This was reviewed for My Secret Romance Book Reviews (www.mysecretromancebookreviews.com)

As a historical romance goes this one had all the right ingredients. There was a rugged, yet sensitive hero, damsel in distress (who is, of course, a virgin), impossible situation that they need to be extracted from. Unfortunately they are not all put together in a way to make this a memorable book.

The leading man is part of a Viking marauding crew with an admitted erectile dysfunction. This is kind of a mood killer for a romance novel. I believe this may have been a way for the author to present a reason why the tough viking did not just take what he wanted when he first captures his damsel. What it really did was make me say "What?!? A viking that needs viagra?".

Another issue that I had was the information given about the characters does not line up with how they act. The heroine is a witch, a powerful one, but can't get out of the ropes binding her. She can throw things across the room, but not untie herself. The vikings are marauding people who rape and pillage, yet they never rape or pillage anything. Every now and then a historical thing like "berserkers" or a "blood eagle" (think silence of the lambs) is thrown in the text haphazardly to give it some History street cred. It was just too random to make sense.

If you enjoy Historical Romances as steamy, bodice ripper, entertainment stay away from this one. If you like weird plot holes, and wimpy vikings, this one is for you.

Can Odaria really trust a Viking?

Odaria has never been able to trust a single soul on her small isle. Though she lives as an outcast, her life is relatively peaceful until the village leader, Brennan decides the village needs to be “cleansed” of Odaria’s witchcraft by burning her alive. When Odaria calls down a curse on the village, she didn’t expect a band of Norsemen to come charging out of the shadows, but will the brutal raiders be her savior or her downfall?

Odaria is a very brave and strong woman. She has lived her entire life on the isle where she was. Since her mother’s death, she has been alone in the world, with the other villagers only coming to her in secret when they need her magic to help them. With the way Odaria is treated by the others, I couldn’t believe she had never attempted to leave the isle. However, Odaria is far too stubborn to admit defeat, even when it becomes clear she’s in grave danger.

When Rothgar enters Odaria’s life, she feels an immediate connection to him. The attraction is mutual, and it isn’t long before the sparks start to fly. However, Odaria and Rothgar are both very strong willed, and are constantly bickering and butting heads. Despite their intense fights, Odaria and Rothgar also share some moments where they both open up about some very personal and private details of their lives. Their vulnerability is quite touching.

Ms. Wilkins also did an excellent job of building the sexual tension between Odaria and Rothgar. Though they were certainly attracted to each other physically from the moment they met, they weren’t able to act on it right away. I found the interruptions to their romantic interludes very amusing at times. Consequently, Odaria and Rothgar were able to form a strong emotional attachment. When Odaria and Rothgar were finally able to act on their feelings for each other, the timing felt perfect.

I do have to say that the conflict between Odaria and Rothgar at the climax of the book didn’t feel entirely genuine. I can’t say much without spoiling the plot. However, I will say that Odaria is led to believe something terrible about Rothgar. I find it very hard to believe that Odaria would lose faith in Rothgar so quickly after they had shared some very intense, personal, and private moments.

Still, Ms. Wilkins did a great job of depicting the brutality of the time period. Both the Vikings and the Picts had very cruel ways of dealing with enemies that made me shudder, and I am very grateful that I have never witnessed such violence first hand. I do wish there had been a bit more depth to Brennan, the main villain in the story. Brennan simply comes across as an evil man misusing religion for his own purposes. I can’t help but wonder about the deeper motives behind his actions and what drove him down the path he was on in the first place.

Overall, I enjoyed reading The Viking’s Witch. Odaria and Rothgar are entertaining characters and their romance is beautifully written. Fans of spicy historical romance should certainly give The Viking’s Witch a try.

This book starts out in the thick of thing's, the main character is charged with witch craft, and though she has never denied her heritage, she refuses to admit to the evil deed's being thrown her way. So she is being escorted to the pile of wood which is intended to burn her alive with.

Using what she believes to be her last breath she summons down a curse on the villager's, which just so happens to be the Viking's who lurked nearby.

I think the author played it well, creating a chance circumstance that could build on the power of Odaria and Rothgar and the love that seems to bring them together. They don't have the easiest relationship, trust issue's, a slight language barrier and the fact that she is in the middle of a blood thirsty Viking nest that have come in search for a prince that might have washed up on her shore's and might be dead.

