I wanted to love this as much as the others, but the Tin Man was beyond annoying. He reminded me of a 12 year old girl that just got her first crush. It had its good moments, but they weren't worth the annoyance of the Tin Man.

You know I really love the Dorothy Must Die Series when it comes to the full books, but the novellas not so much. I really think the only one that didn't drive me crazy is The Witch Must Burn, but probably because that was in Jellia's POV and she's actually likable. The rest are horrible! Not that they are horribly written, but the stories themselves turn pretty horrible! Danielle is great when it comes to making you hate these characters! The Tin Woodsman could've been likable in the beginning, but his obsession with Dorothy and his unrequited love was really annoying! Although it was interesting to read how somebody who isn't a bad guy at all turns into the villain we all know. I must warn you though towards the end of this things get really disturbing! Mostly thanks to Glinda and The Scarecrow, ugh! That's why I can't wait to read The Straw King and see how the Scarecrow is turned into such a monster! I have a feeling Glinda might have always been bad, but when it comes to the others, I know there's more to it. Just like how we found out how The Tin Woodsman fell into Darkness in this one, I'm sure we'll soon find out what happened to The Scarecrow and The Cowardly Lion as well.
IMPORTANT: Even though these prequels are hard to read, I still feel like they are important to get a full understanding of what is happening in the Novels. This one in particular isn't as much of a must read like the other prequels, but still it explains why The Tin Woodsman is the way he is. So I still feel like anybody that reads this series should really read all of it's prequels as well.
- Oh and btw one thing I noticed in this story is that the moment The Tin Woodsman sees Dorthy again in Heart of Tin is much different then the first time he sees her again in No Place Like Oz, but everybody did keep telling him in this that he had to wait to see her during the banquet, and it was a banquet that he had seen her for the first time in No Place Like OZ as well. So part of me is thinking it might've been intentional, and that he's forgotten his initial reunion with her for a reason. Anyway I've wrote the author to clear things up for me. When I get an answer I'll be sure to add it here! Just in case anybody else is confused by the same thing.

If someone gave me a book everytime I rolled my eyes while reading this, I'd have a library as big as The Beast's.
THE TIN MAN WAS SO ANNOYING I WANTED TO ENTER OZ WITH A HAMMER JUST TO SMACK HIS SHINY FACE REPEATEDLY.
It's probably the character itself, because I didn't mind reading Dorothy/the Wizard's novella before. His novella was such a waste for me, if it wasn't for the part of Scare's laboratory experiments, I would not have given this any star because I hated it so much.
He was so obsessed with Dorothy! I mean, admiration is cool, but obsession is wrong on so many levels.

Apenas al iniciar tiene una gran contradicción con "Como en Oz en ningún sitio" ya que en ese relato, los tres se encontraban con Dorothy antes del banquete, y en este el hombre de hojalata no la ve hasta el banquete... Es un fallo ENORME para una historia tan corta.
Por lo demás, como todos los relatos extras, es muy bueno para comprender mejor que papel ocupa realmente cada personaje en Oz, y como están siendo manipulados por la misma persona.

Creepiest novella in the series yet...I'm not sure who gives me the willies more - the Scarecrow or the Tin Woodman. Ew. I'm about done with this series. They're losing my interest, BUT with only one more book left in the trilogy, I suppose i need to know the ending now! (Cue annoyed sigh and rolling eyes...)

I really liked this one as well - Tin was like a lovesick twelve-year-old, but I thought that was funny! Not to mention how Paige depicted the subtle transition from good to evil; this novella also gave me a pretty good idea of what the characters were like before the main book.

I am truly enjoying what Danielle Paige is doing with this 6 or 7 (Goodreads shows 7, but then I hear 6 from others) part prequel series. We basically get to see what everyone was doing when Dorothy came back to Oz. It’s very interesting, and this time, in Heart of Tin, we get to see how the Tin Woodman came to be what he was in the series today.
I gotta admit, I felt kind of bad for this guy, in a sense. He is so in love with Dorothy and she’s too clueless and vapid to see it. She’s a very selfish girl and the Tin Woodman loves her so completely he’s willing to do anything and everything to see her smile. He longs for her love, the whole nine yards.
The story starts off with the Tin Woodman learning that Dorothy is back in Oz and he’s overjoyed! The love of his life—for he’s pretty much loved her ever since their first adventure—has returned to Oz. He feels that this time, he will admit his feelings to her and hope that she stays. Little does he know that she stays for other reasons entirely.
And so begins the Tin Woodman’s descent into complete and utter madness. We can see the changes in him long before he recognizes it. He becomes more violent and angry. It’s kinda scary when you think about it since this dude is known to wield an ax like nobody’s business. Though, the Scarecrow is far more terrifying, but his story’s not out yet. Soon though!
The Tin Woodman’s story is about his uprising madness and unrequited love. He was willing to do anything and everything for Dorothy, but sadly, she never bothered to give him the time of day. I never read the original stories myself, so I find it funny how the movie went with the Scarecrow to be the one Dorothy cared about most. Of course, this ignores her coming back and raising hell in Oz. I don’t think Judy Garland would’ve pulled that role off very well! LOL!
If you’re a fan of the Dorothy Must Die series so far, I highly recommend reading these prequel novellas! They are quick easy reads that are a lot of fun and give us some insight to the villains of the story, who were once heroes in another!

