She sees him in her dreams; dreams that are sometimes dark, sometimes full of light and hope. No two were ever the same and yet they all leave her with the same yearning, tempered with fear. One thing is for certain, in her dreams there's always danger....
Mild spoilers here This story was actually very good. Yes at one point it did sound a little like Twilight because in both stories the heroine moves back with her father after being with her mother. The hero is a mystery guy in her high school that everyone wants who looked older and the heroine in both drive an old pickup truck. Both heroes leaves the heroine with no explanation in order to protect them from being hurt. (Honestly that's it and when you look more closely it was only very superficial). In comparison, twilight Bella's thoughts and feelings can't be read by Edward and in this story Jasmine's thoughts are very easy for Thorn to read and explore. In this both the MCs have a connection from birth and that's how most of his behavior is explained. To me this was not enough to say it was a Twilight rip off. Firstly,it's about magical warlocks and witches. Secondly, it's about fate and betrayal. They are fated to be together and his parents did him a grave injustice making him leave her at a young age. He was forced to do things that many reviewers have said is being unfaithful (he had sex with women for his country), but I did not see it like that at all. He was manipulated and had no choice in his life path at this time. To me he was faithful to her. Every part of him was for her. He always held himself back before her. I can understand the whole spy angle thing. I enjoyed this book but the explanation of their past and everything around their families had me reading it over and over. As it was very confusing writing and the grammar was so bad that I had to re-read it so I could make sense of it all. I would have been a 5 star read but it was confusing and needed a better editor. So I can't give it all plus I wanted an epilogue. I love an epilogue!
This turned into a surprising 2.75 "melodramatic" stars read for me. Part of that rating is in the complete 180 of my previous experience with this author.
I just really wanted to read something that was completely different from everything else I've been reading lately. PNR is a new genre for me. This was recommended by a client and I couldn't figure out why until I discovered what the fuck was happening with this plot.
I enjoyed the whole storybook fairytale feel to this. The writing style and flow helped it not feel in touch with reality. It wasn't the greatest, but I was able to ignore the issues. It could have been "worst" ;)
I've never read the Twilight series. Hell will freeze over before that ever happens. Two of my sis-in-laws lost their ever-loving minds over it and I just couldn't get on the bandwagon. So I don't understand the references in other reviews to this being like Twilight. So all the fan-fic huffing and grumbling means jack to me. I almost consider this a plus as fewer books have ticked me off as they have my fellow reviewers who aren't happy about some book just being more Twilight fan-fic. ((I'm still trying to get the whole 50 Shades vs Twilight thing as well...I mean was Edward spanking poor Bella, too?))
I thought this was my first Jordan Silver novel. It's actually my second. I'd forgotten how suck-tastic "Tryst" was. I even created a new shelf for that shite: arrest-his-ass. So the good thing is that this was a shit ton better. That ain't sayin' much ;)
I had no idea whose POV it was in parts of the beginning of this novel. It shifted so bizarrely at points that I first thought the person who killed and raped the h's grandparents was the H...that was a fucked up moment, let me tell you. Warning: it was way WTF and kinda graphic (just a few paragraphs).
Also, there were some reviewers that were angry about his OW...this is such minor background noise of plot. There are never any scenes or implications of this with OW present. It's 2 or 3 random sentences in a couple of paragraphs. These are passive references. He calls his sexual training abuse, mentions he hasn't been with a woman since he brought her back, and occasionally has to sleep with women for the government (he's kinda spy-ish ?), it also sounds like he's never fucked an OW just cuz he wanted to...I can live with that. He's totally devoted. He's also 7 years older and she's nearly 18. [[And here I thought there'd be much more complaint over the fact she's a minor and he's 25. But, whatever. Priorities, I get it ;) lol.]]
In the end, this was truly a cheese-tastic delight of a fairytale. But I never got the point of the title and I don't know that I'd recommend it, it was just a bright spot in a week of bad reads.
