Death, and the Girl He Loves

6 hrs 55 mins

The fate of the world is not something a girl wants on her shoulders, and that is especially true for Lorelei McAlister. Unfortunately for her, that is exactly where the world's fate has decided to take up residence. Lorelei has seen firsthand the horrors that lie beneath our everyday world. And those horrors are getting her friends killed. Because of this, she agrees to leave the sanctity of her hometown and is sent to a different world entirely: a boarding school.

But even here she is being watched. Someone knows what she is. What she carries inside her soul. And on top of that she's seeing visions. This is nothing new for Lorelei. But these visions are something more: death, destruction, and the end of the world. Lorelei must face the fact that there are people who want her dead, and no matter where she goes, no matter how far she runs, the lives of her friends and family are in mortal peril. Lucky for her, her friends and family include the handsome Angel of Death, a fiercely protective half-angel, and a ragtag group of loyal supporters who aren't afraid to get a little dirty in the name of fighting pure evil.

I was so excited to get to this last installment in the Darklight trilogy and I'm happy to say that it was everything that I was hoping it would be. I can't believe it took me so very long to finish it. So without further ado, here are my top five reasons you should pick up this series and read it:

1. You love a good mystery mixed in with your fantasy and all things supernatural.
2. Danger is a hot sexy guy capable of melting your panties off. Think Reyes (Charley fans) but in teenager and PG form.
3. Amazing friends that you will love every bit as much as the main character.
4. Jones' amazing writing. Let's face it, fans of her's know this woman can write!
5. An ending you can be satisfied with and that holds true to the rest of the series.

***Spoilers from Death and the Girl Next Door & Death, Doom and Detention***

Death and the Girl He Loves wrapped up wonderfully, and those last few chapters had me smiling from ear to ear. But to get there, I wasn't the hugest fan of some the parts of the journey. Especially since the first third of the book, we are away from Jared. Again. I know I probably sound like a broken record, but I enjoy books where the couple are together a lot more. So while I loved the majority of the characters, the unique twist and that fabulous ending, I still struggled a little here and there. But my favorite aspects of this final book are:

A heroine who's realistic, even though she's been tasked to save the world.
I stepped to Jared, my heart breaking into a million pieces. “It’s today, isn’t it?”

While this trope has been used countless times, I loved how relatable Lorelei was. She didn't want this burden. She just wanted her normal life back. So while she expressed her concerns about her being competent enough, she didn't wallow in self pity. Lorelei continued to step up to the challenge at hand!

Strong friendships.
".....Since when does logic enter into anything we do?”
“Exactly.” - Lorelei and Brooke

If you're a fan of strong friendships, then you'll probably adore the ones that fill this series. Lorelei, Cameron, Glitch and Jared created such a tight bond and they trusted one another with their lives. Their friendships withstood everything from betrayal, a battle, and the test of time.

A sexy book boyfriend.
Humans are unpredictable. Prophecies are not. So even though you believe with all your heart you’re going to fail, failure—” He looked up in thought. “How do they say it in the movies?” After a second, he fixed a mirthful grin on me. “Failure is not an option.” - Jared

Jared's power, knowledge, secrets he revealed, the confidence in himself and Lorelei, and a question he asks Lorelei.....aww I loved Jared!! He was commanding, confident and I loved when he graced the pages with his presence.

A fabulous twist.
Fear didn’t consume me. It was there, but it didn’t consume me. Regret consumed me. The realization that we had failed consumed me. The war was starting and I didn’t stop it.

The huge twist in this book will definitely go one of two ways for you. I fell into the category of 'oh my gosh I absolutely love this', but it definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea. Some could be disappointed per say, but while I can't explain why without giving it all away, just know that I loved this twist. It felt like a new idea to me, and I'm so glad the book went down that path!

So, all in all, this was a fun series and I'm glad I finally picked up this trilogy. It's left me interested in her other series, Charley Davidson. But I'm adding that series to my "borrow from the library instead of purchasing" list, since I had some issues with this series. And the only thing I have left to say is, what in the world happened in the woods between Glitch and Cameron?! Oh. My. Gosh. For three books we heard about this incident, and then we never got to find out what happened?! Madness I tell you, madness lol! If you have any guesses, I'd love to hear them!!

