Life and love in Alaska, The Cheat. Francis labels herself as "fat and forty". How in the world she came to be living with the guitar player of a popular Alaska band is a wonder to her. Monte is a groupie magnet and Francis is waiting for him to tell her it's over. The text message she gets from him after getting home from a gig, sets off a major fight when Francis accuses Monte of being a cheat. She fully expects to be looking for another place to stay before the evening is over. What she doesn't expect is Monte's refusal to let her go.
Although born in New Orleans, I am proud to call myself an Alaskan. I have lived here for 37 years, I have survived -40 degrees, hauled water, made bear bacon and live in a cabin. I used a fish wheel to catch salmon coming up the Copper River. I was my second husband's chief mechanic's helper and only roadie. I cut firewood on shares, worked as a cocktail waitress, then as a paralegal for over 26 years. I hold the #80 press card as a reporter for the Copper Valley Views newspaper which ceased publication in the 1980s. I've been writing stories since junior high. Retired now, I can devote my time to what I love. I came to Alaska by way of Arizona and California. I experienced the building of the pipeline up close. Then my second husband and I moved to Wasilla to get warm. It hardly ever drops past -25 in South Central Alaska. I never thought I would love it so much I never want to leave. The beauty of Alaska is a draw I cannot resist. I love the people and the history. I have been captured by a place I came to under duress. Life does play some interesting tricks on one. I lost my first husband to alcohol. My second husband, the love of my life died as a result of disease. We were not apart more than 24 hours for 20 plus years . I never wanted to be anywhere but with him. He was a man to run the river with.
MacFarlane’s, The Cheat, is a fun read in a quirky kind of way. The two main characters, Francis and Monte are extremely lovable and true to real life. The characters are well-developed exhibiting all the insecurities and flaws that plague us as we search for true soulmate. There’s Francis, an ordinary paralegal, believing she’s fat and forty, and Monte, a popular guitar player with a local band, who thinks Francis is “fancy" fabulous. But there was no convincing Francis of that. She has no confidence in her ability to have and keep Monte; after all, she’d been down that road before and had lost her husband to the town tramp. So her self-confidence had taken a beating, all she was waiting for was for Monte to tell her it's over. Things took a different turn than she’d expected and poor Francis was having great difficulty accepting the obvious. This was a quick, fun and interesting story. I read it in one sitting.
The Cheat is a fun little story that had me laughing all the way through. Even though infidelity and divorce are not funny subjects the author has a way of making the mood much lighter. I love her spunky style of writing and her good whit. Makes for a very easy, entertaining read.
There are unexpected moments and a clever storyline that had me reading as quick as I could. Curiosity got the best of me. This is a quirky love story that had me wanting more. Much more!
While this is a novella it's a all in one package. Loved it and how well it played out in 27 pages. Loved the characters would've loved to know more about them but this novella has the perfect set up for those two. Quite impressed and really loved how feisty she was lol.
This story is short but real. It has real life tragic truths and no candy coated sweetness, just truth about how it was and is . I felt like I could relate. I read this in order to provide an honest opinion on this story.
