Love #1

The Tiger

Rate this book
A day in the life of the king of the jungle, this lavishly illustrated story follows a single majestic tiger through a wordless adventure of survival as it hunts prey and defends itself from other would-be killers defending their territory. This exciting tale is told without narration or dialogue, conveyed entirely through the beautiful illustrations of Federico Bertolucci. A beautiful, all-ages title that explores genuine natural behavior through the dramatic lens of Disney-esque storytelling. Like a nature documentary in illustration.

i'm glad i read The Fox - the second volume of this standalone graphic novel "series" first. i definitely liked this one, but that fox one made me immediately order this one in with "must have" fervor, and i didn't feel the same sense of urgency after reading this one.

 photo IMG_7266_zpsod1k5j0f.jpg

it's the same format as The Fox - wordless sequential art that represents a "day in the life" of a tiger as it hunts, fights, and eventually gets a good meal. the art is great, but it's somewhat less-great than fox. i do not have the vocabulary necessary to discuss art, but there's something about this one that just seems a little more basic; there's less background detail filling up the panels, and there's a tendency to show a little too much "emotion" in the animal expressions, which cheapens it and makes it less "this is nature" and more "this could be a disney movie."

 photo IMG_8021_zpsw8icbjra.jpg

 photo IMG_8022_zpsjb03pwud.jpg

 photo IMG_8019_zps5wgzm764.jpg

if this were disney, this tapir would be "dopey."

 photo IMG_8018_zpsuuwxzww5.jpg

compared to this panel from fox:

it's still great, don't get me wrong, and there's even a fox for greg, although not the same one-eyed fox from the second volume

the best parts are, naturally, the animal smackdowns

 photo IMG_7259_zpsio5nodwu.jpg

but also worth noting is panther vs. piranha

and, of course, the ending. no spoilers here!

i am definitely going to grab the next volume as soon as i can, and i hope at some point there will be a red panda protagonist. fingers crossed!

This book is absolutely gorgeous, a hardcover graphic novel about life in the jungle.

It features and follows a tiger, but the tiger also encounters and engages with other animals on his (her?) journey: tapirs, elephants, panthers, peacocks and more.

This book has no words and is a graphic novel that is engaging and perfect for any age group, children, teenagers, and adults. It's not childish but it's not "too adult" either. ANYONE of any age could enjoy this.

The illustrations are beautiful and breathtaking.

The book also has a surprise ending, so don't flip ahead! Read it straight through.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for a beloved friend, and it was even more beautiful and wonderful than I'd expected based on what I'd seen online. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Highly recommended.

A day in the life of the king of the jungle.

Somehow I found this graphic novels aimed for children quite ironic. Hard to explain without not revealing the end of the story.

But what I can say is that the tiger is hunting food and we get to follow it through the day as it tries is best to get a snack and meanwhile it run into other animals both dangerous and not dangerous.

The art is superb, I'm not sure this graphic novel is suitable for younger children but older children perhaps 7+ will probably enjoy this book.

Thank you Diamond Book Distributors and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy for an honest review!

That is not Bagheera and Shere Kahn on the cover, despite what I thought when I grabbed this book. It is, however, a representation of what Toki and Evie think is happening when they're rough housing (Evie being the tiger and Toki the panther)

This book contains depictions of violence and survival within nature. It is intended for ALL AGES

Hahaha! Not here in the US, it's not! Dude, there's violence and death and slug sex and elephant sex and we must not allow the little childrens to see such harsh realities! Won't someone think of the children? I imagine this won't go over well with some parents, not with the fighting and killing, the sex, and that ending.
However, there are plenty of other families who will enjoy this book and will discover many talking points throughout. You know, if that's their thing, learning via books, and all.

Anyway...so. This is beautiful. It's storybook sized, the colors are natural (not in neons, not overly muted), the pages are glossy, the art is enchanting. It's just a lovely product, altogether.
The story is fun, too. There's just enough cartoony-ness to mildly anthropomorphize the animals but not so much that they become creature caricatures of people.

It does not have the ending I was expecting even though I saw the clue off in the distance and even though I know better than to expect animals to act like people and even though I know Disney tells lies. I was still a bit surprised..and I giggled. I'm a crappy human being.

Received from Netgalley for review.

It's all about the art. This is a wordless book, so the art has to carry the day. And it absolutely does. I mean, look at that cover. It's beautiful, and detailed, and, most importantly, accurate. The art inside is the same. And it would have to be, for this story. Because this is simply an unsentimental "day in the life" story, except that it's a day in the life of a wild tiger looking for a meal. I know it doesn't sound like much, and it is a very short book. But it's also a very beautiful one.

This is an art book about one day in the life of a tiger. Some scenes remind me a bit of Disney's The Jungle Book bu I might just be too influenced because I grew up with that movie and watched the new life-action version only this past weekend.
However, as far as my research showed, the author did a lot of research into the natural behaviour of the tiger so all the encounters shown in this book actually occur like this in the wild (although maybe not all in one day ;P).
Anyway, the book has panels with scenes but no dialogue or narration, which works very well. It's almost like a documentary in gorgeous, lively colours by Federico Bertolucci. In the back of the book there are some pencil drawings and you can see the process of how certain animals were first sketched, then drawn, then coloured.

