Tom Verbrisser is only 18 years old and already has it all. A rising business empire. The fastest car. The biggest house. The finest clothes. He is also a cat. Oh. Well, that last one wasn't part of the plan. 'Tick' is the first novel from P.J. Leonard, and is the result of a successful Kickstarter campaign from early 2014. Thanks to the huge support, 'Tick' is now open to everyone to dive in in and enjoy... ...just don't forget who you are.

P.J Leonard grew up in Worcester in the UK. He first took an interest in writing in primary school, turning a simple writing project into a 10-page epic, much to the chagrin of the teachers.

He moved to Japan in 2010 and lives there to this day, working in Tokyo by day and writing on packed commuter trains by night.

Full disclosure: I know the author in real life.

What follows is a direct copy-and-paste of my review on Amazon from 2015.

Tick follows Tom as he learns about himself and the effects he has had on others. I bought the book on Tuesday morning and finished it that same night because it flows extremely well -- much better than you would expect from a first-time author's effort. It has a little bit of everything; some threats, some violence, some blood, and even some romance... but I would consider this a great introductory book for any YA reader who is interested in cats or the idea of a hidden world.

One of the greatest things about this book is that it has a solid, satisfying ending; I don't feel like Leonard is toying with my feelings to make me want a sequel, even though I would be thrilled to read another book set in the same world.

The title style and name made me think horror/thriller, which was completely wrong! Another reviewer mentioned Animal Farm and I didn't find that a fitting comparison either; Tick is much lighter and has less biting social commentary. Yes, there are some typological errors that I wish had been cleaned up by publishing, but they weren't devastatingly common. I've seen worse published by Del Rey and Bantam!

If I were to describe Tick by comparison, I would say that it's an urban fantasy story in the vein of The Prince and the Pauper. Once you lose it all, you can find out what you really have.

I received this book free for my honest review.......... This was a very good story, I enjoyed it very much, but as someone else said there was too much "cat" fighting for my taste. It was definitely different from anything I've read before. The ending was really nice and kind of unexpected!
