A book about a death cult shouldn't be this cozy, I have zero doubts that if one of these characters showed up to recruit me, I'd fall for it way too easily. Sure I might be a bit put off by the bones and branding and you know, it being some kind of death cult, but then there's also a small village with kinda sweet villagers who bake bread and don't let strangers wander in? I mean, how bad could it be? (hello cult leaders, don't try to recruit me, I'd be very bad at everything I promise)
Anyway, where to actually begin this review? I don't even know. It was so good, that I'd like to quote the whole thing and be done with it, but you know, then you might as well just read the book yourself instead (which you should anyway).
So we have Kit, and Penny, and a cult they want to destroy. Kit who has been told over and over he's not good enough, and Penny who is feeling like he's failed his family once again. At first glance, they seem like complete opposites. The grumpy guy living alone not wanting to be bothered by anyone, and the chatty, warm, friendly young man who smiles at everyone and who is bound to drive our grumpy darling mad before the story even has time to properly start.
Kit, who sees danger and enemies everywhere, who knows how cruel the world can be. And Penny, who wants to see the best in people, despite knowing not everyone is as kind as he is.
"Penny was too earnest to be a liar, and I hated that I had to forge him into one."
The perfect setup, isn't it?
But then they start to get to know each other, and they get to find out that they aren't so different after all.
“You and I are alike, in more ways than I realized. We’ve both endured suffering and come out of it new.”
To infiltrate the cult they will need to go through things that no man should have to endure, and while Kit knows what awaits them, he doesn't tell Penny right away. To begin with he decides to use Penny as a way to be welcomed back despite being gone for so long, but as time goes and things shift between them, Kit knows what he's doing might be unforgivable.
"He’d come seeking an easy answer, a quick solution, and instead, he followed me like a sheep to slaughter."
The deeper they get into the grasp of the cult, the more dangerous it will be. How much will what they will have to go through change them? And what will such a cruel world do to a gentle soul like Penny? Will Kit be able to leave it all behind once again, or will this ruin him forever?
"If I lost my soul in the process, it was a small price to pay to save the world."
So what did I think of this book?
Well. I spent a lot of it crying, meaning I also spent a lot of time spamming the poor authors with my updates on Instagram. Who will end up on their mute list for next release? Zarlina. No doubt. (No, these authors are lovely. Really lovely. They care so much about their readers and that itself is such a wonderful trait. They calmed my anxiety over being late with this review in such sweet ways, I almost didn't even panic the last few times I tagged them lol)
Anyway;
The story is full of pain, angst, danger. The characters need the cult members to trust them while they also need to make sure not to lose themselves in the process. And I'm already worried for where this will lead, especially as they start making friends with the villagers who they will one day have to betray. Or will they save them? I believe it can be messy, and I'm so here for it.
I spent so much time being in pain for both Kit and Penny, and when I read the part of them taking the first oath I had to pause just to sob my damn heart out for a bit. And when one certain character started to try to make Penny believe his awful words about him I wanted to throw the book in the lake. Which would have been bad because I read on my kindle and those are expensive. And also then I wouldn't have been able to finish it and read about Kit being an absolute darling making the pain ease a little.
At times I wanted to scream in frustration, AND delight. Because some parts were so brilliant it almost took my breath away. You know when words are so beautiful you just need to sit there and stare for a bit? Yeah, that was me. A lot.
And chapter 16? I was at work, doing the night shift where everyone in the building but me were asleep, and I wanted to literally yell a I KNEW IT, because while I saw it coming, it was so perfectly laid out. Stunning. I was so happy. Not because it was a happy part of the story, but because there's just something about the way some authors write those scenes that makes me proud over someone I've never even met, and this was one of them.
Perfection.
Anyway, I'm rambling a lot. Writing reviews clearly isn't my strongest suit. I don't think you can learn anything from what I'm trying to say, so let's just get to the part where I tell you to read this book because you will not regret it for a second. It was such a gorgeous read and I already can't wait for the next one. Only downside of starting a series early, now I have to wait for the rest, and I already miss the characters so much, I don't know how to stand it.
Read this book. You won't regret it.