The art is definitely the focus here and I couldn't stop staring and the brilliance from page to page. The colours are fantasticly chosen (like the shades of green for the jungle, interrupted by the firy orange of the tiger - or the browns ans greens of the jungle against a myriad of blues from a peacock).

I'm in love ... HEY! That's where the title of the series must come from! :D

There's something magical about removing humans from the equation.

This wordless, full-color graphic novel follows the journey of a tiger through the jungle, with tangent glimpses into other animal lives.
The book itself is large (around the size of a piece of amerikan printer paper) and slim (the narrative ends at page 74), with rounded corners on the cover and stunning end papers. There are poignant quotes before and after the narrative, and a few pages of extra matter at the back.

The concept is so simple, it seems like something that should be forgettable. I didn't put it on hold the first many times I heard it existed. But someone brought it up to me as something I should notice and ingest. And I found myself wanting to bring it up to loved ones weeks after I read it.

It gets to the heart of existence in the world - how (un)important beings are to each other. How central our stories are to ourselves.
Life is brutal.
There's no way around that.

I received this book from NetGalley.com for my honest review!

In this graphic novel the reader gets to experience a day in a tigers life. The illustrations are dynamic and they present the hard life of a big cat as it searches for food. The art style is absolutely amazing and the colors are vivid making it an amazing read. The artist managed to present the animals and the landscape in their most beautiful way with the help from traditional art.

The artwork is truly incredible. I loved the realistic style, the rich colours and the attention to details. Every background was rendered beautifully. While the panelling is rather simplistic, it adds to the overall appeal.
While the title character may play an important role in this story, it's more of an exploration of life in the jungle and interaction of the animals in them. It's basically a slice-of-life with animals.

What put me off giving it five stars is the something weird anatomy of the tiger and other animals and the abrupt ending.

Holy surprise ending! The artwork was wonderful, but there were a few inconsistencies. There were piranhas in the book. I might be wrong, but I believe they are indigenous to South America. Reading this was similar to watching a nature show, but without the annoying voice-over.

Love series - four trips into animal’s world

Czech version here: vlcibouda.net/komiks/love-ctyri-vylety-sveta-zvirat

Writer Frédéric Brrémaud and artist Federico Bertolucci created comics series named Love. No, it’s not erotic series, but a bit of that is there also. This series is about animals. Not about antropomorf animals, as is usual in comics books and animated movies. This is about wild animals. It’s like National Geographic documentary movies. These animals don’t talk. They are hungry, they want survive and they will do everything for it. Ideal topic for silent comics books.

“IN THE ANIMAL KINGDOM, ANIMALS NEITHER LOVE NOR HATE EACH OTHER.
LOVE AND HATE ARE PARTS OF A NATURAL WHOLE. A SUPREME BALANCE MANY CONSIDER TO BE UNIVERSAL, OR EVEN DIVINE. AN ELEMENTAL LOVE.
A LOVE THAT MANKIND COULD NEVER EXPERIENCE.”

It’s fantastic how much animal species was Brrémaud able add into each story. Love comics books looks like books with animals for kids but in kid’s books animals don’t torn another animals to pieces. When python is crushing monkey and her eyes are going from head almost then it’s not nice picture and smaller kids can have nightmares then. :-)

The Tiger

The book tells about one day in tiger’s life. Simple and fast storytelling with clever scenario. The reader wishes him success, despite he cannot identify with him. It’s interesting that scenario doesn’t following only the tiger but also tapir as his prey, crockodile, piranhas and many other species - from ants to elephants. Their ways will be crossing these day and they will affect their live each other. Scenario is clevery working with thrill when you are folloving more animals at once and you don’t know when their confrontation will happen and who will survive.

Art of Federico Bertolucci is amazing. He can draw animals in move very well and also he can create atmosphere of the jungle very nice. All the sun shining through the trees… wonderfull! Another interesting thing are angles of view that are used for showing view of unexpected animals.

The Fox

The story of fox is on the similar principes like the tiger. Many animals species and their ways are crossing. There is some species that probably never can meet or it’s not so usually but fight of bear with polar bear is simply cool :-) As in the Tiger also here stronger animals are hunting weaker animals and hunted animals are doing everything to survive. Big role in story of fox have island. The story takes place on an island somewhere in the north and that island is just torn to pieces by vulcanic eruptions. The most of “wow moments” in book is due to power of vulcan and how incredibly is it drawn. The fox is in role of predator and also prey. But it’s not important now. Now she has to run in opposite way that another animals, in direction to the volcano and lava. On the hill is hole under the tree and in the hole is small baby fox. Who will, be there faster, mother fox or lava. Art of Federico Bertolucci is amazing again.

