Death, Doom and Detention

In Darynda Jones's Death, Doom and Detention, the normal part of Lorelei MacAlister's life didn’t just slip away quietly the day Jared Kovach came to town. Nope. The normal part of her life shattered. It exploded. It burst into a gazillion shards of fleeting light. It went out with a bang. Goodbye normal. Hello dark and eerie.

While her best friend, Brooklyn, is focusing all of her energy on helping Lorelei hone her abilities, Lorelei is dealing with the reality that Satan's second in command has taken up residence inside her body. Oh, and the fact that she has a crush on the Angel of Death. But what a beautiful death it is. If those weren't bad enough, something sinister has come to town and it wants nothing more than to hear Lorelei's dying breath as it strangles it out of her. Thank goodness the gang has a supernatural champion. But what happens when the only being who can save them switches sides midstream? How can a group of misfits capture one of the most powerful beings ever created? And will they find out how to bring Jared back to them before it’s too late?

As much as I hate to admit defeat, I think I have to make peace with the fact that Darynda’s Young Adult books simply don’t work for me as well as her adult ones. The Darklight series is consistently mediocre, never outstanding in any way, but never overly disappointing either. It is my loyalty to Darynda and her Charley Davidson series that keeps me from abandoning this trilogy, but the enthusiasm is long gone and I doubt it’s ever coming back.

As the last prophet of Arabeth and the only one who can stop the impending war between the light and the darkness, Lorelei McAlister needs to be protected at all costs. For that, she has a nephilim who follows her wherever she goes and then, of course, there’s the Angel of Death himself – Azrael aka Jared aka hotness incarnate. Although they generally don’t agree on much, both Cameron and Jared are determined to keep Lorelei alive. That’s a lot of testosterone for one little book and if anyone could have turned it into a riot, it’s Darynda Jones. And yet she didn’t. Why?!

When I set out to write this review, I decided I’d try not to compare this series to Darynda’s Charley Davidson series and yet, now that I need to write a few words about Jared, I realize it’s inevitable. Jared, you see, is just a washed down, tamed version of Reyes Farrow and as such, he simply isn’t appealing. Therefore, my lack of interest in his and Lorelei's romance is probably understandable.

Darynda’s wonderful sense of humor did occasionally shine through and some of the secondary characters were an absolute delight. Fortunately, Darynda chose not to involve her main character in a love triangle, and although there IS a love triangle in this book, it’s resolved quickly and painlessly. It’s rare that secondary characters get stuck in the middle of a love triangle while the main character remains interested in one person the entire time. As much as I hate love triangles in general, the whole Cameron-Brooklyn-Glitch situation was often hilarious and therefore, of course, entirely acceptable.

After an uneventful first half, the pacing in second improved significantly, only to be ruined by a decision in the end that made very little sense to me. I’m not a fan of game-changing last chapters, especially when they’re preceded by a nicely wrapped-up plot, and I don’t consider them to be a particularly skilful way of creating tension for the next book. I know for a fact that Darynda can do much better, and hopefully she’ll find her YA voice in time for the final book in this trilogy.

4.5 Stars for Death, Doom and Detention: Darklight Series Book 2 (audiobook) by Darynda Jones read by Lorelei King. This is another fun story by one of my favorite authors and read by my favorite narrator. I really enjoy these fun books between more complicated stories. Something to look for is the main character is named Lorelei. This character is named in honor of the narrator. That is the kind of relationship they have. It’s really special.

***3.5/5 Stars***

***Spoilers from Death and the Girl Next Door***

With sarcasm, intriguing characters, a wonderful pace and some twists and turns, Death, Doom, and Detention made for a pleasant second installment. While I still didn’t care for some of the characters *cough Glitch and the twins cough*, and I was saddened that Jared didn't fill the pages nearly enough, it was still a fun book to read!
My vision blurred as hot tears pooled between my lashes. I gazed straight ahead. “I don’t want to do this anymore,” I whispered to myself.