With her power can she find him, can she keep the man that has kept her safe since his arrival on the island and can she believe in the vision's that come in her dreams?

I enjoyed the book, the event's were a little choppy, but over all it flowed really smoothly. I liked that they struggled for their love, it wasn't one of those, love at first sight ordeals. Lust on the other hand...

So I do suggest approaching this book with caution because there is plenty of steam ready to fog up your glasses when turning the page of this book?

I also loved the fact that the evil villain had gone mad with his hate and prejudice. That is so often the case in real life that it was great to see it in the written word.

A love story with heat and fire

I loved the book! The characters really touched me on so many levels. The story brought in much of the violence of the middle ages and the Vikings. I was wrapped around this story from the beginning!

This book is set in my favorite era. I love reading books set in the Viking or Dark Ages. I have wondered why authors do not write more in this time period. There is so much history and information to write about it is amazing. I quickly grab any book about this era without thought to the genre.

Odaria is a witch. She knows it, the villagers know it and at one time no one cared. That is until one man who is suppose to be the leader and head of the church decides that God has told him to remove the witches from the village. I will never understand how man thinks that God is approving killing someone else.

It is night, Odaria has been held captive by the leader of the village for several weeks. Odaria is being dragged to a pyre. The village is going to burn her alive. As Odaria is being tired to the stake she starts cursing the people and trying to chant a spell that brings up a demon to help save her. The only thing that comes out of the darkness is a group of Vikings.

There is not a lot know about the Vikings. Sadly there is not true full-blooded Vikings left. However this leads to so much imagination about this race of people. To me this race of people would be an author's playground. To have some bit of history that very little is known.

I read this book very quickly. I guess that speed reading class I took in high school has really paid off. Of course I have been off work due to surgery so that has helped. However, if you enjoy reading about the Dark Ages, Vikings, mixed with some romance then check out this book.

Thanks for a great read Kelli.

Entertaining and well written...BUT...

This story grabs your attention right from the beginning, but in some ways it fell flat for me. Just a warning there are some mild spoilers towards the end of the review.

Pros: I liked the characters for the most part. The heroine was a brave and feisty witch who has a kind compassionate heart. The hero is a troubled viking who rescues the heroine when she needs him the most. He is also quite charming and sweet. The author did a good job building up the chemistry between the two, but at one point I got tired of the constant interruptions. I was like "Come one! Just get to IT already!" ; ) The plot was good, not terribly original...but well carried out. There were plenty of villains to hate. And believe ME you will HATE them!

Mild SPOILERS ahead...

Cons: I had a problem with all the violence. I expected some violence of course and a little doesn't bother me. But I really didn't enjoy all the details of it. Rape, burning people, murder, torture of people and animals. At one point they talk about a poor cat burning alive and the noises it made. And thats just a taste of all the horrific things things that happened. I also thought it ended a little abruptly after all the build up. Would have liked an epilogue as well.

All in all not a bad story...if there wasn't all the detailed violence I would have given it five stars. If violence doesn't bother you I recommend reading this story.

Nevadí, no, možno to bude lepšie nabudúce :)

This has a great opening. It really hooked me. But basically once the two main characters meet the over all quality of this book plummets and I gave up based on the sheer ridiculousness of the dialog and thoughts/ motivations/actions of the characters.

3.75 Hearts This book is a bit different. At least in my opinion. The author contacted me to review the story which I was happy to do since it sounded out of the norm.

In this story Odaria is a witch who is ready to be burned at the stake. She is saved by a Viking who is looking for a Prince. Once she is in the nest of the Viking’s she is expected to use her powers to get Rothgar what he wants.

I liked that this was not a love at first sight kind of love. There is a lot of conflict between the two but the sexual chemistry is hot and can not be denied.

As I said this story was a bit different than I am used to. I am not one that reads the Pirate bodice ripper novels. But I found myself liking this story.

I received a complementary copy of this book for a book tour on my blog, for my to give my honest review. You can see more reviews and extras there too. Michelle's Paranormal Vault of Books

I was pleasantly surprised when I read this book, as I usually do not read any kind of historical books, I have maybe read under 10 in my whole life, so when I say I was happy with this, that’s a great compliment, as its outside my comfort zone, but we did have what I must have, and that’s a bit of paranormal, which our witch Odaria, who I really like has. I was not sure how I would feel about Rothgar, but her turned out to be a rather decent guy for a Viking. At least most the time, some things he had done, really surprised me, and I had not seen it coming.

