⤅ I've read a lot of spineless, masochistic heroines, but this one has to take the fricking cake.
The book opens with the heroine GETTING ON HER KNEES TO LICK THE SHOES of some evil queen bee. Um, what the hell? Without a gun to her head, she sinks down and is fully ready to do some literal bootlicking, all the while whining 'I'm sorry for bumping into you, it was an accident! Please don't do anything to me!' She's only saved because the hero storms in and stops it.
If you thought he was a knight in shining armour, think again. He's her ex-best friend who was her first kiss then randomly stopped talking to her and has ignored her for years. When she tries to thank him for stepping in, he tells her to piss off... and somehow, that makes her run to the toilet and start sobbing. Because of a couple of mean words from someone she claims to hate. Good God. In fact, in the first 10% of the book, the heroine spends most of her time crying or hiding away from other people in the toilet.
I'm sorry, I just cannot deal with a heroine as spineless as this. I don't need my heroines to be made of steel, but I expect a basic level of self-respect and dignity. That involves NOT GETTING ON YOUR KNEES TO LICK SOMEONE'S SHOES, moreover someone who doesn't even seem to have hurt or otherwise coerced you into doing it?? The girl literally just gives the heroine a glare and our heroine is tripping all over herself to do whatever she wants. The phrase 'willing victim' comes to mind. I'm out of here.
I didn’t finish. And honestly I’m mad. I’m super into RH and I’ll take a good bully RH any day when there is a justifiable reason why there is some reason to it. At this time I am 36% in and so far all I’ve gotten is the immature back and forth banter between high school kids. I should’ve known better.
Possible Spoiler:
I can handle dark bully RH but I can’t abide by coercing a minor into doing sexual favors because the guys stopped a rape from “getting to far” when the lead was obviously drugged and intoxicated and then prior to them stopping it they filmed part of it. That’s just not cool. It’s garbage. They blackmail her into agreeing to be whatever they want her to be. And then on top of it the female lead the next day goes to the guy who assaulted her and says :
Direct quote:
“ It shouldn’t have happened. I didn’t want it. You drugged me.I’m sure it’s a mistake. You’re a nice guy”
What in the ever loving f**k? I can’t. Then he goes on to try to blackmail her into them continuing where they left off or he’ll tell her best friend who really likes him.
There’s a fine line. This book just wasn’t for me and I could’ve left off there, but what really pisses me off is that there’s no real trigger warning it just says “this is a reverse harem bully romance” I’m sorry but there’s a difference between bullying and rape, and videotaping a minor getting assaulted. The guys who are potentially going to be her harem allow parts of the assault to happen so they can use it for leverage. How are people finding this sexy??????? How is this rating high???? How is normalizing rape culture sexy??? This was an absolute dumpster fire book that blows my mind that there are a total of four books.
I finished this only because of the same masochism that drove me to finish 1 1/2 of the Fifty Shades books--because I wanted to burn it down and salt the earth, but I needed to be fully informed in order to do so.
It's a reverse harem bully novel--this is not why I loathed it. When you know that going in, you can expect a certain kind of tension. I don't have a problem with the genre, and I've read RH/B books before and liked them.
I just hate THIS book.
It's labeled a romance, but unless coercion and sexual assault are your idea of "romance," it's really just a book with some fucking in it. To sell a bully storyline, there needs to be some kind of backstory there, a tension that undergirds the whole thing. Here, the justification for the bullying is as flimsy as the wall in a Forever 21 dressing room. The four boys--only mildly characterized beyond "the four popular boy archetypes"--are horrible humans. The coerce the MC into being the tootsie roll center of their toxically masculine tootsie pop by The only consequences for the dude who did it are that he gets an ass kicking, but more because she is "THEIRS" now and he needs to step off.
NEVER does she consider going to authorities or reporting it. And I get why someone may choose not to--but AT LEAST CONSIDER IT.
And for fuck's sake. The main character. She is cardboard thin in terms of characterization, and she's supposedly smart enough to get a full ride to an ivy league college yet she is just dumber than a box of hair. It's infuriating to see her get manipulated, abused, recorded unwillingly, tormented, and then also have Roofie Dude constantly in the background threatening her with finishing what he started, which she LETS HAPPEN.
