“Now be a good girl and hold still while I eat you.”

After a humiliating demotion, scientist May is sent on a solo mission to the harsh and unforgiving Sandpit Desert – only to be captured by the continent’s most wanted eco-terrorist group: Gaia 4.

With her life on the line, May strikes a risky deal with the leader of the group – a towering, hot-headed Lizardfolk named Lowell. Despite his reputation for eating humans, Lowell’s interest in May seems to extend beyond the means of simple hunger.

As the two journey together to right a wrong from May’s troubled past, danger lurks at every step… but so do the unexpected flames of desire.

Trapped between survival and seduction, May must face a terrifying truth: she and the monster she once feared may not be so different after all.

...

Why did they put all the character information at the end? 🙄 I only found out when I finished the book that May was 8 years older than Lowell🤌🏻

The plot is good. Lowell's attitude bothered me a little, but I also understood his anger. May was a bit dumb for a scientist, but 'cause it's a short book, I didn't care that much.

Captured by the Scaled Outlaw was a wild ride. May is just trying to survive the desert when she gets snatched up by Lowell, a seven-foot lizard man. Like, yes he’s terrifying, yes he eats people, but also…I was constantly asking myself, “why am I attracted to this?” If you like monster romance this one delivers.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5, with bonus points for making me scared and kicking my feet at the same time.

ARC Read
Trigger Warnings (not all - just the ones that stood out to me personally): on-page violent deaths, light vore, spit, non-human MMC.

I reached out to author Nathalia Rui to ask if I could be an ARC reader for their debut novel.
Boy, am I glad I did.

To preface, I'm very much a ✨vibes✨reader. If a book doesn't hook me in the first few pages, I'm very forgiving. I'll give it a few weeks and try again. Captured by the Scaled Outlaw had me in its clutches from the get-go.

(Picture me hunched over my kindle at 4am: I thought I was, at best, halfway through - only to realise there were just 50 pages left and the sun was about to come up. Which, of course, sent me into a spiral since Rui has no other novels out yet).

Needless to say, I absolutely devoured this book.

[✔️] Older FMC? Check. (I'm 32 and simply *cannot* read about 21yos anymore).
[✔️] Fantastic pacing? Check.
[✔️] Eco-warfare subplot under the overarching monster romance? Check.
[✔️] Morally grey characters all around? Check.
[✔️] Yandere (IYKYK) vibes? Check.

May, the FMC, is refreshingly human and very flawed. Lowell, the MMC, is equal parts terrifying and down-bad. There are also two secondary characters that I am on my knees begging to read more about.

Rui's writing and world-building kept me completely immersed throughout my read. (In fact, the strong immersion made it so I could push through a little discomfort re: some kinks that aren’t really my cup of tea). While some of the linguistic choices felt a bit stilted (a common mark of a debut, self-pub novel that I’ve come to notice), the storytelling more than made up for it.

If you love monster romance with a sharp edge, this is one to grab. I’m excited to see where Rui goes next!

Okay so I want to start this off by saying I really enjoyed the story! As an avid monster romance reader, I feel like it hit all the marks. It was engaging and the chemistry between characters was very obviously there. I love an unhinged MMC and I think Lowell was written beautifully.
Now, I’m only giving this 4 stars. I hardly leave reviews and just move on to the next. But I really feel like this author can only get better from here!
I’m unsure if this book is the authors first book or not. It kind of felt like it, especially with the “additional information” about the characters at the end. Those details could have easily been dropped within the story. It felt like an “oh yeah, throw that in there” when it would’ve given more depth to the characters throughout the story.
There were a few continuity errors as well, like when the FMC crossed her arms but then suddenly dropped her hands from her face? This happened a few times, and I don’t mind overlooking it, but it is easily fixable!
Lastly, and this may come from a personal perspective, but the FMC’s utter devotion to her government position felt forced. I understand the initial denial, I understand the internal struggle with wanting to return to complacency for story’s sake, but it just felt a bit off. The page long internal debate on what she didn’t know what to do after learning everything just felt frustrating. No government position is worth all that (ha!).
All that said, I really enjoyed the read and look forward to reading other books from this author.