"Holy Crapoli" - my 11yo says this - I thought she was the only one on the planet that said this, now I have to go burst her bubble...LOL.
Fave quote
“Thorn’s reaction though was a little concerning. He gritted his jaw and glared out the window and I could’ve sworn he said something under his breath. I started to ask him what he’d murmured but just then the sky cleared up completely and there was actually sunlight now. I looked from him to the window but in the end I shook it off, what was I going to do, accuse him of controlling the wind?”
I didn't understand this book at all. I usually love Jordan Silver books with her alpha males, but this was the worst of it.
Also, I noticed that she uses the words 'worst' and 'lost' incorrectly. She will say something like 'That is her lost' instead of 'That is her loss' and 'That was worst' instead of 'That was worse'. Am I the only that notices?
From the moment Thorn sensed Jasmine there was a connection that was undeniable. Of course at a young age no one realized the magnitude of what was to come between them and they were separated. Jasmine sees him in her dreams, on the verge of turning eighteen Jasmine makes a drastic change, she goes home to her father. The time has come to make Jasmine's dreams a reality but Thorn has other ideas about the time frame on which Jasmine will learn all causing a disturbance in their newly fund relationship.
This was a bit different for Jordan Silver. While I read the references to comparing Illicit to Twilight, I thought it had enough differences to make it it's own story. Thorn is intense, liked him as a hero. Would like to see more of this style form Jordan Silver an intriguing read.
The prologue had potential, however, when it turned to Chapter 3, I felt like I was reading Stephenie Meyer's Twilight…, then when all the mystery was solved, the story ended suddenly. And I didn't even know where were those villains in the middle of the story? I didn't get it because Jordan Silver often let the villains approach the heroine or hero. This book was so not like her works.
As much as I loved alpha possessive heroes, this author is either HIT, or MISS for me.
Well for a change, I'm on a fence with this one!
It was good for the most part but the ending was MEH.
All the dreams she was having.. the soft breeze or warmth in the heroine's neck and ears.. feeling that she's being watched.. (heck! I could go on and on!) Anyways the plot/scenarios in this book is pretty much like the book/movie of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight.
I enjoy reading fanfic but would prefer if its a well made one.
This is a Jordan Silver book I really, really liked--until the 85% mark. I loved that it had a Gothic vibe to the story, and it is written along the same vein as Passion with a Twilight undertone. This book was edited much better than Ms. Silver's previous work, although it still had some noticeable errors, but I enjoyed reading it without having to insert punctuation and trying to figure out where one sentence ended and another started. The vulgar language was also much tamer in this story, so that was another positive aspect in my opinion.
I really thought this was going to be a five-star read, but the ending was very rushed without explaining a lot of freaky behavior. Things just kind of occur out of nowhere and leave you reeling with a What just happened? feeling. It isn't anything awful per se, just inconsistent with the rest of the story. The other major issue I had with this book is how a 25 year old man is in high school. He sometimes goes to class and interacts with teachers and students, sometimes changes his schedule or skips class, and nothing is ever explained about this behavior.
Besides those two complaints, I enjoyed everything else about this book. I recommend it to those Jordan Silver fans who also liked her book Passion, but with the caution that it diverges into a paranormal, Gothic read. It's a new genre for Ms. Silver to tackle, and I found it to be an enthralling book.
i think this blurb alone should be a 1 star. had it been clearer, i would have passed since it's of a genre that i do not read.
i loved the Lyon's MC, Spitfire series, Talon's Heart, The Daughter in Law. so what the heck did i just read?
i don't want to give anything away. the story swept me in enough, but that ending?!?!?! it was information overload for me, too much too late to wrap my mind around & then *bang, story over... the end.
That was terrible, entertainingly terrible. It's like a disaster that you couldn't help but see to the end regardless of the cringing and the pain that it inflicts. Holy fuck I can't believed I finished reading that! The characters were like.. the worst I've ever read and I've read thousands. Holy fuck!
