He lives by the rules. She’ll break every one of them.

Wren Hackett should be on top of the world. She’s the star of a popular renovation TV show and dating her longtime crush and co-star, Jude. While their on-screen romance had been planned, she’s crushed when he rejects the idea of it ever becoming real. With the next season of the show rapidly approaching and the network demanding she keep up appearances, Wren is desperate to find a way out of pretending to be in love with the man who broke her heart. When small-town rumors swirl around her and the shy local doctor, she realizes there’s no better way to get over a fake relationship than to get right into another one.

Henry Connor enjoys his quiet life in Strawberry Springs. Everyone thinks he’s cool, calm, and collected—and so long as he follows his carefully curated routines and rules, they always will. But when a strawberry blonde starlet crashes into his life and pulls him into the spotlight, Henry feels his control slipping. His biggest fear? Showing the parts of himself he’s tried so hard to hide … and falling for the strong, beautiful woman who is definitely way out of his league.

As things heat up both on and off camera, Wren and Henry realize that neither can play the part they’re supposed to. Will they cling to who they’ve been told to be, or will they realize that they can trust each other to be themselves just as they are?

As They Are is a small-town, fake-dating romance novel with the found family trope, set in the town of Strawberry Springs. It is the second in a series of interconnected standalone novels.

I would like to preface this by saying I got this book as an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC)!

When I heard this was going to be a fake dating on fake dating I was a little skeptical. Things like that can get very complicated very quickly and very confusing if not done correctly. The concept was done so well that I couldn’t put the book down! Wren and Henry have my whole heart. The representation of autism, though slightly cliche, was a nice change of pace for a romance novel. I appreciated the way it was discussed and how the towns people rallied around Henry because of it.

I also appreciated the way trauma was shown in the relationship between Wren and Henry. Though the characters got over some things more quickly than in real life it still felt like the author put thought into how it was portrayed. As opposed to others I have read where the main character gets over trauma or PTSD in a day because of love.

Though an odd beginning to their relationship, I thought the growth Wren and Henry had was true to the characters. Spice overall in this book is I’d say a 3/5.

Overall I thought the book was good! Was it my favourite trope, no, but will I come back to re read it at some point? Probably. I really liked the first book I read from Elle Rivers a bit more. Though this novel had more depth I just can’t stop thinking about contractual obligations. This one is definitely top 10 for romance though!

omg, first let me start off by thanking Elle for giving me an ARC. I absolutely DEMOLISHED this book and left no crumbs i loved this book so much!! It was the perfect book to get me out of my two month long book slump when i felt like there was no hope left for me.

It had the perfect amount of plot, romance, smut and found family. I enjoyed this book so much and going along with Wren and Henry on their journey from what started as fake dating to something more and beautiful. I’m a huge sucker for a health rec so hearing Henry had autism and how welcoming and sweet Wren was made my tear him at every word. I was constantly on the verge of tears and so happy for all these characters the way Wren and Henry support each other through the hardest parts of life was something’s so special and moving to see, I especially loved to see the sense of community and how welcome Wren felt she deserved to have people love her and support her and be there for her no matter what.

Tropes
- fake dating
- found family
- doctor x construction worker
- tv star
- jealousy trope
- 🌶️

Henry is also fine asf i need a man like him asap (he wears glasses) #hotnerd

if i could rate this 10 stars i would

Thank you to Elle and Literary Rising for the ARC!

As you can see by my dates, I absolutely DEVOURED this book. I know I said As It Was was my new favorite book of Elle’s, but it’s actually without a doubt this one.

I don’t even know where to begin! I’m usually not the biggest fan of the fake dating trope because it just downright confuses me on a good day, so it made me giggle so much to see it confuse Henry in the same way. I practically LEPT with joy when I heard that there was autistic rep in this book, and it warmed my heart so much reading about Henry because our thought processes are so similar! And to see Wren love him so openly and unashamedly for it made me cry more often than I’ll admit. I’ve wanted more autistic characters in novels in general for a long time, and Henry is a fantastic addition.

