Elder Races #6.5-6.7

A Dragon's Family Album

Rate this book
Listening Length: 8 hrs 6 mins

This collection contains Dragos Takes a Holiday, Pia Saves the Day, and Peanut Goes to School (two novellas and a short story in the Elder Races series, previously published separately). All three stories focus on the Cuelebres, the First Family of the Wyr.

Dragos Takes a Holiday: When the Cuelebre family heads to Bermuda for some much needed R&R, it’s no ordinary weekend in the sun. Between Pirates, treasure hunting, and a baby dragon… what could possibly go wrong?

Pia Saves the Day: The Cuelebres have moved to upstate New York where they finally have the space to indulge their Wyr side, and Liam can grow in safety. Their idyllic situation is shattered when Dragos is injured and stripped of his memory. Without Pia’s taming influence, there’s nothing holding back Dragos’s darkest side.

Peanut Goes to School: Dragos Cuelebre is no longer the only dragon. At just six months of age, Liam has already grown to the size of a large five-year-old boy. In an effort to give him a taste of normality, his parents enroll him in first grade. But school has a surprising number of pitfalls, and Liam is fast becoming one of the most dangerous creatures in all of the Elder Races.

I write paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and other stuff. I taught myself to read when I was four. That was around the time I tried to ride my tricycle to work. I wasn't sure where work was, but I knew it had to be interesting if people went there every day. Now I combine my love of books with work, and I don't have to ride my tricycle to get there. My Elder Races series began May, 2011. You can also find me on Twitter and Facebook!

This book contains 3 novellas, which I'll review individually because I feel very differently about each story.

Dragos Takes a Holiday - 2 stars. BORING! This was all about how they're so happy and make decisions together. Domesticity is NOT why I read PNR.

Pia Saves the Day - 3.5 stars. The best story of the lot. There was an interesting conflict and I loved seeing more of Dragos's dragon form and what he's really like. There wasn't a quick resolution at the end, so I'm assuming this issue will come back to haunt Dragos in a future book.

Peanut Goes to School - 1 star. I hate what the author has done to Peanut. Having him grow up so fast is just super weird. (no matter the justifications about all his great magic, blah, blah). The whole plot was so over the top...he immediately finds bullying schoolmates and abusing teachers which he stops on his first day without killing them all because he's good. **Throwing up now** I really hope the author is not planning to have Liam grow up in a flash and get his mate in a future book. That would be disgusting, no matter how she spins it.

I've been dissatisfied with this series for a while so it's likely that I'll let it go. Nothing interesting has happened in the last few books and if this is what we'll keep getting, it's clear the author has nothing left.

My goodness, I was so pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed visiting with the amazing Cuelebre family. Pia, Dragos, and Liam/Peanut are truly the heart of a world that is filled with monsters. Family is usually not a theme in most PNR/UF wherein those world are generally filled with self-absorbed, angst-filled immortals. Inasmuch as Pia and Dragos are the only characters that I actually like in the Elder Races series, I decided to give these three stories a read when the collection showed up as Kindle deal. I loved the journey.

In "Dragos Takes a Holiday", it was nice to see Pia and Dragos takes some time away form the hectic pace of the city. Also, it was cool to learn more of Peanut's skills inherited from his mother. This little guy is going to give Dragos some hard times as the baby dragon grows older.

In "Pia aves the Day" things seemto be going well for this cpuple until an accident happens and Dargos loses his memories of Pia. It was heartbreaking when an injured Dragon (in dragon form) takes a swipe Pia then flies away. Pia showed her inner strength as a true heroine when she unflinchingly confronted the dangerous dragon to save him and the Cuelebre empire.

"Peanut Goes to School" was my favorite of the three stories as we see Pia and Dragos try to give their rapidly growing offspring a chance to be a child, go to first grade and socialize with other children while he is still a boy. I loved when Liam asked the little demon girl to be his girlfriend for a week. Because in another week or two he'd be a teen! It was not all light and fun, Liam was put in a situation with school yard bullies and he showed that he was Dragos son. I look forward to reading more about Pia, Dragos and Liam as he grows into his dragon.

I loved these stories. They were quick fast reads that let us catch up with Dragos and Pia and of course the peanut. My most favorite story was Peanut goes to school. I love Peanut and Pia's reactions to him are priceless. I cannot wait to get more stories about him. And am really hoping that we get his love story at some point in the future. It sure should be interesting
My other favorite story was Pia Saves the Day. Was very emotional but liked the ending.
I bought this with own money and thoroughly enjoyed it so I gave it 4 stars.

I really enjoyed all three of these. "Peanut Goes to School" is a testament to Ms. Harrison's ability to write different characters - the only other child in the series thus far is a wretched brat with a tendency to spoil for me whatever story she is in. Peanut's POVs are nothing like that; I found him great fun, and credibly written.

Reading these was also something of an experiment, to see if I can get away without reading the Aryal/Quentin book. I probably won't have a final verdict on that until I read the next full-length title, but so far it's working out fine.

