Leading turnaround churches is one of the most pressing challenges facing every denomination in America. We know that plateaued ministries soon become dying institutions if they are not guided by turnaround leaders. Where will these leaders come from? How will we recognize them? What steps must they take to change the downward spiral? The author offers hope for a turnaround situation and explores topics such How to assess if your are a turnaround leader, Scenarios that contribute to plateau and decline, Obstacles to initiating change, and How to develop a compelling vision for the church.
A great book that was much more than I wanted it to be. I didn't necessarily agree with everything, but this book brings so much clarity. A must not just for pastors of turnaround churches, but also any pastor or leader.
I have read a few books about turnaround churches. This one is unfortunately the weakest of those. At the end of the book are some practical helps, but I felt like the book overall had a negative tone toward the church body and painted a picture of constant resistance.
Sometimes the lack of growth is not due to adversarial resistance. Sometimes the churches that aren’t growing, aren’t growing because the people are comfortable and content. They can be great, well-meaning people but they simply forgot the mission of the church.
I wouldn’t say this book was unhelpful, it just could have been more practical and more positive.