I have NO idea how this doesn't have more reviews?? How are people sleeping on this! This was such a fun romp AND it had a lovely plot! Which is definitely a rarity (imo) in the genre. This is filled with all the tropes you could dream of:

Extra Spicy 🥵🔥
Monster x Human
Touch Her and Die ☠️
Enemies to Lovers (my favorite 😍)
Possessive ML
Size difference (in more way than one 👀)
Going against a corrupt company 🔥

I'm beyond thankful this showed up on my Instagram reel feed 💪

That aside, the overarching plot was LOVELY and I adored both Lowell and May. They both made mistakes - but grew together and learned from them. The action scenes? Immaculate. The extra spicy scenes? Hot 🥵

I can't wait to see what Rui puts out next!! ❤️

This Book is one of the most unique Books I have ever read! Amazingly Complex Characters, the MC’s Banter and conversations felt natural and funny. The FMC was strong but not in the Girl Boss way, the MMC though terrifying due to his size and eating people, was a surprisingly nice guy 🤗 The writing was extremely well done and the Author has a clear grasp of all her characters. The revelations made throughout the book were shocking and the true nature of both the MC’s left me speechless due to it being very unexpected 🤭
Even the Spicy scenes were unique and unlike anything I have ever read before, very creative 👏
Can’t wait for Book 2 🥳
Traditional Rating 5/5 but for me personally 10 Stars! 🌟🤩

The characters in this book are immaculate! Complex and REAL. The gore is somehow fun? And the romance is so satisfying!!!!

- Forced proximity

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Love me a good psychotic giant lizard!

This book was a good mix of excitement and spice. May is strong, clever, and brave. I loved seeing her character arc throughout the story and appreciated that she doesn’t succumb to Lowell’s shenanigans. Really happy that she’s an older character and enjoyed the dynamic between the two characters with Lowell being younger and insufferable.

Surprisingly, I thought it would be a lot more gory, but I felt it was just the right amount. Smut is *chef’s kiss*, and honestly the over the top and grittiness of it is what I always expect out of a monster romance story. I don’t like when monster characters are too domesticated and palatable for humans, and I’m pleased that Lowell doesn’t fit that mold. He’s intense, kinda deranged, and never dulls himself to make others comfortable around him. He’s also big and hunky so that helps heh 😍.

I only really wished for the big bad guy to be even more evil somehow. I’m not sure if I just imagined him a certain type of way in my head, but I felt like I’d be able to pummel him even as a disabled person lol. He was literally mustache twirling evil, which I think is really funny if I don’t think of the heinous things he’s done.

I very much enjoyed this book and wanted it to be longer. I care about these characters!! They’re precious and I need more!! I hope there’s a book 2 😭💕

This was a super fun, spicy and fast paced read! I love the idea of an eco-terrorist organization and an unhinged but somehow lovable MMC.

May discovering her inner bloodlust was also a fun deviation from the norm. An entertaining and engaging read for sure.

I never thought that I would be the type of reader that would consider a monster romance featuring all types of kinks like vore and straight up fighting, as a palate cleanser read. Alas! Here I am, swooning over a giant Lizardfolk ecoterrorist who eats humans with glee.

This was such a good read. I enjoyed it from start to finish. I loved the hateful dynamics between Lowell and May. The enemies to lovers trope is finally correctly assigned. On multiple occasions they were trying to kill each other or at the very least harm each other. It worked. The relationship building was a little light to be honest, but it still felt pretty real.

I loved how well the characters themselves were written. May being so stuck on abiding the law fit so well, especially when she was shown multiple times that the government she worked for were not the good guys. She was infuriating in her rigidity. But she worked so well with Lowell and his chaotic nature. Of course he wasn't a complete idiot but he did just eat first and ask questions later a lot of the time.

