Never Wrong

Rate this book
Blurb:

Jeff was raised to believe love between two men is wrong. Or is it? Can love ever be wrong?

When Jeff meets the much younger Dean, he only knows he wants him, consequences be damned. But things are not as easy, especially after Jeff's ex calls and announces big news.

And Dean? He thinks the new neighbor is hot, but he's not interested in something more than a rebound fuck. That's what he tells himself, at least.

But lust isn't a good basis for a relationship, more so since Jeff isn't sure whether he can deal with being gay.

Love is never wrong, but can Jeff accept that?

I picked this book because it was a May/December romance, and I have an affinity for them. I was not disappointed on that front. However, this book did leave a lot to desire. Most of the characters were flat, except the main character, Dean. Dean seemed like a sixteen-year-old rather than a twenty-two year old. He was stuck up, selfish, self-centered and spoiled. I really didn’t enjoy his character much at all, and the entire book was from his point of view.

I also had issues with the plot. It’s rare that I find a book where there are so many subplots going on and not enough words to have them make sense, but this was definitely one of those books. We travel all the way from plot A to plot Z with a jumble of plots in between. I think because of the lack of time spent on letting the plot points linger made some of what happened in this book unbelievable and unrealistic for me.

The advantage to this book is that it was well-written. I just felt as though the execution could have been done better. Had the entire plot with Cheryl been eliminated, I do believe this story would have been excellent for the length of the novel and would have fit the timeline created better. That was also the most unbelievable part of it for me.

I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

The overall storyline was a nice one, nevertheless this book gave me problems. Somehow from the blurb I expected it to be told from the POV of the older guy. That wasn't the case. That was minor, but the biggest problem for me was that I didn't feel the chemistry between both MCs. They were attracted to each other, yes. but they didn't talk much and every time they talked they either argued or landed in bed. It appeared as if they seldom settled anything. Or it was off page and there was a time break. There were several of them, afterwards filled with one or two sentences of what both men did in the meantime - it would have been nice to read about it and follow them along while they tried to get to know each other or build a relationship at some point. Perhaps then their developing love would have been more believable for this reader.

So I stick to 3 stars.

Two recently separated men meet and are attracted to each other. One has been straight his whole life but questions this. His ex-wife is pregnant but doesn't want the baby. This brings the two men together, but not without arguments and insecurity from both.
I didn't really love either main character and dutifully finished the book.

This book is mostly about Dean, not Jeff, despite the blurb. Dean is a young guy who just got dumped by his older boyfriend and moved into an apartment of his own for the first time. In the process of moving in he meets Jeff, a guy 20 years his senior, who lives in the same building. Dean likes older guys and is at first bummed because he thinks Jeff is straight but then psyched when Jeff kisses him.

Jeff is a cop who was in a relationship with Cheryl for 11 years and just recently decided to break up with her because he thinks he’s gay (though he hasn’t had any male relationships yet). He meets Dean and is immediately attracted to him, but thinks he’s too young and Jeff has a hard time committing to the “gay” part of himself.

Dean and Jeff start a “relationship” but warily because Dean is on the re-bound and Jeff is exploring gay sex for the first time and neither are good at communicating with the other. Jeff is also hit with a shocker from his ex-girlfriend (she’s pregnant and it’s probably Jeff’s) that makes him question what he’s doing with his life.

Luckily, the attraction between the two of them is strong enough to try to make a go of it, because Cheryl isn’t done with her shocking news and the couple end with a HEA and a new family.

**
First, let me say that the writing style of this new (to me) author was good. There were a lot of meaty ideas in this story and it had some great potential. However, there were so many plot difficulties that I couldn’t give this a great rating.

For one, I didn’t feel a lot of “love” between Jeff and Dean, even at the end. They didn’t do much together besides have sex so I didn’t feel great about their relationship. Jeff was worried about their ages but I never saw that issue really resolved. Dean felt Jeff wasn’t really committing to him (Jeff wanted to share in parenthood but was reluctant to even move in with Dean) and that issue was never really resolved either.

Another difficulty I found was that I felt that Jeff’s transition to being gay wasn’t explored very well. I really thought there wasn’t enough introspection or discussion of his previously “straight” categorization and that his wishy washy relationship with Dean wasn’t enough to convince me that Jeff was fully invested in the new lifestyle.

I also thought Jeff’s parents acted very strange, as did Cheryl. I can’t imagine her behaving as she did (both with just wanting to abandon her child and not telling them the ultimate truth about the pregnancy).