This book was full of excitement, and twist and turns that I did not see coming. I was not bored one little bit at all. The sex scenes were done in a very decent way, not overly uncomfortable for me. I do not read erotica, so was happy that this was not, or if it was supposed to be, it was rather mild, just right. Not a YA book for sure, but I think anyone 18 and up will enjoy it.

This story as you can guess takes place in the Viking era and Rothgar is described to be to look like Chris Hemingsworth in Thor, so to me, that’s what popped into my head when reading. Not a bad visual at all.

We start the story with Odaria about to be burned alive for being a witch, by a evil man names Brennen, and the Vikings show up to hunt for a missing cousin of Rothgar’s at just the right time, and in that happening, she was able to get away, then a new danger emerges, as some of the brutes find her bound still hiding, and lucky her, Rothgar finds them about to abuse her in the worst way, and saves her, and claims her as his own. Of course he is a decent guy most of the time, and only said this to his men, to leave her alone.

I won’t get into too much from there, as there is much that goes on, and the twists that happen make the story very enjoyable, and would hate to ruin it for you. Let’s just say, the spitfire fights they have are full of passion, and really are written well. Kelli’s writing is flawless and beautiful, her world-building is amazing, and you can literally “see” this world as it was back in that era. I really liked how were got to be inside Rothgar’s head as well as Odaria, it was nice; really let me see what he was feeling as well as her.
Here is some exciting quotes for you. this one is what Rothgar is thinking of Odaria after he saved her from his men:

He glanced at Odaria. She was a strange girl, indeed. The moment he had touched her in the cookroom, an odd prickling sensation had spread through his body. It wasn’t the thrill of excitement or the powerful rush one experienced after a good fight. Instead, it felt as
if he’d been jabbed with thousands of sharp pins. His hands had grown warm and throbbed when he’d caressed her. Odaria’s skin blazed as if she were on fire from the inside. He’d never felt anything like that before. But until today, he’d never met a girl like Odaria.

Although she was pretty, her courage impressed him most. She hadn’t cowered before him, crying and begging for mercy. She’d kept her wits about her and dealt with him as a man would. That was uncommon in a woman, but Odaria was far from common.

Her wavy raven-black hair hung past her shoulders, contrast-ing sharply against her creamy white skin. Her large eyes were deep green flecked with bits of gold. From what he saw of her body through that scrap of linen she wore, she was young, succulent, and curvy in all the right places. Just being near her made him—

Here is another sweet moment, but sad with Rothgar and Odaria:
“I dug a—”
“I know.” She glanced at the muddy spade in his hand. “Thank you. You must think it foolish of me to cry, but Chester was my only friend. He was all I had after my mother—” Odaria burst into tears, and a sudden downpour soaked him to the skin.
He gazed up at the sky. Heavy gray clouds seemed to hover over the cottage. Was it possible that Odaria’s tears drew down the rain?
He knelt on the wet earth and wrapped his arms around Odaria. “I do not think you are foolish. You loved him, and now he’s gone. I know how much it hurts to lose someone you love.”

Overall I loved this book, and highly recommend it for adults and mature upper teens. 5 stars from me.

“Weaving in paranormal and thriller aspects and a zinger of an ending, Wilkins presents a violent, exciting, and steamy tale sure to please historical romance readers.”
~ Judy Murray, Library Journal (August 3, 2012)

“The world she describes is believable and so easy to visualize, and the characters are all there. There is a hero and heroine, the horrid bad guy and all the secondary people to fill out the story.”
~ Vickie A. Sold, Amazon review (August 21, 2012)

Eclectic writer Wilkins (e.g., A Midsummer Night’s Delights; Beauty & the Bigfoot) doesn’t disappoint with her latest historical romance title, set in ninth-century Scotland. Odaria is a Pict and self-proclaimed witch. Rothgar, a Norseman seeking his missing countryman, arrives just in time to interrupt the burning of Odaria as a witch. There is an instant attraction, and Rothgar becomes Odaria’s protector. Love blooms as violence and deceit swirl around them. Surrounded on all sides by enemies, our lovers must rely on each other, but can they trust each other? The inclusion of descriptions of daily life and such graphic details as the Vikings’ use of the Blood Eagle execution technique and the behavior of the Berserker Viking warriors adds interest.
Verdict Weaving in paranormal and thriller aspects and a zinger of an ending, Wilkins presents a violent, exciting, and steamy tale sure to please historical romance readers.—Judy Murray, Monroe Cty. Lib. Syst., MI

Vikings speaking German, Scots speaking in cockney dialects, do I need to say more? If I had to chose between reading this book again or getting burnt at stake like Odaria is supposed to be at the very beginning, I'd chose death.

