Book 3 in the Cleary Case File series introduces Jaimie Carpenter, a brilliant medical researcher who’s tagged by the FBI to identify the cause of a deadly superbug outbreak. A novice at intrigue, Carpenter is faced with too many suspects and a partner who could take advantage of her naiveté.
Meanwhile, FBI Agent Shawn Cleary is trying to convince her associates that recent suicides are the result of an ingenious criminal conspiracy. She theorizes that a splinter group is mimicking the NSA’s eavesdropping, identifying would be criminals, and cleverly eliminating them. The self-named Patronus prevents a massacre and declares society as its client.
The disparate cases are merged with the hard-edged Cleary acting as a mentor to Carpenter, trying to keep her focused on their common goals – find the perpetrators and prevent a pandemic.
Patricia Clark combined her thirty-year background in the nursing field and her interest in the effects of micro-organisms to craft her medical thriller, The Jekyll Island Club. She began writing in 1995. Pat lives with her husband and three children in a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri.
This is the first book by this author I have read. It is the third in a series but at no time did I ever feel as if I am missing out on any aspect of this story.
I really, really liked this book. Two negative points then onto the good things.
Authors, if you are talking about genocide, get a bigger trigger, mommy or grand mommy issues is not a strong enough reason to go over to this extreme....that said, mommy issues can be really bad but then you need to explore it more and deeper and make the abuse clearer. If you cannot do this, then drop the motivation. Plenty of authors never explain the true motivation behind their protagonist?s motivation.
Secondly, and this is specific to this book. Please authors do not write John said, Jen replied and Mathew said and then John said. It is a bit more than simply annoying.
So in all dear author you should get from me a 3 * review. One star removed for writing, and one for content BUT.
The story is so good and I had so much fun reading this book that I am giving this book a star for pure entertainment value which, as an avid reader is for me the most important aspect of reading. I do not read fiction to be informed but to be entertained.
FBI Special Agent Shawn Cleary is trying to convince her superiors that a series of assumed suicides are actually acts of murder by some vast conspiracy. In the meantime, a deadly and often fatal disease breaks out in widely separated locations around the country. The FBI taps Shawn’s best friend, medical researcher Jaimie Carpenter to identify the super bug behind the outbreak. Working together, the two women become involved in a conspiracy beyond anything they’d imagined. A drug company CEO who puts profit and position above anything, a serial killer with an ambitious agenda, and a shadowy organization, ‘The Protectors,’ that is taking the law into its own hands and eliminating terrorist and criminal threats extrajudicially. To further complicate matters, Jaimie is paired with a handsome FBI agent in an undercover operation, and the sparks that fly between them threaten not only to derail the mission, but puts them in jeopardy. Third Breath by Patricia Clark is an exquisitely-written medical thriller, and the author uses her medical knowledge to add to the suspense—but, it’s not the technical aspects of this story that truly entertain. Ms. Clark uses the interpersonal dynamics, whether it’s sexual tension between Jaimie and her partner, or a wife’s reaction to being beaten by her abusive husband, to advance the story, and explain character motivation and action, and it’s these moments of conflict between characters that is the strong point of the book. In fact, about midway through, the search for an antidote to the superbug becomes secondary to catching the bad guys and eluding the deadly tentacles of The Protectors. This is a book that, once you start reading, you won’t be able to put down.
Very interesting book! Although part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone.
A mutated Klebsiella pneumonia bacteria is killing people in several cites across the country. No one knows where it came from, but they need to find out, and discover a cure before it becomes the next pandemic.
This is the 3rd book in the series and I have enjoyed all of them. This one had two individual story lines going, as well as romance. The author keeps you guessing and interested at the same time with the fast-paced action.
I am definitely going to read book 4, Four Play. Right now!
Because it was. Good story, not quite the ending expected. Why do women take such a beating from their husband's and still stAy with them She did the right thing in the end, but what happened to her and Margo?
After finishing First Kill All the Layers, I was hooked. I'm now beginning the final book.. I highly recommend all three of the series. I have no reason to doubt this last book but stay tuned.
Poison was set loose and an antidote was formulated. A complex tale of murder, secret agents and politics. It all came together by the last chapter. So many layers of secrecy and lies.
I was truly captived by this book. Had a hard time putting it down. She writes in a style that captures your attention and doesn't let go. A must read.
I only give 5 stars to fiction that Blows Me Away. This is a book about a bacteria that doesn't respond to any antibacterial and kills 100 people. The source is tracked to a pharmaceutical company, and a researcher is sent in undercover. I didn't know until the very end who had developed this bacteria and who was just a bad guy. I didn't know who would survive. This is a full-length book with fairly good editing. Recommended!
The book was good, got a little lost at times with two story lines going at the same time. I'm sure things will come together in the next book. (Could be the time of year too, concentration level is not good around holiday time)