This family is amazing. And every time they go somewhere something has got to happen.
But there is always somebody to save the day :)

Dragos takes a holiday, elder races 6.5
Pia and Dragos and peanut on vacation (kindle $2.99) I’m not sure I totally buy the character of Peanut/Liam. The character is just a bit too convenient. And his rapid, irregular growth is awfully plot handy. Regardless, this is a cute little story, and it is good to see Pia, Dragos, Eva, Hugh again.

Pia saves the day, elder races 6.6
Pia and Dragos and Liam (peanut)
This short story packed a lot of story into few pages. There is a major incident with Dragos, and it completely resets Pia and Dragos’ relationship, actually his relationship with pretty much everyone. The angst is good in this one. And Pia shines as an amazingly strong person again. Glad to see more of Eva, Hugh and getting to know Gray a bit more.

Peanut goes to school, elder races 6.7
Interesting vignette, featuring Peanut, aka Liam. The plot felt a bit forced. This bit is not a romance, it covers Liam’s first day in school.

Story:

Dragos Takes a Holiday (3.5 Stars)
This story was good but not my favorite. I liked that they got to go away for a bit. For anyone to really screw with them at this point is pretty ridiculous to me. It was an okay story though.

Pia Saves the Day (5 Stars)
This was possibly my favorite story in this collection. It made Dragos seem more human with what they went through. I liked everything about the story and that it wasn't easy.

Peanut Goes to School (4.5 Stars)
This story was completely adorable and I loved it. I really wanted to know more about what would happen with Peanut and School and have him experience more classrooms in a short period of time. I liked it all the same though.

Narration: Sophie Eastlake. I like her.

Dragos takes a Holiday 4 Stars
Hunt for treasure on vacation in Bermuda had me dreaming of pirates, fae and dragons. It ended decent but I wanted more.

Pia Saves the day 2 Stars
I did not like this one compared to all the others in the series. Pia seemed reckless in my opinion. Dragos character seemed very one dimensional. I was surprised by Liam’s growth.

Peanut goes to school 4 stars
My favorite of all the stories watching Liam’s development and exploration of the world around him. I loved how Peanut stood up for others and was thoughtful of others. I can’t wait to read more of his character development and how his abilities manifest thanks to his mixed blood.

Three beautiful stories of Dragos and his family, it's heartwarming to see him and Pia have a family, a unique, very special one with this precious little boy... all of them made me laugh and cry but my favorite is Pia saves the day. I always was a fan of her but after that? I couldn't love her more!

Hermoso!

Dragos takes a vacation was my least favorite story. It was boring for me. My favorite was Pia Saves the Day, although I'm really not sure if she saved a 'day'. Lastly Liam goes to school was ok. Interesting to see him growing and coming into his 'powers'.

This collection (of previously/separately-released stories) is a 'must buy' for those just discovering the richly-imagined world of Thea Harrison's Elder Races, as well as for readers who've loyally followed Dragos, Pia and myriad other primary/secondary/side characters over the past...*gulp*... 8 years.

It's even more of a no-brainer because as of this review's posting (18 Jul 2018), it's still free. (I got my copy mid-May so thank you, Ms. Harrison!)

'Dragos Takes a Holiday' provides an intimate look at the personalities & dynamics within the Cuelebre household (which includes personal bodyguards Eva & Hugh) and packs a wallop for a novella. We see Dragos's growing frustration as Top Wyr offset by astonishment (lol, still!) with his little family, Pia's continuing maturity & deepening closeness with those around her, and OMG! POV from the Peanut! This novella was fun to read when first released, but re-reading via audio made it even more heart-warming & hilarious. The series narrator, Sophie Eastlake (aka Julia Whelan) did an outstanding job (IMHO, on par with 'Oracle's Moon')—even now, I can hear her narration re: the Peanut's first shift, his 'toofers' & his hunger. *chortles all over again*

'Pia Saves the Day' finds the Cuelebre household re-located to upstate NY where everyone (but especially the Peanut) has more space, both physically and mentally. A construction mishap provides the impetus & focus for this novella—namely, a major hurdle which tests Dragos & Pia's relationship and brings about some unexpected changes.

'Peanut Goes to School' is primarily from Liam's POV. He's growing up in leaps & bounds, partly due to Dragos's accident in the preceding story. This leaves his chronological almost-two-yr-old self struggling to control his powers & understand the world around him, whilst his parents (well, mostly Pia ^.^) fret and hover and fret some more. Liam's behaviour & reactions to events at school provide a glimpse into what kind of man he's on course to become. I can't wait...and dare wonder/hope Marika returns in some fashion? :-)

Even though these stories take place in the middle of the Elder Races series, they concentrate on a specific set of characters. Thus, I think that they can be read & enjoyed without the backstories in preceding books.