But you know, the guys are so hot, and they can make her come, so in the face of that, why would bodily autonomy or agency or even BASIC PERSONAL SAFETY matter, right? They're hot!
[Side note: Her name is Rosalie, which the boys shorten to "rosebud" over and over, and it's probably my fault for having read so much slashfic, but when I hear that word and there are no flowers around all I am thinking about is AN ANUS.]
Of course there is the blonde cheer captain who is evil and also bullies her, because of course other women are horrible. The only other woman in the book is her friend Jamie--no last name, no character, just a straight-out-of-central-casting sidekick--and Jamie is a fickle friend who turns on the MC and slut shames her at the first chance.
Stick a fucking fork in me.
All I can say is that at least since it was part of Kindle Unlimited, I didn't pay for the misery of reading this. At least not in a monetary sense.
This MC doesn't need four boyfriends, she needs a lot of therapy and some semblance of self worth.
This book was so good! I love all the characters, and its nice to see a female lead who's NOT a badass in a violent way, but one who keeps pushing through hell. Shes a fighter in the mental sense, and I love that. The guys are all very different from each other, and I love some are softer than others. My heart hurt for fox, and watching this story unfold was painful but beautiful.
Whether I liked the story or not aside, this book was well written. I like the writer's sentences, pace, and ability to drag you into the story. As for the story, honestly I let too much time pass between reading and writing the review, and I read all the other books in the series so they kind of blended together. All I'm left with is the overall feeling. Rosalie seriously got on my nerves in the first book, that much I do remember.
2nd DNF on this one - didn’t realize I’d tried this one before until I opened it at 38% 😬 …. Decided to skim to the end. These high school kids, who are doggedly pursuing an RH relationship with the h, act like middle schoolers. I am not feeling true affection/chemistry. They just seem like hormonal teenagers who want to get their rocks off with a gangbang. Not for me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I was looking forward to reading this new to me author, unfortunately that feeling didn’t last. This was on the cusp of being a DNF by the end of the first chapter, and I kinda wish I would have listened to that instinct.
The prologue gave a little insight into Rosie and Fox’s past friendship, and from there these characters took a nosedive.
My all-time favorite trope is bully romance, but there’s a finesse that authors need to make these types of stories work, and In Ruins didn’t have any of it. In the first chapter she’s made to get on her knees and lick the food off the “Queen Bee’s” shoes. Why? Because she bumped into her and food spilled on her shoes from it.
Does Rosie put up any sort of fight? Of course not.
Rosie was weak, she posed no challenge at all to these guys, she bent to the will of anyone that got in her face. In my opinion that’s not the type of heroine meant for a bully romance. I think she’s taken the place of the top doormat character in a romance.
Normally my favorite thing is the push/pull between the heroine and the bully because she’s sassy, and strong, and never willing to just bend at the will of others.
This book was all the same, someone bullying Rosie and her bending at their will, and in the times she did try to pretend she had a backbone it came off as ingenuine and ridiculous. How was I supposed to believe that every now and again this character that continuously proves she has no backbone, all of a sudden had one for the length of a sentence and then for it to vanish again as if it never existed.
I didn’t feel a connection between her and any of the guys, and Fox’s reason for hating her wasn’t even really explained, other than he blamed her for his mom’s death which made zero sense.
Some of the guys were kind of sweet, and even a little charming, but to be honest I don’t remember their names, nor do I care. Several of the guys were supposed to have the “alpha-hole” vibe, but alas that wasn’t what I got from them.
Rosie didn’t even have a best friend to offer anything to the story. She was awful.
With friends like that, who needs enemies? Well, except Rosie because it seems like everyone in her life is her enemy in one way or another.
There was no character development, by the end of the book the guys have lessened their chance of having any redeeming qualities, and Rosie is a spineless mess that all of a sudden makes a threat which was laughable at that point.
I will not be reading any more by this author, no chemistry, no likeable qualities in any of the characters, weakness in moments that should have shown a character's strength, no witty banter, and lackluster steam.
This is a story about 4 football hotshots, better known as the 4 horseman and the girl who they want to break... or do they. They rule the school and get what they want, when they want it. No isn't usually a word they hear.