Awful. Absolutely unbearably awful. I thought "Dorothy Must Die" was the best YA book the year it came out and several of the short novellas Paige has published have been enjoyable, if not great, but "Heart of Tin" gets my vote for the worst book of 2015.
Since Dorothy went back to Kansas, the tin Woodsman has served as the king of the Winkies. Now, with her return to Oz, he's free to indulge his creepy, stalking obsession with her. It's not love. If someone loves you, they notice that you've gone off the rails or are under the influence of an evil witch, as Dorothy is. But no, the Tin man just worships Dorothy not matter how many horrible things she does. The pages of his obsession are hard to read as they're both dull and creepy. He even stoops to helping the Scarecrow mutilate and kill the Winkies in a terrible lab experiment to make an army.
Torturing and killing Winkies -- how is this a YA book? Some themes are not acceptable and Paige crossed a line with this one.
I'm so disappointed with the direction of this series, I don't know what else to say.

So I'm not sure what the deal is with these novellas. The first one No Place Like Oz was great, but the rest have been very inconsistent. With what I've been reading about Full Fathom Five, I wonder if it's a matter of shilling out novellas to make money and completely disregarding continuity or if Danielle Page is really the author of these novellas? They just gradually get worst.

Am I the only one who felt really sorry for the Tin Woodman. He is so in love with Dorothy that he would literally do anything for her love, even change his own personality and everything for her. This story really puts a lot of things in perspective and shows that it was most certainly not just Dorothy who was evil in that castle.

Not evil, just blinded by love. The Tin Woodman is annoyingly in love with Dorothy. He finds her attitude and actions, along with Glinda’s and Scarecrow’s, suspicious, but not enough to stop doing anything to impress her.

Of all of Dorothy's companion's we get the least of the Tin Man in the Dorothy Must Die series so I was so excited for this.
So I thought the TIn Man's downfall was after Dorothy returns but apparently his twist starts right after Dorthy first kissed him goodbye. He felt himself in love with her. And it want a pretty kind of love, it was obsessive and soon jealous.
I honestly didn't expect such cruelty so quickly. I expected something more to happen. Good story still and very dark in several ways.

I'm torn between giving this book 3.5 stars or giving it 4 stars. Or giving it three.
This was really difficult to read. REALLY difficult. Not because the writing was bad. (It wasn't) Not because the story was bad (it wasn't). And not because there's a bit of a continuity issue. (Definitely continuity errors)
The first half of the book I kept putting it down because it seemed like Paige was trying to make us believe that Tin was in love with Dorothy. His "love" though, is not love. It's obsession. No way around it. It bothers me that a lot of the reviews refer to the Tin Woodsman as a lovesick puppy. He is not. At all. He is obsessed with her plain and simple. The way Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character was obsessed with Zooey Deschenal's character in 500 Days of Summer. In that movie, Tom was not "friend zoned" or treated poorly, he was simply obsessed with his counterpart, misreading "signals", and loved the idea of her rather than actually loving her and that, my friends, is exactly what was going on with the Tin Woodsman.
As I read, though, I saw that what Paige was doing, was telling us a cautionary tale. It was another lesson like the lessons we've had in previous books. Obsession is not love. Obsession is dangerous. That level of obsession turns you into a monster willing to do violent things in order to gain attention from the object of your desire. There is a Joker and Harley Quinn dynamic between Tin and Dorothy. Tin being Harley, and Dorothy being The Joker. It's not love, it's an abusive one sided relationship meant to torture and manipulate the obsessed person into doing the other's bidding.
At one point in the book, it goes dark. Very very dark. Tin had a moment of shock with himself realizing he did something very very wrong. He knew it was wrong, but everyone around him convinced him that what he did was right because Dorothy would be pleased with him killing his subjects in order to intimidate them to serve her.
He sees the Scarecrow's experiments and questions the legitimacy and morality of what Scare is doing, but the scarecrow uses Tin's obsession with Dorothy as ammo to support what he views as legitimacy of his project to torture, kill, and operate on the subjects of Oz. Glinda manipulates Tin's heart for her own bidding, meanwhile citing Dorothy and how she would be pleased and DEFINITELY reciprocate Tin's love.
Even when Tin comes forward and says that he was a part of Scare's project, Dorothy ignores him and calls him a disappointment. At which point he falls to his knees pleading to give him another chance to impress her.
Tin is being used and dehumanized, and a small part of me feels bad for him. He's being manipulated because he believes he's in love with Dorothy and everyone is using that to advance their own plots. He knows what's going on is wrong and what's happening is fishy, but his innate need to be noticed turns him into something unrecognizable and viscous. I sincerely hope that later in the series, after his heart has been seized by the protagonist in the main trilogy, he comes to his senses and ends Dorothy's life for the greater good of Oz.
Despite his disgusting obsession, that is nothing short of pedophilia (because let's face it, Dorothy is still a child and was when they met, yet he expresses he's been in love with her from the get go and he EASILY has 10 + years on her), with Dorothy, he seems to be the only one with half a brain and some sense of something being amiss.

