🧛🏻‍♀️🩷| the first book was toooo good. a second book in the same world with different characters?? count me in🫡

I was really looking forward to this one after loving The Shop of Little Grand Curiosities, but this one just didn’t impress me.

Once the Ravenors arrived at the castle, it felt like there were way too many characters thrown at me all at once. I had a hard time keeping up with who was who, which made it tough to get invested in the story. On top of that, the pacing just dragged. I kept waiting for something to happen, a twist, some tension, or *anything* but most of the book felt slow and kind of uneventful.

The romance was another letdown. It felt like I was told there was chemistry rather than actually feeling it. Their connection seemed forced, so I didn’t care if they ended up together or not

The whole book: “I will never let him go again” “I will never let her go again” then proceed to ignore each other over and over

It’s not the worst thing I’ve read. There were a few interesting moments and the setting had potential, but overall it just didn’t hold my attention (kept drifting off thinking about what book I’d read next 🥲). Definitely a bit of a disappointment after how much I enjoyed the first book💔💔💔

Literally every single time Iris Lake writes something, I know I need to take off work, cry, laugh, giggle, spiral into delusion—basically go through the full spectrum of ridiculous emotions. That’s how magical her books are, and A Vampire Castle in the Sky is no exception.

We return to the world of the Faraway North, but this time we’re swept into a haunted castle in the clouds, one filled with whispers of childhood memories, deadly secrets, and the kind of grief that reshapes your soul. At the heart of it all is Thea Valentia—a girl forced to leave behind everything she knew, only to cross paths again with the vampire prince she once called a friend.

What unfolds is a beautifully dark, whimsical journey through vampire society where love tries to bloom in the shadow of grief, betrayal, and a fate that won’t let go. This isn’t just a reunion story—it’s a reckoning. They’re not strangers, but they’re no longer the people they once were either.

This book made me giddy with joy, laugh out loud from the banter, and ache deeply from the emotional realism Iris Lake writes so well. The story is soaked in grief but glimmering with magic and hope. The darker elements—death, vampirism, bloodlust—are perfectly balanced with cozy, almost fairy-tale-like wonder. It’s a gothic fantasy for anyone who wants to feel everything and come out the other side changed.

If you want a story that’s rich with emotion, layered with mystery, and dusted in magic and memory—read this.
Highly, highly recommend!

The story went from fairytale to meet the crazy vampires to murder mystery to duel to whatever even was that to neck-romancer joke (💀😭) and I loved every single page of it!

Anyways this book is mainly about grief from loss of a loved one and it's beautifully written so please give it a chance I promise you'll love the jokes 🥺

i am completely and utterly bewitched by this story. i expected to enjoy it greatly, after i found the first book delightful and very entertaining, but it still managed to positevely surprise me. it was a perfect whimsical and cosy tale about two dumbasses in love. the chemistry was intense, the way they supported each other made me very emotional and i overall just adored how well they complemented each other.

in addition, i just generally loved thea and hector as individuals. their journey of grief, discovery and acceptance truly moved me and i was rooting for them and their happiness with all my heart. i could not be more pleased with the way these two managed to find their own paths.

with that said, i have to mention that it wasn’t perfect; for example, plot-wise, the fake marriage didn’t make any sense. i also didn’t love the castle’s pov (i don’t like seeing any non-human perspective in general). however, in this particular case these things did not bother me. i was so engaged in the story, so invested in these characters that it didn’t impact my overall enjoyment of the book whatsoever. i was fully absorbed from the start and despite a few limitations, the atmosphere, the characters and the way the story was written, fully satisfied my preferences. i cannot wait to read more from this author.

yet another iris lake book to add to my favorites !! i will always look forward to new releases !

returning to the faraway north with a new tale was as splendid as i imagined ! the magic of this place and the author’s prose swept me away during my mundane road trip.

the topic of “forever” vs. “finite” will always pull me in. this story does a wonder of perfectly grasping the joys and sorrows of each and weaving them together to create splendid characters that live in a world built on this structure. whether they were human, immortal, or a little bit of both— they were all handed the question of what it means to be who they are and are expected to find out the answer by living.

we find a setting seeped in grief— a boy and a castle mourning the loss of the warmth they once felt within it. a girl who brings along the memories of a childhood and the hope of healing. though they are both not exactly as they used to be, their hearts still recognize one another amongst the layers of being separated by time.

i absolutely adored their story. will be reading again when i order my physical copy to annotate and set it on my shelf like a trophy.