Fox, Ethan, Cole and Enzo - Fox has known Rosalie since they were very young and they have lots of history. They are neighbors, neighbors that loathe each other. Something happens and he goes from loving her and him being her whole world... to him hating her and wanting to make her life as miserable as possible. They all just seem to watch her be tormented from afar and watch while other students try to bring her to her knees.
Fox's girl Juliet tries one day in the cafeteria at school. Juliet demands that Rosalie lick the food that supposedly got on her schools when Rosalie accidentally bumped into her. She refuses to which angers Juliet. Which then makes Fox step in. Hmmmm....
Now Rosalie is in Fox's sights one again. All the boys want her and try so hard to get her to be putty in their hands. Fox wants her, but doesn't want to give in. Kinda like a - if I can't have her no one will scenario. Something happens at a party and the guys blackmail her into being theirs. It takes a bit of convincing, but she finally surrenders to them. To do what they what, when they tell her to do. It's a just say yes and don't ask any questions thing.
Things start to heat up..... and then secrets are found out and hearts are broken. Can they come back from this ---
Oh gosh, that cliffhanger!! Need to read book two asap!
I cannot BELIEVE I made it to 40%. It angers me to no end and the FMC falls for such d*ckheads that are basically assaulting her!! Her supponed bff just hates her for no reason whatsoever. I would "get" it if there was a misunderstanding of some kind in the past that was never cleared up. I'm guessing is going to be something that has to do with the death of his mother. He probably blames her or something. But with zero explanation I am SOOO pissed off that he just mistreats her so bad. "I never want you to hurt" what a whole looaaaad of BS!!!
I hate how weak rosie is. Too effin much. I want her to stand up for herself!! Ughhhh to kneel for julia??? Just no. Just thar great start of a scene (note the sarcasm) told be exactly everything I needed to know of rosie.
I hate the guys. They are literally the type of guys the heroes I like always defend the girl of. And nothing makes them change their minds. Honestly, the only difference I see between them and Ian is that they are 4. Dont give me this bs that because they wouldnt drug her they are good guys. They went to her home. Dragged her to a party she did not want to go (of course her lack of will and self respect added to that but that is another point), they let her get dragged to bed with a guy they knew was bad news and recorded her to blackmail her into being their sex slave. Yeah they are soooo much better than Ian. PFFFF!!!!
They see her suffer in so many ways and still bully her and hurt her. How is she supposed to feel love for them? Ever? The fact that she gets turned on makes me want to throw my phone against the wall. Or against her head. Ughhh. Blackmail her into being their whore???? Seriouslyy!!!??? The moment she accepted the deal I stopped reading.
I know that for some it is a turnon when the guys are so bossy and dominating. I get and respect that. Even like it myself. I don't mind it being a game in the bedroom. Rollplay. Cool. But in their daily lives?? That is a big fat NO. Fuck that.
This is my first read by K.G. Reuss and my mind is completely blown. This had been chilling in my kindle for awhile and I am kicking myself for not picking up sooner - it pulled me right in and I can’t stop reading the series.
I haven’t read a Bully high school romance this good in a long time. K.G Reuss is a great storyteller.
The story centers around Rosalie “Rosie” and her tormentors: Juliet, Fox, Cole, Enzo and Ethan. These people make her life a living hell on earth. The first page you’re introduced to Juliet asking Rosie to lick her shoes or else, face the consequences. Fox comes to her rescue but no good deed goes unpunished.
It is nonstop pulling at your heartstrings from there on out. K.G. did a phenomenal job (in my opinion) at painting the picture of this dark and ominous plot with characters that had me intrigued and wanting to know more. As soon as I post this I am already starting Book 3. I went into Book 2 and finished it in less than 24 hours.
This story is told from Rosie’s POV so we don’t get the guy’s perspectives. I hope we get to see that in future books though. I love the Multiple POV books especially in Bully romance.
The four horsemen, all stars of the football team, and one nearly broken heroine brought to her knees by the school's queen bee. Can they save her from a life of torment?
The simple answer: no. Things are only going to going to get worse from here on in, and it will be an epic ride to see if these four men can save their woman.
