Accidentally Falling For My Best Friend

Rate this book
Book two in the Chicago Awakening Series, this stand-alone, best friends to lovers romance will follow Oakley and Parker.
Parker

Oakley has been my best friend since we were eight. We live together, work together, our lives are completely intertwined. His past girlfriends never understood how close we are, but Oak says the right girl wouldn’t be threatened.

I’m not so sure.

Now we’re both dating a pair of best friends who seem to get it. The four of us click instantly, and for once, everything feels… easy.

But then a dare leads to a kiss, and suddenly, nothing feels easy at all.

Oakley

Dating best friends? Genius idea. Parker and I finally found girls who don’t question how inseparable we are. I thought I’d found the one, until a silly game flipped everything on its head.

Because when I kissed Parker, it didn’t feel like a joke. It felt like something I’ve been waiting for without even realizing it.

Now I’m questioning everything…my feelings, my past, and most of all, what Parker really means to me.

Maybe the person I’ve been searching for has been by my side all along

The pipeline from 'there's no way I'm into my friend, right?' to 'I need to record how he whimpers when I rim him so I can listen to it whenever I'm sad' was crazy.

Also, getting to hear the other guy's heartbeat during your love declaration because he's literally having his heart rate monitored at the time is a cheat code I didn't know existed lol.

No need to second guess yourself if you can hear his heart sing whenever you declare your intentions.

Favorite scene.

Still. I don't know why this book was as long as it was. These two are supposed to know each other so well that I'm shocked it took them this long to figure out they both wanted the same thing.

This one really could have been an email. And I only mean that in the sense that the months long wringing of hands wasn't necessary.

Their double bi-awakening was the stuff of kismet. Each other and exact same moment? Their trajectory for realizing they want to be more than friends is SO similar, it could have been one story.

There's nothing differentiating their experience. They feel the same thing at the exact same moment, want the same thing from each other, fear to speak up about it for the same reason.

Maybe this one would have hit more for me if it was single POV. I might have felt the angst over the possibility of ruining the friendship if the other didn't feel the same way. As is, it really felt like I was reading the same thing, just from two people.

And I wish the epilogue could have shown them as fathers. Usually hate kids in romance but Oakley's enthusiasm for it was catching.

I loved the part of him wrapped up like a sad burrito on Christmas morning pining over Parker not being there and wanting so badly to have a brood of red haired Parker babies calling him 'dad'.

A visual I didn't know I needed until I got it, then felt cheated that I didn't actually get it.

From friend to lover is one of my absolute favorite topics. And I can tell you that this story delivers on a high level! All the longing, the deep feelings, the suppressed emotions. You love being on the road with Oakley and Parker and witnessing their journey from friends to a couple! Their ultimate goal is to make each other happy, and their love for each other is just beautiful ❤️. I totally took these two boys into my heart! Seeing how loving and accepting both their families are is really comforting! The sexy scenes are hot and well written 🔥🌶️. Along the way, part of the story was also told about their friends Aspen and Sage, who don't have it so easy with their families. If you want to know more about this story, you'll have to wait until the fall. I really enjoyed this book and can only recommend it.

I had so much fun reading this book! Best friends to lovers might end up being one of my favorite tropes. Parker and Oakley were just so freaking cute. I love how easy and low angst this book was. Just giggling and kicking my feet the whole time while reading. Can't wait to see what's else is in store for this series!!

Tropes: friends to lovers, roommates, codependency, miscommunication, fake dating (between Parker and Aspen)
Feels: 3.25/5
Steam*: 1.75/5
Kinks: toys
Angst: low
HEA: yes
Pairing: MM
Triggers/potential icks/content warnings/representation: death of parent, diabetic MMC, hospital visits, homophobia in minor characters
Cheating between MCs: No
Any cheating: Yes. Sage cheats on Oakley
Other person drama: Oakley and Parker have been friends since they were 9 years old, but they didn't realize they were attracted to each other until they were 30, so there wasn't any OPD before they turned 30. While they are dating Sage and Aspen, they kiss on a dare and start having complicated feelings about each other. Parker isn't with Aspen sexually, but Oakley keeps sleeping with Sage for a month or two despite having feelings for Parker, and only breaks up with Sage because she cheats on him with Aspen.