The pacing was great. The characters were well done. I'm desperate for more of the characters of Gaia 4. I need a Guy x Ginny story, like, yesterday.

I mean… if your monster MMC doesn’t eat some people along the way, what are we even doing?

With the setting being a bit of an unknown, I felt like I was just along for the ride (in the best way). The way May knows/navigates the setting feels very real and grounded. I personally don’t mind a bit of info dumping here or there, but this had excellent pacing. Finished in two sittings.

Loved the characters. May was relatable and interesting. I love me some “you wanna push me around? Well, I left all that shit back in my early 20s lol so GOOD. LUCK.” And the whole “unexpectedly turned on by something questionable/dangerous” is always a delight. Also, I’d say this was a true enemies to lovers so if you’re into that (like I am) it should scratch that itch.

In conclusion, the romance was great and the spice was just right. I’ll definitely read whatever else the author puts out.

This book shows real promise as a debut novel and I can’t wait to see where the author goes from here! For the monster romance subgenre I found it surprisingly plot-heavy in a way that never pulled away from the romance. Lots of interesting lore and worldbuilding. It wasn’t without its flaws: I felt like some things were over explained (villain monologuing that explains every step of the plan felt exposition dump-ey) and other elements were under explained (I wish I understood WHY May was so devoted to the government and her former job). But overall well written and very engaging!

I don't typically read romance novels, but after getting this promoted to me a few times through social media, I was intrigued. I'm glad I ended up giving it a shot because it was a super fun read! The characters were all very likeable and I found myself genuinely very interested in the world and the plot. I can't wait to read more from Nathalia Rui!

(More of a 3.5/5, but Goodreads doesn't do half ratings.)

I was surprised to learn this was the authors first book. I enjoyed the story and the plot was great. Having a strong female protagonist was refreshing.

There were a few things I found odd. The way many characters whispered randomly or how she would suddenly become "giddy". I have to say, the main spice scene also could use a little work... but still loved!

The book overall was a fun read and I was hoping for a second one. I Will definitely be reading the newest book/story that is being released soon.

I thought the character design was super cool, that’s what initially got me to read the book.
I really liked Lowell. His character made sense, especially once you learn more about him. The violence, the aggressive way he tried to protect the environment. I would have loved to learn more about him and be in his head.

May on the other hand was borderline annoying. I do like how she acknowledged she had no reason to like Lowell or be turned on by him literally about to eat her, that was funny. But she continued to cling to these “morals” that she held herself so highly to. She was haughty, which I don’t think is a bad thing in a character, it’s simply the inconsistencies with her that made it irksome. I understand being against an eco terrorist, but then she’d turn around and get a thrill from killing people, but jump back to ‘oh we should do things by the book’ and judge (but also be turned on?) when Lowell did it. Girl I get being confused, but if you’re going to pick a hill to die on, at least pick one you aren’t so wishy washy about.

Also, the whole kicking his grave wound to get him riled up? A wound that they’re thinking will kill him and literally makes him prone at the end there. There were several things that similarity just didn’t make sense. There were lot of mishaps in the writing and it definitely could have used a read over to hash those out.

I really think the bones of the story are good, and very interesting. With time it could be something really good.

😈 Monster factor: 5/5
🌶️ Spice: 3/5
🌟 Overall: 4/5

I went into this expecting monster smut and ended up getting a surprisingly fun little desert adventure with a grumpy scaled outlaw, a stubborn FMC, and a hostage situation that was somehow both intense and entertaining.

This book doesn't take itself too seriously. Which honestly? That worked for me. It has the “she’s his captive” setup/trope, the territorial monster energy, the age gap taboo, and enough strange anatomy moments to make you question what you just read, and then continue with more curiosity.

