I really can't say much about this book without giving away major spoilers (even the book name is a big secret until the end), so I'll try to keep this review as short as possible. But hot damn! That was one heck of a roller coaster ride.
And no, it's not what you're thinking at all. This isn't some high-angst book. But the story arc was definitely one of the best I've had the pleasure of reading this year. And that right there is the ticket to the ride of a lifetime which I'm talking about.
In a nutshell, Henry's End unravels Henry Clark's life and his journey towards finding the love of a lifetime. Sounds pretty corny and clichéd when I put it that way, but trust me, this book is anything but.
This has one of the most diverse and multifaceted characters I've met to date. We're talking about personalities which made an impact to Henry's life spanning more than two decades. That's a lot of characters that an author has to think about. And yet, not one of them felt a bit shallow to me. All of them felt real. And it certainly is not a simple feat for an author to accomplish something like that: to leave an intangible mark to their readers through their characters by giving the latter so much heart.
Which is also something that this book did not lack at all. Heart. Henry went through a lot in his life. Every moment, be it good or bad, felt genuinely real. Friendships, heartbreaks, tragedies, achievements, loves, and all big life changes -- in all these moments, I was deeply connected with him. I felt his joy and pain. I empathized and cried (a lot). I was scared witless. And I also craved for his dream.
It felt like I was there in every life-altering moment. Every smile, every tear, every minute detail. Even the hopes he had let his heart and mind go through, I was there. In short, I was touched by his very existence. I was completely moved.
And because of that, it's a no-brainer this book gets all the stars in the world for a rating. Julie A. Richman should write more M/M Romance because seriously, this was just beyond beautiful. Highly recommended for everyone foolish enough to crave for an earth-shattering love to last a lifetime.
“How are we going to run through this one?”
“I wanted to find the other half of me. My Schooner.”
“I think he hates himself because he can’t be the like you. You are everything he doesn’t have the guts to be and he hates that you have the balls and he doesn’t.”
“Arriving at this moment had been a cornerstone of their relationship and when they laid it in the soil, neither could have envisioned the beautiful skyscraper that would grow floor by floor.”
“I just don’t understand how you can put sunshine in a box.”

"We'll run through this."

Henry smiled at Schooner. Just as he had done for his emotionally flailing friend years ago, this time Schooner took the reins, steering Henry back onto the right path, but making him do the hard work to free himself from the darkness. And as Schooner had promised him, once again, the two friends had run through it.
“How am I going to let you get on a plane?” Henry whispered gruffly in his ear. Pulling his face away to look into his violet eyes, Seth shook his head, indicating he didn’t know. Slowly, Henry ran his fore and middle finger down Seth’s cheek and it was in that very moment that Seth Shapiro knew he’d better get his shit together because he would be miserable if he ever lost this man.