Oh, Wren. Lovely Wren. I related to her story far more than I will get into, and while I expected to, I didn’t expect the absolute emotional rollercoaster I’d be taken on. It was just as healing to read as it was heartbreaking.

Everything about it is exactly what I needed to read right now, and I can’t wait for everyone to experience it!

(And, per usual with an Elle Rivers book, the sex scenes were AMAZING and flowed so well and were characterized perfectly!)

I received an advanced reader copy of this book, much to my delight as I was a huge fan of the first book in the series. Elle Rivers continues her story of Strawberry Springs in grand form. The story was fun and had plenty of moments that kept me engaged, making it a real page turner. Most of all, though, the characters are EVERYTHING. Every citizen of Strawberry Springs felt lively and like able. This book especially made me a huge Tammy fan. The romance too is absolutely amazing. Henry and Wren are adorable and only get cuter as the book continues. Overall, great story, amazing characters, and some really good lessons about accepting love and help from others. I’m loving this series!!

As They Are completely blew me away. I was hooked from the very beginning and couldn’t put it down—Wren and Henry’s story took me on an emotional roller coaster in the best possible way.

Elle does such an incredible job portraying mental health and life on the spectrum with honesty and care. It made the characters feel so real and relatable. I truly loved every minute of this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a heartfelt, impactful read.

Now I want to read everything Elle has written! 🤍

She did it again 🤩
It is all that I look for in a good small town romance book.
Like the way Henry was portrayed and how he handled his difficulties to be there for wren.
And the way wren accepted him as he is.

I am completely head over heels in love with Henry. He is the sweetest most adorable man ever, I just wanted to constantly hug him 🥺

I thought Wren and Henry were perfect for each other. Both had their own quirks but they didn’t need to change to be together and it was beautiful.

This whole book was super adorable and I loved being back in Strawberry Springs.

Thank you to Elle and Literary Rising for the ARC!

I was thrilled when I was chosen to receive an ARC of this book. I loved the first installment, and devoured it in days. I was worried it would be a standalone and not be made into a series, and I am so glad I was wrong.

I can tell you until I'm blue in the face that I don't like the fake-dating trope, but I would be lying. I love it so much I EAT IT UP. Wren and Henry's romance starts off on good terms for fake dating. I love that Elle made it so it wasn't a forced and hated fake dating, because their relationship was so sweet and it wouldn't have the same effect if it was a hated fake dating.

I love love love the autism representation in Henry, it made me feel so seen, as I'm sure it did for others. I hope that everyone who reads this will come away understanding autism a bit more. I would have loved to see more aspects of it, and I'm sure in future books it will as Henry will for sure make an appearance.

I can't say too much without spoiling everything, so I'll just leave you with this:
Your diagnosis doesn't define if you are worthy of certain things. The right people will love you for who you are and accomodate you when necessary.
Your past doesn't define who you will always be.

(btw: I read the first book in this series months ago and totally called that this was going to be about Wren and the doctor.)

I am a stickler for a valid fake-dating situation, and this book passed the test. I also really enjoyed the representation and how they both made efforts to accommodate and be there for each other. However, I think Wren and Henry were both pretty complex characters who had a lot of things they needed to work through because of their past, which we did not see enough of for such a long book. This book also did a lot of telling rather than showing to the point where it felt like Wren was trying to convince me (the reader) of what she was saying instead of actually realizing. I also got annoyed with how insecure both were towards the end and the whole 3rd act situation because I felt it took away from the growth that happened throughout the book.

This book is the second in the Strawberry Springs series, and I am looking forward to the next one (calling Kelsey and Theo now).