3.25 stars

Parker and Oakley have been inseparable best friends since they were 9 years old. When Parker got diagnosed with diabetes at about 11 years old, Oakley but really protective of him. And then Parker's dad was killed in a hit and run accident a couple years later, and they got even more close, only falling asleep when they were sleeping together platonically. They did everything together. Oakley dragged Parker along socially, leading the way. They had their first kiss on a double date. They lost their virginity on a double date. They are now 30 and live together and work together at Oakley's family company, which is a massive company, Oakley's family is extremely wealthy. They start dating a pair of best friends and they think they'll have better luck with this relationship, because the girls are such close friends they understand wanting to spend time with their bff. However, Parker is only fake dating Aspen, because Aspen is actually a lesbian and in love with Sage but can't tell her. Turn the game of Truth or dare, Parker and Oakley kiss and start having feelings of sexual nature for each other. But Oakley only breaks up with sage 2 months later, when Sage cheats with Aspen.

There was something that I liked about this book. They were clearly deep feelings between Parker and Oakley, they cared about each other a lot. They are the type of couple that is going to have a very happy marriage and life together. It was funny how everyone around them could see that they would make the perfect couple, and they just didn't see it themselves. And it was nice how accepting people were of them.

I didn't find their love story terribly romantic though. And I didn't find Oakley that likable outside of the couple moments where he was being protective of Parker. With them not realizing that they liked each other romantically until 30, there really wasn't a lot of specialness/romance/tension, so it was a little bit of wasted potential. I really didn't like that Oakley was still dating Sage up until the 38% mark, that was just too much of the book spent with the two MMCs not having started anything yet, and having Oakley still believing that he could marry Sage and be happy until 38%. I didn't like how Parker never made a choice on his own that was about his own desires until he was 30 years old. It was uncomfortable seeing Oakley drag Parker through life, with Parker constantly doing things only because Oakley wanted him to. Once Oakley and Parker started hooking up, it made me angry how casual and careless Oakley was, and how Oakley was just so excited that it was so convenient for him to be sexually attracted to Parker and Parker to be attracted to him. I think the author made a wrong choice with how they wrote Oakley's character, because yeah he loved Parker, but the carelessness and casualness was just the wrong fit when what we needed was a sense of specialness, deep, tender, now sexual, he's it for me love. Coming off as a convenient opportunity was it.

Some notable moments:

"“We’re not together,” I explain. I know that’s not exactly the truth, even if it’s true we aren’t dating. We did agree to continue hooking up, but I also don’t think we’re supposed to tell anyone. If our friends do find out, they would assume it meant more, and that’s not what Oakley’s agreed to. “Oh,” he says sounding disappointed and his whole body visibly deflates. “Well, now I really want to ask questions.” “That wasn’t the deal,” I tease, shaking my head. “But, but, but,” he splutters, blinking up at me with big puppy-dog eyes."

"“I don’t care who I have to bribe, or if I need to claim to be family, or his partner, or his husband. I want all of that to be true anyway. So just tell me what to say and I’ll say it, but respectfully, I will be seeing him tonight. So how can we make that happen?” He eyes me for another moment before finally smirking, holding up one finger as he picks up the phone in front of him to make a call. “Hello, are you the charge nurse tonight for the ICU? I’ve got the husband for 2108 who just flew in requesting permission to visit after hours. He seems pretty desperate, but I don’t think he’ll cause any trouble.” He laughs at whatever she says, before ending the call. “Apparently, his girlfriend was with him all day. Lucky for you, the nurse is intrigued enough to want to hear more about your drama, so she’ll let you visit after hours.”"

