Night shift at the clinic brings danger—and an immortal protector.
Beth Kerrigan has survived the unimaginable. Framed for her fiancé's murder, imprisoned with dangerous rogues, and separated from her twin sister, she's finally rebuilding her shattered life. As a clouded leopard shifter working the night shift at a veterinary clinic, Beth craves nothing more than quiet routine and safety.
Security expert Tyr isn't just any vampire—he's part of Lord Damien's elite clan, sent to protect the shapeshifter community in the Hudson Valley as tensions rise between shifters and humans. When he's assigned to install security systems at Beth's workplace, he's immediately drawn to the quiet, wounded shifter with the haunted eyes and gentle heart.
As anti-shifter threats escalate, Beth and Tyr find themselves working closely together during the quiet overnight hours. Despite her trauma, Beth can't deny her attraction to the protective vampire with his dangerous skills and surprising tenderness. Tyr recognizes Beth as his Chosen, but knows her scars run deep—she'll need time and patience to trust again.
Their growing connection faces an impossible immortal vampire and mortal shifter, divided by time itself. While Beth's leopard spirit makes her stronger than humans, her lifespan remains painfully brief compared to Tyr's centuries of existence. How can she open her heart knowing the inevitable heartbreak that awaits them both?
With her sister Naomi's unwavering support and Tyr's fierce protection, Beth must decide if love is worth the risk of future pain. Meanwhile, enemies close in, determined to eliminate all supernatural beings, forcing Beth and Tyr to fight not just for their love, but for their community's survival.

Beth is a Clouded Leopard shifter, new to the community where her twin lives. She’s still working through the trauma of betrayal and false imprisonment, but she’s finally ready to take a step forward by returning to work—on the night shift at a vet clinic. Meanwhile, another shifter, Katerina, has gone public, sparking a storm of controversy that brings out both the best and worst in humanity. With the heightened attention, the community decides to beef up security—and that’s where the vampires come in.
Vampires, as a whole, run a professional security company, and twins Tyr and Tobi are sent out to assess the situation. Oh, and did I mention they also build custom motorcycles? I was sold instantly. Their job is to ensure the community’s safety, documenting every detail of the buildings and personal spaces to leave nothing unprotected. Cue the chemistry as they meet Beth!
While setting up security at the clinic, Beth faces a nasty “Karen” who barges in to scream threats during her shift. Tyr is not about to let that slide. Thankfully, the police handle the situation professionally, and the town even gains an unexpected ally in the police chief. Meanwhile, Tobi is off charming a caracal shifter and her son, putting them instantly at ease. There’s also a whole volcano subplot and, hilariously, Tobi can’t cook.
The vampire lore in this book was one of my favorite parts. Their way of life is fascinating: their consorts, Blood Sworn, and pledged companions receive health insurance, paychecks, and protection—not just as part of their bond with the vampires, but also in exchange for their secrecy and loyalty in never outing them. I especially loved the detail of a Blood Sworn studying cyber security so they could join the vampire-run company after graduation—it’s such a clever, refreshing twist that breaks away from stereotypes. And instead of bats, these vampires shift into raptors, which I thought was fantastic.
Oh, and let’s not forget the giant dog—pony-sized and utterly delightful. Don’t worry, he does NOT die! His appearance is brief but memorable, and I adored him.
The tension ramps up quickly when anti-shifter groups enter the picture. I felt pure fury when those scenes unfolded, but they serve as an important catalyst for the story’s climax. The suspense builds, bursts into action, and then resolves with satisfying swiftness.
Overall, I loved this book—especially since it’s set in the general area I grew up in. Allie did a wonderful job with the cannonball factory setting, reimagining it in a way that honors its history while making it fresh and relevant. The characters, pacing, and balance of action and heart all worked beautifully for me.
For those curious: there is kissing but no on-page smut, nor even hints of it—making this fully appropriate for young adult readers.
Beth is a clouded leopard shifter. She stays with her sister and brother-in-law after being rescued from the Compound. She is now a vet tech and will start working alongside Others in the clinic. Tyr and Tobi are vampire twins who work security for the Others. Since coming out to the public, they will need to improvise a plan for the Others in Beth’s area to protect them. Tyr feels especially protective of Beth; and Tobi another working mom rescued from the Compound. They will spend their nights watching over the Others and protecting them from many threats. With other supes in the area, some encounters turn quite hilarious. Some will not. It will be an uphill battle for awhile for everyone. Tyr shows Beth a great time by courting her. When the enemies swoop in there will be dire consequences that could cost others their lives. Beth is one of them. Will Tyr be able to save her in time? Will Beth agree to his terms? Or will she rather face death? Another humorous sweet story in the series that is widely known.
Tyr and Beth’s story is another in the Magic of Wishes and Dreams series by Allie McCormack. It brings together shifter, djinn, vampire and other magical beings as the world is finding out shifters actually exist, though the others remain in secret ( at least for now ). The passion that exists between Beth and Tyr is slow burning, but strong. She and her sister are twins that had been rescued in an earlier book that I would recommend reading ( though is not necessary to enjoy this one ), Tyr and Tobi are also twins who were transformed into vampire during the “Black Death “ over 500 years prior. The story is well written and has characters who pull you in and yank at your heart strings ( Yousuf being one and NoNo being another ). My only complaint is it is a bit long and leaves many unanswered cliffhangers, which I’m sure will be answered in upcoming books. 4✨’s for a sweet read, no heat on page story.