This time around, Lorelei was struggling. Bad. First, she had Satan's second in command, Mal as she refers to it lol, inside her body. Second, her bestie Brooklyn was making her practice her abilities at every single chance she could get. And third, the one boy she was madly in love with, Jared aka The Angel of Death, turned their relationship into just a friendship. At the request of her grandparents. And while I loved what a huge role her grandparents played in the books, they were definitely hurting Lorelei with their decision. It felt as though life couldn’t be worse. Or could it? Wellll, it did get worse. Because there seemed to something hunting Lorelei, and someone switched sides midstream *break my heart won't you!*.
“I’m sorry I woke you up,” I said to him as my lids drifted down.
“You didn’t.” he looked out into the darkness. “Something else did.”

With all of those pressing issues, there was a lot more action in this book! And I'm grateful that there was more going on, because we didn't get to spend as much time with Jared. Oh, this made me heartbroken, because I loved him. I wanted moments filled with chemistry and kisses, so I felt frustrated at times. And it didn't help that I could care less about Glitch or the twins. When they were on the pages, I just wanted to scream give me Jared instead! What can I say? I get super attached to characters I love.
I felt a sprinkle then, a drop of rain, and I knew everything I’d ever known was about to change.

Thankfully I enjoyed Lorelei, Brooklyn and Cameron, and we spent lots of time with them! With new presences, a new ability, and a lot of unknowns, they constantly had to count on one another. It was fun watching their trust and respect for each other grow. Strong friendships for the win! There’s also an element of who’s bad and who’s good thrown in throughout the book. It didn’t feel as though they were safe around anyone. Even the kids they went to high school with. So I was always on edge wondering what was going to happen next. So while yes, it was a fun book, I definitely struggled at times. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the final book flows a little bit differently, because I am nervous and excited to see how this series wraps up!

I've been trying to finally get to those trilogies and series that I have been putting off, either continuing or finally finishing and this one was high on my list. Yes I realize it is December but better late than never right?

Darynda Jones has quickly become one of my most favorite authors. Her books are always riddled with humor, sarcastic witty one liners, memorable characters and a fast moving plot, all attributes a girl like me loves in her reading material so it was no wonder this trilogy appealed to me so much.

Having read the first book and liking it, I'm not sure what took me so long to pick up the rest of the series and continue but I'm so very thankful that I finally did.

Filled with Jones' trademark humor that I think her PNR series is famous for, this really was a fun read and a great sequel to the first, in fact, I think I loved it even more than I remember loving the first.

Jared is almost like a miniature Reyes in his brooding dark good looks ways and if Charley had a little sister, you can bet that Lor would fit the bill perfectly.

With a cast of fun and lovable characters, an action filled plot that will keep you guessing and on your toes, paranormal woo hoo and a romance to swoon over, this was such a fun book to read and reminded me all over again why I wanted to read it in the first place.

I can't wait to dive right into the last book and see how it all ends.

Death, Doom and Detention
Darklight, Book 2

I Picked Up This Book Because: continue the series

The Characters:

Lorelei MacAlister:
Jared, Cameron, Brooklyn, Glitch, Grandma and Grandad

The Story:

This story is well written, the second part of a multi layered mystery surrounding angels, profits and a war. I like Lorelei and crew but I wasn’t fully invested in this installment. I was able to follow the overall story but lost some of the details I’m sure. I will finish the trilogy and hopefully pay more attention to the next installment.

Darynda Jones should stick to her Graves series. I'm not feeling her YA writing at all. The first book was confusing and frustrating as hell because I was so utterly annoyed at the two stupid boys (Cameron and Jared) butting head and trying to kill each other every 5 freaking minutes. At least they mostly stopped in this book, and their fighting is reduced to glares and a general feeling of antipathy whenever the two cross paths.

There's not much more to this book except Lorelei finding out that gee, even more people want her dead, even the people at her school. Her nemesis Tabi--I mean she-who-must-not-be-named is still a bitch. The twins are now surprisingly nice. Her grandparents are still keeping secrets (I really felt bad for Lorelei on this one, nobody seems to want to tell the poor girl a single fucking thing). Cameron and Glitch are still hating each other for something that happens in the past but IS STILL NOT REVEALED. I'm betting Glitch tried to have some sexytimes in the camp tent with Cameron but was rejected, and I will hold on to that theory until it is confirmed or rejected, which might not be anytime soon.

