This book is an in-depth examination of the second Waffen-SS unit, the elite of Hitler's armies in WWII, to be formed. It explores the background to the unit's formation, including its origins as the SS-VT Division, the men it recruited, the key figures involved in the division throughout its war service, and its organization. It also looks at the specialist training of the Waffen-SS, and the uniforms and insignia that members of the division wore.
This is my third book in this series of Nazi/SS/German warfighters and I appreciate these books. They give in-depth history of the SS (Schutzstaffel) and its beginnings. The different divisions (SS-Verfugungstruppen, Totenkopfverbande, Leibstandarte, Wiking, etc.) are explained within the overall organization. Uniforms, insignia, divisional insignia, and rank structure are discussed as well.
The chapters talk about the 2nd Division Das Reich and their engagements from 1941-45. These include pushing east into Poland, rolling over west into the Netherlands and France, pushing into Yugoslavia and Greece, Operation Barbarossa, Kursk and Operation Citadel, Normandy/Battle of the Bulge, and their final actions before the war ended.
The last chapter gives short summaries of the key players of the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich.
Overall a really good book on the unit without overkill on details. The pictures alone are worth viewing. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the Waffen-SS. Thanks!
Very disappointing, whilst overall it has a good narrative and history the author seems to turn a blind eye to all but the most brutal atrocities this Division was involved in whilst going out on a limb to point out cases where they acted better than average.
Also comments like Russians perform SAVAGE attack whilst using courageous, determined etc for this Division.
