This weird fiction anthology includes "Crosseyed and Painless," one man's discovery of people growing in his basement; "Invaders of the Dreamspace!," a story of men who wake a god and live to regret it; and "Superstar," a revenge tale following a fallen angel and a whaling prophet. The titular story, "Flytrap," is about two workers on a date, and a sitcom that goes horribly wrong.
Stories anchored in this world but are they. Just finished but will read again as I am sure I missed something. A fantastical ride through the imagination of the author. My favorite is, it was hard to pick just one story, Here, In This Yankee Twilight. In this story two areas of interest for me, the American Civil War and Norse mythology come together in a way that makes you think, yes that could happen. Like I said, the stories are anchored in this world but are they.
Breaking my usual rule of not giving things ratings for no reason at all. Really cool to read after finishing Moby-Dick. The ending of the story "Here, in This Yankee Twilight" was arresting, and the local connections are fun. Hard to pick a favorite, but it might have to be "Invaders of the Dreamspace!" I'm a sucker for set up and payoff though, so "Superstar" obviously did it for me. Learned a surprising amount of new songs for a weird fiction anthology. Coolest book cover probably ever.
Liam writes some of the most unique weird fiction I've ever read. Flytrap is such an incredible read. Lynchian, Lovecraftian, but with a modern flair that is very accessible. The title story is harrowing, and the rest (especially "In This Yankee Twilight"), are so wonderfully strange and entertaining.
Stunning debut from new author Liam Fleming! The Great Unclench took my breath away, and Flytrap was another favorite. There’s truly something for everyone in this book.