NNNOOOOOO!!!!! Why did this happen?! This book was incredibly disappointing, especially considering it is the last in the series.

First, I was hoping for more Lorelei and Jared action. Didn't happen -- at least, not by my estimate. I wanted to see their relationship develop. However, it doesn't really. They have a couple of scenes together but nothing remotely satisfying.

To top off the lack of Lorelei/Jared, the rest of the gang wasn't as present as I would have wished. Brooke, Glitch, Cameron. I missed them in this series.

Overall, it just wasn't enjoyable. Yes, there were scenes I found delightful. The BDSM-snippet comes to mind. Other than that, the book felt rushed and superficial. The ending, especially. I mean, what's up with that? The great battle was over before I even knew it had begun. I know Lorelei was prophesied to stop the war before it happened, but I was expecting more. I wanted more.

Seriously?? That was the way they ended it? All this buildup and then...that? To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. I feel like the author wrote herself into a corner and couldn't figure out how to get out so she just made some sh*t up at the 11th hour.

I hope this doesn't mean that the Grave series will have a crappy ending. If it has an ending that is.

Death and the Girl he Loves appears to be the last book in Darynda Jones’ Darklight series (or apparently a trilogy – I must have been living under a rock), and as such, it is the best one by far. The first two books have been pleasant enough, but not extraordinary or even particularly memorable. With this third book, however, I can say that my opinion of the entire trilogy and of Darynda as a YA author went up a notch.

Still, the improvement didn’t erase the fact that this trilogy felt forced from the very beginning, almost like Darynda wrote it because she felt she needed to for some reason, and never really took the time to think things through. In all honesty, I never felt that she put her heart into it like I feel with her Charley Davidson series. This was more of a byproduct, here because someone somewhere thought Darynda needs to write for a younger audience too.

The thing is, it doesn’t suit her, it really doesn’t. She shines the brightest when she can let loose, make borderline inappropriate jokes full of sexual innuendo, all of which YA simply doesn’t allow. So while this was pleasant and entertaining, it was a far cry from Darynda’s usual standard.

I suppose it took placing Lorelei into an entirely unfamiliar environment to make this series somewhat more interesting for me. I didn’t think I’d appreciate her being taken away from everything and everyone she knows, but without her grandparents, Brooklyn, Glitch and even Jared, I finally got a better sense of her as a character and I must say I started to appreciate her more. Lorelei always seemed so young to me, which is part of the reason why I never warmed up to her entirely, but this time, I felt closer to her than ever.

In the first part of the book, Lorelei is hiding in an elite school in a different state and under a different name. Then she starts getting constant visions about the end of the world and she realizes that she accomplished nothing by leaving her home and her friends. In fact, her grandparents’ decision just made things worse. So she goes back and she rejoins the Order in the attempt to stop the gates of hell from opening and swallowing world as we know it.

The final battle was perhaps a bit choppy and awkward, but it did result in what I appreciate the most – a long Happily Ever After I could bask in to my heart’s content. I think it’s fairly obvious that I have some mixed feelings about this trilogy as a whole, but I do think it’s worth reading. Even subdued, Darynda’s humor is better than most, and as I always say, she doesn’t take herself too seriously, which is a quality I certainly appreciate. Also, Jared’s really hot, so there's that to consider.

Awesome ending!!! I loved it, Darynda! Please consider writing about the characters as they mature in a "new adult" series. I am not ready to let them go.

Here it is the final days and everything is going to go switchy. Yes, switchy, because nothing will stay the same. Switching up everything is what this book does. Our heroine Lor is finally getting her powers under control and she has picked up a new really cool one that can taker her anywhere, anytime. ( I want this power) Anyway, she faces the ultimate battle, the dark is coming. Something changed while she was hiding away at boarding school something that made things worse. Her friends, family and the world will forever be changed after this day.
I look forward to see more in this series.Ms. jones keeps her characters witty, snarky and full of charm even in the darkest times.

This was a very enjoyable series to read. I loved the humor, the friendship, the suspense, the magical abilities. I was afraid there for about a chapter or two that I was not going to like the ending. It didn't end how I thought it would and the start of that ending was sad but then things didn't finish there and overall I was happy with the ending. I think it's a success when you fall in love with the characters and want more even when it ends.

