The Falcon and the Flame

Rate this book
She came to start a revolution. She found a queen worth dying for.

British secret agent Lottie Finch is smart, dangerous and loyal to no one—until she meets the one woman who can bring her to her knees. It’s just Lottie’s luck that woman is also her target.

Sent to infiltrate a royal harem and steer a reluctant princess toward the throne, Lottie is ready to charm, lie, and seduce her way to success—just as she does for every mission—but the Qasira Zynara is no pawn.

Brilliant, guarded, and utterly disinterested in ruling, Zynara has built her life around science and innovation, not politics. The last thing she needs is a flirtatious foreigner with a smirk full of secrets—no matter how gorgeous she is.

A high-stakes battle for the soul of a powerful nation sees Lottie and Zynara dance the razor’s edge between duty and desire—but plotting in the shadows is one mad prince who will stop at nothing to seize the crown.

Falling in love was never part of the plan. It might be the only way to save their lives.

A red-hot, action-packed espionage romance for fans of Killing Eve, Atomic Blonde and Harley Quinn, and for those who know how much better James Bond would be if it was sapphic!

Jolie Dvorak likes to write steamy, angsty romance featuring women who fall hard and love harder. When her first book was released, she revealed that ‘Jolie Dvorak’ was, in fact, the pen name of another sapphic romance author and challenged readers to guess who. This led to some very lovely compliments and quite a few long, funny conversations, but Jolie’s true identity remains a secret. If you think you know, send an email to hello (at) joliedvorak (dot) com with your theories. Gold star if you get it right.

I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it. It was a bit all over the place, but I did love enjoy the bit of action that was in it although I wish there would have been more. Nothing really stuck out to me.

Both MCs didn’t hit any chords for me, but Lottie was cheeky and sassy and I did like the runaround she gave everyone.

I probably won’t read the other book in this series, but don’t regret reading this one!

Come qui, purtroppo.

Occasione davvero persa :(

Boom!
I thought the first book in this series was great... Then The Falcon and the Flame drops!!

This is my kinda book!
Full of sassy humour from Lottie Finch, she's a force to be reckoned with and offers so many laugh out loud moments.

Lottie, who works for The Circle , a secret 🤫 agency run by the Nightingale & The Queen Of England, is full on sexy, sassy, lippy and knows the power of her body... putting it & the skills she's learnt along the way to good use for her country!.

She may be out of her depth this time though when she's sent undercover to try and change the mind of Zynara about abdicating from ruling her country to follow her dreams of creating clean energy for the betterment of the whole planet & handing over control to her spoilt younger brother who's hell bent on making as much money as he can from oil.

Lottie is supposed to seduce Zynara but falls for her mark.
Zynara knows there's something about Lottie she just can't seem to keep away from and enjoys the games they're playing.
Especially when Lottie seems to like being told to be a "Good Girl" 🤪🔥🔥

I'm not normally into the whole spy genre but this series hits the mark for me each time.

I thoroughly enjoy Jolie Dvorak writing style.. it's well thought out & flows perfectly.

Added to my top 10 for this year..... Adding physical as soon as it's realised!

Another masterpiece!

As expected, this book was just amazing! The story flows just right, there was enough spicy steamy scenes but they were not dragged into eternity so I didn’t skip any of it which happens to me quite a lot with other authors. Amazing characters that were deep and well-thought through. At the beginning, Lottie wade me crunch my teeth with her cockiness, idiotic carelessness and overall havoc without thinking it through but the longer I read, the more I realised that Lottie’s psyche is well thought through and everything she does has a reason behind it which is something Jolie Dvorak does with all her characters and I simply love her for it! I could only wish to write like her one day! This is a great book but I wouldn’t expect any less. This will definitely be one of the few books I will splurge on to get a paper copy that I have nowhere to put in my tiny flat.

What I really love about this series is, that the main characters are, initially, sexually attracted to one another but as the story progresses they start to be interested in getting to know each other as well. I absolutely adore Zynara and Lottie is a very good match for her. Dvorak, again, created a believable Lovestory and the backdrop of this one is gorgeous!
I'd say the pacing is rather fast and the story itself is very feminist and very sapphic.

Holy crap, holy crap, holy crap! This book *sigh* this book is just everything I’ve ever wanted out of a James Bond/Ocean’s 8 film franchise but SAPPHIC!!!

