hilft dann auch die Stammtafel nicht weiter, die vorangestellt ist.
Dass der Druck nicht Augenfreundlich ist, ist Morand natürlich nicht anzulasten, aber etwas mehr Großzügigkeit hätte gut getan.
Eine Liebes- und Ehebruchsgeschichte aus der Zeit des Absolutismus, die für Sophie Dorothea schließlich zu dreißigjähriger Verbannung führt, das ist trotz allem eine erzählens- und lesenswerte Geschichte und vor allem für Schmidt-Leser interessant, die mehr über die Prinzessin wünschen möchten.