Wren was someone I loved seeing from Mollie’s in the first book so when she got to have her own book, I was over the moon. What a wonderfully complex character she is. There are many layers to Wren that take time to unfold but the patience is so worth it. She’s closed off and understandably so with the events of her past. What I could totally empathise with was how hard she tries to mask it all. She seems so happy and bubbly on the outside but there is a storm raging underneath. I can completely empathise with that which is probably why I love her as a character.
Henry is such a sweetheart and I would just adore to have someone like him around. It’s the way he takes in the little details and focuses on the pains and annoyances of everyone else before his own. He pushes himself to do better which is incredibly unnecessary because he is brilliant just the way he is. His little gestures of kindness mean the world and anyone is lucky to have him, that’s for sure.

Now I loved the first book in this series and when I saw that Wren’s story was next, I was very excited. Then I saw this was a fake dating story? SOLD! The plot of this story is fantastic. I loved the continuation of the small town gossip mill with each chapter, offering humour and a different perspective on things unfolding in the town. The inclusion of Autism and lower mental health was fantastic. I felt they were handled with care and consideration, not polarising or stereotypical - which is incredibly important. I loved that we got to see so many familiar faces here mixed in with the new ones. The fact we get to look into the backstories of previous faces is even better in my eyes! There was such a wonderful camaraderie here that I couldn’t help but smile at. The romance was simply chef’s kiss! I’m a sucker for fake dating and live for the moment when the couple catch feels for each other. What I particularly enjoyed here was the fact that there were so many emotions here but also an incredible level of trust that meant the romance was entirely swoon worthy! There wasn’t a huge amount of spice here but what we got was wonderful! Again, the emotions here just made the spicy moments absolutely stellar - grounding the characters but also allowing me to believe what the characters were feeling - and it was hot! The ending was absolute perfection. The way Rivers writes her endings are great because they allow for closure on this story whilst setting us up for the next. Brilliant!

Overall, As They Are is a fantastic sequel for this series. I’m excited to see where it will go next!

thank you to elle and literary rising for the arc

I saw a short part of this book on tiktok and thought why not try to get an arc so here we are!
I liked the small town vibes and the beginning really had me: wren and henry were so sweet and their honesty with each other was really refreshing. henry as well, this is a man who has gone to therapy, my god, I loved the way he communicated <3

their whole excuse for fake dating was actually believable and these two had chemistry! I loved how henry was willing to help her and I really felt for him trying to constantly adjust and fit in. he was a 10/10 gentleman the whole time and the way he protected wren and put boundaries in for her when she struggled ahhh. I think having an insight into his autism really helped understand him, although I wish we had seen more of his ex best friends.

I loved how once wren starts to notice how he struggles sometimes she's immediately there to help and try to make it better for him. the understanding on her part was so good, especially since he didn't have it before. their protective dynamic of each other was heartwarming <3

"Hey, buttercup." The pet name slipped out, but I told myself it was because I was wearing the mic. "What's going on?" "I just need this," she said, her face pressed into my shirt.

I hung my head, wishing more than anything that I didn't need to be in this closet. She stepped forward and pulled my head down to her shoulder. One ear was pressed into her neck, and her hand moved to the other momentarily as if she was moving to run her hands through my hair. I grabbed her hand and left it there.

circling back to the honesty, it was truly one of the best parts of this book. I loved how they talked with each other and went from just a one time thing to more without trying to hide how they felt. the only part this book really felt flat to me was when the town cheesyness started to be a much and in regards to her mom. I think the town's envolvement could've been more emphasised in the book and not just in the group chats, because suddenly wren and tammy were bonding in a way that felt rushed.

also, the third act misunderstanding on wren's part was just annoying and it went against everything we had been building in regards to that trust. bringing the mom back just so she can say some bullshit (which why the hell is she like this?) and have wren abandon everything when they had been so good at communicating until then made me frustrated. I was glad they went after her and I get that she has a lot of insecurities regarding that but from the trust we built upon I expected better.

overall, their romance was super sweet with all the small little things he did and their honesty with one another. the library redecoration was super nice as well and the small town descriptions were really good, I just wish some parts weren't as cheesy and that that last misunderstanding didn't happen and the backgrounds on both mc's were better developed.