I was so excited to see this set of three novellas be combined and then offered for free! I've love the Elder Races series since the beginning with Dragon Bound.  It was a real pleasure to come back to the lives of Dragos and Pia in Lord's Fall (book 5). Now I am thrilled to go on with the changes in their daily life in A Dragon's Family Album which gives us more insight to parenting and their new son, Liam.

Dragos Takes a Holiday: I loved this view into their daily lives and especially to know more about Liam. I don't know how anyone could not adore this baby. They had a fun, terrifying, exciting, eventful holiday!

Pia Saves the Day:  We see the true nature of a dragon's personalities and the steadfast strength of Pia's love for her mate. This had plenty of dangerous and frightening twists. I found it unsettling and fascinating.

Peanut Goes to School: Liam is so young, only 6 months old, but he needs to get into the world and socialize with others. In his first day of school he deals with bullies, a mean teacher and gets a girlfriend! It's too cute.

I totally loved these novellas and getting to know Liam better. Dragos and Pia have their hands full with him growing and learning so quickly.  Their family dynamic is awesome. If you read the series, you must get this - especially as it is free!

"While she talked, he made a mental note to write a large check for the public library system. If Pia and Liam enjoyed going, he would make sure the library could provide them with anything they wanted."

A Dragon’s Family Album by Thea Harrison

“Dragos Takes a Holiday” (Elder Races 6.5) Dragos takes Pia and Liam to Bermuda for a short getaway. While there Dragos will do some treasure hunting, but considering who they are, trouble quickly follows. Plus everyone's hands are full as the Peanut is shifting. So adorable. I love getting to catch up on the original lovers throughout the run of the series. Liam will be a handful, considering he is a combination of talents from Mommy and Daddy. 5 out of 5

“Pia Saves the Day” (Elder Races 6.6) Since Liam is growing so fast, Dragos and Pia are moving out of the city. There is lots of work that needs to be done to make it theirs as well as giving the sentinels a place to live. An accident during blasting injures Dragos badly enough to wipe all his memories away. Pia goes after him, hoping to heal him before it is too late. There is a sadness with this story as there is not a full happy ending. That doesn't mean that Pia and Dragos don't stay together, but changes will have to be dealt with, both by Dragos himself as well as the rest of the group, family and friends. I look forward to how the next story will handle this healing. 4.5 out of 5.

“Peanut Goes to School” (Elder Races 6.7) Liam, outwardly looking like a six year old, is sent to first grade despite not being more than two years old. While there he learns about bullies, bad teachers, and acquires an older girlfriend. And he also worries whether he might be bad. The boy is really coming along, obviously confused by powers and talents that no one could possibly predict. At heart he is a kind young man who has much of both his mother and father in him. 4 out of 5.

I have been dying to read this collection and see more Dragos and Pia content for a long while. And now that I've gotten over the obstacle that was Kinked, I devoured this.

Dragos takes a Holiday was super cute and funny. I loved seeing Dragos and Pia away from daily duties and especially experiencing Dragos as a hands-on dad as that is unfortunately often missing in Fantasy heroes that have kids. I really liked seeing Eva and Hugh again, and the Peanut's POV was surprising but adorable.

I am a sucker for amnesia in one of two lovers, so ever since I glimpsed in the description that Pia Saves the Day has Dragos getting amnesia, it became like catnip to me. It was the novella I was most eager to read and turned out the best one too. With amnesia romance you never really know which route the author will choose, but this was everything I wanted it to be, I adored it, even teared up a bit.
Just the ending with the Peanut's sudden growth spurt saddened me a little, why does he have to grow so fast?

Finally, Peanut goes to School was also enjoyable and fun but definitely my least favourite of the three stories. His thoughts are both entertaining and fascinating for such a little guy, and I loved seeing Pia go all mama bear. But it's still sad that he went from Mommy and Daddy to Mom and Dad so quickly.

Now I'll have to soldier through book seven, eight and nine to be able to read A Dragon's Family Album II. I can't wait!

Dragos Takes a Holiday
Pia maneuvers Dragos into taking a vacation in the Caribbean. Chaos ensues, naturally.

Pia Saves the Day
I had forgotten about this one - it has a major plot point that is mentioned multiple times in subsequent books. It’s kind of traumatic to read about Dragos’ accident. It is amazing, as always, to see Pia take charge and kick ass.

Peanut Goes to School
A short short. Liam tries grade 2 for a bit. And, being his parent’s child, gets into all kinds of trouble. No romance here, instead, a cute kid who is growing physically and mentally at an incredible pace.

Dragos Takes a Holiday
I love how Pia gets Dragos to suggest a holiday. I love that she appealed to his treasure loving dragon. Watching Peanut’s continuing rapid growth is amusing too.

Pia Saves the Day
She really does in this one. The story’s impact was more profound for me this time. She loves him so much, and helps him when he doesn’t know who he is.

Peanut Goes to School
Peanut, aka Liam. You just know he’s not going to have a boring time in school. He sure doesn’t. I liked the story, which is more of a vignette, and isn’t a romance, per se.