The FMC (May) was a strong point for me. I liked that she had a backbone, a history enough fire in her to make the back and forth banter between them feel alive instead of one sided and on the monster spice factor to carry it. The MMC (Lowell) is dangerous, grumpy, protective, and very much not human, which is... exactly the point. I loved that you knew the situation is absurd, but you’re still fully invested and can't wait for more.

I wouldn’t call this super dark. It has darker themes because of the captive setup, but the overall tone felt more adventurous, spicy, and oddly funny than trauma or dark shock factors. The humor actually surprised me, and I loved it!

As far as spice goes, I’d say the monster smut concept delivers, though the actual heat level was a little lighter than I expected. Still, the scenes were unique enough to make the book memorable. I think that means I'm a bit of a freak at this point, so take that with a grain of salt?

Overall, this was fun, weird, entertaining, and exactly the kind of monster romance you read when human men start sounding boring.

Read if you like:
- grumpy monster MMCs
- stubborn FMCs
- hostage romance
- age gap
- territorial protectiveness
- desert adventure
- creative anatomy

This was Nathalia Rui's first book, and she did a great job. The themes, characters, and story are well developed. I enjoyed the journey of getting to know the characters and their backgrounds. The enemies-to-lovers dynamic between the MMC and FMC was beautiful, though their personalities lean more toward the playful yet harsh side. They tease each other constantly and don’t pull their punches, but they always move on from it.

I prefer my MMC to fall and turn soft, but there’s nothing soft about Lowell, lol. And May gives him a run for his money… like full speed over a cliff. Please pay attention to the trigger warnings; the author doesn’t shy away from the roughness that comes with loving a monster.

If you enjoy monster romance and supporting indie authors, this is the book for you.

THIS BITCH WAS WAY TOO HORNY!!!

I really like the idea of a pencil-pusher turning into an eco-terrorist with a buff lizard baddie but GIIIIIIIIRL almost every page the MC was rolling her eyes or getting turned on or being a hypocrite. Her moral compass made absolutely no sense, and she acted more like a 20yr old than a wholeass grown woman.

I wish we got more backstory from Lowell and his teammates. They were far more interesting and should've had more time to develop. The additional info could've been added into the ACTUAL STORY.

(Also her kicking his fresh wound to get him to bite her mid-sex was lowkey coercion dawg 😭)

Honestly I would've rated this higher if it wasn't for May... she was absolutely insufferable with her ignorance and blind loyalty to a city/country that she openly admitted made questionable decisions. I understand that her Grandma raised her to obey the law and encouraged she do the good thing from inside the government, but the absolute naivety and refusal to believe that a place that ostracized and threatened her own grandmother her entire life was not a corrupt place is insane. The constant monologue of May saying she wanted to go back to Nilsan even after being shown that they were corrupt, and her superiority cimplex over Gaia 4 made me want to thoroughly wring her neck.

3/3.5

Overall, it was not a bad read. The story was low-stakes and focused on the relationship between Lowell and May.
I liked Lowell, borderline morals and all, that was fun. He eats people and I'm okay with that.
May was a bit too naive for such a bright scientist... The spicy is spicing, that's for sure.

Pick it up for:
- Monster x Human
- Desert planet
- Protecting the land/species (ecological vibes)
- One tent in a sandstorm (that was a fun part)

Okay trying to remember the plot here because I read this months ago and never got around to writing a review.

FMC is a scientist who is trying to do the ethical thing. She comes from a family of like demon hunters or something? So she’s good with a weapon. She’s taken by an “eco terrorist” group, but they treat her super well. She ends up helping them because they show her all the evil the lab has done. She becomes one of them and fights the man.

Such a fun book! Obviously, it's leaning more to the monster lovers, but an all around blast. It gets spicy quick and not just for cheap thrills. May and Lowell were perfect.

The spice was unique to monster books! What a lizard folk can do with two tongues!!

The plot kept my attention, the characters had great chemistry. The descriptions were not overbearing. I loved every bit of this book.