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

I absolutely love this book! Love oblivious best friends! Oakley and Parker have been best friends forever. Meeting at a young age and hitting off right away. They think nothing of their extremely close friendship - one monitoring the other's diabetes on an app, living together when it's not financially necessary, ensuring that even when they have a partner their most important issue is how much time they can still spend with each other (just to name a few, there are many lol)

Until a game of truth or dare.

This story was so adorable and just an amazingly good time. Such a great follow-up to Accidentally Joining His Cult.

I loved that we got to see their friendship grown from the start. My absolute favorite part was from when they were kids. I bawled idk why it hit me so hard but it was such a beautiful part of their story. I got this in my kindle when I got off of work at 6am and by 2pm I was done. I devoured it! It was so so soooooo good! I knew I was going to absolutely fall in love with these 2 when I read Accidentally joining his cult last month. I had that one on my TDR for a while idk what made me hold off but as soon as I was done I went searching for this one and saw that ARC sign up was open and let me tell you i signed up sooooo fast lol now I have to wait for Adrian and his hockey player 😭

3.5 🌟 This was super cute, but I did find myself skimming quite a bit. I especially enjoyed seeing how they took care of each other as kids. It was apparent that they had a special connection, even then. I would have loved to feel more of that emotion once they started hooking up, but overall, this was a really sweet light and fluffy read.

Oakley and Parker were so freaking adorable together and I was here for every moment I got to see with them. I was not expecting to fall in love with them the way that Lexi made me do so.

I really loved how we get to see them growing up as kids into adults because it was a big part of how they became so close and codependent on one another. I just really loved how this was so well written. I absolutely loved how we get how one of them has diabetes and it was so well written how he handled taking insulin and even how his friend was trying to eat better because he felt like it shouldn’t just be him changing his lifestyle. Ugh, I was a complete goner for these two!

“𝘠𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦, 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘳. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘦. 𝘐 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘮𝘺 𝘫𝘰𝘣, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘐 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶.”

I knew this book was going to be so good when we get to the lilac shirt scene. I was a goner for these two from every little action and motion we get to see between the brat and his ranger. The spice scenes were so steamy and I was eating this book up from beginning to end!

There was one sad scene that really brought these two together so much and the way that he was there for his best friend and the mom was so beautifully written.

I loved all the side characters, especially Sage and Aspen, like c’mon, how can you not love these two? Also, the other side characters we got to see and their relationships were utterly perfect. I really loved the conversation at the end of the book between Parker and his mother because that was so beautiful.

“𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘥𝘢𝘥 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘪𝘮, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸,” 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘥𝘥𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘶𝘥𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘮𝘺 𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦𝘴. “𝘏𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘴𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘖𝘢𝘬𝘭𝘦𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶. 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘥 𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘥 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦.”

ARC Review

This was honestly such a sweet and heartfelt book. Oakley & Parker stole my heart.

I loved seeing their friendship throughout the years. And watching their relationship developing into something more was amazing.

I never thought I'd like the best-friends-to-lovers trope as much as I did. But there was just something special about this book.

Awww, I love a good clueless idiots to lovers and this one is the sweetest. Lexi Amber has a way of writing that keeps the smile on my face on full beam cause her characters are phenomenal! I’ve been waiting for this story and it is just lovely - full of connection and bonding and found family and humour and loss and grief and sexual discovery and chemistry and ultimately two very sweet men realising they are in love. Who wouldn’t want to read that!

Expect a sweet childhood best friends to forever roommates and colleagues to lovers! Basically expect them to be joined at the hip.. Parker and Oak works best that way! Here are some things I just loved:

I loved how both took care of the other

I loved the scene buying sex toys

I loved their first kiss

I loved the Demi rep

I loved the experimenting and making of lists as long as they could get them

I loved how low angst it was even when things were so serious and sometimes heartbreaking

All in all just a fantastic read!