So I didn’t want to put it down, and ended up sad when it was over because I wanted to keep reading. This book contains a lot of laughs, a lot of awwws, and some tears when it was too sweet to read without them. This book can be easily read as a stand-alone book, but is especially good if you have read some of the earlier books because you know Beth’s backstory and many of the characters from earlier books show up in this one also. The author kindly provides a who’s who list at the beginning of the book explaining many of the characters and which book their love story is featured in. Speaking of love story, this is a “just kisses” book, but that doesn’t mean the romance is lacking. There are a number of new characters in the book, I am looking forward to who is going to be featured in the next book in the series!
This PNR was excellent! it was unique and intriguing. I couldn't get enough of this world! Tyr was a fantastic MMC! While being the more serious vampire twin, he still had a boyish streak in him, too. Speed seemed to bring out the teenage boy!! Then there is Beth. She was an awesome FMC. She was very in tune with other's emotions. She was strong, especially considering all she had to go through, fiercely protective, and had a way of lighting up the world around her. This book had so many twists and turns, danger, comments that had me covering my mouth to not laugh out loud, and a sweet romance taking place around it all. This was such a fantastic book. I wish there had been an epilogue to show what life was like later. I wasn't ready for this story to end!
This is the first book by this author that I have read, and although it is book 9 in this series, I was able to follow who everyone was. Having said that, it would be best to read in order, to fully know everyone’s story. Tyr and Beth are delightful characters: Beth has had a rough start to her life and is starting to settle. Tyr and his twin are hilarious, and just how you would expect them to act out. I really enjoyed reading about their journey and learning a bit about the supporting characters lives. I enjoyed it so much I will now be going back to read 1-8 books! I voluntarily received and reviewed an ARC copy of the book.
An excellent addition to the "Hudson Valley" series
The main characters (Beth, Tyr) are very well-written, lovable, and understandable - even with their own hang-ups and mistakes.
Most of the supporting characters (e.g., Douglas, Nathan, Harper, Jacinth, Troy, etc.) have been introduced in previous books however there is more than enough in this one to enable "Night Shift" to be read standalone. (I've only read - and enjoyed - three of them, the others are on my KU wishlist.)
(I was fortunate to receive an ARC however the above is, as ever, my own opinion.)
I read this as both a beta reader and with the pleasure of an ARC and the story never failed to delight me.
One of the best stories with lots of funny moments but also serious as well a perfect blend to not be too much of one or the other. Swoony hero that loves to protect and a brave heroine that shows you can still be brave even if afraid in some circumstances.
A great blend between modern day and myth and a must read book. Highly recommended.
We have read the whole series and it has been fantastic. (We meaning my husband and I) this series had so many changes and interesting ideas that we enjoy reading the books at the same time and discussing them together! Allie really weaves a great story and parts of other books come back around again! Love this series!
A thrilling, fast-paced, and delightful read with lovely characters and phenomenal worldbuilding. I loved the heartfelt story, Beth and Tyr, their beliefs, their friends, and their love.
A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author. All of the above opinions are my own.
Also is Tobi and Layla mates or chosen? Loved that Beth became a vampire but Djinn should’ve been able to help or make her immortal without being a vampire. This book doesn’t even say if it is the end or if more books are coming.
Oh my, I think this book had it all! I laughed, I cried, was scared, happy, sad, etc. Beth has been through a lot, but found love in the end. I love this series, I hope there are more stories coming.
This is a story about a woman embarking on a new beginning. She is still trying to overcome her past but has come a long way. Then Tyr the vampire comes into her life. They are just getting to know each other when tragedy strikes. Well worth reading.
Back with shifters, vamps, & Djinn. All your favorite characters, plus new ones all gathering to protect against the anti-shifter groups. Can't wait for next installment.
The shifter community has gone public. Geard and ready for things to get rough, the long time plans to protect their world are set into action. Security alarms, cameras and more were installed at the vet and the other few places where shifters reside. Two of the bigger spots were the wolf compound and the vet clinic. The two newest members of the Hudson shifters, Layla and Beth are hired to work at the clinic. They feel safe knowing the wolves will be patrolling during the day and at night the vampires have set up to take over during the nights. Tyr and Tobi, twins, do the instillation of the alarms and that is where they meet Beth. Beth works overnight at the clinic since her clouded leopard is more nocturnal. Tyr and Tobi are there for her when things get heated. Allie McCormack has skillfully woven suspense, magic, humor with a hint of clean romance. She never fails to create a wonderful and gripping story line!
I loved it. The community is still holding stong against what they think will happen. The clinic has a couple of problems with shifter haters but it was expected. Harper & Nathan bring in a very large puppy that turned up on their doorstep. It is throwing off sparks. Troy calls Jacthyn because they have no idea what it is. She calls her Prince Keiran, they find out it is a hellhound puppy. He tells Jacthyn to call Lord Damein's half sister she is a demoness & will know what to do. She comes to their house to find out what is happeneing. She tells them she will find his mother in the underworld to rejoin them. She tells them a strong sorceror summoned him but didn't know what he was getting, the puppy ate him & got away. She comes back to the house a few days later with the mother hellhound & sends them back. One of the vampires finds his chosen but she is a shifter. He goes to the leader of the clan to see if he can turn her. Since no shifter has been turned they don't know if she will keep her snow leopard. They tell him she must be aware of all this before he asks her. Unfortunately she is shot & will die quickly if she isn't turned. She wants to know if she will lose her leopard but they don't know. She agrees. It is a rough transition but when she fully awakes later she can sense her leopard still inside her. It's amazing.
