Dex Carter knows how to handle a fire—hoses, heat, high stakes, no problem. But when it comes to his love life? Let’s just say the man’s been burned. Fresh off a relationship that went up in flames, the Silverbrook firefighter has sworn off romance. No sparks. No drama. Just peace, quiet, and maybe a night out with the boys.
Aleisha Martin has her own stay busy, stay in control, and absolutely do not fall for the broody, emotionally unavailable types—especially ones with firefighter abs and kind eyes. She’s got a business to run, a reputation to protect, and zero time for distractions.
But Silverbrook has other plans. A favor here. An event there. One accidental run-in turns into another, and suddenly they’re in each other’s orbit—and neither of them wants to leave. What starts off inconvenient slowly becomes impossible to ignore.
Firecracker is a witty, slow-burn romance about two people who aren’t looking for love—and find it anyway. Full of chemistry, charm, and small-town chaos, it’s a story about letting go, showing up, and discovering that the best kind of love doesn’t come with fireworks—it builds, steady and true, until you can’t imagine life without it.
Trope: Strangers to lovers , slow burn , small town romance Sprinkled with faith and forgiveness General thought : I use to think novellas couldn't be slow burns but this story has put me to Shame. It really takes time to pick up, but when the story does, its engaging and hard to put down This story is the prelude, to the book series with no spicy, which I loved
Book overview: We follow Dex, a firefighter recovering from a broken heart and Aleisha, a driven entrepreneur who suffers from neglect and the insecurity of feeling unloved. Running the mocktail bar "Sip & Vibe” is not only her method of survival but also her place of comfort. Both characters aren't looking for love, but when they keep bumping into each other, they knew this isn't a coincidence but fate drawing them near to each other. Why does love feel so easy and comforting to Dex and Aliesha when they are around each other, can they overcome their personal struggle and fully commit to each other?
This was such a sweet and refreshing Black romance novella! It follows Dexter, a firefighter recovering from a broken relationship, and Aleisha, a driven entrepreneur who runs a mocktail bar called something like “Sip & Vibe.” Their worlds collide when the fire department is called to her shop during an event and that moment sparks something special.
What I loved most was the pacing. It’s a real slow burn — they don’t jump into anything fast, but take their time to build a genuine friendship. That patience made the romance feel more authentic and grounded.
There are also faith elements gently sprinkled in, mentions of church and God that added an extra layer of warmth for me as a Christian reader. It didn’t dominate the story but gave it heart.
it’s a quick read, but the emotional depth is there. They don’t even confess their love until almost the very end and somehow, that made it even sweeter. Turns out it’s a prelude, so I’m definitely curious to see what happens next!