Elle Rivers has done it again! As They Were is a perfect blend of sweet, funny, steamy, and emotionally resonant. I couldn’t put it down—the prologue had me hooked instantly, and I couldn’t rest until I knew Wren, our fierce and lovable FMC, got the happily ever after she so deserves.

This is book 2 in the Strawberry Springs series, and it follows Wren—Mollie’s best friend—as she returns to town after her home renovation show hits a snag during its first season. She's hoping for a breather, but “rest” isn't exactly in Wren's vocabulary. Instead, with some encouragement (and maybe a little emotional support) from Henry, the town’s doctor, she brings her show to Strawberry Springs to renovate the abandoned library. Of course, things get messy when the showrunner pressures her into fake dating her co-star—and Wren counters by fake dating Henry instead. Sparks fly, obviously.

I had mixed feelings about the townspeople in book 1, but they totally redeemed themselves here. Their trademark gossip isn’t used to tear anyone down—it’s weaponized in the best way to support Henry and Wren. I especially adored Tammy—her quiet support and insight into Wren’s struggles made their scenes together some of my favorites.

Henry is an absolute gem of a MMC. Sweet, thoughtful, and incredibly caring, he goes out of his way for Wren, even when it disrupts his carefully structured routine. I thought the autistic rep was thoughtfully done—it reflects the reality of someone diagnosed in adulthood, with traits like routine-based coping, sensory sensitivity, and passionate special interests (gardening!).

Wren is strong, determined, and deeply human. She’s navigating some emotionally heavy challenges, and eventually was able to reach out—leaning on Mollie, Henry, and the community when needed. The emotional connection between Wren and Henry is everything —they’re so attuned to each other’s needs, and their gestures of love and care feel deeply genuine rather than transactional.

The pacing is just right—not too fast, not too slow—and the story flows so smoothly that it’s easy to devour in one sitting (which I absolutely did!). Every chapter pulled me in deeper, and there were no lulls or draggy moments.

And the spice? OMG. Henry might be sweet in public, but behind closed doors? Whew. 🔥

If you love stories with heart, heat, and small-town charm, As They Were is a must-read. I already can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Pick this book up if you like:
🍀 small-town romance
🌼 found family
🌸 fake dating
🌹 strong FMC x cinnamon roll MMC
💐 autistic rep

I discovered Elle through "Contractual Obligations" and "Ill Will", and I'm so glad I stayed for more. I read "As It Was" just before this, so I was hungry for more of this beautiful small town.

Both Wren and Henry have their own problems, that initially they continue to bury, and it's just a matter of time everything comes to the surface. I enjoyed the fact their issues weren't immediately resolved just because they meet each other, and it takes real work on both sides to come to the realization that maybe normal is overrated, and it's perfectly fine to find accommodations so that your life feels good.

I enjoyed the town's camaraderie and "all for one" attitude. Kerry is definitely growing on me, she's getting her gossipiness under some reins compared to the first instalment.

"As They Are" is taking us back to the cosy town of Strawberry Springs, but don't be fooled - it covers a lot of difficult subjects, including child abandonment, autism in adults, and more. Be prepared to face a bit of a fake dating here as well, but it is done very well in my opinion.

I'll definitely be on the lookout for the next one, can't wait to get back to this world.

Dare I say that I enjoyed this book more than the first one?

This book’s main characters, Wren (the TV star & home renovator from Nashville) and Henry (small town doctor) were memorable in a way that isn’t common for me.

It was so great to see the characters from the first book, with their plot moving forward but not taking the spotlight away from Wren and Henry. Even though it’s the second in the series and has overlapping characters, it can be read as a standalone.

I’d highly recommend for anyone looking for a romance in which they validate and love each other, “flaws” and all. The small town’s odd/fun characters are just the cherry on top.

🖤 Thank you to author Elle Rivers and Literary Rising for the digital advanced reader copy. As always, my reviews are honest, my own, and voluntary.