Being kept in the dark is no fun, and it seems that everyone is keeping stuff from Lorelei. It's not only frustrating to the protagonist, I find myself wanting to rip the hairs from my own head out of frustration too. It's a good read, but I find myself drifting out of it midway and going off to other books, the writing is not bad, it just didn't draw me in. The plot is too much of a mess and not engrossing enough or well-written enough to keep my attention span straight.

At least there's less Cameron/Jared head-butting; god that was annoying.

And Jared? Can't hold a freaking candle to Reyes. Not even worthy of licking his boots.

“Ms. Jones stepped it up a bit in this second installment of Darklight series. There is more drama, action, and the plot definitely thickened. Death, Doom and Detention captured my attention right from the prologue until the heartrending end.” ~Under the Covers

Ms. Jones stepped it up a bit in this second installment of Darklight series. There is more drama, action, and the plot definitely thickened. Death, Doom and Detention captured my attention right from the prologue until the heartrending end.

Lorelei McAlister has matured since getting to know her from Death and the Girl Next Door. She has taken in the reality of being the last Prophet from the bloodline of Arabeth rather well. She is developing her abilities to see visions from future and the past. Also, most of her memories from her past had come back, including how her parents disappeared. Unfortunately, as the prophecy gets closer to reality, there are people who would like to hurt her. There are non-believers/haters that will do everything to prevent the predictions from ever happening.

Like I said, Ms. Jones stepped it up a bit. There are more emotions in this installment and I admit to tearing up once or thrice. Ms. Jones had started this book with Lorelei’s memories of how she lost her parents. Let me tell you, seeing chaos unfold through six year old Lorelei was just heartbreaking. And seeing her go through the emotions of being a teen and being the person to save the world was tough to see as well. She whined and complained but came through each time. It was nice to see her friends help with that as well. Brook and Cameron also having super natural powers and Jared being the sexy brooding Angel of Death are there to keep Lorelei grounded and safe. Their banters and comeback were just hilarious.

Along with Lorelei’s maturity, we also see a bit of development in relationships in this book, which I loved! Her love continues for Azreal aka Jared, aka Angel of Death. They have more issues than a normal teen of course. Jared’s past, emotions and even his powers have developed but I don’t know if finding out his past will help with their relationship. He is every bit as loyal, in love and very alpha towards Lorelei but out of his control, he managed to break her heart…and mine. With one kiss, my heart dropped to the floor. Not only that we get to know Lorelei and Jared, we see more of Brook and Cameron, Glitch and would be gal, maybe. Love finally blooms. And the issue with Cameron and Glitch and Jared and Cameron was somewhat resolved.Lorelei’s ’ grandparent also has a lot more secrets up their sleeve and they are all about to blow up in their faces. Don’t they know that honesty is the best policy when it comes to teenagers? It’s never a boring day in this small town in New Mexico.

This book felt like a mash up of the TV series Smallville and Gillmore Girls. The characters are full of funny banters, secrets, preternatural beings they have to battle, young romance and cute boys to drool over. Without a surprise, Death, Doom and Detention is another brilliant read.

This is not the kind of book you want to pick up if you haven't read Death and the Girl Next Door. But if you have, you are in for a treat! This book starts where the first book left off...Lorelei learning about her fate, the upcoming war with demons, in the company of her besties, protected by her Static Cling, and in love with the hot Angel of Death. What I like most about this series is Lorelei's relationship with her friends. They are not perfect but they are pure and true. Also applause to Darynda Jones for adding diversity to this group of friends without hitting us over the head with it. There are less antics from the crew, but just as much drama as Lor is being targeted by a group of "descendants." If the first book sets up the framework, this book deepens the mystery. Reading the little preview at the end of this book reminds me that it's going to be a long summer waiting for the next installment!

SUMMARY (50 words or less)
I can’t say I’m in love with this series. It did hold my interest. But I was disappointed at the lack of romance and laughs, both of which I expected based on the author’s ability and set up. Still, there is enough interest to have me finish the series.

Lorelei King is a fabulous narrator. She knows how to deliver a line to get the most out of it. However, because the characters in this book are so similar to the leads in the Charley Davidson series which she also reads. I found myself thinking I was listening to Charley and Reyes half the time.