Loved it.
I did not see the resolution coming that way and I effing loved it!!!
Really happy with this series in general.
My only complaint (and that's my own mess) is that no matter how many times Brooks was described, in my mind all I could see was Tina Cohen-Chang from Glee. #mybad

*MY Thoughts*

Death, and the Girl He Loves wraps up the Darklight trilogy featuring 16-year old Lorelei McAlister as the fated prophet who is supposed to somehow stop the world from ending. If you haven't read the first two novels in this trilogy, Lorelei has the ability to see into the future and the past when she touches someone. Often times these visions allow her to see that persons death which isn't necessarily pretty or conducive to not losing ones lunch. She has been possessed since the age of 6 by a demon named Malak-Tuke who is apparently Lucifer's former second in command and her guardian or sorts.

In the previous episode called Death, Doom and Detention, Lorelei was spirited out of Riley Switch, New Mexico by her grandparents who were afraid to lose her, and she landed at an exclusive Private school called Bedford Fields Academy in Maine where she is separated from her besties Brooklyn, Glitch, Cameron, and the Angel of Death himself, Jared Kovach who she fell in love with. Lorelei definitely doesn't fit in or belong there but is grateful for her eccentric roommate Crystal.

There, she is watched over by an interesting character named Kenya Slater who I don't believe had enough story time and if there was one major flaw in this entire book, it was introducing her and not allowing her to participate in the reindeer games fully like she was trained to do. Kenya, you see, is part of the Order, and therefore has been told that Lorelei will one day be the savior of the world and therefore, she needs to make sure that she stays alive long enough to do the thing that she is supposed to do, which, Lorelei hasn't a clue what she's supposed to do in order to save the world. Got it? Good.

I will say that I thought the whole idea of introducing a different setting to the series wasn't necessary. I believe that the author should stayed within the confines of what she is ideally invested in like New Mexico where she lives and where Lorelei hopes to stop the world from ending. I like Darynda Jones as an author. I like the way she introduces comedy and snark into her series and feel that if she ever stopped being an author, she will have plenty of material to make it to the big time as a comedian.

That being sad, I am a bit disappointed in the ending of this series. We sat there and held our collective breaths hoping that Lorelei would be challenged, and face her demons, and perhaps, find out what really happened to her parents who disappeared 10 years ago and then walk away with Jared by her side where they live happily ever after. When the big moment came, it left me a bit wanting. It was like history rewrote itself just by happenstance and not from anything Lorelei did that blew me away.

I am grateful that the Scooby Gang (Glitch, Brooklyn, Cameron, & Jared) were all there at the end even though it was touch and go for a moment. I would have LOVED to have Kenya join the gang once everything was presumable finished and the characters were able to move onward. I shall now go back to my comfort zone in the Charlie Davidson series and hope that that series continues onward until there is no place for Jones to go.

There's no point in summarising this book because it's the third of a trilogy. The first chapter grabs you totally, it's fast paced and interesting developments happen in order to advance the story. When Lorelei finally foresees the end of the world, I got excited by the promise of real action and a big war about to begin, but the story's progress unexpectedly stalls. Things are happening but they're not very interesting and they caused me to detach from the characters, which I loved from the previous books. I was also hoping for an epic ending, not exactly a sudden and lacking one. I liked that the needed happy ending was there, particularly the one chosen for Lorelei and Jared, but it fell short of what I imagined, I must say. After two books, I thought the third one would be filled with action and supernatural events, not filled with Lorelei trying to understand what she was supposed to do. I understand a 16 year old doubting herself, it makes perfect sense even without so much pressure, but so much self-doubt was tiring to read.

Death, and the Girl He Loves
Darklight, Book 3

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series

The Characters:

Lorelei McAlister:
Jared, Brooklyn, Kenya, Cameron, Grandma, Grandpa, Mac, a bunch more people

The Story:

This title is a misnomer. This book has very little to do with Jared (the angel of death) and focuses almost solely on Lorelei. In this final installment the war is finally here. The time has come to fight. With the aid of some new help Lorelei found while in hiding at boarding school she finds out if she can defeat the takeover of the earth. The resolution was a bit crazy but ultimately creative on Ms Jones’ part. I am sad to see our time in Riley Switch come to an end. This has been a whirlwind of a series and I am very happy about how everything worked out.