I am so thankful for the Advance Reader Copy of As They Are 🌸🌹

Tropes to expect:
👨‍⚕️Doctor in a small town
👷‍♀️Construction Reality TV Star
🧠Autistic/Neurodivergent MMC
💙FAKE Dating
🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒Found Family
🍓Small Town
🏘️Meddlesome Facebook Group

Wren finds herself in Strawberry Springs to reconnect with her best friend following a disappointment by her co-star. She meets the shy small town doctor by chance on her first day in town. Wren and Henry bond quickly considering each other friends. When Wren is pushed to maintain a romantic facade with the costar for the sake of her show, she impulsively opts to fake date Henry instead.

Henry is neurodivergent and thrives on routine and calm, which Wren is not. Their dynamic is sweet and supportive throughout. We see the growth in both characters while they process previous traumas that shape their present reactions.
🌶️ Open door spice and I’ll just say Henry isn’t as shy as he seems 😅
I loved the balance between them 💕

****ARC READER****

This book, it took me a bit to read, (no fault of the author or book.) but when I started this, I thought oh another fake dating, and then I actually got pulled into it and went OOOOH.

The fake dating, was part of this but the trials, the autism rep, the way the entire town supports Wren and Henry no matter what is really how found family works! The town, the people this book made my week!

the way Elle writes her characters and brings them to life is so good! The journey these two go through? Is just slightly heartbreaking but so goooood! I LOVED this!

I haven’t read the first book, but with finishing this one? It’s gonna be a fun journey I can already tell and I can’t wait for the next book! It’s good! I can’t wait to revisit Strawberry Springs.

Not ashamed to admit that I basically leapt out of bed when I received this ARC! I devoured this book in record time and I didn’t just read it, I inhaled it, and it left me buzzing with joy, tears, and a little bit of heartbreak.

The heartfelt plot, swoony romance, steamy moments, and sense of found family. Following Wren and Henry as their fake dating arrangement slowly turned into something deeper was such a delight. Watching Henry get as hilariously confused by fake dating had me grinning like crazy, and his LIST 😭😭

Henry absolutely stole my heart. Learning that he was autistic representation in this story made me so happy and it was handled with such tenderness and authenticity. Reading his perspective felt familiar in so many ways, and watching Wren love and accept him fully, without hesitation, had me in tears more than once.
And let’s be honest: Henry in glasses? Peak hot. I need one of him in my life.

And then there’s Wren. Sweet, resilient Wren. I connected to her journey much more deeply than I expected to. Her emotional highs and lows were written so vividly that I felt everything right along with her. Seeing her find acceptance, love, and a real sense of belonging was just as healing for me as it was for her.

The way Wren and Henry showed up for each other through the toughest parts of their lives was moving and unforgettable. And Henry realising he was in love with Wren through flower? Could he get anymore perfect 💐

I absolutely adored this book. I thoroughly loved book 1 and I loved this one just as much.

I absolutely loved Wren, hated Jude and I loved Henry, I really really related to him, especially with his Autism and it was so nice to see such a realistic representation in the books! It's even made me think, maybe I should start using my earplugs more out and about to stop me getting tired.

The story was beautiful, the sense of community was brilliant, reading the developing love between Henry and Wren was EVERYTHING. But Wrens mother is a cold hearted bitch and I hate her.

Highly recommend this book!!!

If you know me, you know fake dating is one of my favourite tropes if well made. This one? Is one of the best I’ve read in a while.

I loved the humour in it, the found family (another trope I love), and the development of their feelings for each other. The spicy scenes were on point, not too many or too few and hot enough to make me want a Henry for myself. Side question, does anyone know where can I get a Herny? Please and thank you!

Back to our program now. The found family in this book is what I image a small town is like. Everyone knows everyone, they’re constantly in each other’s business (on the facebook group, how else?) and they protect and have each other’s best interests at heart. They were funny and at times clueless but you know they had good intentions.

Overall, I gave this book 5 ⭐️ and I’m sad that it’s over.