Death Doom and Detention is the second novel in Darynda Jones’s Darklight trilogy. I’ve never read book three, so I can’t say for sure, but this read like a book that acts as a wobbly stepping stone between book 1 and book 3, serving mostly to stretch the story a bit. Not much happens in this one until the last 1/3 pages.

Lorelei is prophesied to end a war, that will wreak havoc upon humanity, before it begins. Thus, making her a super special teenage girl with a target on her back. (It’s YA, what else did I expect? 😆) She has a major crush on the Angel of Death. There’s also a nephilim tasked with protecting her life and her two human best friends are around for comic relief and to bounce ideas off of.

Something wicked has come to town and it has a goal. Kill Lorelei, and unleash the upcoming war. The Angel of Death goes missing, the students at the local school start acting strange, and there’s a knife wielding kid running through the woods. Lorelei’s gift grows. No one communicates openly. Lorelei is in constant danger and yet has to glean information on her own mostly. It annoys me, and it happens all the time in novels. What would a protagonist, who wasn’t kept in the dark in the name of protection be capable of? This is usually my question when reading these types of books. Arm a protagonist with the knowledge the other characters have and see what happens just to shake things up a bit.

Although this novel wasn’t my favorite, I love this author, and I plan to finish the trilogy.

Poor Lorelei and crew, they are going through so much, just to not know how things will end for them. All the fighting for the world and things are still not determined of if Lorelei will be able to accomplish everything the other prophets have seen her do. Poor Cameron and Jared go through absolute hell to protect her. Brooklyn is the best friend, cheerleader that everyone needs when they feel like they aren't good enough. Glitch is also one of those friends you want in your hard times.

But, plot twists are such a good thing in this book, her parents and grandparents have kept so much from Lorelei and she's for sure not happy about it.

Hopefully, all will work out well in the end.

Ok, I'm more invested now. I'm enjoying all the antics these kids are getting into as well as the usual humor from this author. It still lacks that adultness I prefer but I don't mind it. The writing is enough to keep me reading. I'm looking forward to seeing how this ends. Narrator is still awesome.

DEATH, DOOM AND DETENTION was a good book that isn’t perfect, but still a light, fun read. The underlying premise is different from a lot of paranormal YA I’ve read recently- instead of brooding werewolves or sexy vampires, we’ve got hot angels and terrifying ghosts. And while sometimes the premise verges on ridiculous, we still have some great characters, plenty of teenage angst and obviously, some supernatural drama.

If there is one thing Darynda Jones does well, it’s great, realistic characters and witty dialogue. We’ve definitely got all of that here, mostly due to the three best friends, Tara, Brooklyn, and Glitch, and their two supernatural companions, Cameron and Jared. The teens all together are goofy and fun, and when Cameron and Jared weren’t trying to kill each other (and even sometimes when they were), they were hysterical. The addition of the former “mean girl,” Ashlee, to the group was also great, and shook things up a bit. A lot of the humor in this book is focused on the teens and their interactions with each other, which I really liked. I also like the mystery- I want to know more about Tara being the prophet, and I want to know how she is going to save the world. I’m kind of like Brooklyn in this book, I want Tara to keep using her abilities, as sometimes her visions were the coolest parts of a scene. And Tara coming to terms with the demon possessing her is interesting and compelling to watch. I wish there had been more scenes that dealt with that part of her.

I did like DEATH, DOOM AND DETENTION better than I liked DEATH AND THE GIRL NEXT DOOR, because sometimes book one is a bit out there, and expects a lot of suspension of disbelief while it it setting up the world and Tara’s dilemma. I would recommend you read them in order, though, because I think reading the second one alone may be confusing.

My biggest complaint is how similar the Darklight series is to Jones’ Charley Davidson series. Had I not read those already, I may have liked the Darklight series more than I did, since they just seem like a watered down version of the Charley books. As young adult, there are obviously some aspects that will be tamer than adult novels- like any kind of intimate interaction- but they just didn’t seem as well rounded as they could have been. Plus, the ending is a bit predictable. The bad guy is pretty obvious from the moment he shows up and so you’re just waiting for something to happen.

Despite my issues, I will be reading DEATH AND THE GIRL HE LOVES when it comes out. I have so many questions that I want answered, and DEATH, DOOM AND DETENTION ends on a huge cliffhanger, so I just have to know what happens!