I must say, four men on one woman got me quite hot under the collar. Although it starts as a slow burn, it certainly hots up near the end.
This book left me in tatters its emotional, sad, and so wrong its good with bullies to arrogant and to sexy you don't know weather to smack them or hate to love them there devious and obviously broken and get there kicks from others suffering and there latest victim from there little black notebook is the most broken of them all but by the end she will be stronger and ready to take them all on Fox the childhood friend and first love, Cole the cruel charming monster, Enzo the Italian God among boys at Black Falls Highschool and Ethan the shy one who doesn't stand out as a bully but there's a monster hidden there im sure and then there's Ian may he wrote for what he did and Juliet she's know tragic heroin she's Malifacent in disguise and the friend that betrayes Jamie she listens to a cruel manipulative boy whose using her. This book twist and turns to the bitter end when all there lies are out there schems exposed and now all those warnings that Rosalie was getting now she knows it all somebody is going to pay.
Rosalie just needs to get threw her last year of high-school and stay away from her bulies but they won't stay away from her and her former friend Fox's girlfriend is at the top of the pack and she won't back down till someone muzzles her bad doggie bad. If Rosalie can just graduate and do what her parents expect keep the grades up and don't make waves unfortunately she has to go to a party and her downward spiral begins the Horseman have just found there perfect girl there like Hyennas trying to keep others away from there food there wiling to blackmail to get it. But Cole, Fox, Enzo and Ethan are not her only problem Ian someone she considered a friend has to break her as well he wants her all to himself or he will ruin her. Will Rosalie let the pretty cruel boys win.
I hate cliffhangers and now I'm hooked and can't wait for the second book to come out.
I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book via booksprout and this is my honest review.
My first book with this author, and it won't be the last. I absolutely adored this book. It was a real bully romance, with bullying, mean girls and mean guys, the confidante best friend, and a twist. From friends to enemies, Rosie and Fox along with his boys decide to take an interest in this heroine who previously was persona non-grata. The question is why and should she trust them.
Excellent character and story development in this reverse harem tale, strong chemistry among the characters, good or bad, sexual or non-sexual. This story was well-written, a great balance of dialogue, prose, flow, and pace such that the scenes unfold in your mind and you experienced Rosie's feelings. Usually I like a story told from multiple points of view, but in this case, one POV worked well as written, and in fact added to the intrigue. Additionally, while the heroine seemed timid, she was not a pushover. She tried to defend herself, but I suspect her true voice and defenses are about to evolve in the next books.
Truly one of the best reverse harems I've read, story mixed with the right amount of steaminess and intrigue. I was so captured by the writing that I reached the end, and I didn't realize time has passed. Such a great book. Looking forward to the next in the series.
This was a tough one. I HATED IT and gave up, but then picked it up again because of Rosalie's fire, backbone, and fight - I wanted to see how she fared - and finally went to the end. I can see/anticipate where this is going, I get who set up whom, and who the enemies are, and probably the true nature of the group of men. It turned tragic rather than hateful, but still, because of that scene, what they did to her, forcing her to her knees, the threats, blackmail, the hatefulness and purposeful misery telling her what they planned to do, winding her up to dread. . . I stick with the rest of assessment, that kind of coercion is a crime, and just because fiction can turn it around doesn't mean the act is a forgivable one or should be. I have a hard time seeing how the men should be ALLOWED to come back from that coupled with the "lost" item. . . Good writing though, really is able to draw you in, make you hate, care, mourn. I just wished it didn't appear to say women should be okay with this kind of treatment -- because if they eventually get an HEA, you know all will be forgiven and forgotten. Man if it happens too easily, it will really cement my case, (but the acid test is) I really don't want it to. So I leave it up to all of you, there are some issues here, but there is the appearance at a true hard-working redemption, and I do want to read the next one and see what she does and how long she holds their feet to the fire.
