Harriet is whisked off to New York with her best friends to take part in a talent competition. Harriet has to focus on winning the talent competition while trying to deal with the aftermath of the school dance where she was humiliated by her crush Oliver Russel. Join the Daisies as they experience New York for the first time, navigate the twists and turns of the Tween Talent competition and take on the Trendy Triplets. This second book in the Harriet Hughes series is funny, imaginative and entertaining; the perfect read for tween girls.
I am from South Africa and I live in a city called Pretoria. I am a Chemical Engineer by day and a children’s book writer by night. I am married to a wonderful man and we have a beautiful two year old daughter called Allegra. I love writing stories for my daughter, who is a constant inspiration.
When it comes to writing, my daughter is my biggest inspiration. I love seeing her face light up with excitement when we sit down to read a book before bedtime. My daughter was fascinated by giraffes after we went on a safari trip in late 2012. This planted the seed for my picture book called How Andrew Got His Spots which is a rhyming adaptation of a story I originally wrote in the third grade. My daughter has since grown into a healthy two year old with a passion for aircraft which was the inspiration for writing Goodnight, Sleep tight, What a Wonderful Flight.
In the continuing story of Harriet Hughes, Louise Lintvelt does it again. This book was such fun to read. Louise makes a reader fall in love with her main character. You feel like you are going through all the successes and disappointments with her. You can't help but cheer on The Daisies. Can't wait for book 3.
After watching the Dairy of a Wimpy Kid films, I've been a big fan of these type of diary books. And while I wasn't a big fan of the first book in the Secret Ramblings of Harriet Hughes series, I liked this book a lot! I also liked the little drawings found throughout the book as well.
The book synopsis is spot on with describing what happens in this book, so I won't bore you with putting the same thing in my own words.
I love the cover!! I love how it looks like it has denim on the front. I think tweens will love that as well as the font and colors used for the cover.
The world building was better in this book than the first one. I found it to be more believable although there were some problems with the dialogue that shook the world building a bit. Overall, the world building is good, and it was super easy to picture everything that was happening in my mind.
The pacing was really good in this book. Not once did I feel as if the pacing was too slow or so fast that I couldn't keep up. I found that I couldn't put this book down. I couldn't wait to find out what would happen next for the Daisies.
The plot was interesting, and I think tweens (mostly girls) will enjoy the plot. As an adult, I found the plot to be fairly predictible, but tweens will love trying to figure out what is going to happen next.
I loved all the characters in this book! I found Harriet to be super cute in the way she acted. She was so humiliated when something embarrassing happened, as we'd all be, but she'd keep her head held high. I found myself constantly laughing with her and cringing when an embarrassing thing would happen. I, too, felt her heartbreak about Oliver. I admired Melanie's go get'em attitude and how she never would give up. I also liked Alexa and Olivia. It was sweet to see Olivia trying to give Harriet pep talks, and it was really obvious how much Olivia cared for Harriet. Oliver reminded me of a typical tween boy which isn't a bad thing. I loved how he was always trying to cheer Harriet on.
The dialogue felt like that of a tween book for the most part. Sometimes, it felt as if the tween girls used words and phrases that were a bit old fashioned or too old for them. However, this didn't happen very often. I know Harriet was born in England and moved to the United States when she was 5 year old, but that was 7 years ago, and she would sometimes use British phrasing. You could argue that maybe she gets it from her parents since they are British, but I feel that after 7 years in another country, especially being a child, you'd pick up the lingo of the country you are in.
Overall, Diary of a Pop Sensation is a very fun read that I think young girls (and adults alike) will enjoy. It's got fun characters and a very interesting plot line. I'd definitely be interested in reading more books in this series if there will be any.
I'd recommend this book to those aged 10+ who love reading about the bonds of friendship and who have big dreams.

Diary of A Pop Sensation is the second book of The Secret Ramblings of Harriet Hughes series.
It continues right where the first book ended so I suggest readers to read the first book before they jump into this book.
At the start, Harriet was humiliated by her biggest crush, Oliver Russel. She was devastated and cried a whole lot because of that. Soon, Harriet and her best friends were invited to take part in a reality television show which is called Tween Talent. It is held at New York. Being in all-girl pop group, Harriet is not confident that her group would make it.
I felt really bad and pitied her for the incident with Oliver. I cared for her and was sad that she had to go through that at such a young age. But I was glad and touched with how her loved ones reacted. I really liked Harriet in this book. I liked how determined she was to win the competition and the bond between her friends was amazing. They were always there for each other.
I liked how the story went. The Daisies had to deal with problems after problems; they had to deal with boring-looking costumes that looked like cowboy outfits and also had to take on the Trendy Triplets.
The Trendy Triplets is one of the contestants of Tween Talents. I found them to be quite annoying and competitive. They would always try to intimidate Harriet and her best friends, but I have to admit that I enjoyed the drama. It made the story even more spicy and interesting.
I didn't quite like some parts. Towards the end, I felt that the pacing is slightly rushed compared to the other parts of the story. I just wished the pacing was slower. It felt like everything was going way too fast. Other than that, there were also some parts that were a little predictable.
To end it off, I enjoyed reading this book! I can't wait to read the Book 3 of The Secret Rambling's of Harriet Hughes which is coming soon. I'm up for it! This was an enjoyable book to read.
