The Book of the 22: The All-American Caliber

Rate this book
More than 3½ billion 22 rimfire cartridges are pinged away every year in the United States. The 22 is king in the U.S., and a favorite around the world. Used universally for myriad tasks – from plinking at tin cans and downing cottontails and squirrels to eliminating pesty varmints and protecting explorers, campers and military personnel. THE BOOK OF THE 22: THE ALL-AMERICAN CALIBER tells all there is on every 22 rimfire and centerfire cartridge, from the diminutive BB Cap to the Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR), and from the mild 22 Hornet centerfire to the powerful big-game 226 Barnes. Sam Fadala discusses the arms that fire these cartridges – the handguns and rifles that will make every 22-caliber shooting encounter a success. THE BOOK OF THE 22 is a comprehensive guide to shooting that covers 22 rimfire games (including Olympic competition), target shooting, benchrest and silhouette shooting, rimfire and centerfire varminting, backcountry and survival situations, big-game adventures, and home and camp protection. THE BOOK OF THE 22 is a reference every household should own. Because at some point, you or your teenager will ask about the appropriate firearm to use for a particular situation – to which the answer will ultimately “Why don’t you try a 22?”

This book is like YouTube reviews of the .22 before...well...YouTube.

I bought this book back in November of 1999 after having checked it out of our local library several times. It was such an enjoyable read and covered the topic of the .22 so well, I decided I needed to own it.

My personal thought on this book is that it is still a good purchase and good read, but you will want to do some searching online for a good used copy. I've seen them as cheap as $9, but upwards to $90. I paid $14 for a new copy back in '99. It's out of print, so used is your only option.

If you like shooting, hunting and/or plinking, grab a copy. It's well written by Sam Fadala and incorporates some nice images of ammo, guns and general shooting.

Specifically, I really enjoy the .22 LR. It will do most any task you ask it and not break the bank. If you own a .22, you will enjoy this reading this book. If you don't own one and buy this book, you will end up buying a .22 handgun or rifle...or both.