Like the characters? The plot? The story? The author? The series?

DO NOT READ THIS.

It contains the worst deus ex machina I have ever encountered in any book I've ever read and I have no idea why it's gotten such reviews.

It's a cop-out, poorly written and poorly executed. I'm shocked this is Ms. Jones' work. Hopefully after a little time I can block it out.

Vastly disappointing and just terrible. No.

You can't have an entire trilogy centered around a girl with mystical powers who is prophecied to save the world, and then end it by having her go back in time and rewrite history so the whole trilogy never happened. OUT. GET OUT.

I thought that was a satisfying end to a fun series. I can understand how the war might seem anticlimactic, but Lorelei was prophesied to stop the great war before it happened so it makes sense. I enjoyed my time with this one. I don't think it's one I'll particularly care about in the future or recommend to others, but it was some fun, mindless entertainment.

This is a little late. I thought I've posted this here.

Heart pumping and tears flowing, Ms. Jones kept me engaged the whole time. Now that I think about it, I was engaged with the last two installments as well. But Death and the Girl He Loves top it all. I remember reading somewhere that Ms. Jones was not as confident with the first book of this series when it first came out. Though I totally disagree with her, she definitely turned it around. Just when I thought the series couldn’t get better, it did and in a BIG way. Well done Ms. Jones, this last hurrah blew me away!

Lorelei has really grown as the heroine in this series. Though she is young, the “prophecy” has forced her to be more mature. In this final installment, the prophecy will come to be and the survival of the world will be placed on her shoulders. With the help of her friends, Lorelei will prove her worth.

To avoid any spoilers, let me just say that Lorelei’s friends really stepped up the game. They were there every step of the game and we even see what Jarred really is and what he is capable of. Along with her grandparents, believers, Brooklyn, Glitch and of course Jarred believed in Lorelei, though she didn’t always believe in herself. No doubt she has learned to hone on her powers but she doesn’t realize that she is so much more. Just like her crew she will step up to the plate when needed. Not without loss and pain but she will step up. My heart broke for her every step of the way.

Ms. Jones did a fabulous job with making her readers feel everything that was happening in the book. She had me crying in the middle of the night and certainly made me feel foolish trying to wipe my eyes vigorously, so I can read on. The twist and turns of this story had me at the edge of my seat, well, my bed but you know what I mean. Its Bitter sweet for me and Ms. Jones fans that this is the last installment but she had ended this series with a brilliant ending.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Chelle:
*ARC Received from the Publisher in exchange for an honest review

Death and the Girl He Loves was a nice conclusion to the DARKLIGHT trilogy. Was it my favorite of the series? No. Was it interesting, compelling, and worth recommending. Absolutely!

This installment was quite a bit more somber and serious than the previous two. Since the moment Lorelei found out about her heritage, she has known that she was the key to stopping a war, however, she never knew how, or when, and nobody could (or would) tell her. As the end draws near, Lorelei's stress ratchets ever higher, and her self doubt skyrockets. Add to that the fact that she's literally foreseen the deaths of everyone she loves and is convinced that she just CAN'T stop what's to come, and she's kind of a mess. As she and the rest of the gang try to come up with ways to literally stop the apocalypse and change fate, she systematically works through these complex layers and attempts to find her center. While I enjoyed all of that, found the seriousness necessary, and loved the journey and growth of the characters, I missed the snark and wit. There just weren't as many one liners, snippy comebacks, silly escapades and practical jokes as there were in the previous 2 books, and while my brain understood the necessity for the solemnity, my heart longed for the level of Darynda Jones snark and with that I've come to crave.

I will say this, where the book 'grew up' and swapped fun for seriousness in my opinion, it didn't turn into a stodgy old biddy shut in at home. The level of action was as great, if not better, than the previous 2 books. In addition, the suspense and surprise in this installment were amazing. The plot twist was very unexpected for me, and at first, I was honestly really confused. Then, as it was all laid out and explained, I thought it was kinda brilliant! :)

All in all, Death and the Girl He Loves was an engaging read that I would recommend. I do recommend reading the entire series in order, however, as there is just way too much history for the book to stand well on its own.