Ps loved that Love Without Labels made an appearance and we got to see Beckett and Cody.

I cannot describe how excited I was for this book, and it absolutely lived up to all my dreams for it!!✨

Codependent best friends to lovers where they realise they're actually obsessed with one another and they fall in love is my biggest weakness. The beginning chapters where you get to watch them become friends and grow up together had me growing attached to Parker and Oakley so quickly!!

I feel like this was truly the best blend of silly giggle worthy moments, adorable sickly sweet ones, and I'm some steamy fan-your-face spice scenes

I had to have a bit of a cry at the end because the Type 1 Diabetes rep with Parker was genuinely the best I've ever read. I've never felt so seen and related to a character in the way I did with Parker because of it. It made me so so happy, and just made me love this book and these characters even more than I thought possible!

If you haven't read Accidentally Joining His Cult - firstly, why not? Secondly, go do that. And then read this one immediately after!!💜(You don't need to read the series in order, but I absolutely believe you should read them all anyway🙌🏽)

"I've never been religious, but this moment - with my tongue ravaging Parker's ass, and a toy he put in me rubbing against my prostate - feels like a holy experience."

3.25 ⭐

Accidentally Falling for My Best Friend is the second book in a series that you don’t have to read in order. Trust me — I never do.

This is your rom-com, Hallmark-style gay awakening romance where two best friends who are basically conjoined at the hip are dumb as hell and finally realize they’re into each other. It’s a classic setup with a premise that calls my name: friends-to-lovers — especially childhood friends-to-lovers — my absolute favorite trope.

That being said, this one didn’t hit me emotionally, which is usually my favorite part of the genre. It felt more like a lighthearted, fun book — which is fine — but I wasn’t fully invested in their relationship. I liked both of the dudes; they’re cool. But for how short the book is, it took too long for them to finally admit what they wanted from each other. Then, once they did, everything rushed straight to the end and the HEA.

I think it either needed more pages or less fluff. Personally, I’d vote for more pages because I love a long book that lets you sit in the emotion a bit. It was funny, though, and it’s one of those series where every male in the family ends up being gay — which seems to be a trend nowadays, lol.

Either way, it was a decent read, just not one I’d pick up again. But if you’re new to MM romance and usually read MF contemporary rom-coms, this could be a great starter book to ease you into the genre.

Oakley. His mouth on mine is the most comforting feeling I’ve ever experienced—a sense of belonging, of home that I’ve only ever associated with him.
2.5⭐I do not round up so I'm giving this a 2⭐ and we'll talk about why.

1. I had to put up with them dating females for 40% of the book. Sure, the interactions were PG-rated but whatever.
2. I had to skim a lot. You can skim literal entire pages and still not miss anything. I don't need full chapters of your thoughts.
3. I had to be annoyed at these BFF not communicating their real feeling to the point where we were like 80% in Parker is still going to Christmas with his fake girlfriend instead of spending it with Oakley. (I get annoyed easily if you can't tell.)

This had a few cute moments and a few steamy moments. I feel like it's enjoyable for people who don't nitpik like I do.

Stories where the characters start as children and progress through their lives to present day aren’t usually my thing, but when it’s done right (To Catch a Firefly by Emmy Sanders and When the Stars Fall by Emery Rose are the only two that come to mind), I love it.

Accidentally Falling for my Best Friend started out well, with two distinct characters with unique personalities sharing a special connection that grows from childhood, but once they hooked up, all of that is thrown clear out the window and the story quickly goes downhill.