Odaria is about to be burned at the stake by her enraged Pict village, incited to overlook all of the good magic she has done for them by the evil words of the village leader, Brennan. So naturally, she does what anyone endowed with supernatural powers would do when trapped in a near death situation: she calls down a curse upon the village. However, even Odaria is surprised when that curse takes the form of a ship of Viking raiders, led by the noble Rothgar. Rothgar is a powerful landowner and warrior, sent by his uncle the king to find his missing cousin and heir to the throne, Orvind.

Orvind’s ship is believed to have been wrecked on the shores of Odaria’s isle. The question is, is Orvind alive or dead? And where is he? Rothgar hopes to use Odaria’s magical powers to his advantage and have her help him find Orvind. However, things are much more complicated than that. Odaria is a spirited, stubborn, and voluptuous raven-haired beauty; Rothgar is a brash, bold Viking warrior who sees himself as a ruler of all—including his women. What follows is a rather predictable romance that somehow manages to fill nearly 300 pages.

Now, there are a lot of good things about The Viking’s Witch. The setting of Scotland during the dark ages creates a delightfully misty and mysterious atmosphere for the romance to unfold. The villain of the piece, Brennan, spits out insults so full of bile and horror that the reader will enjoy his capture by the Vikings and his inevitable torture as Rothgar attempts anything in order to find his beloved cousin. The character of Nordskag, a Viking berserker feared by everyone including Rothgar, is compelling and interesting. Wilkins’ writing is incredibly detailed and paints a nice portrait of a time period very far removed from our present day.

What the novel lacks is a lead couple for the reader to care about. Odaria herself, despite her magical abilities and sassy attitude, is a less than exciting heroine, and Rothgar, while impossibly attractive, is rather bland. Their romance contains a few smoking-hot love scenes that will keep the reader compelled to turn the page; however, when Odaria and Rothgar aren’t in bed together, they’re dull enough to make the reader want to skip to every sex scene in the novel instead. The various subplots that lead to them falling in love, then growing angry at each other, then realizing how they truly feel conquers all, are less than engaging.

The Viking’s Witch is a great book to pick up for a quick steamy beach read. Just don’t expect much more from it than that.

Loved this book, very sweet in the romance parts, and awesome in the battles and destruction, mostly, besides when the hero gets beaten up. Loved it!

*Full review from Words I Write Crazy on August 24th*
This was a really, really, really good book! Really enjoyed reading it, just sped right through it, even though I had planned on reading it the next day (which is making me really glad that I read it when I did, because yesterday was really, really, really busy and I might not have gotten a chance to read it) and yeah, the pages just kept going by, because the words on them compelled me to take them in and appreciate them!! And I did, because this was just the best!

The conflict in this book starts off right away with Odaria about to be burned alive for being a witch. After reading it, the leader guy, who is important to the book, should've been burned instead for being a male B with an itch, which, is honestly worse then a Witch because it's people being mean. And cruel. And in his case, a big fat liar and a semi-competent manipulator.

Odaria and Rothgar, they were, from an outsider's perspective, really funny together, they kept riling each other up, accidentally, of course, but that caused some really major arguments, which really spiced the novel up, with that fear, angry, and lust just piling into one big ball of emotions, and then being dropped in a pot till the heat set off explosions. Yep.

An enjoyable short story.

This was my first viking genre novel and by this author as well and I can honestly say I enjoyed it very much. Our leading man Rothgar was deliciously alpha male and gorgeous as a viking should be, big and muscular with long blond hair and blue eyes he was just drool worthy. He was a man with a painful past who you just couldn't help but feel sorry for even though he was confident, sweet and brave. From the moment he meets our leading lady Odaria he feels a physical attraction to her and desides to win her over by seducing her and what a seduction it was honey and berries has never sounded so good, and offering her his protection while the vikings are on the isle where she lives. Odaria is the local village witch who after being wrongly accused of a crime she didn't commit finds herself in need of Rothgars protection from both the villagers and the other vikings. She is young and naive having never left her village but what she lacks in experience she makes up for in courage and determination as she posses great power and knowledge of healing. There were times in which she would be extremely brave then turn quite childish and scared but what we have to remember is shes very young so makes sense that her resolve would crumble at times or would say or do some immature things. I found their story enjoyable and entertaining and their love story sweet and touching, they both had suffered so much and deserved to find their other half.