Lorelei King is a fabulous narrator. She knows how to deliver a line to get the most out of it. However, because the characters in this book are so similar to the leads in the Charley Davidson series which she also reads. I found myself thinking I was listening to Charley and Reyes half the time.

What can I say that I haven't said before about this book? I kept hoping it would improve but instead it got worse.
I still found Lorelei extremely annoying and not at all worthy of what she's supposed to be.
I was disappointed in the story and the ending was lame and anti-climatic. After all that build up to the end of the world and then bam....boring.
I'll still read the author's other series because I've heard better things about it but this one was blah. The series started off ok, and usually with character development it gets better....usually but not so in this case. The characters got more annoying and just never stopped.
Oh well, you can't win them all.

REVIEW
“5 stars!

Lorelei is the last prophet, and according to her ancestors she will stop the war that would end all wars. So you see she has humanity resting in her shoulders. No Pressure. She decides to leave her hometown to go to a boarding school, Bedford Fields. She thinks that by running away she can keep those she loves save. Boy was she wrong. Bedford Fields is not all it seems to be.Good thing she has all these superpowers and people on her side.

Then one day she sees the end of the world. All these people dying. Thats not all that happens that day though. Lorelei also gets a mysterious note from some sociopath that says I know what you are. The sociopath basically wants what is inside her, the demon. So you can guess that she is super freaked out.

She figures out who wanted her death and that gets taken care of. She knows that she needs to go back home. Thank God because by this point I was starting to miss everyone in the crew. Although, she made some allies in Bedford Fields like Crystal and Kenya. Kenya turns out to be a member of the Order and goes back home with her. Crystal sadly does not.

Lorelei figures out how bad things really are back in Riley Switch. Her and the crew get working to figure out who Dyson is. Mac her grandfather shows up to help. She discovers with the persistence of Brooke a new superpower that without her knowing, yet, will help in the guest to stop the war. She figures out who Dyson is with the help of a journal and then the day everything changes finally arrives.

Let me tell you it will be intense. Darynda does something that will blow your mind. I did not see it coming at all. I have to admit at first I was so lost it was hilarious. I totally didn't know what the heck was going on but I caught up pretty fast. Oh oh you also discover something that you would have never guessed about the demon, Malak-Tuke. You will love it though.

I have to say I loved every word of this book. I loved how the book had me guessing what was going to happen next all the way through. I loved the ending as well as how everything turned out. I loved the twists and turns that Darynda threw at me. The only thing that I really didn't like was how there was not a lot of action between Lorelei and Jared, but all the other action going on compensated for that. Plus they are finally together and turns out they have been together FOREVER. You will have to read to know what I’m talking about.

### From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up—Fans of Jones's "Darklight" series (St. Martin's Griffin) will be delighted with this final installment. Lorelei McAlister-destined to stop an impending war between humans and demons and in love with the Angel of Death-adopts an alias, leaves her hometown in New Mexico to protect her loved ones, and takes up residence at a Maine boarding school. While visions are nothing new to to the teen, her latest depict not only people's deaths but the end of the world. Lorelei is also aware that she is being followed by someone who knows her true identity (and that she carries a demon in her soul). The feisty heroine enlists her friends' help (including that of a brooding Nephilim) to fulfill her role as the Prophet, making this story line darker than the previous books'. The characters are more focused, well-developed, and witty in this entry, and the dialogue is quick and fun. Loose ends are tied up somewhat satisfyingly, and the surprise conclusion will not disappoint. Because this novel is confusing for those who have not read the earlier titles, libraries looking to deepen their paranormal romance collections will want to make sure that these are available.—Karen Alexander, Lake Fenton High School, Linden, MI

### From Booklist

Bring your orange soda and get ready for the snarkiest apocalypse ever. In this third title in Jones’ fantasy trilogy, Lorelei McAlister has been sent into hiding at an elite boarding school in Maine—as far from the doomsday events in Riley’s Switch, New Mexico as possible. But her visions confirm her worst fears: the world is going to end, and she cannot stop it. So she returns home to make her final stand with her friends and family (can you say, “deus ex machina”?). The book benefits from its trim page count and moves at a brisk pace. Lorelei still indulges in too much hand-wringing, but with the Angel of Death on her side, rapture may be secured. SWEEEEEET! For fans of this Darklight series, this is a perfect ending to the trilogy. The crew is back to help Lorelei stop the end times as prophesied. At the end of book 2, Lorelei is sent away to boarding school in Maine in order to keep her safe. But she cannot outrun her legacy and no matter where she turns, she must confront her role in stopping the destruction of the world. Therefore, she runs back home. Thank goodness!