The areas I felt needed fleshing out more were the conflict and the characterisation. Two lifelong best friends went from sharing everything, knowing each other inside and out, to suddenly shutting down and not communicating with each other when it was convenient for the plot. It didn’t make sense for their characters; after they hooked up it’s like they became different people. Instead of talking about their confusion and feelings, they jump to making unfounded assumptions about the other’s feelings and proceed accordingly. This would have been less frustrating if there was some conflict driving this behaviour, or it fit with their characters/relationship, but nope. Why bother setting it up that they always talk things through with each other, only to have them both suddenly stop when it counts? Why? How? Because they didn’t want to lose the other? Okay, but what made them think that was likely? There was no basis for their assumptions. So much word count was wasted on MMC’s ruminating on unfounded assumptions and misconceptions, to the point I started skimming because it got so repetitive.

Every time I thought the characters were making progress and finally understanding each other, they’d immediately walk it back. I wanted to throw my kindle every time one of them was like, “wait, no, this isn’t what this is, he doesn’t mean anything by it”.

Because their concerns had no grounding in their past experiences, they just seemed to come from nowhere. There were just vague allusions to reasons like “not wanting to ruin their relationship” without any real conflict driving these concerns. There were no previous issues with miscommunication. No pressure from family to conform to heteronorms. No insecurity from a past trauma or a parent or ex making them believe they weren’t desirable, nothing. They were just making stuff up and not talking about it. Very frustrating, and very out of character. Why go to the effort of establishing their relationship history from childhood all the way to adulthood if you’re going to make the characters do a total 180?

Parker specifically was bad with this. He was so quick to downplay anything from Oakley that hinted toward something more than mutual experimentation, even when Oakley’s actions and words proved the opposite. Parker’s reason for doubting Oakley’s intentions seems to be based on Oakley wanting a wife and kids, but this is never really shown in the story. Parker just says it as a matter of fact, but the reader is never shown. Oakley mentions how he “always figured he’d end up with a wife and kids someday” but this is only mention in passing during internal dialogue, so the excuse feels flimsy. And without it being shown, from the readers perspective it’s not clear why Parker is adamantly holding onto this? Where has Oakley shown this to be what he wants? Where did Parker get this idea? Same with his ideas about their company’s potential reaction to their relationship. Where was the basis for this? A couple of strange looks he gets from members of the board that he construes as negative feelings toward their relationship? Flimsy. The character’s beliefs don’t mean anything unless you make the reader believe it too.

And Oakley, who has never had a problem being open and honest with Parker in the past, suddenly doesn’t want to talk about his feelings with Parker after they hook up because of a vague “don’t wanna lose him” excuse, which is moot anyway because he admits he doesn’t even believe Parker would do that. Again, unfounded and flimsy.

It’s actually funny, the only character that has a driving conflict to motivate her actions is Aspen, with her awful family. I would have liked to see her confronting her family, at least to have one satisfying arc resolution in there somewhere, but unfortunately there’s only a passing mention in the epilogue that her parents cut her off.

The pacing slowed down after the midway point, I think largely in part to the amount of time the MMC’s spent ruminating over their half-baked assumptions.

The writing was heavy handed and wordy in parts. Having everything explained in pedantic levels of detail can be kind of boring to read (case in point: my reviews). If there’s nothing for me to do in a story, I get bored. A reader’s brain wants to work: ask questions, unravel little mysteries, make predictions, find those obscure connections between character behaviour and their past experiences, but it can’t do that when everything is explained in excruciating detail.

I found the fake relationship with Aspen a little bizarre after Parker got together with Oakley, especially when Parker spent Christmas with Aspen’s family. I also don’t understand why Parker lies to Aspen about forgetting his insulin on the trip. He is aware of the dangers, he could literally die if he goes into diabetic shock and nobody is around to help. It’s happened before—literally a huge traumatising event from his childhood for both him AND Oakley, so if anything he would want to tell Aspen and save her from having to go through the fear that Oakley did. But nope, he boards a plane and goes to visit Aspen’s awful family without telling her (or anyone else) that he hasn’t brought enough insulin. Why? Because he doesn’t want to worry her? Again, the character’s past experience isn’t driving this behaviour (in fact it should be driving the opposite), so this just came off as contrived for plot reasons. And how convenient that his glucose monitor is ripped out on the plane. Parker actually admits this is a real problem, but STILL (!!) doesn’t tell anyone. And he doesn’t tell anyone when he starts to get high blood sugar symptoms either. So of course, to the utter shock of no one (except everyone in the story I guess), Parker ends up in hospital, leaving the story wide open for Oakley to come along and finally have a conversation about their feelings.