Thank you Literary Rising and Elle for the opportunity to read this ARC and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

I was lucky to get this as an ARC thanks to Elle and Literacy Rising.

I have read a lot of Elles books and I have really enjoyed them all, this was no different. I started reading it as soon as I got the email but having no doubt it was going to be another amazing read I then decided to save it to read on holiday. Henry and Wrens story was beautifully written.

I love all the characters in Strawberry Springs and how they come together as a community and be there for one another. I love how supportive Tammy is to Wren.

Wren and Henry are such loveable characters, they have chemistry from the beginning and they are well suited and good for each other. The spicy scenes were well written and the story flowed well.

Elle portrayed Autism and the challenges people on the spectrum face well. It was handled with care and compassion.

I am hoping there is going to be a book 3 and another trip to Strawberry Springs!

ARC REVIEW

4.5/5 stars

I felt so many things reading this book. I felt attacked which, to me, means this book was very well written (and also ow lol). We have autistic representation and complicated family dynamics which I think were well done. You know what else we have represented? An “unconventionally” attractive female main character. Wren is absolutely jacked and so, so gorgeous. Anybody who actually thinks that’s unconventional doesn’t deserve her. Henry deserves to have been accommodated for a lot longer than he has been (nobody deserves to be treated like they weren’t worth the effort of understanding). OUR MAIN CHARACTERS ARE TO DIE FOR AND THEY BOTH DESERVE THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD. I would kill for them. Anywayyyyys, it is a slowburn, sort of. Legally, it’s a slow burn but it’s fake dating, yanno? They will literally do anything for each other, no questions asked. Super sweet. That being said, who wants to guess the number of annotations I have in this one? Any guesses? No? 1038. THAT’S SO MANY. A lot of my annotations are along the lines of “cute,” “sweet,” “hot doctor voice,” telling our main characters that I am adopting them, and absolutely berating the ever loving shit out of evil characters lol (I’m ready to square tf up). So if any of those things intrigue you, I think you should totally try it out. Oh also there are a bunch of Mollie, Cain, and Eric cameos (those are the main characters from the first Strawberry Springs book). Now, what you’ve all been waiting to hear, the smut portion (just kidding, we’re all here for the yearning, the smut is just a perk). But the sex is genuinely so well done. Definitely as spicy if not even more spicy than book one. I personally kept calling Henry “Dr. Feelgood” because I thought it was funny and so very fitting. This book had me giggling and kicking my feet, unable to put it down because they’re just too cute. And traumatized but that’s not my current point. That being said, if you are also deeply traumatized, I would recommend reading the trigger warnings ahead of time because there are a lot of heavy topics in here (I cried, but like, what else is new?). I know I’m talking in circles at this point but I feel as though this series is going to quickly turn into a new comfort series for me. It’s just so cute I can totally see myself revisiting it in the not-so-distant future. ESPECIALLY FOR MY ELDERLY GAYS. I love them dearly, I can’t believe it took me until right now to mention them. I’m personally as invested in side characters as I am in the main characters if you couldn’t tell lol. They’re all so fleshed out that they feel real and every new book in the series fleshes them out even more. Love that. So I hope you enjoy the second book set in Strawberry Springs as much as I did! :)

Coming off the high of a successful renovation TV show and the crash of a failed PR relationship, Wren escapes the chaos of show business by visiting her friend in Strawberry Springs. But being the busy-body she is, she quickly finds herself with two new projects: reviving the town’s abandoned library and spending time with a kind doctor who will do anything for her. They agree to fake a relationship for the cameras, but somewhere along the way, the line between pretend and real starts to blur….and maybe the biggest project of all is building a future together.

“It’s just you, Wren. You’re what I love. You don’t need to do anything to earn it or keep it. You just have it.”

Coming back to Strawberry Springs is a true homecoming. This series makes you want to sit back, relax, and enjoy a nice and calming read. It’s a found family gem that is wholesome, kooky, and yet oh so endearing. The romance in this was real, heartfelt and put butterflies in my stomach.