I loved this book for so many reasons, but here are some highlights:

1. No external enemies. We no longer have to worry about the strange cult. This is just Lorelei and friends trying to figure out how to stop the end of the world.

2. Like Lorelei, I too am crushed by her burden of responsibility. Everyone is counting on her and she feels like she is in the dark.

3. There is an incredibly interesting twist at the end that I found utterly satisfying. I suspect not everyone may appreciate it, but I thought the additional tension and drama resulting from this turn was exquisite and perfectly in line with the themes of this series.

4. Despite all the drama about end times, the romance with the Angel of Death, the threat of the cult, this series boils down to the bonds of friendship. Darynda Jones could not have made this sweeter. Like I said in my review of the first book, these friendships remind me of the gang on Scooby Doo - zany, honest, troublesome, and most of all, loyal.

My one small critique is that the episode at the boarding school seems a little out of sync with the rest of the book. It sole purpose seems to be to pick up an additional character, Kenya. Don't get me wrong, Kenya plays an important role in the story, but maybe her appearance could've occurred Riley's Switch.

When I first heard that Darynda Jones was writing a Young Adult series, I wondered what it would look like. I love her Charley Davidson books for the snark, action, drama, and of course, the hot relationship with Reyes Farrow -- a lot of which is for mature (or maturer) audiences. This series shows Darynda's strengths in storytelling, world-building, and developing relationships that hits to the heart.

IN A NUTSHELL:
The perfect ending to a fun, comical, endearing series. I will miss my "Scooby gang".

I’ve been an enthusiastic fan of Darynda Jones since I read “First Grave on the Right,” from her ever-popular, adult Charley Davidson series. When she firmly planted her foot into the YA genre, I was ready. There wasn’t a question in my mind that she’d take her signature style, transform it for a younger audience, and excel. Jones has done just that and with the third installment to this series, “Death and the Girl he Loves,” she continues to entertain.
Lorelei McAlister is faced with a monumental problem—the fate of the world is on her shoulders and while teens can sometimes exaggerate a situation, this isn’t one of those times. Lorelei has faced demons, death, and destruction, but now her world is completely out of hand. She’s been sent to a boarding school with unruly, outcasts of the rich, far from her desert home and without the benefit of her own carefully chosen motley crew. And as if finding new friends and fitting in isn’t trouble enough, the death threats she receives confirm someone knows who or what she is.
The trip across the states to relocate Lorelei for her own safety is turning out to be a crummy move. Not only is she now receiving notes with hastily drawn murder vignettes, but the visions of innocents dying at the vicious hands of otherworldly beings has reached a crescendo. Leaving her home did nothing to stop—or even slow—what past prophets predicted. Now, the miles separating her from family, friends, and the ever-present angel of death seem insurmountable.
When the world’s at stake, excuses just won’t do and Lorelei finds an unlikely ally to help her return. The question that continues to haunt Lorelei is what the hell she’s going to do when she gets there. Everyone says she’s ready, but until you’re faced with the end, does anyone really know what they’re capable of?
“Death and the Girl he Loves” is another dazzling installment in an entertaining series for all ages.

I rate this book 3.5/5 stars. Darynda Jones has become one of my favorite authors. I really like her Charlie Davidson's adult series, and so I have followed her young adult series as well. I have enjoyed reading the first two books of this series. Since this is the last book of the series, I have expected a big bang finale. The characters who have grown on me in the first two books are missing in the first half of this book. I have gotten antsy since the theme has changed. I have missed the craziness of Glitch, Brooke, Cameron, and of course Jared. New characters are introduced. I am fine how the author tweaked the story, but I have expected more scenes of Lorelei and Jared since this series is really about them. Also, Jared's character is not brought out to the fullest. He is an Angel of Death for Godsake. I have expected a lot of ass-kicking scenes of him, as in helping Lorelei battle the apocalypse. On positive note, I have enjoyed reading it. It has even made me cry.