I liked the cameos by other characters and events from this universe, like the grumpy older brother Beck who Accidentally Joined his boyfriend’s cult, and the dating show Love Without Labels from another of Amber’s books. They brought some much needed grounding to the story. As I found with Lexi Amber’s other books, there’s a level of detachment I feel from the world, probably due to the lack of physicality and environmental detail. Characters never seem to interact with their environments in a way that feels real and believable (or at all), so you often get this sense of them acting in a void. Even when they were holidaying in Bora Bora they might as well have been in their apartment in Chicago, for all the story showed me. Not that Chicago gets much of a mention in these stories either, despite being titled Chicago Awakenings. There’s no descriptions or landmarks to show me they’re in Chicago. That’s just how little world building there is.

After this, I think that’s it for me for this author’s books.

Accidentally Joining His Cult is one of my absolute favorite books, I'm talking top 5. So of course I was excited to continue this series. That being said, I was very apprehensive to read Accidentally Falling For My Best Friend.
Because I knew that they both will have girlfriends and I absolutely despise it when the MC has any other person, than the other mc, that they are intimate with.
I thought okay, let's power trough it, till we get to the good parts and honestly I kind of did exactly that. I didn't hate the scenes as much as I thought I would. It was okay and the friendship they all build with each other was lovely. I'm excited to read the girlfriends book.

I really enjoyed this book, not as much as ajhc but still it was a great read!

Both characters were amazing.
Parker was a sweetie pie. I loved how obsessed he is with Sudokus and puzzles, same Parker, same.
Oakley was great too, I loved his energy. Sometimes though, he annoyed me. He was way too unserious sometimes and I wished he would have joked just a little bit less.
He was also kind of bratty, which I personally not enjoy whatsoever. Again I personally don't enjoy it, though I'm sure a lot of people will enjoy his bratty sides when these two are having sex.

The book made me cry in the first few chapters. I suspected it would be emotional, but I was surprised how emotional it was.
I also thought the diabetic representation was very well done (I don't know though, it just felt like it), it was very interesting and I learned a few things.

The biggest issue I had was the miscommunication. I get it, they don't want to risk their friendship etc. but come on. It got to a point, I wanted to scream at them, to just talk to each other.

Honorable mention: Cody and Beck. Ugh I love that couple and every time Cody was on page, my smile was probably obnoxious.

So if you are debating if you should read it, I would say do it. I'm sure you will like it, pinky promise.

ARC Review
Accidentally Falling for My Best Friend by Lexi Amber
⭐ 4.5/5 ⭐

Oakley and Parker’s story was pure joy from start to finish — the kind of romance that makes your cheeks hurt from smiling but still tugs at your heart when it counts. This was funny, spicy, and low angst, but with just enough emotional beats to keep me completely hooked.

From the very beginning, I loved how inseparable these two were — not just doing life together, but truly learning and growing alongside each other. Watching Oakley dive into learning everything about type 1 diabetes with Parker (not just the signs, but everything) was so precious. Parker’s quiet sweetness paired with Oakley’s cocky, charming humor made for such a dynamic, addictive pairing. I swear, Oakley had me laughing in one scene and swooning in the next.

There were so many moments that made my heart flip, but the absolute highlight? Oakley dropping everything, hopping on a plane, and rushing to Parker’s side when he was in the hospital for his diabetes — just to finally tell him how he felt. That scene gave me full-body butterflies.

The side characters added so much flavor — Aspen and Sage especially (I need their book yesterday), and I’m already counting down until Adrian’s story. The little cameos and nods to other books had me grinning, and the banter between everyone made this world feel alive in the best way.