I thought the whole child thing was not realistic at all. Both Jeff and Dean were very cavalier about having a baby and seemed to do little to prepare for it and there was no discussion at all about how any child would be taken care of. I also couldn’t understand why Jeff wouldn’t want Dean to move in with him if they were committing to parent Cheryl’s child together.

One last small gripe… the gay “virgin” sex with a younger more experienced guy… it should have been great – lots of stuff to work with in terms of fantasy material – and it ended up being pretty lackluster.

So…though I liked a lot about this story in terms of potential, I don’t think it fulfilled it’s promise.

This was a very enjoyable and engaging May to December romance. There are a lot of dynamics in this stories and a lot of odds stacked against Dean and Jeff finding their happy ending. Both the reader and the characters are in for quite a ride.

For starters there’s the twenty year age difference between them. Something Dean is actually delighted about since he prefers older men, but also something Jeff has issues with. The fact that Jeff has up until recently both ignored and denied his attraction to men doesn’t make things easier and neither does the news that Jeff’s ex-girlfriend is pregnant and doesn’t want to keep the child. Throw Jeff’s mother’s obsession with social niceties into the mix and it is hardly surprising Jeff isn’t entirely sure about himself, Dean, or the future.

I liked that the way each character dealt with the situation they found themselves in, clearly illustrated their age and the difference between them. In general Jeff had the bigger picture in mind and while he occasionally concentrated too much on all the possible pitfalls that didn’t take away from his measured outlook on life. Dean on the other hand does everything with the enthusiasm of youth; he throws himself into his drinking, his loving and his arguing without a lot of thought and even less restraint. And yet, despite all the differences between them and obstacles on their path, Jeff and Dean work together and you, the reader, want them to come to their senses and work it out.

If I have one regret it is that we only saw events from Dean’s perspective. I would have loved a peek into Jeff’s head on a few occasions. Not so much because I felt I missed information – the dialogue between Dean and Jeff made sure I didn’t – but just because I’m curious that way.

This was my second book by Chris McHart and I’ve enjoyed both of them. In both stories the author managed to completely draw me into her character’s lives, and that’s all I ask for when I’m reading. I’m looking forward to whatever may come next.

Never wrong is a sweet romance about two men just getting out of a relationship. Dean caught his boyfriend in the act of cheating. He moved into a new apartment building to begin a new life.
Jeff left his girlfriend of 11 years because though he loved her both were unhappy and he need space to explore his feelings.
The moment Dean met Jeff he wanted him but thought he just wanted a rebound roll in the hay.
Jeff was really struggling with some hidden feelings but as much as he wanted Dean he had issues with the 20 year age gap.

This is a very sweet story. It started out little slow for me but towards the end picked up. There was actually a very memorable scene with Dean cooking for Jeff that had me rolling in the floor laughing. I totally fell in love with Dean. Though Jeff is more my kind of man…Dean won my heart. He is young, sweet, naïve, charming and all over a nice man. His personality really shown through the story. On the other hand. I liked Jeff but would have liked more from him.
The story line is good but a typical romance. There is a small twist that I did like the way that was handled.

So all in all this is a good Feel-good short story. If like a good sweet romance with a little twist, two broken men, friends to lovers and Older man-younger man this is definitely for you.

Reviewed by Brandilyn for Prism Book Alliance. Age gap romances can be good or they can squick the reader out. When one MC is basically half the age of the second, the author has to work to make the reader believe there is more to the relationship. Part of convincing the reader can be done when convincing a reticent main character. That is exactly the challenge Chris McHart meets in Never Wrong. This was a sweet story. Told in the POV of 22 year old Dean who is in lust that grows into love with a 40 something Jeff. Jeff has A LOT of baggage and we can only hope to find someone like Dean to make our lives better. Dean too has some baggage (Don't we all) but none in comparison to Jeff. The age was a huge factor in this story for the characters and it shows in how they acted. All in all it was a cute, happy story!

I loved it.

The characters are likeable.

They both want the same thing –each other, but they have to work through their individual issues in order to tackle the obstacles that life throws at them.

There were misunderstandings and hastily drawn conclusions but these are expected with every new relationship.

They fight, they persevere and they endure, because Love is Never Wrong.

I like age gap relationships if they are well written and this one is. It is a fast paced and touching exploration of age difference. It is all a charming book - I loved the characters and the touches of insight into their lives.
