With the rising tide of steam power and machinery, who can come close to being a Beyonder? Shrouded in the fog of history and darkness, who or what is the lurking evil that murmurs into our ears?
Waking up to be faced with a string of mysteries, Zhou Mingrui finds himself reincarnated as Klein Moretti in an alternate Victorian era world where he sees a world filled with machinery, cannons, dreadnoughts, airships, difference machines, as well as Potions, Divination, Hexes, Tarot Cards, Sealed Artifacts…
The Light continues to shine but mystery has never gone far. Follow Klein as he finds himself entangled with the Churches of the world—both orthodox and unorthodox—while he slowly develops newfound powers thanks to the Beyonder potions.
Like the corresponding tarot card, The Fool, which is numbered 0—a number of unlimited potential—this is the legend of "The Fool."
Here is a brief intro to the story. This book was about a guy named Zhou Mingrui who transmigrated (basically isekaied) to a parallel universe. He wakes up as Klein Moretti, a history graduate. He doesn't know why he's there, and he retains all of Klein's memories and is living as him. In this world, there are individuals known as Beyonders who possess special powers. They deal with the supernatural. There are secret factions that use churches as a front, but only those who are part of the beyonder world know of them. Klein, wanting to go back home, eventually seeks this path.
I felt like this was slow. The story itself shows promise, but it wasn’t like I was gripping every page waiting for the next. The last page was the most exciting because now you are anticipating the next book. I guess everything led up to that. There are some parts in the beginning that are never mentioned again that I find very interesting and would have loved to have had more mentions of. Like, really, that whole 300 pages and it wasn’t one week yet? Well, I am going to read on to the next volume because I’m very interested in the lore of the divine paths and the powers of the Beyonders and to see if the MC can find his way back.
I started this after watching season 1 of the show given that it was such an incredible and intricate world with a highly complex magic system so I wanted to learn more. The book does not disappoint in that aspect. I think if anything, the pace in the book is much slower and there are a lot more explanations both about the magic system but also about the world in general (e.g. currency, societal norms, etc). I think the major drawback to the book, and the reason I can't give it more stars, is that the writing is incredibly simplistic. Worldbuilding is done via short, dry dialogue or straightforward exposition paragraphs. It does make it very easy to read and breeze through but it feels like eating junk food where afterwards, you're not quite feeling full or satisfied and you have this sneaking suspicion that you should have made healthier choices.
You can read it for free in web novel. The book literally says it after each chapter. Also this only covers the first 30 chapters which if you watch the anime is not even the first 2 episodes. So save 5 bucks and go to webnovel
Enjoying the extra exposition not provided by anime
Story is good, some translation awkwardness, which I don't mind. The book informs the anime well! Would recommend to anyone watching the anime but needs more exposition