AND LIVING IN A SENTIENT CASTLE IS THE DREAM ??? IM MOVING IN ?????

Iris Lake is officially one of my favorite authors 👏🏼 After falling in love with "The Little Shop of Grand Curiosities", the first 'Tale of the Faraway North', I didn’t think it could get any better but "The Vampire Castle in the Sky" completely enchanted me.
In her author’s note, Iris says this story isn’t brilliant. And okay, maybe it’s not brilliant but it is PERFECT for what it’s meant to be. The characters, the setting, the banter, the pacing… everything just clicked. And don’t even get me started on the writing 🥹 Her storytelling feels like a warm hug. The kind that makes you want to curl up with a couple of poems in a rocking chair by the fireplace 💌
This particular story read like the most heartfelt love song, full of beautiful metaphors that hit you right in the soul. Honestly, it’s a mystery to me how she keeps coming up with these beautiful word combinations 💫
I’m already counting the days until her next tale!!
Take this as your sign to start reading now or else you’re truly missing out…

i absolutely adored this fairytale, it was the perfect mixture of magic and what it is to be human

it truly felt like a story that people would tell little kids and i felt like a little kid being absolutely in awe and captivated by this love story

the love between Hector and Thea felt so raw, so magical and yet so humane and so beautifully imperfect and i loved every moment of it

the way this author writes is perfection for me!

the story felt so relatable in so many ways, and i feel like Thea needs to be like a therapist or something because the way she thinks and understands and moves through the hard stuff is so moving like i teared up, and shes so wholesome, and so incredibly witty

also the complexity of Hector and how human he was even tho he was a vampire was so refreshing to read - he didn’t feel like many mml where its just all girl’s fantasies in one guy, like he felt real? his yearning, his devotion, his unwavering love for thea, i neeedd and how he actually showed and talked about his feelings? like his emotional maturity was insane like Thea definitely did her thing

their love was so…organic in the best way? like so pure, so real, so sweet and so beautiful

also the castle?? my babyyy🥺 it just didnt want her to leave and it didnt want to be alone oh my god its makes me cry

anyways, i wish there was a chapter showing like 20 years kater when theyre old with kids✨

I liked this because the writing pulled me in from the first page and didn’t let go. But the book had a bit of an identity crisis. It couldn’t decide if it wanted to be YA or NA, and the result felt like lukewarm tea trying to be both iced and hot. The heroine was just there. Her arc had potential, but nothing really came of it. The hero carried the whole thing, and honestly, I loved him. The romance felt underutilised, overshadowed by everything else going on, and got buried under too many subplots. It felt like wasted potential. The ending felt rushed and didn’t give any insight into their future, which sucks. Still, I’m curious to see what this author does next.

This style of writing just speaks to my heart. So whimsical and romantic, but with enough story to entertain. Hector’s devotion is the stuff of dreams.

God I love anything Iris Lake writes, and this book is no exception. I get lost in the faraway north world with every book and find it hard to leave once it’s over. I adored Hector and Thea and how gothic the setting was, I haven’t read a vampire book since my tween days with Twilight and was delighted to feel nostalgic while reading. The grief in this was heavy, but so beautifully written. Will be eagerly awaiting the next book! 🌹

What a beautiful book! This read like a fairytale for adults. A Princes Bride kind of narration, rich and entertaining, but with adult themes ( I think this is why some people have trouble placing this book as a NA or YA. This belongs in a category of its own because the writing is truly so unique and enchanting and honestly isn't this the point in picking up a "whimsical" book? For the uniqueness of it all? Not everything has to fit a certain label as though art is a product.)

Hector was one of the most well-written characters I've read in romantasy while Thea was perhaps the most relatable. I loved their banter, I loved their tenderness, I loved their introspection. It was such a gift. I can't wait to read more from Lake.

