Killing My Father is one of the most unusual and compelling accounts in American crime history. The story is told by Mike Huff, the detective who investigated the crime, David Wheeler, the scientist who helped him solve it despite a massive FBI coverup, and crime historian Laurence J. Yadon. The victim, Roger Wheeler, President and CEO of Telex Corporation was murdered at one of America’s most exclusive country clubs after a golf game. Congress ultimately asked Detective Huff to help guide their investigation into four decades of FBI and Department of Justice corruption.
Of particular interest to me -- this murder happened in my hometown at Southern Hills Country Club and evolved into a lengthy and drawn-out world-wide search for the guilty party(ies). Book is written by the lead Tulsa detective assigned to the case and the son of the victim. Adds new information never released to the public before.
JUSTICE, it has been said, moves slowly but lands with an iron fist. Centered in the sights of "Killing My Father" is the Department of Justice itself, and that is your first clue that this is a bold and special book. The case presented in its pages is the result of literally decades of work by the son of murdered millionaire and a legendary homicide detective stymied by the so-called good guys. Is it personal? You bet. Does that detract from the strength of the case? Don’t bet on it. I read this book in three sittings. Given the sheer height, width, and breadth of the evidence, not to mention how complicated the case history is, this book is an achievement. It is presented as a story, not just as a case, and told as it is in David Wheeler's voice, the reader is ever mindful of the human element: a family traumatized and at odds, the alliance between two men under fire that became a forever friendship. Other books have tried to explain and understand the World Jai Alai murders -"Killing My Father" is the one you need.
Living in the Tulsa area, I remember this murder. Who thought anything like could happen at Southern Hills Country Club. Sgt Huff and David Wheeler showed such tenacity over the years trying to find the answer. No one would believe how many corrupt people were involved.
A lot of details about the investigation of the murder of Whitey Bulger’s most famous victim. Written by the victim’s son it also details the devastation the murder caused in the victim’s family. Unfortunately it is very poorly written and even more poorly edited but worth a read.
A long read but worth the effort. I was shocked at the level of corruption within the FBI and wonder if it’s still continues today. When it comes to homicide detectives, Mike Huff is definitely a superstar.