And can we talk about that beautiful moment when their best friends offered to donate eggs so they could have kids? I was already in love with these characters, but that scene made my heart burst.

This is one of those romances that balances humor, spice, and tenderness so perfectly that I never wanted to put it down. Lexi Amber continues to prove she can write stories that feel both comforting and exciting — and I’ll be first in line for whatever comes next in this series.

Final verdict: 4.5 stars — Oakley and Parker’s love story was equal parts hilarious, heartwarming, and downright swoony. I’m obsessed.

✎ This is the second book in the Chicago Awakenings Series and this was such a sweet and heartwarming story about two best friends who are beautifully inseparable and will literally and figuratively do anything for each other.

✎ This book is just pure joy, love, loyalty and care wrapped in a bow of codependency and unwavering respect and friendship.Oakley and Parker makes friendship looks like winning a golden ticket that unlocks all the beautiful things and experiences in life. They really are true friends through and through.

✎ Friends to lovers when done right is one of the most beautiful story you could ever read and this book was done right. The way their friendship was written from the first time they met to when they realized they wanted more from each other but that more will still be anchored by their friendship was an amazing journey to read about. They have one of the strongest bond any friendship could have, the were already emotional and intimately connected with each other so realizing that they were inlove with each other was just the last piece of puzzle that completed the beautiful love story. They’ve been through medical scares, loss and grief together and they always had each other embrace to fall into.

✎ I love Oakley and Parker so much, but with how long it took them to finally realize that the love each other more than friends, puts them in my Idiots to lovers list😭🤣.Like wake up you two and smell the rainbow because everyone else around you could smell the rainbow you two were emitting.🤣

Y’all know I have a terrible habit of reading series out of order, and yep, I did it again. I read The Reality of Wanting Him (Love Without Labels), and still have AJHC on my TBR, but when I saw the ARC call for AFFMBF, I couldn’t fill out that form fast enough. Luckily, these can be read as standalones.

I loved how this one was set up. We first meet Parker and Oakley on the day they meet in 3rd grade in Chicago and get quick glimpses into different stages of their friendship over the years. By the time we hit the present day, we already understand their dynamic and the role each plays in the other’s life.

Co-dependent? Maybe. But honestly, it felt more like soulmates, a protector-type bond. They became inseparable fast, always “each other’s person.” Nobody batted an eye when they were college roommates, then coworkers in Oakley’s family business… and roommates again. Oakley had promised, back when they were kids, to always take care of Parker and he’s kept that promise without fail.

These two were so close that they even dated girls who were friends so they could double-date and still spend time together. Sounds weird? Trust me once you meet these two, it makes perfect sense.

Everything shifts one night during a game, One kiss sparks feelings neither man had ever considered… and now can’t stop thinking about.

What follows is a hilarious, hot exploration of their sexuality and just how deep their feelings really go.

No spoilers, but I will say this, the last few chapters and the epilogues made the book for me. I absolutely loved it!

story of Beckett and Cody

This is a best friends to more romance, featuring Beckett and Cody, and is book two in the Chicago Awakenings series.

Parker and Oakley have been inseparable best friends their whole lives, but dating a pair of best-friend girlfriends finally makes everything feel simple, until a dare turns into a kiss. That single moment forces them to question everything.

Absolutely loved this one! Parker and Oakley had me hooked from the start. Their codependent, inseparable best-friend dynamic was just the cutest. Watching that one little dare flip their whole world upside down and push them to finally face their feelings was such a satisfying read. Such a sweet, fun book.