Thorn and Jasmine. I'm confused on one account, isn't Thorn 7 years older than Jazz? So if she's about to turn 18yrs shouldn't he be 24 or 25yrs? And if he is 25yrs, why is he still a high school student? Because of this oversight I started to give this one 4stars but because I will be rereading this one and I will recommend this ebook it gets the 5 star treatment. But an insta-love from the womb. Yeah that's a new one. Supernatural beings. Oh and the murder scene, at the end it was poison but the blood and darkness when it happened. I don't want to give away that scene but confused. And how did Jazz come to be with her parents. Covid19 had me finishing this story in 2 days I couldn't put it down.
This is an unexpected departure from Jordan Silver's typical style. There isn't a lot of cursing, and there isn't a lot of sex. In fact it doesn't happen until about 80% of the way through the book. However even with the more developed plot, the ending just didn't work for me. There was so much set up for a potential showdown, and it ended in a lot of talking. Also something that bothered me was the fact that the heroine went missing after the attack on her grandparents and then the story time jumps to years later. There's no real story about how she got rescued form her abductor. It's all talked about at the end.
Ok I really like the paranormal aspect of the story and the all intense need for each other, but I do wish it had a bit more of Jordan’s alpha maleness. Although the hero portrayed some dominance it definitely wasn’t as much as her heros usually do and I missed that. Also, believe it or not I missed more intimacy, then just the 2/3 times in the last 10% or so in the book. I also have to say I did feel like I was rereading Twilight at times, it just had so many similarities to that novel.
this is like an odd mix of twiilght, beautiful creatures, and every stereotypical supernatural romance.
honestly, i just randomly stumbled upon this book. i kept reading out of curiosity to see how it would end. it never got better and i'm sure some would agree it progressively got worse. still, i made it to the end. i wonder what that says about me...
The story is a little weird. And in typical Jordan Silver fashion the guy(24) has an extensive sexual history even though he knows about his mate(17) and loves her since they were kids. The other women are just bodies that don't count. 😀
So he grew up with her, then they were separated. But they are connected by fate as mates. The guy is from a magical Russian family line and there are ghosts. The girl has no backbone and zero self-respect.
I have read literally dozens of Jordan Silver’s books. I absolutely love them, but I was 50 out of 230 pages into this one and still had absolutely no idea what was happening at all and gave up. The book description was vague at best but I looked at several reviews where people said this was one of her best but I beg to differ. This is the only one of her books I have ever DNF’d and I hope it stays that way!
Twilight fan fic. Better than Mr Grey at times worse than Mr grey at other times and completely like Edward all the time. Except for in better than everyone vibe he has going on. **spoiler***
Completely didn’t get the whole I seduce woman for my government thing it just felt thrown in there . Otherwise can’t wait for breaking dawn . Where their kid falls in love with Mina 🤣
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
If you are familiar with Jordan Silvers book then this is another book to add to your collection...but if your new than please know this book is AWESOME! Give it a chance and don't be to rush to judge...I LOVED IT
I didn't understand this book at all. There were no clear details on what this story was about. This girl has dreams and then he comes and I'm like why. I don't know I was confused most of the time.
This book was odd and confusing. I stopped at 21%. Each section/chapter seems to change POV but its not labeled who is thinking. I had a great deal of trouble following this story. By 21% I gave up...way too difficult to follow and the writing was so simplistic. Not for me.
One word. Bizarre. Russian telepaths and a serial killer raped an old lady before cutting her head off. Or did he rape her after? Can't remember now. The whole book I was saying wtf.
The beginning is confusing and complicated... but if you can make it until it starts to come together, it is worth the read. It's not a normal Jordan Silver book... but after you put the pieces together, a good book.
Some expressions were wrong (bide my time not bait etc) and some typos throughout. But her alphas are yummy and her love stories a delight. Lots of fun and definitely inspired by twilight (but I like better).
Hmm... it was okay. It could be much better though if they prolong the plot, add some mystery/history there. But as this came from Jordan Silver, I did not hope too much.