The setting is amazing, and the magic system is fun. I was a bit let down with the characters and the romance. Everyone seemed a bit juvenile, and in the end, I wasn't really convinced of the chemistry between the leads. However, the writing itself is whimsical and imaginative and had me hooked ✨️

I definitely enjoyed The Little Shop of Grand Curiosities more, but I also could not put this one down. I was pretty good at seeing who the bad guy was this time around, so proud of myself for that. A shame, but necessary. I’m ready for the next book in the world of the Faraway North.

P.S. the authors note about Eron had me shedding a handful of tears.

I loved it, but such a deceiving end ! I wanted them to be happy and terrorize the vampires as their rulers in the powerful magical Castle, not transform it in a Babel Tower of sorts!

2.5/5 ⭐️ Not what I expected, and unfortunately I did not really like the characters, but the concept I thought was great. Overall, not for me, but I see the potential. (I went back and changed my review because I felt bad and my initial review sounded way harsher than what I intended 😭)

I loved, loved, loved this one! It was so original and refreshing, cozy and at the same time thrilling. I’d never read anything like it. The connection between Hector and Thea was beautiful, unique and a true slow burn. It’s the first time I’m actually enjoying friends to lovers so much. I loved the world building too. There was so much that went into the back story of the Castle and Hector’s family history as well as his dynamic with the other vampires it was very impressive for such a short book. I think this proves that good storytelling doesn’t need a thousand pages. At the end you feel warm and satisfied. Everything ties perfectly and there is nothing unanswered. Hector and Thea are one of those couples you know they’ll make it through everything.

I really want to read more stories from Lake. I love her writing and the way she alternates between simplicity and poetry. Also I think she handled the theme of grief very beautifully which kinda makes me want to read some litfic from her.

Anyway all in all a great read.

This was so cozy! I am a big fan of Iris Lake, so I was very excited when I saw another tale from the faraway north.

We have the story of a sentient and loyal castle with a grieving heart, a seer brave enough to face vampire society but not to trust her own heart, and a half human-half-vampire soon-to-be-sovereign who doesn’t quite know how to love. This beautiful (but hot mess) trio go on a journey of self-discovery together.

I love the unique take on the existence of vampires and their society, the relationship between the castle and its friends, and the callbacks to the first book (this is a standalone but you will appreciate the crossover if you have read the first book). As always, the prose is beautiful. I didn’t expect to love the castle so much, but it almost reminds me of the TARDIS. It is, after all, of the stars. But somehow it is lovelier.

Give this one a read. My words certainly won’t do it justice. There’s vampires and magic, grief and love, friendship and betrayal, a few steamy romance scenes, and a lot of healing.

4.0 stars - wow. i loved this book. genuinely one of my top reads of this yearrr i loved it. granted there are some things that were meh but i still had an amazing time. i will say i agree with others about how the story was more telling rather than showing. but i do think it worked due to the nature of their relationship. i just wish there was more context to theas side of things. like we basically know his side but not so much hers. like did she always love him but denied it ?? cause it sounds like it was but also wasn't? idk loll but besides that i loved how grief was portrayed, the drama within the castle, and the betrayalll ugggh it hit me so hard. like the book would be goofing around and then all of the sudden id read some of the best lines about grief or their love and id just get consumedd into the book.. like im still thinking about this line like atp just choke my heart out

“The girl you loved,” I rasped, both numb and aching all over. “Not love?” Hector pulled himself together, returning to his usual sharp- edged reserve. “You shouldn’t have come, Thea,” he said steadily. “There is nothing left for you here.”

3.5 very cute

This give old school once upon a time fairytale vibes with a ghibli esque spin. I enjoyed it and finished it in a day, it was a nice cozy break from the dark/ epic fantasy I usually like reading. I wanted to pick up something light and fluffy , something with whimsy and a focus on romance. This hit the spot for me.

Where this missed the mark for me was the mystery aspect that was added, it was fairly obvious/ pieced together at the last second who did what. I felt like the relationship between the FMC and the MMC was very cute and I wish the book just stay on that. Instead the addition of the other characters felt more like plot devices that came in and out when needed same with the world building.

I would recomend this as a quick cute read but dont expect much development outside of just the two main characters.