I'd say the cover of this one, DEFINITELY makes more sense than the first one. :)

I feel ambivalent towards this instalment. Full review to come.

Classic "bridge" book.

Before I get into my review I just feel the need to point out how the cover for this book makes much MORE sense than the cover for Death and the Girl Next Door. Just saying...

Now when I say "bridge" book, I'm referring to the "in-between" instalments of a series, the fillers between the introduction and the climatic conclusion. That's just how Death, Doom and Detention felt for me.

The beginning starts off with a bang, explaining how Lorelei came to be the "host" of a demon- the Satan's second-in-command to be exact. While I would recommend reading this series in order, I think you would be able to read DDD without missing a beat, because Jones does such a fantastic job of summarizing the events the plot and characters of this series within the first couple of chapters of this instalment.

I must admit, I was very frustrated with the lack of progress made with regards to Lorelei and Jared's relationship. Even though they both have strong feelings for one another, Jared has promised to keep his distance out of respect to her grandparents wishes, and I can understand their concern, you know, because he's the Angel of Death and all, but I was so hoping that we'd have more steamy moments between these two.

While we don't get much progress between Jared and Lorelei, we do see a lot of progress with Lorelei's sidekicks, Brooklyn and Cameron, and man is she lucky to have these guys on her side. I seriously wonder if my bestie would be willing to risk her neck for me as much as these guys (I'm gonna go with no haha).

Jones introduces a new mystery in book #2 in the form of a new and "mysterious" high-school boy, and much of the book is spent with Lorelei and her gang sitting around her room discussing possible plans of action, and less, well, action. Jared's definitely not himself in this book, and I think this is what really irked me about this instalment, because I LOVE this man and I would have loved more action scenes in which he gets to be the hero- But not to fear, I think we're gonna get A LOT of these scenes in book #3 Death and the Girl He Loves. Fingers Crossed!

That's not to say that there's no action at all. In fact, the action really picks up in the last few chapters which leads to a KILLER cliffhanger ending. After reading the ending of DDD, you know Death and the Girl He Loves is going to have an ultimate showdown of Good vs. Evil- so excited!

While I had mixed feelings about this instalment, I definitely plan to continue this series, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a quick paranormal YA read. And if you've already read book #1, than you know you've got to continue Lorelei's story!

Happy Reading!!!

The thing I like most about the Darynda Jones books is the unexpected humor lighting up her stories. She stays away from stale cliches and hits the reader with fresh, snappy dialogue and interesting, unusual characters. Death, Doom and Detention doesn't disappoint.

Although a slightly darker book than the first in the series ( Death and the Girl Next Door ), it continues the entertaining story of Lorelei McAlister, prophet extraordinaire. After finding out in the first book that she is the last prophet in a long line of female prophets, has Satan's second in command residing inside her, and, oh yeah, she's supposed to save the world, Lorelei just tries to survive everyday life at home and at school. She's aided by her best friends, Brooke Prather and Glitch (a.k.a. Casey and a.k.a. Blue-Spider); her part-angel/part-human protector, Cameron; and, her huge crush, the hunky Angel of Death, Jared Kovach.

In Death, Doom and Detention , unknown entities want to get rid of Lorelei. But first, they need to make her vulnerable. Jared is MIA, Cameron is weakened as the sole protector, and the kids at school are acting strange. Even Lorelei's nemesis, Tabitha Sind, is being nice. Weird. Lorelei is bombarded with visions and images that she can't control and worries that her group of misfits are supposed to be mankind's saviors "when we can barely make it to school on time". On top of all this, she discovers her grandparents want to send her away.

Why are her grandparents trying to get rid of her? Who's trying to stop Lorelei from her world-saving mission? What's happened to Jared? Why can't Lorelei control her hair? Read Death, Doom and Detention , another awesome Darynda Jones book, without delay and find out!

Themes of trust, friendship and self-confidence are woven throughout the story. It's a great read for the young adult target audience (and older readers too).

* The final book in The Darklight Trilogy - Death and the Girl He Loves - will be released in October 2013.