Henry was so baby boy, oh my God. I loved this man and wanted to protect him so bad. I adored the way Henry was written, as a respectful, charismatic, and overall QUALITY MAN. Honestly, the autism rep was done beautifully and showcased how you can be fully functioning and have a (rather spicy) love life despite the stereotype of being different. His devotion to Wren was beautiful and so was their love.

And Wren was the quintessential big town to small town FMC with a heart of gold. I actually really liked how she adjusted into the town, never looking down at anyone or thinking she’s above them despite her celebrity status. She was down to Earth, so reasonable and easy going. And huge shoutout to her understanding of Henry’s autism and willingness to adapt her habits and behaviours to accommodate him made me love her even more. A true sweetheart to the max.

““There are a lot of things that are just for you,” I said softly, leaning down to kiss her.”

There’s just something so endearing about the folks at Strawberry Springs. It’s a community in its truest form and brings this sense of nostalgia for the smaller things in life. Seeing Mollie and Cain live out their happy lives is also such a highlight, they were truly adored by many including myself. I even love the town group chats, Kerry’s nosey ways, Hugh’s unhinged old man hijinx. It’s a small town romance done right, written with love and finished with perfection and Elle Rivers brings her A game to every instalment that she releases.

I received an ARC of As They Are by Elle Rivers, and all thoughts and fangirling are my own ;)

Though it was nearly impossible, the entire earth warmed up in her presence, and I was sure I was about to get burned if I stood too close to her.

I will always shout praises for Elle Rivers. Her books heal a little bit of my heart every time I read them. I absolutely love her writing style and how she balances her characters being total baddies while still having vulnerability. Her writing brings a sense of realism that is so refreshing.

I am a sucker for fake dating, so when I saw this trope list, I was a goner.

🔨 fake dating
🪻 shy MMC
🔨 chaotic FMC
🪻 mutual pining
🔨 found family
🪻 autistic rep

Each chapter opens with a Facebook group excerpt, and let me tell you that was one of my favorite parts. If you grew up in a small town, you know the Facebook groups are wild, and boy, did Elle Rivers capture that perfectly! It really added to the small-town charm and the found family aspect of the book in a layer I did not know I needed.

The fake dating had me squealing and kicking my feet (RIP to those who saw my video and were wearing headphones). My favorite quote was when Henry internally called her 'My Wren'. It was sooo good.

My favorite thing about this book was the autistic rep. I always get a little worried when there is a labeled autistic character because I've been burned before, and as someone with autstim, I am pretty critical of it. I borrowed worry for nothing because this rep was AMAZING. The need for structure, the intense fear of having a meltdown around people, it was beautiful.

Overall, this story has warmed its way into my heart and healed me in certain ways I can't tell you about because spoilers.

Highly recommended, I had the time of my life, 5 stars!

I just finished As They Are and I’m still swooning. Elle Rivers has officially cemented herself as my go-to for small-town romance with heart, humor, and characters that feel like friends.

Wren Hackett is everything I love in a heroine, she’s fierce, vulnerable, and refreshingly real. Watching her navigate the fallout of a fake relationship while trying to keep her career afloat was both heartbreaking and empowering. And then there’s Henry Connor. Oh, Henry. The quiet, rule-following doctor who slowly unravels in the most tender, beautiful way. Their chemistry between them was instantaneous. But what really got me was the emotional depth and how both characters had to confront who they were told to be versus who they truly are.

One of the most touching aspects of their relationship is how Henry shows his love through quiet, intentional gestures. He brings Wren flowers, each with a specific meaning, each a message he struggles to say aloud. He checks in to make sure she’s eating, sleeping, breathing through the chaos. Protective without being possessive, gentle without being passive. And Wren meets him right there. She sees him. She accepts his misophonia and autism without trying to fix or soften him. She offers support, space, and understanding in a way that feels deeply earned and beautifully portrayed.