So the original assessment of the consent, respect, and bodily autonomy issues with this story: Another book glorifying coerced sex, technically rape, with a sad effort made to make the group of sexual predators look less like rapists because they saved the female lead from getting date-raped after being drugged at a party that they literally forced her to go to. She resisted doing as they demanded at the party ("I don't want YOU but I do want sex" -- gosh why are you offended by that, just be happy we chose you, don't drink more than one, don't talk to that guy, don't trust your friend because we said so and we're so charming, don't leave until we say you can, do what we tell you to, when we tell you to), so yup, yup, yup, she told the ass-hat to get lost, they got mad she wasn't just panting for them and so they insulted, demeaned and tormented her until she drifted off to get away from their controlling, demeaning behavior, and then got preyed upon by a different rapist.
Gosh, why wouldn't we all get turned on by the way they treated her and then blackmailed her into what is basically a gang-rape situation? Lovely right? Yeah, I thought so too, got to 37% and was so angry that ANYONE would pass this off as a romance book that I would not finish the book and am not entertained by portrayals of abuse=foreplay on the path to "love," i.e. "gosh if the boy hits you he must like you," crap that goes along with "boys will be boys."
To be fair, this heroine Rosaline, does have a lot of fight in her, but she is shy, awkward, and insecure, with just enough gullibility and stupidity (primarily because the lead in this little gang of rapists used to be her best friend and she allowed that weaken her resolve and not listen to her gut) that she gets backed into a corner and taken advantage of (hence "Ruined"), and gang sexually assaulted by the "heroes." So really it is the men in this story that make it disgusting, and anyone who says there is something redeemable, sexy, romantic, or worthy about these four anal amoeba has IMHO not thrown off the misogynistic societal programming that benefits sexual predators.
What bothers me about this, you may ask? Well, I'm really sick and tired of portrayals of the "heroes" or even "anti-heroes" doing things that are UNFORGIVABLE, and are basically SERIOUS SEXUAL CRIMES, only to end up being forgiven and getting the girl in the end because their trespasses have been cast as something that they could come back from, and generally because the VICTIM made the concessions and sacrifices necessary to redeem the situation. Basically making it seem like women SHOULD love men who abuse and sexually coerce them, that they should enjoy it as "domination" because the men know better than they do. There are actions - crimes- that we should NEVER forgive so easily, lest we allow scum to re-victimize us, and others, again and again. Portrayals of this drivel as "romance" only sends a message that undermines all women have worked for to gain respect for our bodily autonomy, and right to consent.
Instead of perpetuating the misogynistic tropes in which men ignore, "no, means no;" and come to understand that there is NO such thing as, "the mouth said no, but the body said 'yes,'" because what a woman SAYS is ALL THAT MATTERS WHEN IT COMES TO CONSENT, not a male's wishful thinking; that substance impaired individuals are INCAPABLE of giving rational, informed consent; and that it is NOT okay to ignore a woman's refusal of consent because you have more sexual experience and therefore feel like you know better, I'd like to see the story where the struggle isn't about consent or sexual coercion needing to be forgiven, at least on the part of our male lead -- villains, yes, our HEA leads, NO.
However, THIS BOOK DOES ALL OF THE ABOVE. It contributes and perpetuates and glorifies, all of those misogynistic tropes, cliches, and excuses that victims of sexual abuse and sexual assault have fought against for years, and makes them out to be "okay" and the men can just overcome the wrongness of their actions and should be forgiven just because they have a pretty face, or decide for two minutes to act like a real human being. Huh, NO, I don't think so.
So yeah, it’s a bad book with no redeeming aspects. Everything about Rosalie annoyed me, including her painfully First World Problem of ‘I earned a full ride to an Ivy League college but I would rather siiiing’, never mind everything related to her guys. Needless to say, I will not be continuing this series nor trying anything else by this author, because even beyond the bully aspect, the book was nonsensical tripe of the cheapest kind.
Sarah Puckett did a good job narrating, though! So, there’s that.
Heroine is too pathetic to even be half decent friend.
Rosaline rationale: Im going to allow my friend to crush on/spend time with a man that date-raped me because he said he’d tell her if I didn’t allow him to rape me again.
While I get that victims can be closeted about their trauma, our FMC was clearly more upset that it wasn’t Fox than that it happened at all. So her allowing her friend to be put in such a vulnerable position by not telling her Ian drugged her is unforgivable.
Also her “defiance” against the bullies extended only to whining.