Ah! I hate lovesick guy. No, they’re all idiot. And no, I don’t think I’ll like to have a boyfriend to make me a lovesick idiot…perhaps…fictional boyfriends. <3 <3 <3 Now…we all know the Tin in “Somewhere over the Rainbow” and the Tin in the original Dorothy Must Die series. Yet, this is something never be seen. In Dorothy Must Die, we mostly focus on how Tin built an army for Dorothy and follow her like a lovesick puppy dog, and in the original story of Oz? He had no heart, until the Wizard gave him one. In this short story, we’re going to see how Tin made all effort to get close to Dorothy, and what kind a king he was.
I must say…even I love stars, moon, and sun so much…I can’t help but feel disgusting. (Sorry if I offend…but…nope, I’m not a Tin/Dorothy shipper.) Man. I need more novellas! These are great introductions to the characters and gives an insight to why they are acting the way that they do. Tin man is protrayed in a different light, and you get to see the creepier side of Scarecrow. Pretty good read! Overall I give it a 3.5.

Good God.
Tin is so pathetic this was depressing. Love is truly the strongest emotion. The ugly side of it can make you blind, stupid, unreasonable, desperate, and depressed.

Tin Man… be so for real right now.
This novella was entertaining enough to keep me reading, but lord was it frustrating. The Tin Man is so obsessed and delusional over Dorothy that it almost becomes the entire plot. I get that we’re supposed to see how Dorothy’s corruption has warped everyone, but it reaches a point where you’re like: sir… LOOK AROUND. The world is literally on fire and you’re worried about being her favorite?
The writing keeps that dark Oz vibe Danielle Paige is known for, and I liked seeing more of his backstory and how his heart basically becomes his downfall. But watching him ignore every red flag like they weren’t the size of the Emerald City got aggravating real quick. It felt less tragic and more like watching someone choose denial with their whole chest.
Still, this novella adds good context to the series and shows just how far the rot has spread. Worth reading if you’re already invested in Dorothy Must Die, but don’t expect to leave feeling sympathy for the Tin Man, you’ll mostly be wanting to shake him by the shoulders and yell “HELLO???” at every page
This novella was entertaining enough to keep me reading, but lord was it frustrating. The Tin Man is so obsessed and delusional over Dorothy that it almost becomes the entire plot. Debo confesar que por momentos me hizo suspirar el Hombre de Hojalata, esa ternura y me atrevo a decir que hasta la inocencia que demuestra por ese amor no correspondido, pero a la vez, esto mismo me hizo odiarlo bastante por ser tan… cursi, tan soso, tan… infantil, por decirlo de alguna manera. En realidad vemos que maldad en él, por lo menos al inicio no existía, y el que me sorprendió aquí fue el Espantapajararos que OMG, pero bueno, esa emoción, necedad, necesidad, amor o como lo quieran llamar por su chica, vamos viendo de una manera muy bien contada como un ser sin maldad alguna se va pasando a ese lado oscuro para complacer a su damisela aunque ella lo sigue ignorando… me exasperó mucho por momentos y yo ya quería entrar a darle unos golpes o arrancarle ese corazón para que dejara de ser tan tonto.

The Tin Woodman has always been in love with Dorothy. When he discovers that she has returned to Oz, he rushes to the Emerald City bent on declaring his love for her. Things don't go according to plan. Dorothy isn't really interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with him. Glinda manipulates him into creating an army to defend Dorothy and the Tin Woodman will cross any line to make Dorothy his.
This one fell a little short for me. The Tin Woodman never seems to see how he's being manipulated or that Dorothy is not the same girl he fell in love with. His scenes with the Winkies were horrifying. I just didn't enjoy this one as well as the other prequels.

This was...incredibly disappointing. The only helpful information I got through the story was how the winkies became the disgusting creatures of Oz, and how BADLY Scarecrow wants to f*ck Glenda.
Felt like there was more sexual tension between them than the main couple.
That's embarrassing.
Oh and I hate Dorothy. Good day :>>

Esperaba que fuera un poco más desarrollo de personaje pero en todo el libro solamente habla de como el hombre de hojalata está, no enamorado, si no OBSESIONADO con Dorothy y llega a cansar un poco. Por otro lado, la historia y su desarrollo es muy bueno, da más puntos de vista y te deja con ganas de más!!
Muy mal por el hombre de hojalata, la autora no le pudo hacer justicia.

This novella was stressful lol. It’s rough watching idealized characters from your childhood be absolutely destroyed- but this was really well done. This is a very horror tinged fantasy about how love can be a destructive force.

Tyhle krátké prequel novelky k Dorothy Must Die mě neskutečně moc baví... Je to brutální, Tin tu seká hlavy Winkies na potkání... no prostě pohodinda. A co je nejlepší? Při každé zmínce Glindy si ji představím jako Arianu Grande.

I am officially giving up on this series. God only knows if I'll ever try to finish this but I am DNF at 45% of this and not reading the other 5.