The fake-dating trope is one of my favorites, and Rivers nails it. But she also weaves in found family, mental health, and the pressure of public personas with such grace. Strawberry Springs feels like a place I want to move to immediately. I laughed, I cried, I highlighted like crazy.

If you love slow-burn romance with genuine emotional stakes and a hero who’s quietly devastating, As They Are is a must-read. I already miss Wren and Henry.

A huge thank you to Elle Rivers and Literary Rising PR for the early copy!

After the first one in the series, I had my hopes up for the second, AND IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT.

If you read 'As It Was', I'm sure you missed Strawberry Springs as much as I did (or maybe more). I think this was the one to make me fall irrevocably in love with this small town and all of it's different characters.

Wren is the star of a famous TV show 'Renovate With Love', and she was happy with her work. Until she wasn't. When her co-star breaks her heart, she needs a change.

There's just a small detail: bad luck seems to hunt her down. So, on her way to Strawberry Springs, she needs to change her tyre. And that's when she meets the charming Dr. Henry Connor. (I wouldn't call it BAD luck...)

Henry has a routine he needs to maintain in order to uphold his reputation in town. He enjoys his quiet life. However, he can't stop thinking about the gorgeous, captivating woman he met at the side of the road.

When destiny seems to push them towards each other, and Wren finds herself in need to escape her current fake relationship, it seems obvious what the solution was: fake date Henry.

But what happens when the line between fake and real blurs? What happens when a kiss turns into more?

Well... in this case, we get a cute, steamy, heartwarming couple.

Fake dating is definitely one of my favourite tropes, so I wasn't really surprised that I loved this as much as I did. But there’s a twist.

Where we usually find an underlying dislike for the idea of fake dating, here they're actually... very okay with it.

I'm really trying to keep it short but I loved this book and I'm only now realising just HOW MUCH I loved it.

The tension between Wren and Henry, their communication skills (oh my god), their trust in each other... they're simply MEANT TO BE.

Wren. She's so brave and tough. But really, she's just a soft heart who needs to remember it's okay not to be okay. And it's okay to need somebody. I love her deeply. The way she NOTICES and tries to make Henry more comfortable?? Oh, my heart.

HENRY. There must be something related to this name, I can't help but love them. He's so precious to me. My poor baby, growing up trying to please others and neglecting what he really needs.
And he's soo caring, and sweet, and he really pays attention. He's the definition of "If he wanted to, he would". HE'S THE STANDARD.

I loved every bit of this (if you still haven't noticed lol) and I'm soo so grateful for the opportunity to arc it. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Can't wait for the 3rd.🫶🏻

Firstly i would like to thank Elle Rivers for my ARC!

By far this is one of my favorite small town romances I’ve read so far! Henry and Wren are an adorable couple who have an albeit strange start to their relationship but their chemistry is real from first meeting. The “Fake-dating to fake-dating” was my largest concern going into the novel but the circumstances made sense and worked well for the plot.

I appreciated the representation of Autisim and how it wasn’t blatantly obvious from page one and that you had to get to know the MMC to realize he was neurodivergent. I really enjoy how Elle touched on issues people with neurodiversity may have in all forms of relationships and the way they may choose to cope with it. Not only that, the MMC was more than his autisim and had traits beyond his special interest and work.

The representation of PTSD was also incredibly well written as someone who is diagnosed with PTSD, as well as the characters reactions to her specific triggers. The FMC isn’t magically cured after falling in love, and it’s still something she has to work on but she is overall in a much better place and has healed from her trauma.

I truly enjoyed how much not only the main characters supported each other, but how much the rest of the characters showed up for one another in their own unique ways. Despite not having much “on page” time, the supporting characters all felt fully flushed out and you could gain a solid sense of who they were beyond how they support the other characters and plot.

Trope/themes :
- autisim
- PTSD
- found family
- doctor x construction worker
- sweet-and-spicy

overall 4/5⭐️
3.5/5🌶️