I just don't think Bully Romance is for me. While I loved the guys, the trust I had for them was just not there and I couldn't get passed how they used an almost rape to get Roselie to do what they wanted. Plus the reason Fox wasn't talking to Rosie was weak.
I wish it worked and I really wanted to love it but I just think Bully Romance isn't my thing.
Why did I wait so long to start this series?! I'm so addicted with this story. I'm rooting for Rosie of course. Seems like she's finally going to stand up for herself. Even though the end broke my heart, I'm desperate to start the next book. Here I go! 😬
This book starts with the heroine being forced to lick the shoes of some evil high school queen bee wannabe. In front of everyone. Without the gun pointed to her head. Voluntarily.
Is this a fucking joke?
I'm afraid it isn't.
I just wonder who would wanna read about this spineless idiot. Not me, that's for sure.
This book actually took me by surprise with how well it was able to capture my attention. This book is definitely drama filled and filled with bossy alpha assholes who you know when they love, they love with every fibre of their being.
Throw in some queen bee bitch drama who I wouldn’t mind knocking her down a few notches, some other drama and a whole bunch of other stuff and you have yourself a kicker start to a series.
Definitely living the group dynamic and the personalities of everybody. They balance each other out so well that it’s truly a vibe.
What a book! My friend Kayla knows I love bully romance and recommended I read this book! And I am so glad she did, it is fantastic! This book has so many twists, turns, ups and downs. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time reading this book! I had no idea where it was going to go!
Rosalie and Fox where best friends when they were younger, promising to never leave each other’s side! Then tragedy struck, ripping them a part! Fast forward years later and Rosalie is in a situation where she needs rescuing. She never would have thought/seen it coming that the person to rescue her would be Fox, her old best friend! But being rescued comes with a price! A price that not only she has to pay up, but a price that she need to go through with otherwise she will loose everything.
This book was amazing! And that cliffhanger! I so need to know what is going to happen and where the story will go next! I loved K.G. Reuss’ writing! It was captivating and grabbed your attention! I am so excited to read much more of her books!
** I KNOW I reviwed this series when I first read this series. *looks around goodreads suspiciously**
But anyways, man, what a way to start a series!! I read this back when I was first opening myself up to the rh world, and I was completely obsessed with these characters from the get go! Rosie has such a quiet strength to her, and I loved how she knocked every one of those cocky boys for a loop, especially Fox. I hated his reason for hating her, but at the same time I understood how big his grief was, and he was a child when everything happened, so it made sense that he acted like that. But now that he's trying to repent for all his mistakes (slowly but surely. Even if that cliffy had me SCREAMING!) I'm all here for it. Plus I'm absolutely loving all the dynamics to everyone's relationships, and not gonna lie, Cole and Ethan totally have my heart.
If you are in the need for a new bully, enemies to lovers rh pick this up!
This book definitely had me In Ruins! K.G (a new author to me) had sucked me in from reading the blurb alone. And then the story had me sucked in from the get go. Rosalie aka Rosie and Fox had me completely enamoured with their friendship to hatred to their everything they were and are and more. Their story along with Ethan, Cole and Enzo was a crazy rollercoaster ride of so many feelings and emotions hitting me like a freight train. Never wanting it to end and completely entranced by them all. Seriously I could not put this book down, I just kept reading and reading till I got to the end. K.G had me under her spell with this incredibly, amazing, fantastic one hell of a story book! And the way she left it had me hyperventilating and crying for more!
This is a page turner that I could not put down. Drama? Check. Excitement? Check. Hot steamy scenes? Check!! This book had me on a rollercoaster of feelings. I didn't know if I loved the group of guys Rosalie was seeing, or if I hated them, or loved to hate them. Fox is the biggest mystery of them all. Definitely worth the read if you are looking for something dark, hot and twisted!
This is my first book by this author and for the most part, I liked the story, but the start of the book was a little rough and I did not like how Rosalie was treated by Fox and his girlfriend Juliet. It bothered me that Fox kept calling Rosalie a freakshow throughout the book yet she ended up sleeping with him. The end definitely shocked me and makes me want to continue with the series.
I usually dont like Bully RH, but this was okay. Sure, i still hated it, and i only kept at it because I hoped it would get better(which it did). A lot of drama. I like Ethan and Cole the most.