The power, the seduction (Ohhhh, the seduction), the games, the action, the outright flamboyancy of the spectacularly ‘fantastic-ness’ of this book is just legendary and I’m living for every lust-inducing, spine tingling bit of it.

Lottie Finch is a member of the Circle (the Queen’s personal intelligence agency) ruled by The Nightingale (book one, and if you haven’t read that, do so. RIGHT FUCKING NOW). A spy with all the skills, all the ego and a habit for overshooting (pun intended) the assignment *just* a little, she finds herself at the heart of her next mission, seducing the Qasira of Ain Zargiers to try and convince her to take the throne and shove aside her megalomaniac, sociopathic younger brother.

Said Qasira, (Zynara) an incredibly intelligent, super nerd for all things electrical and eco friendly has done some wonderful things for her country but has spurned the title of Q’sar (Queen). Will Lottie be able to convince her to take the crown? Will they be able to resist the magnetic pull between them? Will all their secrets be revealed and hearts remain intact?

These women are absolute fire. Lottie is everything a super spy should be. Lethal, seductive, charming, quick witted and sassy as hell. Zynara is captivated instantly. They fall together like teeth on a zipper closing. Completely matching each other’s desires.

The adventure and drama of these set of books is wonderful. Just when I thought I could see where things were headed, bam, an explosion and my arse was firmly spun and planted in the opposite direction. (sadly, minus a domineering ice queen!)

Overall, I could simp over this book for days, but, there would be spoilers and an embarrassing amount of drooling over both Lottie (her secret agent skills are dazzling) and Zynara (her dominance…. Bites knuckle and lets out one singular tear) equally. So, I’ll leave it to say that you need to read this book. Preferably, after The Nightingale and the Rose, although, not compulsory but definitely to get the best experience. And I mean the BEST experience. (See, here I go again!)

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

In this intense romantic thriller, Dvorak captures my heart again with a story that offers great entertainment and excellent characters. As usual, witty banter and some (very) spicy scenes push the MCs toward each other and they get to fight the bad guys and save the world together.
The skillful writing sweeps you away to a fictional country and portrays the most alluring setting for romance. The suspense is just as engaging as the romance and provides an outlet for all the high energy coming off of the MCs.

I loved the scenery and the cultural descriptions. Despite it being fictional, it felt real and authentic. It was like looking into a “what if” scenario where Morocco (or a country very similar to it) is secular, liberal, and leads the world toward green energy through sophisticated tech and plenty of sustainable natural resources.
I loved this alternative history. I loved that it showcases a valid alternative to today’s technology, economy, and politics. I loved how important it is to the MCs and their support network. I think it came off as quite realistic, considering contemporary advances in technology. This kind of realism is so rare when presented with a fictional country and alternative history of the region… so I gotta say Well Done to the author 🙂
It is quite a feat to turn an erotic thriller romance into environmental and political commentary but Dvorak actually made it happen and didn’t miss even a tiny bit of humor that adds to the overall entertainment. Kudos!

If this is not clear yet, I highly recommend this book.

This is a sequel to The Nightingale and the Rose. It could be read as a stand alone but you should read them both - and in order, to get the most from it.
It's a spy thriller involving The Circle - with Lottie (a circle agent) tasked with getting the Quasira of Ain Zargiers ( a fictional commonwealth country) to reinstate herself in the succession to the throne. The Quasira is a scientist involved with green energy. Lottie is tasked to infiltrate the harem and go from there.
It is funny, action packed, and there is a male character who wants power that has surrounded himself with everything gold. Yes - a gold super yacht, a gold palace, gold toilet etc. It will come as no surprise to find out that he does not play by the rules and is ruthless in his quest for power and money. He is not into green energy and is pushing everything petroleum.

Lottie is funny as well as a gifted agent and soon has the Quasira enjoying her company.

There is a fair amount of action - explosions, fast cars, etc

There is of course an epilogue. This mirrors an earlier scene and shows how life progresses.

Amusingly, when I reviewed the first book in this series, I complained that there was no explanation in the book why they didn't just shoot the baddie.

The author may have read that, as she gives a reason in the first three chapters. Wonder if she read my review?

The Circle have sent Lotte and Bili to Ain Zargiers, a Arabian state ruled by cousins of the Queen, to prevent shitty Prince Malik from taking the throne, and get Princess Zynara to instead.

(Evelyn Knight knew Zynara when they were younger, which does make me wonder why they didn't just tell her.)