The Lion

The story of lion is trip on safai between the lions. The other animal species don’t have bigger role now - they are only prey. This story is about lion alpha male and his pack, about lion renegades and one young lion avenger. Story is not so clear here and it’s not easy to identify lions in story.

The Dinosaur

Trip to the world where everyone wants to eat everyone. Fast scenario is following small and nonstop hungry chicken with teeths - or rather his toothy ancestor. This toothy chicken wants eat everything smaller than him and everything bigger wants to eat the chicken - including big dogged T-Rex. This story is shorter that the others and the rest of book contain bigger bonus part with draws and studies.

As beautiful as this may be, it's also inherently stupid. In trying to show the saga of a day in the life of a tiger it makes everything in the jungle inter-related, with this eating that then getting chased by the other, while that is on hand for something else again to die, so what we end up with is a bizarre amalgam of spiritual animal horror, fable, and heavily truncated nature documentary about this particular food chain. If it were to have a voice-over it would be one of those stupid, anthropomorphising ones, as the tiger certainly bears his emotions on his face and we're supposed to see – well, I didn't learn what – in his spirit being humanised. Given the outstanding artwork I really was expecting something a bit more enlightening, or at least sensible.

A day in the life of a tiger, with a focus on interactions between the tiger and other animals, sometimes violent, of course, since the tiger is constantly hungry. Silent, it is framed by thoughts about love and hate not being part of the animal kingdom. I thought it was a little Disney-esque, in a bad way, too simplistic, a little too cinematic and cloying though still accomplished art work by Federico Bertolucci.

Beautiful illustrations, the story flowed effortlessly without the use of words, or even sound descriptions. Hard to do considering this is a children's graphic novel. I was completely entranced with what was happening, finding myself invested in not only the tiger's storyline but the animals around him. Still not completely sure how I feel about the tiger and it's eventual success at the very end.

Beautifully done 4/5

This is a wordless graphic novel, gorgeously illustrated, depicting a day in the life of a tiger in the jungle - perhaps in India or Sri Lanka (guess based on the habitat of the Bengal tiger as well as the other animals in the book, but could also be Bangladesh, Myanmar, or Malaysia).

I was intrigued by the title and mesmerized by the pictures. Since I had already read the third book in the series, each featuring a different wild animal, I knew what to expect, although I must admit the ending surprised me.

Although the book is wordless, the plot wasn't very challenging to follow, much easier than the plot of Love: The Lion. I was amazed by the raw beauty of the images, even in the brutality of the fights.

I found this book in the children's section of the library, and I would caution parents to be aware of the nature of the story. Several animals are killed, and sensitive young children may find the images disturbing.

But compared to what is depicted in many video games, I guess it's tame. It's certainly milder than what is shown in the third book, Love: The Lion.

interesting quotes:

"In the animal kingdom, animals neither love nor hate each other.
Love and hate are parts of a natural whole. A supreme balance many consider to be universal, or even divine. An elemental love.
A love that mankind could never experience."
(p. 2)

"'JUNGLE' -- the word is derived from ancient Sanskrit, evoking a space that is brutal, claustrophobic, and unforgiving. A place of challenges and nightmares. A foreboding hell filled with beasts of all kinds.
But a hall disguised as a lush paradise..."

Love the Tiger is a wordless, short comic about a tiger going through its daily life of hunting things and traveling around. The tiger sees other animals like elephants and such, in the jungle that the tiger lives. The art style is very interesting, and is more on the semi-realistic side of things. One tiny detail that I loved about this book is how the tiger's eyes have pupils when he isn't hunting, but when he is, his eyes lose their pupils. It creates this cool sorta feral-wild animal esc feel to the tiger, and I think its super cool how such a small detail can do that. I did really like the book, seeing though I'm used to reading big books with tons of words. But even with the lack of words, I felt that it seemed properly able to convey the story to the reader through the amazing art. And again with the eye's of the tiger, I think it properly gets the message across of what no pupils mean in the story. They seem to be an important part of the story. I think other people should check this comic out, if not for the story, then for that art at least.

Tolle Aufmachung.

Love the Tiger by Frederic Brremaud and Federico Bertolucci is a wordless and very short story on a starving tiger who does anything for a bit of food, like attacking other cats and alligators. It was like all of the other animals could eat, but it showed how difficult a tiger has it because they are such a predator. The art style was beautiful with many bright colors and pictures of the forest from afar or up close and I really liked it. In my opinion, for such a short book with no words I liked it because although tigers are my favorite animal and I already love them, it helped me sympathize for them because they have difficulty getting food when so high up on the food chain since everyone and everything is afraid of them.
The plot revolves around a tiger trying to find anything to eat and sadly failing to do so. It had a satisfying resolution because at the end the poor tiger had finally found something to eat. Despite it being a human, it shows that tigers are really beasts that live in the wild and they need food no matter what it is. I recommend this book because it is extremely short but has gorgeous art style and it is nice to see what the outcome was.