Odaria is a Pictish witch, the last in her family’s line of witches. Egged on by Brennan, the village leader, the village has come together to burn Odaria at the stake. Prior to the fire being lit, Odaria sets a curse on the village and it takes effect immediately in the form of Viking raiders. Rothgar, the Viking king’s nephew, is on a mission to find Orvind, his cousin. Rothgar rescues Odaria and they feel a profound connection between them, but the path to potential happiness is long and rocky. Rothgar uses Odaria’s magic and the fear of the villagers to try to ferret out the truth about what happened to Orvind and his men.

I absolutely loved the setting and the characters. I found myself swept away by Ms. Wilkins’ detailed descriptions into the past. Odaria is a sexy and saucy witch, yet very innocent in many ways while Rothgar is a hardened Viking with a heart. I loved the setting and some of the supporting characters as well, such as Nordskag and the other berserkrs. The sex scenes are very steamy and I loved the tension and drama in ‘The Viking’s Witch’. Ms. Wilkins has written a fun escapist romantic fantasy novel.

The characters were amazing. You can see two damaged souls, who didn't really trust each other at first, but learn to. They see, while on the isle, that they can only trust each other as there are so many backstabbers on the isle with them. They also find out the ones that you shouldn't trust end up being the ones to help them along the way. Their emotions seem real as you felt each emotion from the character. You can feel the connection between the two characters and know they were meant to be.

this deserves 3.5 stars. better than 3 but not quite 4!
the plot is laid out quite well in other reviews, so I'll not go there again, but this story throws you right in! the relationship between Odaria and Rothgar is dynamic, and quite witty at times. the plot moves along at a good pace and is highly believable for the time it is set.
it would be good if there is a follow up, about their times together having sailed home.
some sex, but not explicit, slightly amusing sometimes! violence is quite graphic though.

This book was recommended to me by a friend who told me the book was "one of the best books she has ever read"

Personally, this book did nothing for me what so ever. I did not like either of the protagonists Odaria and Rothgar. I feel like Wilkins tried to hard to make Odaria sassy and sarcastic and instead Odaria came across annoying. Rothgar was okay if a little of the cliché side of male Romance novel protagonists. The plot was okay and moved quick enough that the story did drag.

This is a wonderfully twisting historical romance story that depicts a time when life was hard and differences eradicated. The characters are well written with personal histories and studied personalities. The historic content has obviously been well researched and factual information interacts well with the story-line. I read this through one day as the book hooked me from the start. A well written piece of work that entices me to look for more by this author.

The paranormal elements just did not work in this kind of story and a lot of the time did not work for the heroine either--sometimes she saved herself with magic, sometimes was just a helpless heroine in distress--no rhyme or reason about when, why, or how she employed her magic, making many huge plot holes. If this story is your cup of tea than I am glad you read it, but it was not my cup or tea and I am sorry I wasted the time and aggravation.

I did like this book, but I really just wanted them to get it on. How many times can one couple get interrupted??? The build up was really sexy, though and it was worth the wait. I liked both the hero and the heroine, but was totally mad at the hero when he was going to betray the heroine. He always meant to rescue her, but she was beyond mad. I will look for more from this author, I really liked the story.

It's late, I know but the inconsistencies in this book are so many I wonder why I'm still reading it. A which ( odaria) is threatening a Viking and this being the beginning of 9th century mind you she gets away with it! Whaaa! I mean not even Buddha himself would be so composed as this Rothgar. I'm mad and km just reading that pages- lucky I'm reading of my phone otherwise this particular book would have made great fodder for the fireplace. Now that's Viking for you!

The Viking's Witch is a bit of fun, but unfortunately nothing more. The plot is sparse and the characters are bearable if shallow. I wont deny that it was a fun read, but disappointing to look back on. The main character has a range of about three emotions and no thought process beyond eat, sleep and make love.

This is set in 803 A.D., a period I don't know much about so I can't intelligently comment on the historical accuracy. It did seem appropriately brutal from what little I do know about that era. The brutality was balanced by the quieter, more personal moments. I didn't especially care for the big misunderstanding near the end, but that's sort of a requirement for a romance it seems.