Lotte catches Zynara's eye, and after some mishaps beds her. But as they get to know each other Lotte realizes she has a lot going on, which draws her to her even more.

Good read! Loved the characters, good mix of humor and serious. 4 out of 5 stars.

We have a female author of wlw books that are better than Ian Fleming's James Bond stories. All the snaibsel who grew up reading or watching the sexist character of 007 who craved that one day that character could be female, AND a naibsel. We have been granted that wish in Jolie Dvorak's first in a series: The Nightingale And The Rose and now with this second book The Falcon And The Flame. There is plenty of action intrigue wlw sex and wonderful advanced technology that would put the states to shame because it is so ahead of the curve. What else should we expect from a woman who has chosen the last name of a Czech composer who was so ahead of his time in the late 1890's, and a first name that means pretty in French.

Ms Dvorak has done it again.

The story is fast paced, thrilling, engaging and sooo steamy! Everything you expect from this wonderful author. The MCs in this story, Zynara and Lotti are amazing and have a lot of depth to them.

If you have read The Nightingale and the Rose (if you haven’t you really should!) you will recognise some of the peripheral characters. Having said that you don’t need to have read it to understand this book.

Do yourself a massive favour and go and get this book, I know you will not regret it at all! Also pick up the Nightingale and the Rose so you get a doubly dose from this incredible author.

Fantastic

All books by this author are really terrific, different, interesting stories and this one lives up to the others and perhaps more. Wonderful characters abound, especially the magnificent Qsar of the new country that we are drawn into, there's, vile people, there's 🔥 ones especially our two mcs, phew, you can't help but be drawn into the story and don't want it to end but end it must as we look forward to the next great tale from this writer. We are teased by the fact that it's not her real name and I still haven't figured it out. Oh well, I don't really care just keep writing.

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!

What a home run! Although the Nightingale was wonderful, this second installment was over the top GENIUS! The buildup of the main FMC’s relationship was utter joy, and constant swoons. Their connection was sincerely riveting! The cheek, the drama, the storyline, this book was all around STUNNING. The writing was top notch. The stream was STEAMY, and the book overall was an absolute beautiful ride and a total win! Again, just absolutely BRILLIANT!

"The Nightingale and the Rose" was better and I believe if that sweet baby had not been mentioned in the way that she was in this book, I would have enjoyed this one a bit more. I am static like that. I simply can't stand it when someone badmouths my ice queens. Nope.

Overall, the plot is really good, it reminded me of Fast and Furious 7, the one when they were in Dubai; that is how it was in my head.

Oh My God! Freaking Fantastic.

The first book in this series was so good I was holding my breath in hopes for this second one. Well OMG it is so freaking fantastic it has blown me away! I don't think it can beat the first but it has sure equalled it. What an amazing story. What incredible writing. Humor and horror, flirting and fury, and many many kinds of love. You just have to read this!

so goooood

I was so sad when this ended! The first one was amazing and this one was equally as good. The spice was excellent and not over done. The story read well and the characters were extremely entertaining! I found myself laughing out loud many times. Although there was no major upset or drama between the MCs. Which was actually a nice change of pace. Hopefully there will be more. Maybe Ace? ;)

The first chapter really drew me in, but ultimately, I was left pretty disappointed. One major reason I couldn’t connect with the story was Lottie, one of the main characters. She comes off as overly pushy and arrogant, with no regard for personal boundaries—and not in a charming or endearing way.

That said, I do love Jolie Dvorak’s writing style, and I’m still excited to check out her other work.

Delicious

Oh, how I loved this classic and cool futuristic, yet cultural romcom romp! The second installment to me was even better than the first. The two characters are magnetic together, and I loved the mix of comedy, drama, angst and off the charts steamy love scenes. I had so much fun reading this. I’m actually going to miss the characters now that I’ve completed the book, but the beauty of it is that I can go back and read it again! Well done!

I really enjoyed Nightingale but this one pulled me in more. I felt like I was back in Morocco and the Atlas Mts. I enjoyed the spy craft and the eco. development by the 2 MCs.
I need to say that Dvorak’s excellent writing feels very familiar to me (as another author)but I can’t figure out who she is. Either way I know I enjoy reading both and look forward to more.

Jolie Dvorak has done it so well. Shes linked the previous characters with more spies and networks. The dialogue with the Arabian Princess is both deep and witty. Imagine this as the next Bond movie in its own right. Inspiring.