ARC Review- Accidentally falling for my best friend.. Oh I am a sucker for a best friend love story and this did not disappoint. Parker moves around a lot as a kid due his daddy’s job and is never one to make friends until Oakley comes along, they have a very interesting talk about their names and they became inseparable.. they stick by each other through the good and bad times and do a lot of the their “first” at the same time as young adults which I thought was hilarious but cute.. both never really question their sexuality until later on in their 30s when they are dared to kiss and it opens up Pandora’s box for both. I loved their whole friendship and when they finally started to look at one another in a different way it was seriously hot stuff.. Berh happy with how it ended they definitely deserved everything and more.. This book does have death of a parent so be sure to check out the triggers before reading…. Thankyou for the arc Lexi it was a pleasure Check this book out on 25/8…

Is it possible to truly, truly love a book so much so that you have no words except 'wow' and desperately want to befriend the author?

I'll tell you the answer: yes.

Accidentally Falling For My Best Friend had me in a chokehold before I even realized what was going. The two MC's love story was truly one written in the stars and now I feel like I'm apart of their shenanigans.

Honestly, Oakley and Parker's friendship-turned-relationship was one of my favorites out of the books I've read thus far. There is enough angst without being too overwhelming. The plot was solid and well developed. Their situations and reactions to said situations felt so real and authentic that I found myself so emotionally invested in the story to the point where I cried-and I hardly do over books-for joy when they finally got together.

I had the best time and definitely recommend you to read this if you love friends-to-lovers, size-difference, vers MCs, genuine connection that can be felt through the screen/pages, with a side of goofy best friend fun.

Lexi Amber, again showing me that she can do no wrong!! Let’s gooo bestie! Ohh these precious oblivious idiots in love! I had a great time with Parker and Oakley - even with how dang frustrating they were!!! The lovedddd to decide they already knew what the other one was thinking/feeling and thus shenanigans ensued. There were tears - especially in regard to their childhood traumas. These boys were so clearly soulmates and I was rooting for them to just sort themselves out. Loved the ending and how everything turned out. Cannnot wait for Adrian and his studly hockey captain roommate. I even am looking forward to reading Aspen and Sage’s story - and I thought I would like them! Turns out I did in fact like them and was rooting for them too. Yay for love!

Who doesn’t love a bestfriends to lovers story. This novel was so enjoyable to read.I especially enjoyed how Parker & Oakley's friendship was laid out in a clear timeline, without the constant back and forth.I thought this made their story & connection feel more natural and easy to follow.
Parker and Oakley were both incredibly lovable characters (and complete idiots for not realizing sooner just how much they meant to each other!).Their story was made special by the way they were each other’s safe space throughout their lives, always there for each other in  pivotal moments.
This book was the ultimate feel good read that leaves you smiling.

I went into this book knowing it was going to be an easy-to-read humorous story. I was NOT prepared to cry in the beginning when we get to witness them as children, becoming who they are to each other. The amount of emotions Lexi Amber pulled from me was unexpected but not unpleasant. I really enjoyed this book. I wanted to bop their heads together a few times because they took the info in front of them and added it together wrong in their heads a few times but I understand why they did. It felt like it fit them and their situation and they're just so dang lovable it's hard to hold it against them. While these men were bad at communicating, they sure were good at experimenting. It helps that their connection was strong since day one.

If you are looking for a book to invest in, this book is for you. You'll laugh, cry, groan, smack your forehead, and grin the whole way through.

Parker and Oakley find themselves facing some real truths after a fun little dare. It’s always a dare

I have to say my favorite trope is probably best friends to lovers ! And even better is always idiots to lovers lol

They’re pining for each other but don’t wanna say anything and wreck the friendship. But they’re both literally thinking the same thing!

I love how easily Oakley accepts his newfound sexuality. And the deeper look at Parker’s, it’s always nice to see ace/demi rep

Thanks so much for giving me the opportunity to arc read this novel !!

More than friends

What is better than falling in love with your best friend? According to this book and these two characters absolutely nothing. I fell in love with this author from b the first book in this series and was blown away that it was their first book! And to follow it up with another banger like this one! Keeping them coming and from that epilogue I have a feeling on an upcoming story is that particular hockey player