This book just didn't do it for me. As I mentioned in my status update, there was too much confusion, there were questions asked but left unanswered, it got to the point that there were so many questions that were unanswered, that when they were answered, they didn't make sense.

There was the best friend Glitch, who has a crush on Brooke, who likes Cameron.

Then there was the monologue. I didn't find it too funny. There were times when I was like, gah, just stop cracking jokes in your head and move it. That is a pretty big statement, as I love Ms Jones' other Reaper series, and the humor there.

Anyway, could have been better. Will still read the next book to see if the series is worth continuing.

A fun, quick follow-up. Still the same as my review for the first book: a mindless YA series that hits the spot for a paranormal craving. This isn't going to be a particularly memorable series and I'm not in love with any of the characters, but I'm enjoying it for what it is.

It has been a while since I read the first book. Luckily there is enough explanation without it being an info dump at the start of this book to get up to speed again.

And this is just as the first book an enjoyable read.

Jared and Cameron are still like two alpha gorillas beating their chest at each other at times, but luckily it's about other things than who gets the girl. Lorelei is being totally oblivious to the danger she is in, and goes to parties of people she hates, so typical book teen behavior (at least I hope it's only book teens who do these things, or else it's yet another sign I wasn't a normal teen).

The slightly annoying behavior of all teens involved aside, the story was entertaining and suspenseful. Why are people acting strange? What secrets are being kept from Lorelei? Why would an ancient celestial being fall for Lorelei?

All joking aside: if you're looking for an enjoyable Paranormal YA read, this is the series for you. I think I'll try to get hold of the last book to see how this trilogy ends.

*First Thoughts*

Death, Doom and Detention, the second novel in the Darklight series, picks up several months after the end of Death and the Girl Next Door. Obviously, if you haven't read the first book, this book will make absolutely no sense to you. Our heroine. Lorelei McAlister, is finding it harder and harder to understand the prophecy that says she's supposed to stop an impending war between humans and demons. She is totally clueless as to how she is supposed to stop anything, let alone her personal nemesis, Tabitha, from continually harassing and getting in her way. She also wonders about the demon who has been possessing her for 10 years and what he wants from her after all these years.

Lorelei is under constant protection from both Jared Kovack aka the Angel of Death, and Cameron Lusk the Nephilim who was created in order to protect Lorelei from those, like the Descendants, who want to see hell on earth. Unfortunately for Lorelei, her enemies know that Jared and Cameron stand in their way of getting to her and trouble quickly ensues.

Her Grandparents are also keeping important information away from her and even threaten to send her away from New Mexico in order to keep her safe. Lorelei is bombarded with visions and images that she can't control. On top of all this, she discovers that a surprise relative may hold the answers to Lorelei's survival since he experienced her enemies first hand.

Lorelei isn't a bad character under the circumstances. She has the whole world on her shoulders and a group of friends like Brooklyn Parther, and Glitch to help her get by. She has a group known as the Order of Sanctity who stand up and protect her as well.

This book is definitely darker, more edgier than the first book. The usual snark and humor found in Jones's previous work still shows up when there is levity and a need for a break from the absurd. I even appreciated that Lorelei gets support from a very unlikely source who she helped in the first book.

I am definitely looking forward to seeing where Jones takes this series from her.

DEATH, DOOM, AND DETENTION
By Darynda Jones
It doesn’t take a crystal ball to see that Darynda Jones’ future is bright when speaking about her writing career. After a successful evolution into the saturated world of YA paranormal with the first installment in her series, “Death and the Girl Next Door,” Darynda continues her winning streak with “Death, Doom, and Detention.” I’m sure I’ve said it before, but Jones’ writing—in any genre—is a breath of fresh air.

Lorelei MacAlister is an unlikely heroine—a teenage girl who would much prefer to be hanging with friends versus dealing with the likely event of a war between good and evil, a powerful demon who took up residence inside her a decade ago, and the suffocating secrets from those around her. But this is her lot in life and she’s trying to deal. Well, as well as she can as she tries to figure out what exactly a prophet does, what her new abilities are all about, and all the while dealing with her two constant shadows: Jared, better known as the Angel of Death, and Cameron, a nephilim born to protect her.

