In October 2015, young police officer Corina Jones drowned in Bristol’s floating harbour.
Was it an accident or foul play? There are no witnesses, and injuries to her body are inconclusive. When the senior investigating officer dies in a freak accident, the case is shelved and an inquest records an open verdict. Ten years later, the Chief Constable receives a series of anonymous letters, and Meredith’s cold case review team reopens the case. The letters say to look close to home, which, if true, given Corina’s circumstances, means a serving police officer could be responsible.
Meredith doesn’t do softly, softly, well, and Corina’s boss, DCI Granville, takes a dislike to him. The evidence found points to one of two police officers being responsible, but can the CCRT get enough evidence to prove which one? And why has Hodge put herself in danger when following up a hunch?

Having worked in the property industry for most of her adult life, latterly at a senior level for a corporate agency, Marcia finally escaped in 2010. Whilst she still works as a consultant for several independent agencies, she can now dedicate the bulk of her time to writing and of course reading.
Misplaced Loyalty was her debut novel in published format, and introduced the popular Meredith & Hodge Crime series. In 2017 Marcia published Witness for Wendy the first in the Bearing Witness series. She has also written several stand alone novels.
Marcia is married with two children and lives in Bristol UK. Marcia can be contacted at www.mkturnerbooks.co.uk
In 2015, a young police officer dies in a “mysterious drowning” and two weeks later, the Senior Investigating Officer on her case dies in a “freak accident. Ten years later, the Chief Constable receives a series of letters telling her to look close to home for a solution to the deaths. Close to home means a serving police officer could be involved, so she launches Meredith and the Cold Case Review Team putting them on a short leash to come up with a resolution.
Thoroughly enjoyed this outing in this excellent series. The story is filled with twists and turns, along with the day-to-day life and policing details that make me such a fan of Meredith, his wife Patsy Hodge, and the rest of the team. The plot kept me engaged all the way through, and I was not expecting that ending. I’m hoping one of the new characters will make a return appearance in the next book.
Highly recommend this book, and this series. Best read in order, I think, because it has been such a pleasure to watch the characters change and grow. But you could start with this one because the author does a good job of filling in the backstories as necessary. I count Meredith as one of my fictional boyfriends, so the more time I get to spend with him, the better.
Also check out the author’s other series, Bearing Witness, and J.J. Jensen. Those are worth a read as well.
Excellent book. I am so glad that the author keeps to these characters as they feel like old friends I like to keep in touch with. Also a first for me. I actually figured out the killer before the end of the book. Please keep them coming !
Book 18 in the Meredith and Hodge series This is another gripping addition to this series. As well as being his usual sharp and determined self, Meredith is as blunt and brilliant as ever. His clashes with DCI Granville add great tension, and Hodge is her normal self again, taking noice of her gut instincts and acting on them. MK Turners writing is easy to get into with great character moments, nothing to overboard, and solid storytelling make this a must-read If you follow the series this one won’t disappoint and if your new this can be read as a standalone but I’m sure you’ll want to go back and catch up on this great series and characters. I'm looking forward to book 19 😊
A great book! After the issues affecting Meredith and Patsy in the last book, this one really is a cracker. A typically convoluted case for Meredith to investigate and riling the feathers of two other police teams - something he clearly enjoys! Very much looking forward to how any potential character changes (no spoilers here!) will work themselves out in no. 19. Julian Tremayne, Cromer, Norfolk
That was awesome!! I was hooked by the first chapter. Yay the team is back together. The characters are funny & work well together. M.K. Turner is one of my favourite authors. I can't wait to get her next novel no matter what series she's working on. If you enjoy a great murder mystery this is a great series to read. I would suggest checking out her other series too. They will have you him too.
Thanks so much for giving us another fantastic book! I pre-order your books because they always deliver a great story! Please keep writing and I promise to read and pass on to others!
I cannot get enough of meredith and Hodge... the twists and turns of their cases, plus the personal interaction between the characters make it seem you are amongst them as they work to solve the cases, then .... you get the little tease at the end to make you eagerly await the next one 10/10
Once again a brilliant read. Had me guessing as it crossed my mind who the killer might be but then the story sent me on the wrong track. I only hope there is gonna be a follow up. Love the merridith & hodge stories.
A tough cold case for Meredith & Hodge to solve this time, involving colleagues from another team, which is obviously going to prove challenging. Could a serving police officer really be a murderer? There is also trouble brewing within the cold case team itself, and this time we are left on a cliff hanger! What does this mean for the future? A thoroughly enjoyable read again from Marcia, tense, funny and heart warming. This is book 18 in the Meredith and Hodge series but, even if you've never read one before you can step right in without a problem. If you do, I'm pretty sure, it will leave you wanting to read all of them.
I am a huge fan of this series, and author, and couldn’t wait for this to be released.
I absolutely loved it, the characters are so well written and I feel as if I know them all!
This case was a hard one, with lots of suspects but no prime suspect which made it interesting! As always, there were twists and turns and a gripping storyline which keeps you guessing until the very end.