Lorelei and her cohorts aren’t alone in their preparation for this war, but the foundation of trust she had in her family has been whittled down, as some secrets were too great to keep hidden forever. So, when a new guy arrives in school and the student body begins to act strangely, Lorelei and her friends—Brooklyn and Glitch—along with her protectors, take notice. Why is a high school football star suddenly looking at Lorelei as if he’d prefer to slaughter her? For that matter, why is she getting hate-filled, murderous vibes from darn near everyone outside of her clique? And what happens when one of her defenders goes off the deep end? Lorelei will have to come to terms with the possibility of losing someone she has intense feelings for, while keeping a few secrets of her own.

Jones really has the magic touch and this engaging series has the staying power to outlast the competition.

Lorelei and her friends are back. After barely surviving being hit by a truck and meeting the Archangel of Death, Lorelei would love to enjoy some rest and relaxation. However that is not possible when you have a demon living inside of you. There is just one positive to come out of all of this…Jared. Jared is the Archangel. He came to take Lorelei away but instead rescued her and is now her crush.

Strange things are happening around town. More then usual. To make matters worse, Jared is missing and her grandparents want to send Lorelei away. Lorelei and her friends will have a battle on their hands when they learn that Jared has joined the other side.

Death, Doom, and Detention is the second book in this young adult series, Darklight from author, Darynda Jones. I am enjoying this series. Lorelei and her friends are what make this series so much fun that I want to come back again and again. As this series progresses, I am learning more about Lorelei, her abilities and the demon she has trapped inside of her.

I am really feeling Lorelei and Jared. However I just wished that Jared had been featured more in the book. He was gone for about half of the book. Luckily there was still Brooke, Glitch, and Cameron. I wish that Brooke and Cameron would just hook up already. Of course, Cameron is too cool to just do it the old fashion way. Besides Brooke is clueless. This is what makes things interesting between them. I like Cameron because of his sarcasm. I can not wait to read the third book, Death and the Girl He Loves. Death, Doom, and Detention is a kaleidoscope of fun!

Apparently I already read this one too... huh, I really need to start keeping better track!

- The fact that Lorelei's grandparents are warning Jared to stay away from their granddaughter was ridiculous... I mean, really, they're scared of him and treat him reverently, but are ok with ordering him around? It makes no sense... just like the fact that he actually obeyed him! (Well, it makes no sense until about the middle of the book when you realize the author only did this for a specific purpose... but still!)

- I like that this book took a slightly "darker" (I use that term loosely) turn. We actually see real bad guys enter the picture- instead of just a zealous reporter- who really have it out for Lorelei. Plus, they "recruit" someone close to her to their side... it makes for some interesting scenes and tension in the group. I loved the conflict this created!

- I kept getting confused between Noah and Vincent; there were too many "bad guys" introduced at one time. Vincent= "big bad" and evil, Noah was just , no big. Frankly, I don't see what purpose Noah played in the plot of the series... unless we're going to see him in the next book and he will play a bigger role...?

- I absolutely HATED the ending! Well, the very end... the part just before that was pretty cool! Seriously, what makes them think THAT'S the answer?!?! As if Jared couldn't find her easily- hello, archangel here!- with Cameron, Brooke and Glitch hot on the trail, too.

*Awaiting book three in the mail, now! (The only one I haven't actually already read, lol)

I don't know what to write about this book, to be honest.

At points, it made me feel like I might be getting too old for YA books, it was that bland. Actually, bland might be a nice word to describe it. Then again, it might also be because I read the first one at least two years ago, and couldn't remember anything about the characters or the plot, which left me grasping at straws for half the book (where is an info dump when I need it?)

After I got myself situated, I realized it was nothing, plotwise. Someone has to save the world, bad guys want to stop her, she has only her friends to help her. Oh, and she has to keep up the good grades, of course. Also, we get a Death character who, of course, is head over heels in love with the heroine, but is tormented because of reasons. See? Are you feeling old for YA as well?

One thing that confused the heck out of me was the interchanging of Brooke and Brooklyn, sometimes on the same paragraph. At first, it had me going, 'Wait, what? Who is Brooklyn?' Then my brain kicked in and all was well (more or less).

At this point in time, I feel like this might be a series that I'm better off not finishing (Of course, I reserve the right to change my opinion at any time).
